78 in Lagos?? Like I posted earlier today, the lockdown would be extended on the 27th. Only problem is that an extension would not achieve the desired goal.

Like the lockdown, the policies around nose mask would never work. The reason is very obvious we are too stubborn in this country.

The same people that flouted the order will never align themselves with any policy on nose masks. If we expect the average agbero or bus conductor in Lagos to wear a nose mask while hustling for passengers with their ever loud rhetorics, then we need to rethink our local policies.

I mean, these guys are the kings of the roads in Lagos so whatever gets them back on the road would astronomically increase the rate of infection by 2000 percent.

Lagosians have to either live with this virus and count daily losses in terms of human lives (of course, the poor will suffer greater casualty) or continue to F00L ourselves with 500 tests daily.

Ondo Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has refused suggestions from political allies that he should commence impeachment processes against his deputy, Hon Agboola Ajayi. The Nation has learnt.

Relationship between Akeredolu and the deputy has broken down over what an aide to the Governor described “as broken down of excessive trust.”

It was gathered some politicians approached the Governor to either ask Agboola to resign or face impeachment but the Governor declined and asked the man be left alone.

The deputy has not been seen recently in many public functuons.

Sources close to the office of the Deputy Governor however said the Governor would fail in any impeachment plot because the deputy picked majority of the House of Assembly members.

Some political allies of the deputy governor said he was more grounded in grassroots politics than the Governor.

They said the deputy has been loyal to Akeredolu but politicians who wanted politcal favours painted lies to the Governor through the First Lady.

An aide to the Deputy Governor, who pleaded anonymity, said the relationship was cordial until Governor Akeredolu started having fears that his deputy would contest against him at the primaries.

But a top government official said the deputy betrayed the trust Akeredolu have in him by attempting to put political structures in place ahead of this year’s governorship election.

The top official said Akeredolu gave free hands for his deputy to nominate political appointees from Ondo South and allowed him to make nominations during the party primaries ahead of 2019 general elections.

According to him: “Akeredolu trusted the deputy to handle politcal matters and that was why he listened to him to support some candidates to contest under the Action Alliance.

“But the deputy went to Abuja and told them the Governor was not listening to advice. That was what led to Akeredolu’s suspension.

“We have told the Governor to begin impeachment processes but he said we shoild allow posterity judge his Deputy.”

Six weeks after a pipeline explosion rocked the Abule-Ado community, the Lagos State Government has presented cheques to families of the 23 deceased victims of the explosion.

Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, who presented the cheques to the families, shared it with the Twitter community on Wednesday afternoon.

“We hope the money will help provide some relief even as they miss their loved ones,” he said in his tweet.

He noted that the state is working assiduously with stakeholders in the safety and power sector to find a solution to issues in the sector, and prevent the repeat of such a catastrophe.

The explosion

Residents of Abule-Ado district in the Amuwo-odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State had awoken to a loud blast on Sunday, March 15, 2020. The blast, which shook buildings to their foundations, was later discovered to have resulted from a gas pipeline explosion.

Nairametrics had reported that many people lost their lives, with several persons injured. Over 50 houses and vehicles worth millions of naira also got destroyed in the explosion.

Subsequently, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had set up an N2 billion relief fund headed by the Deputy Governor to support the survivors.

The governor kicked off the fund by releasing N250 million into it, then some corporate organisations and individuals followed suit.

Malawi’s High Court on Friday temporarily barred the government from implementing a 21-day lockdown to curb coronavirus following a petition by a human rights group.

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition argued that the government had failed to announce any measures to cushion the poor during the lockdown.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa. More than half of its population live below the poverty threshold.

The organisation’s chairman, Gift Trapence, said the court had granted them temporary relief pending a judicial review in seven days.

“Yes, we have been granted the injunction,” he told AFP. “So, what it means is that there is no lockdown for the next seven days.”

The court did not give reasons for its stay order.

On Thursday and Friday, thousands of angry market traders marched in the capital Lilongwe and in the cities of Blantyre and Zomba, to protest against the lockdown.

They have vowed to disregard the shutdown, saying it will devastate workers who live hand-to-mouth.

President Peter Mutharika had announced a three-week lockdown starting on Sunday and saids the measure “may be extended” if needed.

