When you read about Zimbabwe on the news, you’d think the President, Robert Mugabe who recently announced he will run in the country’s presidential election in 2018 at age 94 and his wife who has declared herself President after her husband, are the only ones who are delusional or close to it. But the legislators in the country now have us wondering what could have gone wrong with Zimbabwe’s political system and the people in it. So the Zimbabwean football team The Warriors made an unimpressive outing at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Gabon. Although they held Algeria to a draw in their first game, they lost in the two matches with Senegal and Tunisia and were booted out of the competition. Upon their return to Zimbabwe, members of the country’s Parliament have asked for a refund of the money that was paid to the team as allowances for the game. Buhera South legislator, Joseph Chinotimba said: “You had given them money that covered the whole month and they are back, can they refund the money that was not spent?” And that’s not even the craziest! Harare East legislator, Terrence Mkupe took the anger a step further and said, “Is it not possible for the players to be detained in an army barrack considering that they got $85,000 for participating at AFCON and (the players) must pay back by performing a service in the barracks?” He questioned the Sports Minister on the existence of a government policy that would allow for punishment for the team in the event of a failure, but fortunately, such policy does not exist, according to the minister. When we thought we had seen the worse with our own Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung, these lawmakers gave a whole new perspective to madness in high places. It is not known whether any action has been taken against the team but we can tell they will be punished for their failure. http://www.newshelm.com/2017/01/zimbabwean-legislators-want-refund-from.html cc lalasticlala

English-speaking regions of Cameroon have now been without the internet for more than a week following recent protests in the country. This shutdown comes after the government outlawed at least two Anglophone groups - Southern Cameroons National Council and the Cameroon Anglophone Civil Society Consortium took to the streets to protest over the marginalization by the French-speaking led government. Wednesday, January 25, 2017, marks the eighth day since the authorities ordered the country’s telecommunications providers to shut off internet connections to the regions of Northwest and Southwest. However, Cameroonians have also been receiving texts from authorities warning them not to post 'information they can’t prove' on social media. http://www.newshelm.com/2017/01/cameroon-president-shuts-down-internet.html cc lalasticlala

Sometime this week, president Buhari's Senior Special Adviser on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, was a guest on Channels TV where he fielded questions on the security situation in southern Kaduna. He said that contrary to misrepresentation by the mainstream media, the conflict is not political or religious but a communal conflict with Christians and Muslims attacking each other. This introduces a new angle to the narrative. It will be recalled that the Northern Governors Forum recently said herdsmen from other countries are responsible for the attacks. While maintaining that the conflict is more communal than religious or political, he said the region is the only one in the entire north west with a PDP senator and this could be a factor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPXMkXoZVQk http://www.newshelm.com/2017/01/kaduna-crisis-its-result-of-christians.html cc lalasticlala |

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called for the arrest and prosecution of people who preach and promote hate speeches in the Nigeria. According to him, hate preaching is one major factor responsible for friction between Christians and Muslims in the country. "Preachers of hate must be reported to the security agencies," he said. He also called on religious leaders and their followers to support the security agencies to deal with people who promote religious intolerance in the country. “We must tell ourselves the truth, we must collaborate with authorities to deal with those who don’t want peace. “ When you keep quiet, it means you are supporting what other individuals are doing and the masses will suffer. He spoke at the opening of a two-day conference organised by International Dialogue Centre, KAICIID, an inter-governmental organisation that promotes dialogue to build peace in conflict areas on Wednesday. http://www.newshelm.com/2017/01/every-christian-muslim-hate-preacher.html cc lalasticlala |
