Crime / Senator Elisha Abbo Arrives FCT Police Command For Interrogation by Eeyaniyi(m): 5:24pm On Jul 04, 2019
Embattled Senator Elisha Abbo, who allegedly assaulted a nursing mother at an adult toy shop in Abuja, has arrived at the Federal Capital Territory Police Command for interrogation.

The Peoples Democratic Party lawmaker representing Adamawa North Senatorial District is currently being interrogated by detectives.

The FCT Police Commissioner, Bala Ciroma, confirmed to The PUNCH that Abbo was presently interacting with operatives at the command.

“He is still with us,” Ciroma explained.

Punch correspondent learnt that the senator earlier met with the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, at the Force headquarters before heading to the command for questioning.

Following the outrage over a trending video of the young lawmaker assaulting his victim, the IG had directed the CP to carry out an investigation into the incident.

The IG also asked Ciroma to undertake a forensic investigation of the footage which showed Abbo repeatedly slapping his victim over what appeared to be a minor disagreement while a police officer looked on.

Dear Nairalanders.

The social media is awashed recently with news, pictures and videos of activities of Fulani Heardsmen in the South West Nigeria.

Inasmuch as I'm not doubting the authenticity of these news to certain extent, however, a question needs to be asked on the existence of these activities vis a vis the extent to which it is being painted.

I'm here to learn from Nairalanders with authentic information.

Thank you.

Crime / OPC Warns Epe Monarch Against Further Attacks On Members by Eeyaniyi(m): 9:16am On Apr 21, 2019
A faction of the Oodua People’s Congress has asked the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs to warn the Elepe of Epe, Oba Kamorudeen Animasaun, to desist from allegedly supporting hoodlums and members of the Gani Adams-led OPC to attack innocent cadets.

The President of the aggrieved OPC faction, Rasak Arogundade, gave the warning in his petition to the Lagos Council of Obas and Chiefs, a copy of which was made available to SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday.

Arogundade accused the monarch of bias and threatened that his group would fight back if the attackers, allegedly backed by the monarch, did not stop their attacks, saying this could throw Epeland into avoidable anarchy.

The petition stated in part, “It is for this reason that we seek your urgent intervention to advise one of your erring members, Oba Kamorudeen Animasaun, to desist before he completely desecrates the royal stool he sits on and throws Epeland into a state of anarchy by his actions.

“This Oba is siding with Gani Adams’ faction of the OPC and with his backing, attacks are incessantly carried out against our members.”

He said despite attempts to make peace with Oba Animasaun, the monarch remained unyielding.

He claimed that the matter was reported to the police but they pleaded with him and his members to continue to be peaceful.

Arogundade further alleged that the monarch had mobilised soldiers who had started arresting notable members of the group in the town on trumped-up charges.

“Without sounding impudent, I want to remind you of the saying of our fathers that if a goat is boxed into a corner, it will turn back and face its pursuers. If we are left with no other option, we will use all means to protect our lives and property,” the group added.

Crime / Remembering Lawrence Anini by Eeyaniyi(m): 10:39am On Apr 01, 2019
Exactly 32 years ago today, the notorious bandit who terrorised Benin City and old Bendel State the 80s , Lawrence Nomanyagbon Anini A.K.A. "Ovbigbo" or "the Law" and some members of his gang were executed by firing squad after being convicted by the defunct Bendel Armed Robbery and Firearms Tribunal presided over by Justice James Omo-Agege

Anini was born in a village about 20 miles from Benin City in present-day Edo State. He migrated to Benin at an early age, learned to drive and became a skilled taxi driver. Anini became known in Benin motor parks as a man who could control the varied competing interests among motor park touts and operators. He later dived into the criminal business in the city and soon became a driver and transporter for gangs, criminal godfathers and thieves. Later on, he decided to create his own gang which included, Monday Osunbor, Friday Ofege, Smallie ,Henry Ekponwan, Eweka and Alhaji Zed Zed or Zegezege who was never captured. They started out as car hijackers, bus robbers and bank thieves. Gradually, he extended his criminal acts to other towns and cities far north and east of Benin.