The southeast African country has recorded 17 cases of coronavirus, two of them fatal.

Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has called on Governor Seyi Makinde to warn the chairman of the Park Disciplinary Committee in the state, Mukaila Auxiliary, to stop using his position to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere in the state.

Sunday Igboho, who made the call while reacting to a recent fracas at Soka area in Ibadan last week Friday, also expressed his displeasure at the way Auxiliary and his boys caused mayhem in various areas from Challenge to Beere recently.

He then called on Makinde to put a square peg in a square by appointing people who are versed in the management of parks as the head of the committee because Auxiliary has failed to carry out the assignment given to him.

He also urged Makinde and other stakeholders in the state to advise Auxiliary to refrain from any activity that threatens the peaceful atmosphere in the state and also put a stop to the abuse of the power delegated to him by the state government.

The chairman of the park management system disciplinary committee in Oyo State, Alhaji Mukaila Lamidi, popularly known as Auxiliary, has disclosed that Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, is behind last week’s violence in Ibadan.

OYOINSIGHT.COM had reported how Sunday Igboho advised Governor Seyi Makinde to warn Auxilliary against causing further trouble within the state capital.

Auxiliary, who disclosed this during an interview with BBC Yoruba, also narrated the cause of the fracas that happened at Soka recently.

According to him, a man named Remi Soka was the one who attacked his ‘boys’, who the government appointed to collect levies from motorcyclists at Soka area in Ibadan.

He stressed further that when he visited the place, Remi Soka and his boys also attacked him and even stoned his car. I had to stop the my car and they ran away. He can’t wait for me. But many of our people had been injured. Even, members of the ACOMMORAN in that area have come to report him. He is collecting levy from commercial drivers for Sunday Igboho who is not from Ibadan.

He said, “Sunday Igboho is my boy, despite the that he sent suspected hired killers, who were armed like SARS officials, to attack me along Ibadan-Iwo road during the burial of Alhaji Tawa.

“In fact, he used to shout that there is nothing the government can do because, according him, there is no government. However, Igboho can’t say any of these things in my presence because he knows that he is the one causing violence.

“Igboho supported the APC government together with Fele (the former NURTW chairman) to the extent that they sent me to jail for an offense I know nothing about but I am back and the government I support is in power, yet you are telling me we won’t serve our tenure peacefully.”

He added that from time immemorial, only an NURTW member who worked for a gubernatorial candidate will be appointed as the chairman of NURTW when the candidate emerges.

He cited the example of the late former chairman, Alhaji Taofeek Oyerinde, who was known as Fele, who worked for the immediate past governor of the state, Abiola Ajimobi, and was appointed to chair NURTW in the state.

He also noted that he is not interested in fighting anybody anymore because he now does anything Governor Seyi Makinde wants.

I support the forceful closing down of any worship centre to add the fight against the pandemic. The grouse is that I'm yet to see any call for the same from the usual "host" who would have wasted no time to insult or mock Igbos if it was them that were involved in this.

I have just commissioned in Ikenne and Sagamu respectively, two of the three isolation centres (the third being in Iberekodo, Abeokuta) in Ogun State towards further containing the spread of COVID-19 within the State.

The purpose-built facilities are of 21-bed (Sagamu), 100-bed (Iberekodo) and 128-bed (Ikenne) capacities, respectively.

In Ikenne, I disclosed that the restriction order from the Presidency on internal movements of goods and persons within Ogun State (Lagos and FCT Abuja) will take effect from Friday, 3rd April, 2020.

This is a result of my talks with the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari GCFR to allow our people to make use of the time between now and then to our prepare for the lockdown.

The Oyo State chapter of the Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN) has called on the State Governor, Mr. Seyi Makinde and his Special Assistant on Tourism, Mr. Taiwo Adebisi, popularly known as Taye Currency to subject themselves to Coronavirus (COVID-19) test to ascertain their status.


The party argued that the tests were relevant against the backdrop of reports that Mr. Adebisi allegedly defied the 14-day self-isolation recommended by the Nigeria Centre for Diseases and Control (NCDC) for returnees from countries with widespread cases of the COVID-19 by attending and performing, being a fuji musician at a political rally organized by the PDP in Ibadan the Oyo state capital.

