Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a warning of an impending indefinite strike if the federal government refuses to honour the agreement which led the body to suspend their industrial action last year.

ASUU Chairperson of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Dr. Ibrahim Inuwa, made this known while speaking with some journalists at the Union’s Secretariat at the weekend.

He said that the protracted strike which they embarked on to press home their demands for the continuous survival of public university system in Nigeria was suspended in December after ASUU and the federal government signed a Memorandum of Understanding on various issues, providing timelines for the implementation of each of the eight items on the list.

He however lamented that after seven months since the MoU was signed, the federal government has only addressed two out of the eight issues.

“The University Campuses are becoming restive across the length and breadth, as Academics are threatening to shut down activities once again. This is coming as a result of the failure of the FGN to implement many aspects of memorandum of Action (MoA) it willingly signed with ASUU that ended the last strike in December, 2020.

“Given the glaring and deliberate failure of government to honour the agreement it willingly signed with the Union, it is becoming obvious that industrial harmony is gradually being destroyed in the university campuses.

I don't understand what is going on again. The only people I know that received the so called minimum wage arrears are those that bank with access bank. Now people are saying that all those that receipt the money this morning,will not receive their full salary because the money will be deducted from their salary.

I bank with access bank (Former Diamond). I didn't receive anything. Is it for non-teaching only?

It seems the allowance is not for every non teaching staff. From what's there on the memo, it's only for those who are exposed to work hazards except for the Registrar and Bursar.

SSANU, NASU and ASUP. The reason we were not captured (i stand to be corrected) in the minimum wage arrears was because as at the time of payment to other ministries, agenciesandparastatal, Federer Institutions were yet to enroll into IPPIS.

Bros, this is totally unnecessary. You can still make your point without the insult. Let me ask you. If the FG refuse to pay, what will you do? Except for ASUU, other unions have made several efforts to ensure that the arrears were paid yet no way. With the current economic situation, if you are able to receive your salary that's a tangible reason to still be grateful (not to FG, but to God). That doesn't mean we don't need the minimum wage arrears.

Was it not the same man that impregnated a student in Michael Okpara? When the secret became open, he quickly rushed and paid her bride price. SMH! As for the position, I think he deserves it.

Even though it is our right, I advise you shouldn't put all your hope on the minimum wage arrears. For your sanity sake, pretend like it doesn't exist.

A young man identified simply as Cubic has been shot dead by some group of people suspected to be cultists in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

Details on the incident are still sketchy, however, it was gathered that the man was killed on Saturday night, May 1, 2021.

Meanwhile, friends and colleagues have taken to Facebook to mourn the deceased, with many calling for a solution to the incessant cult killings in the state capital.

Chukwunenye Nweke: The current killings in Awka were instigated by the youths and not by Ndi Ozo or Ezeuzu thus, youths should be obliged in ending the crisis. If the bad elements among the youths could pollute the mindset of others into killing of other youths , those youths in Awka who think they are refined and have good consent for Awka society should also be obliged to sensitize every youth on the need to shun crime and criminality.
