Did u even read the article u posted. . They specifically mention 2 Nigerian companys Guaranty trust bank

and Nigerias Notore Fertilizer company. .

although they left out big companies like Dangote group,Globacom and UBA bank
that are expanding fast across Africa

Business is good all over Africa. . my point is Nigerians usually have the money to compete anywhere in the continent
and are no pushovers at home

Yes I read it last month when it first was written, I juts forgot about the Nigerian companies, my bad grin I only remembered about it b/c of the Kenyan retailer, Nakumatt that they had in it.

Nigeri has the money to compete anywhere in Africa, but frankly it seems like sometimes other African nations are taking development more seriously, and if this is true then sooner or later Nigerians won't be the only ones w/ the money to compete anywhere in Africa
.
Politics / Re: Is Nigeria A Developing Nation? by Eddeux(m): 4:49am On Jun 15, 2010
Nigeria is a frontier market. Development not at a pace to call it a emerging market, but it has many many many aspects of it that make it possible that if corruption is put in place someday, and Nigeria gets a serious leader it can be unlocked.
Meddler:

You hit the nail on the head. Nigeria is a paradox. I don't think we can call it a developing nation. We seem to be regressing if nothing more. I mean it's 2010 and we're still dealing with generating electricty c'mon now. I'm not even comparing it with America. I lived in Tanzania for 2 years and Dar-es-Salaam blew me away.
this would be the ultimate embarassment, having other African countries leapfrog the 'giant' of Africa in development. But oh well, at least some countries are taking development seriously.

since forever. . .Have u not noticed that Nigeria is the only black African country whose economy is not controlled by foreigners when it comes to retail trade and the economy in general?

In Other west African countries its the lebanese that own all the shops
In east Africa its the Indians

In south Africa its the whites that control the economy

In Nigeria u cant try that with an igbo, hausa or yoruba merchant. . u will be out-hustled

so year entrepreneurship is a Nigerian

I get your point, but I'm still negliant to say that business seems to have a bright future in East and Southern Africa with the whole East Africa trade zone, and COMESA. There was a good story on african businesses on WSJ, though they seemed to focus on some of the larger companies (which happened to be South Africa and one Kenyan retailer, no Nigerian) http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704912004575252593400609032.html

Paddy_lo already summed it up, Nigeria is twice the size of Cali, but yeah too many states in the country, imo. I think Nigeria has more states than Brazil (a country more than 4 times it size)

okay, if you have a problem with it go take it up with the designer, or send a letter to the Nigerian government offering to redesign!

Foreign Affairs / Re: Ghana Has One Of The Worst Economies In The World. (forbes List) by Eddeux(m): 1:48am On Jun 15, 2010
Nigeria , with its severe challenges , still manages to produce businesses that have done well enough to even move beyond our shores in search of expansion and greater market share!!!! That is human potential !!!! Do you then think that if Nigerian leaders go on to provide stable electricity and relative security for even only 3 years you would still repeat your statement that "Ghana has the potential to develop before Nigeria does" when , even with serious challenges and frustrating leadership , we are still producing some of the largest, most innovative and most succesful private businesses/companies in Africa ?
We must not confuse good governance and democratic achievements to mean economic potential. Those considerations are only part of the complet equation . A driven , enterpreneural and innovative populace is worth almost more than anything else where economic potentials is concerned.
We have to rate and even learn from what Ghana has achieved. Nonetheless we should look at the real facts and statistic so that we can stop the pity party that is now making us ignore relevant economic indices and reality. Good Governance and stable electricity cannot suddenly give you one of the biggest consumer market in the World. We are all seeing India (a previous basket case) and China doing well today because , once the politics was sorted , the large and stimulated/driven population did the rest.
I agree with that last part, but you are forgetting that there are other ways to further develop a nation without vast human resources available. Am I saying that Ghana has the infrastructure to lead a productivity-expanded economy that it's citizens could reap the benefits of? No I'm not. But what I meant by Ghana possibly developing before Nigeria, ironicallly it's all about the oil.
A) Ghana has over 800 million barrels of oil so far discovered, with maybe a billion more. If the Ghanaian government uses this oil money wisely then yes Ghana can reach middle-income status by 2020, before Nigeria.
B) Obviously Ghana doesn't have the human resources to transform into a china-like growth, but there is a such thing as productivity. A highly-skilled workforce can produce more, and with the revenue from oil the Ghanian government should ensure that it uses it to reform the country's education system. Once this happens and Ghana is churning out better educatd workers then yes there is the possibility of it developing at an equal pace, or at least being higher ranked on the HDI, than Nigeria.
Culture / Re: African Ladies Abroad Carrying Babies On Their Back!(Dirty Clothes) by Eddeux(m): 12:27am On Jun 14, 2010
SSaemoenl:

Culture is what we create for ourself in the sense that the little way we can perceptive within the local environment we reside, but one might think living across the local environment and see changes in that same perception we believe in, We should try as much as possible to change and adapt to the new culture.