The complicity of the police is believed to have triggered Anini’s reign of terror in 1986. In early 1986, two members of his gang were tried and prosecuted against an earlier under-the-table ‘agreement’ with the police to destroy evidence against the gang members. The incident, and Anini’s view of police betrayal, is believed to have spurred retaliatory actions by Anini. In August, 1986, a fatal bank robbery linked to Anini was reported in which a police officer (Nathaniel Egharevba)and others were killed. That same month, two officers on duty were shot at a barricade while trying to stop Anini’s car. During a span of three months, he was known to have killed nine police officers.

In an operation in August 1986, the Anini team struck at First Bank, Sabongida-Ora, where they carted away N2,000. But although the amount stolen was seen as chicken feed, many persons were killed. On September 6, same year, the Anini gang snatched a Peugeot 504 car from Albert Otoe, the driver of the famous super cop Assistant Inspector General of Police, Christopher Omeben. In snatching the car, they killed the driver and went to hide his corpse somewhere. It was not until three months later that the skeleton of the driver was spotted 16 kilometers away from Benin City, along the Benin-Agbor highway. A day after this attack, Anini, operating in a Passat car believed to have been stolen, also effected the snatching of another Peugeot 504 car near the former FEDECO office, in Benin.

Two days later, the Anini men killed two policemen in Orhiowon Local Government of the state. Still in that month, three different robbery attacks, all pointing to Anini’s involvement, took place. They include the murder of Frank Unoarumi, a former employee of the Nigerian Observer newspapers; the killing of Mrs. Remi Sobanjo, a chartered accountant, and the stealing of the Mercedes Benz car in Benin, of the Ughelli monarch, the Ovie. Before September 1986 drew to a close, Anini struck at a gas station along Wire Road, Benin, where he stole a substantial part of the day’s sales. He shot the station’s attendant and gleefully started spraying his booty along the road for people to pick. The height of Anini’s exploits, however, took place on October 1, 1986, the Independence Day when the state’s Commissioner of Police, Casmir Akagbosu was ambushed by the gang in Benin riddled his convoy in a hail of bullets. The police boss survived the attacks with serious injuries. Earlier that day also, the Anini men had gunned down a police man within the city

"The Law", as he was nicknamed, during an operation that went bad reportedly had to escape from the police by driving in reverse for a greater part of the distance from Agbor (Delta State) to Benin City (Edo State).
Also, on October 21 of same year, the Anini robbery gang terminated the life of a Benin-based medical doctor, A.O Emojeve when they gunned him down along Textile Mill Road, in Benin. Not done, Anini and gang went and robbed the Agbor branch of African Continental Bank and carted away about N46, 000. A day after the operation, Anini, The Law, turned to a ‘Father Christmas’ as he strew wads of naira notes on the ground for free pick by market men and women at a village near Benin. Anini’s image thus loomed larger than life, dwarfing those of Ishola Oyenusi, the king of robbers in the 1970s and Youpelle Dakuro, the army deserter who masterminded the most vicious daylight robbery,at Boulous Enterprises in Lagos in 1978, in which two policemen were killed. Anini thus spearheaded a four-month reign of terror between August and December 1986. Anini also reportedly wrote numerous letters to media houses using political tones of Robin Hood-like words, to describe his criminal acts.

Worried by the seeming elusiveness of Anini and his gang members, the military President, General Ibrahim Babangida then ordered a massive manhunt for the kingpin and his fellow robbers. The police thus went after them, combing every part of Bendel State where they were reportedly operating and living. The whole nation was gripped with fear of the robbers and their daredevil exploits.

However, Police manhunt failed to stop their activities; the more they were hunted, the more intensified their activities became. Some of the locals in the area even began to tell stories of their invincibility and for a while, it felt like they were never going to be caught. However, at the conclusion of a meeting of the Armed Forces Ruling Council , the Nation's then highest ruling body in October 1986, General Babangida turned to the Inspector- General of Police, Etim Inyang, and asked, ‘My friend, where is Anini?’ Apperently embarrassed, IGP Iyang could to only tell his Commander in Chief that "We are still looking for him sir". IGP Iyang was soon tender his notice of retirement from the force.

