The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday said it had seized 159 million tablets of Tramadol at Apapa Port in Lagos.

Director, Technical Services of the agency, Mr Femi Oloruntoba, made this known at a public hearing organised by the Senate Joint Committee on Drugs and Narcotics and Health in Abuja.

Tramadol is a narcotic-like pain reliever used to treat or moderate severe pain.


The public hearing was based on a motion entitled “The Need to Check the Rising Menace of Pharmaceutical Drugs Abuse among Youths in Nigeria”.

Oloruntoba revealed that 50 tonnes of Tramadol was recently destroyed in Kano alone.


He said there were laws guiding the use of controlled drugs like Tramadol and Cocaine and what was needed was enforcement of the laws.

“In 2016, about 31 different substances were abused in Nigeria,” he said.

The director noted that drug was on in the exclusive legislative list and should not be taken to the concurrent, adding that if that was done otherwise, there would be a huge anarchy.

He lamented that only the Federal High Court had jurisdiction to try drug cases, describing it as “a challenge”.

He said that because the cases could not be prosecuted in magistrate court, most of the time the Federal High Court was choked and a lot of cases not moving,” he said.

Oloruntoba, therefore, called on the Federal Government to increase the number of judges in the federal high court to try cases of drug abuse.

In his submission, President, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Ahmed Yakasai, called for the drafting of a prescription policy to curb drug abuse menace.

“We are trying to see where we have prescription policy. If we have this prescription policy, we will know who is doing what,” he said.

Yakasai, who said that Nigeria’s borders were porous, decried existing situation which forbids National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), was not allowed access into the ports.

On his part, Director-General of the agency, Prof. Christiana Adeyeye, said the agency lacked adequate manpower for frequent visitation to pharmaceutical companies.

Represented by Dr Umar Musa, Director, Narcotics and Controlled Substances, Adeyeye said drug problem was a genuine crisis that required collective efforts to tackle.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Senate Committee, Sen. Joshua Lidani, said the use of illicit drugs, trafficking and other pharmaceutical drugs abuse, particularly among women and youth, was worrisome and was increasing by the day.

“This calls for concern and urgent action to stem the tide.

“It behooves stakeholders to strengthen and redouble our efforts to tame it, and where possible, strengthen the capacity of agencies charged with the responsibility of enforcing relevant laws to enable them discharge their responsibilities effectively.” (NAN)

South African kid suffers Myiasis infection after wearing a cloth without ironing it

A man identified by his username @EricanM, has taken to social media to share a rather horrible experienced of a child who suffered from Myiasis infection. According to his post, the clothes were aired to dry under the sun and later worn on the child. Unbeknownst to them, an insect had laid eggs on the clothes and due to the fact that the clothes weren't ironed, the eggs soon latched onto the body of the child.

Sharing photos of the end result of the infection, he wrote:

"These worms are from clothing that was aired to dry on the line & not ironed thereafter. Apparently some insect lays such eggs on the clothing then when zu do not iron the eggs hatch on U & become those worms. Lets iron those clothes, even the briefs & ."

Myiasis is the parasitic infestation of the body of a live mammal by fly larvae (maggots) that grow inside the host while feeding on its tissue.

Although flies are most commonly attracted to open wounds and urine- or feces-soaked fur, some species can create an infestation even on unbroken skin and have been known to use moist soil and non-myiatic flies (such as the common housefly) as vector agents for their parasitic larvae.

It was gathered that the deceased who was identified as Ibeh Kelechi Assumpta a.k.a Kaycee was shot on her birthday. The 23-year old student was also suppose to graduate by August this Year.

According to her brother she was shot directly at, but some other source allegedly said it was a stray bullet, he further explained that some village cult members were celebrating in preparation of their black night, and in the process gunshots were released indiscriminately, but it was unfortunate that the deceased was within the vicinity at that point.


Her parent and loved ones are still in grief over the incident. May her soul rest in peace.