Many African young ladies in abroad always like to carry their babies on their back and even carry items on their head whenever they are working the streets of western countries, which i founds so primitive when compared to the white race.

Please have your say on the way out of this ugly practiced culture we tend to bring in abroad, as some will use dirty wrappers on that and make the act so primitives as the whites called it MONKEY way of life.

Your suggestion and called to improve our culture to 21st century world.
good lord that baby's head looks like its about to pop off and roll out. shocked They could have at least used the proper things for carrying babies on your back, I forgot what they were called but many people here in America use them, and just about everywhere else.

Politics / Re: All Nigerians Are Scammers - Yes by Eddeux(m): 7:01pm On Jun 13, 2010
Isn't it amazing how hypocrisy seems to be a worldwide habit? I am shocked at how some people can turn around and defend their country saying "No not all of us are fat, lazy, and arrogant" then go back and label a whole group of people as scammers. It happens every day in our world and unfortunately doesn't seem like it will stop at any time. What amazes me more though is how some have the audacity to put the blame on Nigerians for what scammers have done to them. I mean if you're dumb enough to fall for a scam then there is no one other than yourself to blame.

I usually go on Yahoo answers, and yeah it's a place where you can't logically argue with someone since a lot of people don't know what they're talking about.

Gbawe:

Even as I agree with some of what you wrote , the part in bold is , frankly, impossible. No Country in West Africa has the innate potential to become the "economic powerhouse of West Africa" ahead of Nigeria. It is simply not possible because of the huge disparity in human and natural resources between Nigeria and other West African nations. Our population, labour Market (skilled and unskilled) , natural endowment and vast goods/services consumer market (that saw Nigeria become one of the fastest growing telecom market in the world) are serious economic considerations no West African nation has or can gain anytime soon !!!!

Do you know that many respected non-African (and therefore non-partisan) economic analyst have posited that the Nigerian economy may become the biggest in Africa (toppling South Africa) as early as 2011-2012?

there are too many other indices that show , even with abject mismanagement of its resources, just how economically far ahead Nigeria is in comparison with other West African nations . Suffice to say that if Nigeria , assisted by good leadership, operates optimally for the next 10 years it can become something few nations in Africa (and non in West Africa) can become - one of the top 20 economies of the World in the near future.
Ghana has the potential to develop before Nigeria does. Actually there was a report on this on how if Ghana uses its oil reserves wisly it can funnel the profits made from this back into infrastructure and development of the standard of living for its people. Though  what you said about no other West African country having the potential of Nigeria is true, it doesn't mean that they possibly won't develop or attract more attention than Nigeria until Nigeria can get its act together.  If you ask me Nigeria is far more unstable than Ghana, and if the worst was to happen in Nigeria (say a split up) then Ghana would definitely be regarded as the nation that could help develop West Africa along with rapid development within its borders.

Nigeria may be in the G20 by 2020 but unless reforms start soon I don't see it happening. Sorry but yes Nigeria has the potential and is receiving the most investor attention in West Africa but the leaders don't seem to be phased with development.

sjeezy8:

lol no big deal its number two now and people are still suffering lmfao

People are going to suffer no matter what. People still suffer in developing countries. The thing about development is that it takes time for majority of benefits to trickle down to majority of the population. Yes China was Asia's #2 economy years back and it still has hundreds of milions still in poverty, and now although it's the largest there are still millions in poverty but it has gotten better. You don't see the bright side about Nigeria becoming Africa's largest economy.

Politics / Re: 'Nigeria ‘ll Be Africa’s Biggest Economy By 2023' by Eddeux(m): 8:11pm On Jun 09, 2010
Nigeria's GDP (PPP) is at $357.2 billion dollars, and $167.4 billion (nominal). South Africa's GDP is $495.1 billion (PPP) and $280.6 billion (nominal), and they're saying it's going to take Nigeria another 13 years to catch up?!

The differences between GDP really isn't that huge, and assuming Nigeria grows at a 7% rate then $357.2x1.07^10 = $702 billion dollars by 2020, and if SA grows at 4% then $495.1 x 1.04^10 = $732.86 billion, which would mean Nigeria Purchasing Power Parity wise would be straight on SA's tail. Note this is just my easy way to calculate GDP growth, and I'm positive Nigeria will see growth above 7% before at least 2014 (4 years away just in case it takes that long to get reforms started). This would give Nigeria 6 years of growth higher than 7%, possible in the double digits, to catch SA, and it will happen. Nigeria has the potential to get GDP above $900 billion, possible over $1 trillion, by 2020 if reforms are made soon. Nevertheless I expect it to overtake SA sometime between 2015-2018 if growth is higher than 7%.

I bet hope that gas prices will be between $6-$10 dollars a gallon by 2020. We need more people driving hybrids/electric cars (when they are launched of course).