At about this time, Nigerian newspapers and journals were also publishing various reports and editorials on the ‘Anini Challenge’, the ‘Anini Saga’, the ‘Anini Factor’, ‘Lawrence Anini – the Man, the Myth’, ‘Anini, and ‘Lawrence Anini: A Robin Hood in Bendel’. The Guardian New papers asked, emphatically, in one of its reports: ‘Will they ever find Anini, “The Law”?’.

An African Proverb says "everyday for the thief ,one day for the owner, Anini's reign of terror was eventually brought to an end with his arreste by a police officer , Superintendent of Police, Kayode Uanreroro on December 3, 1986, at No 26, Oyemwosa Street, opposite Iguodala Primary School, Benin City, in company with six women. Acting on a tip-off from the locals, the policeman went straight to the house where Anini was hiding and apprehended him with very little resistance. Uanreroro led a crack 10-man team to the house, knocked on the door of the room, and Anini himself, clad in underpants, opened the door. “Where is Anini,” the police officer quickly enquired. It was believed that his girl friend had a hand in his arrest. Many are of the opinion that the girlfriend collaborated with the police and took Anini's charms away before the police arrived. Dazed as he was caught off guard and having no escape route, Anini all the same tried to be smart. “Oh, Anini is under the bed in the inner room”. As he said it, he made some moves to walk past Uanreroro and his team. In the process, he shoved and head-butted the police officer but it was an exercise in futility. Uanreroro promptly reached for his gun, stepped hard on Anini’s right toes and shot at his left ankle. Anini surged forward but the policemen took hold of him and put him in a sitting position. They then pumped more bullets into his shot leg and almost severed the ankle from his entire leg. Already, anguished by the excruciating pains, the policemen asked him, “Are you Anini?” And he replied, “My brother, I won’t deceive you; I won’t tell you lie, I’m Anini.”

He was from there taken to the police command headquarters where the state’s Police Commissioner, Parry Osayande, was waiting. While in the police net, Anini who had poor command of English and could only communicate in pidgin, made a whole lot of revelations. He disclosed, for instance that Osunbor, who had been arrested earlier, was his deputy, saying that Osunbor actually shot and wounded the former police boss of the state, Akagbosu

Anini was shot in the leg, transferred to a military hospital, and had one of his legs amputated. That was after Monday Osunbor was also captured. When Anini’s hideout was searched, police recovered assorted charms, including the one he usually wore around his waist during “operations”. It was instructive that after Anini was captured and dispossessed of his charms, the man who terrorised a whole state and who was supposed to be fearless suddenly became so lilly livered and started singing like a sparrow, making confessions. This was against public expectation of a daredevil hoodlum who would remain defiant to the very end.

Shortly after the arrest of Anini and co, the dare-devil robbers began to squeal, revealing the roles played by key police officers and men, in the aiding and abetting of criminals in Bendel State and the entire
country. Due to the amputation of his leg, Anini was confined to a wheelchair throughout his trial.
Anini particularly revealed that Chief Supretendent of Police Iyamu, who was the most senior police officer shielding the robbers, would reveal police secrets to them and then, give them logistic supports such as arms, to carry out robbery operations.

He further revealed that Iyamu, after each operation, would join them in sharing the loot. It was further exposed how Iyamu planned to kill Christopher Omeben, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Intelligence and Investigation. But Iyamu was later to be disappointed as the assailants dispatched to eliminate Omeben were only able to kill his driver, Otue, a sergeant. Iyamu, whom the robbers fondly referred to as ‘Baba’, reportedly had choice buildings in Benin City; being how he invested the loots he obtained from men of the underworld. Iyamu, on his part, denied ever knowing and collaborating with Anini. But Anini stood his ground .Of the 10 police officers Anini implicated, five were convicted. The robbery suspects, including Iyamu, were sentenced to death.

