President Donald Trump on Wednesday recognized the disputed city of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital — a historic decision that overturns decades of US policy and risks triggering a fresh spasm of violence in the Middle East. Trump calls for calm and tolerance after Jerusalem decision “I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” Trump said from the White House. “It’s the right thing to do.” The declaration calls into question seven decades of deliberate diplomatic ambiguity about the final status of a holy city vociferously claimed by both Israelis and Palestinians. Trump also kicked off the process of moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, making good on a campaign promise dear to evangelical Christian and right-wing Jewish voters — as well as donors. He said his decision marked the start of a “new approach” to solving the thorny conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. Trump’s predecessors — from Bill Clinton to George Bush — made similar promises on the campaign trail but quickly reneged upon taking office, and the burden of war and peace. This most unlikely of presidents, who came to office with no foreign policy experience and denouncing experts, was determined to show his arrival in Washington spells the end of business as usual. “Many presidents have said they want to do something and they didn’t do it,” Trump said in the hours leading up to his historic address. “Whether it’s courage or they changed their mind, I can’t tell you,” he said. “I think it’s long overdue.” – Outrage – The announcement leaves many angry US allies and leaders across the Middle East trying to find a measured response and hoping that the tinderbox region is not destined for yet another round of bloodletting. Pope Francis joined a list of leaders warning of a historic misstep that could trigger a surge of violence. “I cannot silence my deep concern over the situation that has emerged in recent days,” the pontiff said Wednesday, one day after speaking by phone with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas. The pontiff added that maintaining Jerusalem’s status quo was important “in order to avoid adding new elements of tension to an already volatile world that is wracked by so many cruel conflicts.” In a frantic series of calls, the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the European Union, France, Germany and Turkey also warned Trump against the move. – Three ‘days of rage’ – Moving the US embassy will probably take years to implement, but the repercussions of Trump’s decision are likely to be swift. Hundreds of Palestinians burned US and Israeli flags as well as pictures of Trump in the Gaza Strip, while relatively small clashes erupted near the flashpoint West Bank city of Hebron. The Palestinian armed Islamist movement Hamas has threatened to launch a new “intifada,” or uprising. Palestinians called for three days of protests — or “days of rage” — starting Wednesday. Anticipating protests, US government officials and their families were ordered to avoid Jerusalem’s Old City and the West Bank, though the situation remained largely calm Wednesday. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for a summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the main pan-Islamic body, in Istanbul on December 13 “to display joint action among Islamic countries” over Jerusalem. “Such a step will only play into the hands of terror groups,” Erdogan said at a joint news conference in Ankara after talks with Jordan’s King Abdullah II. Jordan and the Palestinians also called for an emergency meeting of the Arab League in Cairo. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refrained from commenting on the issue on Wednesday in his first speech since Trump’s plan was confirmed. – Peace still possible, US says – Most of the international community does not formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, insisting the issue can only be resolved in negotiations. The White House argues the move would not prejudge final talks and would represent the reality that west Jerusalem is and will continue to be part of Israel under any settlement. Critics say Trump’s approach could extinguish his own efforts to broker Middle East peace while igniting the flames of conflict in a region already reeling from crises in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Qatar. Israel seized the largely Arab eastern sector of Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it, claiming both sides of the city as its capital. The Palestinians want the eastern sector as the capital of their future state. Trump was pushed to act on the embassy as a result of the 1995 law, which stated that the city “should be recognized as the capital of the state of Israel” and the US embassy be moved there. A waiver has been invoked by successive US presidents, postponing the move on grounds of “national security” once every six months, meaning the law has never taken effect. Several peace plans have unravelled in the past decades over the issue of how to divide sovereignty or oversee holy sites in Jerusalem. http://skytrendnews.com/2017/12/06/breaking-history-made-trump-recognises-jerusalem-israels-capital-allies-angry/ |