The Association of Christian Schools in Nigeria has said it will direct its members to boycott the West African Examination Council (WAEC) if the body does not reverse its decision banning all private school teachers from invigilating its examinations.

The examination body had issued a directive banning private school teachers from supervising its examinations over allegations that they aid students to commit malpractices.

But the association said the ban is aimed at Christian schools in Nigeria.

Mrs. Ekaete Ettang, the president of the association, while addressing journalists at a press briefing in Plateau state, said WAEC must reverse its decision and “planned implementation”.

She said: “In view of the above, the association of Christian schools demand that WAEC cancels the order and revert to status quo where credible teachers from Christian schools in Nigeria were involved in the supervision of WAEC examination. Failure to do so, all Christian schools nationwide will withdraw from future WAEC examinations.”

“If WAEC does not reverse this decision and planned implementation, all Christian schools will boycott future WAEC examination.

“WAEC and ministries of education must provide statistics to show the trend in the examination malpractices across the schools, which forms the basis of their decision.”

Mrs. Ettang also demanded to know the law which banned its members from participating in the supervision of WAEC, examinations, pointing out that the move by the examination body was an indictment on the association.

“The Christian schools demand that the laws and legislations that prohibit teachers from Christian schools from supervising WAEC examinations be made available, as they have been participating in this process over the years based on written communication that are on record.”

Few weeks ago, the President of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Ishaq Akintola, also warned the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to fix its examination timetable to accommodate the Friday jummat prayer or risk disruption of the examinations by Muslims.

A Nigerian fashion designer recently showed why trusting a tailor could break your heart. A social media user named, Ms Jmk, shared a hilarious photo of what her friend ordered from the tailor and what she got instead.

Apparently, her good friend paid N10,000 to the tailor who had promised to recreate a crop top and high slitted palazo look.

Justice S.S Ogunsanya of the Lagos High Court today sentenced Paul Onwughalu, a former Head of Operations, Union Bank Plc, Head Office, Marina, Lagos to three years imprisonment.

Onwughalu was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC , Lagos Zonal office on February 24 on a four-count charge bordering on failure to conduct due diligence in financial transactions.

One of the counts reads: “ That you, Paul Onwughalu, on or about the 9th of January, 2013, at Lagos within the Ikeja Judicial Division, whilst being an employee of Union Bank Plc, failed to exercise due diligence in relation to the conduct of financial transactions with one DanKawu Bureau De Change by confirming and authorizing payment of the sum of N450,000,000 (Four Hundred and Fifty Million Naira) fraudulently transferred by hacking into Union Bank database (flexcube) and transferring the said sum to Union Bank Plc account of one DanKawu Bureau De Change domiciled in Union Bank, Head Office Branch, Marina, Lagos and thereby facilitated the crediting and withdrawal of the said sum by one DanKawu Bureau De Change to various accounts in Ecobank, Diamond Bank, Zenith Bank, United Bank for Africa and Dankawu Bureau De Change. ”

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him, thereby setting the stage for his full trial.

In the course of the trial, the prosecution counsel, Fadeke Giwa, presented a number of witnesses and tendered various documents that were admitted in evidence by the court.

Counsel to the convict, O. Fagbemi, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing his client.

Delivering her judgement, Justice Ogunsanya found the accused guilty and sentenced him to three years imprisonment on each count.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Examination Board (JAMB) has reacted to reported release of 2018 UTME results.

Reports had on Tuesday emerged on social media that the UTME 2018 results have been released, with some candidates posting their alleged results online.

However, the board spokesman, Dr Fabian Benjamin, told DAILY POST that candidates should disregard the UTME results making the rounds.

He said the results were fake, advising candidates to wait patiently for the original results to be released.

Recall that the Registrar of the board, Ishaq Oloyede, had given reasons for the delayed result.