But in passing his judgement, Justice Omo-Agege remarked, “Anini will forever be remembered in the history of crime in this country, but it would be of unblessed memory. Few people if ever, would give the name to their children.” The execution of Anini and the remaining members of his gang took place on the last Saturday of March ,1987. Osunbor and CSP Iyamu had been executed few weeks earlier

Education / *JAMB To Publish Names Of Impersonators For Past 10 Years – Registrar* by Eeyaniyi(m): 4:42pm On Mar 24, 2019
Says it ‘ll expose impersonators who are now in high places As 1.99 million candidates register to write UTME By Joseph Erunke ABUJA – THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB,has said it will soon compile and released names of people who have impersonated in its examinations in the past ten years. JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede This came as the board said as it prepares to commence the 2019 Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME,billed to take place between April 11 and April 15,a total of 1,989,181 million candidates have successfully applied to sit for it. JAMB’s Registrar,Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed this yesterday, during a meeting of critical stakeholders on strategic planning and preparations for supervision and evaluation of administration of 2019 UTME. Oloyede, who decried the continuous impersonation in JAMB’s examinations despite the different measures adopted so far by the board to curb the menace, insisted that the names of impersonators in the past 10 years would soon be published to serve as deterrent to others. According to him,the development would also expose many people now in high places who had in the past impersonated in the board’s examination. Hear him:”We are making arrangements to compile and publish names of all the people that have impersonated in out examinations in the past ten years. “Some of these people impersonated even when they were already graduates. Some impersonated as undergraduates. “They impersonated using different names but the same fingerprints. Some of them are now in different high places and by the time we publish these names, those now in high places will be exposed,”he said. While disclosing that JAMB has under his leadership, introduced some new innovations for successful conduct of 2019 UTME, enjoined candidates to ensure they comply with the rules and regulations of the examinations. The examination which is expected to kick off from April 11 through 18th, 2019 would also in-cooperate candidates that are deaf, blind, including some prison inmates. He also said a total of 708 Computer Based Test centres have been approved by the Board to host the examination, nationwide. He insisted that only candidates verified through biometrics would be allowed to sit for the examination, just as it noted that those whose fingerprints may not have been captured properly but can authenticate their identity may have to travel down to JAMB headquarter in Abuja, where they would write the examination. Oloyode said any candidate who fell under such category would be catered for appropriately, including their transportation and other logistics but they would be required to take the examination under the Registrar’s presence. He said: “Any candidate that cannot be verified by BVM must not be allowed to take the examination under any guise. BVM is the only form of attendance register. “No Biometric Verification, No examination. Discretion is not allowed on this matter. “All candidates whose fingerprints could not be captured during registration from centres across the country will be brought to JAMB Headquarters to take the examination and JAMB will pay for their transportation for the two trips.” On new innovations for the UTME, Oloyode said: “a separate indicator had also been created for the deaf to differentiate them for special attention at the examination centre. Efforts are on to provide the option of special centres or mainstreaming for the blind. “We now have live report on centres that registered any candidate, the time the candidate was registered, who registered the candidate, computer system used, the location of registration. “All these are done through our enhanced monitoring system. I want to warn candidates expected to sit for its examination to ensure their biometrics were taken and verified for the examination.”

Politics / Nlc Strike: Weigh Options Before Action: Muric by Eeyaniyi(m): 5:43pm On Nov 05, 2018
NLC STRIKE: WEIGH OPTIONS BEFORE ACTION

4th November, 2018
PRESS RELEASE:

*NLC STRIKE: WEIGH OPTIONS BEFORE ACTION*

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to go ahead with its planned strike billed to start on Tuesday 6th November, 2018. This is in spite of a court order stopping NLC from embarking on a strike action. Although NLC is demanding N30,000 as minimum wage, the Federal Government (FG) has offered to pay workers N24,000 while state governments are offering N22,000.

Meanwhile the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has appealed to NLC to weigh the options properly before commencing the strike.

In a statement released on Monday, 5th November, 2018, MURIC cautioned against a strike action whose major victims will be the poor jamaaheer. According to the director of the organization, Professor Ishaq Akintola who signed the press statement, the same workers and innocent members of their families are most likely to suffer the devastating consequences of an all-out industrial action.