Dismisses Abdullahi’s book as sore grapes, full of lies, gossip The media adviser to former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze has responded to a statement by Borno Governor Kashim Shettima where he accused the ex-President of bad governance and poor choices, dismissing the Governor’s claims as parochial and jaundiced. In a statement issued on Friday Jonathan’s spokesman strongly debunked the allegations of poor governance and highlighted Jonathan’s key achievements which he said were yet to be matched. He further challenged the Governor to come clean over the roles he played in the kidnap of the Chibok school girls, stressing that it goes beyond the dismissive claim that “Jonathan thought I kidnapped Chibok girls.” The statement said: “He should be able to tell us if it was Jonathan’s poor choices that led the Governor to expose students of Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok to avoidable danger, in total disregard of a Federal Government directive to the Governors in the three states most affected by Boko Haram to relocate their students writing the West African School Certificate Examinations to safe zones.” The statement further disclaimed the book entitled “On a Platter of Gold- How Jonathan won and lost Nigeria” written by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, as sore grapes and full of lies and gossip. Below is the full text of the statement: Our attention has been drawn to the claims made by the Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima on Thursday at a book launch to the effect that former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan wasted the goodwill he commanded because of bad governance and poor choices in office. He was also said to have accused Jonathan of believing that he was behind the kidnap of the Chibok girls. As a man who had never seen anything good in the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan on account of party and other differences, it has remained our considered view that in a democracy, Governor Kashim Shettima and others like him are entitled to their opinion, no matter how jaundiced. However, it is a sad commentary on the character of some of our politicians that they go to any length to make spurious statements, in pursuit of the sad narrative to remain politically correct. We cannot be deceived by his crocodile tears and patronizing claim that “Jonathan is essentially a decent man”, which is a ploy he deployed to justify his false allegation of a lost glory. The man who today speaks of squandered goodwill should be able to tell Nigerians what percentage of the votes Jonathan got in 2011 from Borno State at the height of that his envisaged glory according to Shettima, and what it became in subsequent elections. What was obvious yesterday and has remained so today is that Governor Shettima and those who think like him never liked Jonathan based on some parochial and paternalistic sentiments. We didn’t expect anything less from Governor Shettima, knowing the ignoble roles he played in frustrating the war waged by the past administration against Boko Haram, even in his own Borno State. He should be able to tell us if it was Jonathan’s poor choices that led the Governor to expose students of Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok to avoidable danger, in total disregard of a Federal Government directive to the Governors in the three states most affected by Boko Haram to relocate their students writing the West African School Certificate Examinations to safe zones. The Governor is now denying that he had no hand in the kidnap of the Chibok girls even before anybody accused him of culpability. However, we share the view of those who insist that the Governor had other things up his sleeve when he promised the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) that he would secure the girls, and ended up doing the very opposite, by deliberately abandoning them to their fate, without any security presence in their school. It is instructive that while other Governors in the zone heeded the security advice, Shettima remained the only one that flagrantly flouted it. Should we also fail to point out that his decision to reward the principal of Chibok Secondary School, who was uncharacteristically absent on the night terrorists stormed the school, with the post of a commissioner, did throw up more questions than answers? Talking about accountability, perhaps, Shettima should also do well to explain to the good people of Borno State and Nigerians what he did with the over N60 billion Local Governments fund, left by his predecessor, Senator Ali Mode Sheriff. We understand Governor shettima and those who spoke like him accused Jonathan of bad governance and poor choices, and we would like to know if it was bad governance that led Jonathan to assemble a-yet-to be matched crop of dynamic cabinet and economic management team made up of tested technocrats like Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in Finance ministry, Dr. Shamsuddeen Usman in Planning, Mr Olusegun Aganga in Trade and Investments as well as Dr. Akinwumi Adesina leading the charge in Agriculture. The efforts of the Jonathan administration in repositioning Nigeria’s economy remain self-evident and it must have in deed been poor choices at their best for Jonathan and his team to have recorded the following key achievements: * Nigeria’s Gross domestic Product rose to $503bn in 2013 and became Africa’s largest economy and 26th in the world; from 3rd and 46th respectively. * Nigeria became the number one destination for Foreign Direct Investment in Africa under former President Jonathan, with the numbers rising from US$24.9 million as at 2007 to over US$ 35 billion in 2014. * Jonathan Government delivered over 25,000 kilometres of motorable federal roads from just a quarter of that number in 2011. * The Jonathan Administration resuscitated the railways in the country after about 30-years of hiatus *Jonathan’s Agricultural Transformation Agenda ended fertiliser racketeering, encouraged more young Nigerians to take to farming, boosted local food production and took the country closer to self-sufficiency in food production by recording more than 50% reduction in food imports. It was as a result of this that the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, for the first time, voted Nigeria the largest producer of Cassava in the world. * Power generation under Jonathan was boosted to about 5,000 megawatts in 2014 