SPN in a statement made available to DAILY POST on Friday by its State Secretary, Mr. Ayodeji Adigun also appealed to Makinde to ensure that facilities for mass testing and treatment be made available in the 33 LGA while hotels and unoccupied houses across the State must be converted to self-isolation centres.


The party also demanded an extension of the two weeks’ holiday for civil servants to workers in private sectors with provision of stipends for other citizens who are not salary earners.

The party said, “Therefore, given the level of interaction that is expected to have taken place between Mr Taye currency and the Governor, being his principal and the fact that the Governor also reportedly hosted Mr David Adeleke, a hip-pop musician, popularly known as Davido who is also allegedly a returnee from the UK and currently in a self-isolation after he performed at a show attended by hundreds of youths in Ibadan, we strongly hope that the Governor will take this suggestion so seriously.

“We condemn the kind of double standard and insincerity demonstrated by the State government towards its order over the effort to curtail the spread of the virus. This has no doubt given a credence to the concern and fear recently expressed by the, Nigeria Union of Journalist, NUJ in a press statement where a doubt was cast over the readiness of the Governor and the government to give all it takes to curtail the growing spread of the virus in the state. This is asides other issues like unpleasant state of the isolation centres, lack of test kit and inadequate medical consumables and staff strength.


“Moreover, we are worried that the health and lives of many youths might have been imperilled by the irresponsible conduct of Davido and Taye Currency, who were supposed to be in a self-isolation, unfortunately with the obvious endorsement of the state governor went ahead to organize shows at different occasions.

“With these developments we strongly believe that what is more important at this stage, in order to curtail the uncontrollable spread of the virus in the state is to ensure that adequate facilities for effective conduct of mass testing are provided and accessible in all the 33 local government across the state. This will enable quick detection, isolation and subsequent treatment of any infected person.

“We also call for upgrade of all the general hospitals across the state with necessary equipment and recruitment of more health workers provided with adequate protective gear and special allowances in order to ensure effective handling of patients of Covid-19 including critical cases. SPN also demand an acquisition of some hotels and unoccupied houses for the use of those with no capacity for self-isolation as well as provision of water in every community to aid hand washing and distribution of hand sanitizer to ordinary masses


“We welcome the stay at home order by the state Government including the two weeks holiday for civil servants in order to curtail the spread of the virus. However, we demand that such a directive must also be extended to private sector without loss of jobs and pay for workers. We also demand a weekly payment of stipends of N10, 000 for every household of other categories of working people who are not salary earners in the state. We strongly believe that all these measures are necessary to ensure a full compliance with the stay at home order”.

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed five new cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria.

Three new cases were confirmed in FCT, and two in Oyo State.

This brings the total number of confirmed cases in Nigeria to 70.

However, three have been discharged with one death.

People will move more to places where they can legitimately hustle than one propped up by the national economy.
If Abuja wants to legitimately compete with Lagos into the far future, it would have to develop an Industrial base, a real organic city structure (not just a city center governmental facade surrounded by shanties and middle class living areas) and then offer residents a diversity of lifestyle choices like Lagos. But I am not sure if that will happen being that it does not tally with Abuja's initial purpose since it is meant to be a planned and serene/orderly city.

Lagos's own problem stems mostly from the general state of transport infrastructure leading to massive bottlenecks such as endless holdups. It should take more to the marine segment while also expanding existing terrestrial road structures including building new ones and increasing linkability between areas by offering more route choices.
It should also try to decentralized governing structure. Let all those LCDA's start operating like independent mini cities. No reason why Lekki should be fundamentally attached to Lagos when it can be its own independent City of Lekki. That is how it usually works in the Western world. Once a suburb gets too big and developed, it becomes an independent incorporated city.

Yes Abuja urban area grew so fast initially, the reason being it was a newly emerging city as a lot of things were being moved away from Lagos and transplanted into Abuja. It happens with every new urban center experiencing a growth spurt. But it will all naturally slow down eventually and grow at a rate just slightly higher than other major urban areas of the country (Bar Lagos and maybe PH and some other new place where something big happens) but nothing as phenomenal as before. In fact it has already slowed. The greatest period of growth of Abuja was between 1995 and 2010. It has slowed somewhat since this er although still growing fast, it will eventually level out.