“NLC has directed workers to stock their homes with foodstuffs in preparation for a long strike. But can Nigerian workers sustain this? How much does an average Nigerian worker have in his bank account to enable him reserve food supplies at home? In the midst of pervasive poverty, we doubt much if the masses who have been asked by the NLC to stock foodstuffs at home will be able to afford it. The take-home pay of the average worker cannot take him home. So what is the quantity of foodstuffs he can afford to reserve at home in preparation for the strike?

“Besides, will a general strike not inform the evacuation of hundreds of sick Nigerians from hospital beds? Will it not lead to an increased number of deaths of citizens who do not have the money to access private health facilities? What will happen to accident victims during a strike?
“Socio-economic activities stand the risk of being paralysed. Banks will remain shut and even ATM machines may soon become dry. This strike may turn out to be an open invitation to hunger in the land.

“The impact on the oil sector is expected to be severe. Oil output is likely to be affected. Oil exports which hit 1.7 million barrels per day in October 2018 may come to a complete halt. It cannot be good news to stop oil exports at a time when the price of oil has risen and it is hovering between $76 and $80 after suffering a fall as low as $38 per barrel at the inception of this adminidtration.

This is capable of wreaking havoc on the economy. The naira will depreciate further, forcing prices of goods to skyrocket while both imports and exports will be affected as the ports go to sleep.

“This is why we are appealing to NLC leadership to consider the implications of a general strike at this crucial time. By the way, is NLC certain that an irrational payrise resulting from a forced increase in wages will not provoke retrenchment of workers?

“The economy was most crudely battered for sixteen years of reckless looting between 1999 and 2015. This precipitated a recession which lasted almost one year under the present regime. The quick recovery from the recession was due to the prudent management of the economy by the Buhari administration and its blockage of leakages. A general strike just when the economy is starting to look good will do workers no good.

MURIC advised NLC leaders to focus on responsible leadership, patriotic intervention and citizen-oriented actions.

Akintola asked, “Where was NLC when the National Assembly (NASS) shut down the whole nation as it went on recess for weeks ad infinitum? Where were the leaders of labour when the budget was delayed for a whole seven months? Are they telling us that they do not know the implications of prolonged delay of budgets?

“The whole nation expected NLC to stand up when the NASS deducted humongous amounts of money from the budgets of critical sectors of the economy and added same to their own.

Were NLC leaders on sabbatical at that time? Mambilla Power Plant, 2nd Niger Bridge/ancillary roads, East-West Road, Bonny-Bodo Road, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway & Itakpe-Ajaokuta Rail allocations were cut by an aggregate of N11.5 billion. The provision for construction of the Terminal Building at Enugu Airport was cut from N2billion to N500million. Wasn’t that outrageous? But does it mean nothing to NLC?

“Positive activism demands that NLC should show concern for the reckless and selfish actions of the 8th NASS. The fact that the cuts from allocations to vital sectors of the economy were added to the budget of the NASS should have struck some vital cords in the anatomy of labour leadership and spurred it to action.

“We expect NLC to strike against legislative recklessness, not only against stomach infrastructure. A government that is providing infrastructure and bringing back the glorious days of rail transportation for Nigerian workers deserves NLC’s cooperation.

“N22.6 billion was released by FG to pay pensioners of the Nigerian Railway after they have been ignored for fifteen (15) years. A government that is paying pensions to retirees who have been ignored for years deserves NLC’s understanding. For crying out loud, those 8.5 million children who are benefiting from FG’s school-feeding programme are children of workers. FG has so far spent N49 billion on the project in two years. This is a government with a human face.

“We do not wish to be misunderstood. MURIC is on the side of Nigerian workers. We also believe that the present minimum wage of N18,000 is unrealistic.

But NLC needs to time its action appropriately and put the blame where it really belongs. NLC should face the hawks in the NASS who illegally allocated N29 million monthly to themselves. NLC should lead workers and the rest of Nigerians to protest against parliamentary rascality and legislative impunity.

“In conclusion, we appeal to NLC to shelve its planned strike action and go back to the negotiation table in the interest of Nigerian workers. We call for proactive activism on the part of NLC. The Nigerian people expect the labour leaders to emancipate them from legislative tyranny. NLC’s focus should not be on the central and state governments alone. Neither should it always be about workers’ wages. We need action against greedy legislators.

