Why is it that in all these years of BBNaija and BBAfrica, we have not come across housemates who orbit whatever they’re cooking to ensure nobody poisons it? This is a normal habit in Africa. Many here do it and will defend the behaviour. Does Big Brother filter housemates to eliminate the perception?

I hate the limited mindset that drinking is enjoyment. What I hate most is that the mindset has flowed down through generations. One would think Gen Z would be more exposed to realize enjoyment can mean traveling to a destination or locking oneself in a hotel for a few days. They don’t.

Mention the word “enjoyment” in a group of Nigerians and you may be surprised by how quickly the imagination travels.

Someone is already thinking about a nightclub. Another person is picturing bottles on a table. Somebody else is thinking about shisha, cigarettes, loud music and a party that will probably continue until morning. And, depending on the crowd, the conversation may eventually drift toward drugs, hookups and sex parties.

But why?

Why has “enjoyment” become so strongly associated with alcohol, smoking, drugs, sexual activity and extravagant nightlife for many people?

Of course, Nigerians do not all think this way. Millions of people enjoy life without drinking, smoking, using drugs or engaging in casual sex. But there is undeniably a cultural association between “having a good time” and certain forms of adult nightlife, particularly among young people.

Part of the explanation lies in how we have been taught to understand success.

For years, Nigerian society has placed enormous emphasis on hustle, achievement and survival. From a young age, many people hear about getting a good education, finding a job, making money, building a house, buying a car, supporting the family and becoming successful. Life can feel like one long assignment.

So when somebody finally says, “I want to enjoy myself,” what exactly does that mean?

For some people, it means temporarily escaping the pressure.

The nightclub becomes a place where nobody is asking about your salary. The alcohol becomes part of the ritual of forgetting tomorrow's problems for a few hours. The loud music drowns out thoughts about bills, unemployment, relationships, family expectations and everything else waiting outside.

In that sense, what we call “enjoyment” can sometimes actually be escape.

There is also the influence of entertainment and social media.

Nigerian music videos, movies, Instagram stories, TikTok videos and celebrity culture frequently present a particular image of the good life: expensive cars, beautiful women, designer clothes, champagne, parties, clubs and extravagant vacations.

The message does not always have to be explicit. Repetition is enough.

If people constantly see wealth and happiness represented through partying, luxury and sexual freedom, they can gradually begin to associate those things with what it means to have “made it.”

A young person who spends Monday to Friday struggling through work may therefore look forward to the weekend as a completely different universe.

Monday is for survival.

Friday is for enjoyment.

And unfortunately, the definition of enjoyment can become increasingly extreme.

There is another interesting factor: peer pressure disguised as culture.

Imagine someone goes out with friends and says they do not drink. Somebody immediately asks, “So what are you drinking?”

They say they don't smoke.

“Why? Just try it.”

They don't want to go to a particular party.

“Guy, you too dey form.”

Eventually, refusing certain activities can make someone feel as though they are missing out on life.

This is particularly powerful among young people because belonging matters. Nobody wants to be the person who is constantly perceived as boring, too serious or “not living life.”

And social media makes this worse.

People rarely post the boring parts of their lives. Nobody is uploading a video of themselves sitting quietly at home on a Tuesday night thinking about their future. They post the party, the bottle, the club, the trip, the beautiful people and the expensive table.

You therefore begin comparing your ordinary life with somebody else's carefully selected highlights.

Suddenly, you feel like everybody is enjoying themselves except you.

But there is a major problem with this definition of enjoyment.

Pleasure is not necessarily the same thing as wellbeing.

There is nothing inherently wrong with going to a party, dancing, having a drink if you are of legal drinking age, meeting friends or enjoying nightlife responsibly. Human beings need recreation. We need laughter, friendship, celebration and moments when we can put our responsibilities aside.

The problem begins when substances, sex or extreme partying become the only language through which enjoyment is understood.

When someone cannot imagine having a great weekend without getting drunk, smoking something, taking a drug or pursuing sexual encounters, it may be worth asking whether they are actually enjoying life—or whether they have simply become dependent on stimulation.