Oloyede had said, “We want to monitor everything that happens through our CCT cameras. Last year, we proved a point that there is nothing extraordinary in the immediate release of results but we had to cancel some results when we found out what happened in some centres.

Fabian, therefore, maintained that although the UTME results are ready, they will not be released immediately to enable officials view the CCT cameras to check for exam malpractice.

He said, ”We have not released UTME results yet. The results you find online are fake. They are not real.

”We want to view all CCT cameras in all the centres to see if there are cases of malpractices before releasing the results.

”The reason is this: we don’t want to release and later withhold it. If we release before viewing the CCT cameras, we may have to withhold them again. So, we want to release the results once and for all.”

A Nigerian identified as Lamido Ogbeh, has been arrested on Sunday, by Kohsar police for allegedly defrauding a Pakistani man of Rs35 million (almost N194million), in Islamabad.

Pakistantoday, reports that Ogbeh was arrested after the victim lodged a complaint against him on Saturday. The victim in his statement revealed how he was scammed by Ogbeh saying a UK number called him and offered to help him.

The suspect then told the victim to deposit the amount in a bank account to enable his goods from the UK be cleared and delivered in no time. The victim whose name was given as Muhammad Arif said he deposited the money in the given bank account.

The money was later withdrawn by a man named Asif from a bank in Islamabad’s F-7 area. When he received no shipment, Arif contacted the account holder, Asif, who told him he only withdrew the money and gave to a foreigner named Joseph.

Ogbeh was tracked down by the police and was discovered to be a Nigerian living in Pakistan on a business visa.

Ogbeh was also accused of using other bank accounts by the victim and the police believes he has defrauded other people.

Bukola Saraki, the president of the Nigerian Senate, on Sunday, March 11, 2018, accepted the apology of Nigerian singer/songwriter, Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa aka “Charlyboy”, who erroneously stated that an image of the Senate President’s 2012 visit to Ogoniland, was a picture of the Senate President after being chased by youths in Kwara.

After a series of Twitter users, including Saraki’s Head of New Media, Olu Onemola, called Charlyboy’s attention to the fact that the picture he posted was taken during then-Senator Saraki’s oversight visit to Ogoniland, as the Chairman of the 7th Senate’s Committee on Environment and Ecology, Charlyboy, who uses the @AreaFada1 handle on twitter, later apologized to the politician, stating that he was in a hurry to post before verifying the veracity of the story.

Saraki, through his Twitter handle @BukolaSaraki, tweeted back at Charlyboy, stating that he accepts his apology. He said:

“Dear Charlyboy (@Areafada1), I appreciate your coming forward to admit that your post against me was ill-conceived. It takes a lot to do that.

“I agree that we all see things from our respective lenses, but without disregard to what is permissible by an average mind. It is therefore imperative that we observe circumspection at all times so we don’t have to say the avoidable ‘sorry.’”

No fewer than 50 Nigerian migrants were among the hundreds of migrants rescued today in the Mediterranean by Libya’s coastguard and an international charity, Doctors Without Borders(MSF).

The Nigerians were aboard a boat with 110 migrants. They were rescued by Aquarius, a ship being operated by MSF, 21 miles from the coast west of Tripoli. The ship will deliver the migrants, who included 18 women and one child, to Italy.

According to Reuters, more than half the migrants on that boat were Nigerians, with the rest from other sub-Saharan African countries as well as two Palestinians.

The Libyan coastguard vessels also intercepted two of the migrant boats, the first an inflatable dinghy that had broken down with 125 people on board off Zawiya, just west of the capital, Tripoli, said Ayoub Qassem, a coastguard spokesman.

The second boat was turned back off Garabulli, east of Tripoli, and had 112 people on board.

The migrants and their smugglers were trying to take advantage of calm seas as they launched a flurry of boats towards Italy.

Meanwhile the coastguard in Zuwara, a former Libyan smuggling hub west of Zawiya, said they had foiled a departure during the night and arrested some migrants whilst others had escaped with smugglers.