Director,
Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC).

4. Dear Kwankwaso, even in JAMB I believe you know what 158 represents.
However, you can now decrease the amount of red-caps in Kano from #200 to 158.

5. Mr. Dankwambo congratulations for getting special number.
To sympathize with Dankwambo dial 111. CUSTOMERS CARE IN AIRTEL

6. Sule Lamido, your 96 represents the exact hatred you have for Buhari.
Sorry ooo but Buhari will remain in power till 2023.
You can reach 100% if you like.

7. Mr. Makarfi you scored 74, when divided by two is 37 which represents 36 states and FCT Abuja.
Well-done for this Maths.
You are good in Mathemat getics right?⚒⛏⚙⚔
Now, calculate the actual amount you spent that gave you 7th position and divide it by number of delegates who voted for you.

8. Kabiru Turaki, I heard that you have scored 65 votes and you will be 65 years in the next four years. Well-done ooo but mind you, you can only spend these four years in Jigawa not in Aso Villa.

9. Bafarawa, your 48 votes verified that you you spent 48 months from 1999 to 2003 and 48 more from 2003 to 2007.
What is not clear now is this statement of yours. "I didn’t receive any salary for eight years as Sokoto State governor".

10. David Mark, Nigeria has 36 states please not 35. Forget about the dollars you have seen, Rivers is also a state in Nigeria not in America.

11. Jonah Jang with 19 votes. Where are you running to? We are still in 2018 not 2019 please.
Nigerians are still waiting for you to throw more light on the new Bermuda triangle in Jos popularly known as Dura-Du Pond of blood.

12. Datti Baba Ahmed you can clap for yourself since your five votes tally the number of letters in your first name. D+A+T+T+I=5.

politics is not that predictable, if agbaje can pull a massive 600k votes out I bet you, ambode would double that in any party against sanwolu, tinubu's last card is an impeachment threat should ambode crosscarpet, and that can be stalled
n

The question is, how can it be stalled?

The film was released in the United States on June 29, 1988, ultimately earning $289 million at the global box office.

Eddie Murphy plays Akeem Joffer, the crown prince of the wealthy African nation of Zamunda, who comes to the United States in the hopes of finding a woman he can marry.

Crown prince Akeem Joffer grows weary of his pampered lifestyle on his 21st birthday and wishes to do more for himself.

When his parents, King Jaffe and Queen Aeoleon, present him with an arranged bride-to-be, Akeem takes action.

Seeking an independent woman who loves him for himself and not his social status, Akeem and his best friend/personal aide, Semmi, travel to the New York City borough of Queens and rent a squalid tenement in the neighborhood of Long Island City under the guise of poor foreign students.

Evergreen movie!!!

Politics / Re: NJC Places 3 Justices On Watch List by Eeyaniyi(m): 10:50pm On Jun 04, 2017
post=57183215:
The National Judicial Council, NJC, has issued a serious warning to three Justices and placed them on watch list for different offences based on petitions against them.

The are:

1. M. N. Esowe of the National Industrial Court - Given serious warning

2. Justice Adolphus Enebeli of the Rivers State High Court of Justice

3. Justice Bassey Frank Etuk of the Akwa-Ibom State High Court.

The NJC however, discontinued the probe of Justice T. U. Uzokwe, Chief Judge, Abia State; Justice Okoroafor of the Abia State High Court and Justice Jude Okeke of the FCT High Court.

The homes of the suspended judges were in the midnight of October 8, 2017 raided by the DSS, where the sum of N271.7million in both local and foreign currencies were allegedly recovered.

The DSS said the raids were conducted after a series of “sting operations” targeting judges of Supreme, Appeal and High Courts who were being watched for “corruption and other acts professional misconduct.”

“We have been monitoring the expensive and luxurious lifestyle of some of the judges, as well as complaints from the concerned public over judgments obtained fraudulently,” an official of the service, Garba Abdullahi, had said.

The development threw the country’s judiciary into chaos, with lawyers expressing divergent views.