Because enjoyment can look completely different.

It can be travelling somewhere you've never been.

It can be eating good food with people you genuinely love.

It can be watching football with your friends.

It can be going to the beach.

It can be learning something you've always wanted to learn.

It can be exercising, playing games, making music, attending concerts, exploring a new city, reading, creating something, having deep conversations or simply sleeping peacefully after a stressful week.

You can even enjoy your life without announcing it to the internet.

Perhaps one of the biggest problems is that we have confused expensive enjoyment with meaningful enjoyment.

A person can spend ₦500,000 at a nightclub and still go home feeling empty.

Another person can spend ₦5,000 eating suya with three close friends and laugh until their stomach hurts.

Which one enjoyed life more?

There is no universal answer.

The price tag certainly doesn't decide it.

And neither does the presence of alcohol, cigarettes or sex.

Maybe Nigerians need to broaden the meaning of the word “enjoyment.”

Enjoyment should not always mean escaping reality. Sometimes, it should mean building a reality you actually enjoy living in.

There is something beautiful about reaching a point where your happiness isn't dependent on getting intoxicated, impressing strangers or proving to social media that you're having a good time.

You can work hard and still rest.

You can be ambitious and still have fun.

You can be successful without turning every celebration into a drinking competition.

You can attend parties without feeling pressured to take drugs.

You can have relationships and sexual experiences responsibly without making them the foundation of your identity.

And perhaps most importantly, you can enjoy your life without destroying the very life you are trying to enjoy.

So the next time somebody says, “Bro, we need to enjoy,” maybe the first question shouldn't be, “Which club?”

Maybe it should be:

"What actually makes you happy?"

The answer might surprise you.

Some of these men come to see the light and refuse to kill innocents. They leave and another person more hardened replaces them. The US industrial military complex keeps grinding using tax payer money.

Health challenges. It is always a warning sign. Dolly Parton comes to mind. He is only three years younger. Madonna is 68 right now. Hers will start soon.

So long ago, I don’t care. A whole India Love was born at the time. Today, she’s considered a granny at 30.

Why didn’t she make it clear when gossiping that it was his perfume and not his personal hygiene? Women are ruthless when they create false impressions about people. The worst part is they never address the matter to give clarity. Men normally retrace their words to avoid confusion. Women continue with life without a care for the damage done. People have already taken it that the man has body odour despite his team claiming otherwise. I was one of those.

Another long week of nothing. Dead season. It reminds me of how, during Level Up, Adekunle would make threats that he would tumble the house if he got saved from eviction. He would ultimately be saved only to return to one corner of the house to continue gossiping about everyone.

I am still confused on whether Blue made up the body odour claim because Ricky rejected Neche or if it was true. The way Neche added fuel to her words didn’t seem genuine. Blue told one of the dark skin girls (Oyin, Goddessa or Abi) and that one agreed. Since then, nothing. Funny. After Neche left, the Blue herself who started the rumour has stayed mute. If it was true, she would’ve told Chimsom. Is she afraid that Chimsom would confront Ricky? That Chimsom boy sef too like argument.

This silly talk is beginning to gather steam on Twitter.

Keivo should never have mentioned that he's a virgin. Oddly enough,his refusal to kiss, rock, cuddle or run duvet tins with Temi is somehow making the female housemates to look at him even more like a weirdo. Abi especially voiced her irritation with guys like Keivo forming good boy and hailed Temi for quickly getting someone else, her only problem being that it was Tram.

What have Blue and Keivo done to deserve the win? Giving Keivo the money is no different from how someone won NLG by sleeping and eating throughout the competition. No wonder Nigerians picked Aikou as their gambit. At least Flora entertains with information.

She said Neche & Gerard rocked each other in the shower room, but it wasn't hidden, other housemates saw when Neche entered the bathroom. Neche & Blue clearly said they wanted to check out naked guys bathing after the Thursday night pool party. I think Neche rocked him so much he got a little bit aroused,as a result of which the girls returned and opened the door again as Gerard was bathing, exposing him naked to the camera. That was wrong .