up from 2,000 megawatts in 2011. * Prices of food and other household items remained stable and inflationary pressure was down to a single digit. * Under Jonathan, Nigeria controlled clinically Ebola outbreak to the admiration of the whole world, became Guinea-worm-free and also eradicated polio, with United States billionaire and renowned philanthropist Bill Gates, praising Nigeria’s successes against polio as one of the great world achievements of 2014. Sadly polio has returned to the country with the likes of Shettima in charge of the endemic states. * Under Jonathan Life expectancy in Nigeria rose from 47 years in 2010 to 54 years in 2015. *Just before Jonathan left office, CNN Money projected that Nigeria’s economy in 2015 would become the third fastest growing economy in the world at 7% behind China at 7.3% and Qatar at 7.1%. Was it bad governance and poor choices that reformed the political and electoral processes to the extent that the United Nations is now pleading with the government of the day to strive to maintain the standards established by Jonathan? Fortunately, Nigerians know where they stand with all of their leaders. All those who are calling Jonathan names today, and accusing him of having become quite unpopular, should simply take a walk on the streets of any Nigerian city as real leaders do. That way, they will accurately gauge their own approval and test their popularity with the Nigerian people. On the book entitled “On a Platter of Gold- How Jonathan won and lost Nigeria” written by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, we have watched for some time as some outrageous fabrications are extracted from its pages day after day by the media. When the publication of the book, with an ominous title was first mooted, we knew it will be full of bile and sour grapes. We didn’t expect truth, sincerity and accuracy of narration, given that the author who was sacked from his ministerial position by the subject of the book, is now the spokesman for the ruling APC. We will therefore like to dissociate former President Jonathan from the book’s salacious contents, with all the obvious distortions, lies and exaggerations. Its pages are populated with gossip, politically influenced newspaper articles, uncoordinated raw data and unproven claims. Sadly, the author did not help matters, as there was no rigor or indepth investigations towards establishing the veracity of the allegations the book contained. For instance, it is ridiculous for the author to have claimed that the President was forced to sack a certain minister by another cabinet member when the obvious truth known to all key members of the administration was that the President acted based on the recommendation of an internal committee that investigated the matter. This, unfortunately, is the kind of baseless claims and narrative that run through the entire book, and it would be pointless devoting our time towards making a case by case response to all its ridiculous allegations. We will like to remind Nigerians of what former President Jonathan said earlier in the year when a similar book was published, that only the key actors in his Government and in the 2015 Presidential elections could give an exact account of what transpired, not speculations and conjectures by third party spectators. That time will come someday. Ikechukwu Eze Media Adviser to Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan http://leadership.ng/2017/12/01/ex-president-jonathan-replies-gov-shettima-chibok-girls/ |
Former President of Nigeria, the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, wanted to pick former Delta State Governor, James Ibori, as his running mate in the 2007 presidential election instead of Goodluck Jonathan. This is contained in a new book, entitled ‘On a Platter of Gold: How Jonathan Won and Lost Nigeria’, written by Bolaji Abdullahi — who served as a minister under Jonathan from 2011-2014 Abdullahi claims that after three governors from the South-South — where vice-presidency was zoned to by the PDP — had been ruled out for one reason or the other during deliberations, Yar’Adua asked Nuhu Ribadu, then-chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), about Ibori. This got President Olusegun Obasanjo angry and Yar’Adau quickly made a u-turn. Abdullahi wrote: “During deliberations on the issue of zoning, the party leadership had also agreed that the running mate to whoever emerged from the North, would come from the South-South. This remained sacrosanct. The question was: who the running mate should now be, with Odili out of the picture. One major concern was that the eligible South-South governors were not only ambitious, they were all street smart and could easily overwhelm the mild-mannered Yar’Adua. “Victor Attah and Donald Duke were ruled out on that account. However, even though it could be argued that Odili was more ambitious than those two, he had also contributed the most to the party. Now that his nomination had suffered a misadventure, the South-South options were even more limited. “As they agonised over their limited options, Yar’Adua casually asked Ribadu in Hausa, ‘Shi mutumin Delta din nan fa?’ (‘What about the Delta person?’) He probably had forgotten that though not fluent in the language, Obasanjo could follow simple conversations in Hausa. Before Ribadu could muster a response, Obasanjo flared up again. Over his dead body would Ibori be Vice President. Ribadu knew at the time that Ibori had an outstanding case with the Metropolitan Police in London. “When Ribadu dropped the bombshell, Yar’Adua relented and said, almost apologetically, that he had not been aware that Ibori had such a thing hanging over him; otherwise he would not have brought up the Delta governor’s name. In any case, those close to Ibori at the time said he had only been interested in becoming the minister of petroleum resources. The search continued.” It was at this stage that Jonathan’s name cropped up — and he initially rejected the slot. “Goodluck Jonathan, the Governor of Bayelsa State, who had succeeded his impeached boss only about a year before never came up for discussion. Until now. Ribadu said all through the EFCC’s investigation of Alamieyeseigha in Bayelsa, nothing was found on Jonathan,” wrote the author. “Moreover, he did not do anything to obstruct the investigation or to encourage it, as many ambitious deputies would have done. This indicated that Jonathan could be trusted with power. Even more significantly, he was Ijaw. By making an Ijaw man vice president, Obasanjo would have taken a major step in redressing the cry of marginalization by the Niger Delta; and this would go a long way in restoring peace to the otherwise troubled region. Obasanjo would not need any further persuading. It was shortly afterwards that Odili was invited in and informed that he would not be announced as running mate that morning. “Yar’Adua eventually read his acceptance speech, but was silent on the issue of running mate. For those unaware of the intrigues that had played out all through the night, there was nothing strange about this. The running mate did not have to be announced at the convention venue. It was also not unusual for a candidate to ask for more time to name his running mate. But by daybreak, the rumour mill had gone wild. Names had started flying around as possible replacements for Odili. “Meanwhile, Odili’s team had busied itself through the night trying to prepare a response to some of the weighty allegations against their boss. They were ready by 10:00 am on Sunday morning, but by then the horse had already bolted from the stable. “Without much fuss, Jonathan was invited to the Presidential Villa and informed of the decision of President Obasanjo and the party leaders to name him as the running mate to Yar’Adua. His immediate reaction was that he didn’t want to be Vice President. Some said when he first got wind of the decision earlier in the day, he had reacted the same way, saying he was happy as the Governor of Bayelsa State, which in any case, made more sense to him than this vice presidency business. “However, with the combined force of President Obasanjo, Tony Anenih and Yar’Adua mounting pressure on him, he could not hold out for too long. By 4pm that Sunday, Goodluck Jonathan was announced as the running mate to Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in the 2007 presidential election.” http://dailypost.ng/2017/11/24/yaradua-wanted-ibori-vice-president-instead-jonathan-abdullahi/amp/ |

Israel’s political and military leadership appears to have concluded that a conflict with Lebanon’s Hezbollah is becoming increasingly likely, despite months of growing warnings that a third Lebanese war would be more dangerous and deadly than the last war in 2006. The mounting tensions on the northern border with Syria and Lebanon have increased in recent months as Israel has recognised its assumption that Hezbollah – a key ally fighting with the Assad regime – would be chewed up in a protracted Syrian conflict is badly mistaken as the war has turned rapidly in Bashar al-Assad’s favour. Instead the Iranian-backed group appears to be emerging from the Syrian war as a battle-hardened and largely conventional military force whose missiles have been heavily resupplied by Tehran despite dozens of Israeli airstrikes on convoys and depots. Amid threats by Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, that Israel would intervene rather than allow Iran or Iranian-backed groups to establish themselves on Israel’s border, the sense of growing risk of conflict has been given added impetus in the recent convergence of Israeli, Saudi Arabian and US rhetoric against Iran. The Guardian view on Lebanon: great power rivalry in a tiny state In Israel, however, the talk of war with Hezbollah has escalated. with top military and political figures detailing the probable shape of a future conflict, and Israel’s then air force chief suggesting that Lebanoncould be subjected to a huge aerial bombardment in the opening days of a campaign with civilian casualties highly probable. “If a war breaks out in the northern arena we need to act with full force from the beginning,” Israel’s outgoing air force commander, Maj Gen Amir Eshel, told the Herzliya conference in June shortly before stepping down. Hezbollah now has 20,000 highly trained fighters, 25,000 reservists and upwards of 100,000 missiles, according to estimates. Photograph: Mahmoud Zayyat/AFP/Getty Images “What we could do in 34 days during the second Lebanon war we can now do in 48 to 60 hours. The growth of our strength has not been linear. “This is potential power unimaginable in its scope, much different to what we have seen in the past and far greater than people estimate.” Speaking at a ceremony in October, Israel’s combative rightwing defence minister, Avigdor Lieberman, suggested that the Lebanese military could also be considered an enemy combatant alongside Hezbollah. “We’re talking about Hezbollah and the Lebanese military and, unfortunately, this is the reality,” he told soldiers at Israel’s military headquarters, suggesting that the Lebanese army had lost its independence and had become an integral part of Hezbollah’s network. “If war breaks out in the north, we have to open with all our strength from the start,” Lieberman said. The reality, however, is that despite remarks by Netanyahu in talking up the coincidence of Saudi-led Sunni opposition to Iran and its proxies in the Middle East, the recent bellicose Saudi moves complicate issues forIsrael. Israeli commentators – as well as the former US ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro – have also warned of the risk of Israel getting sucked into a conflict on Saudi terms. “It is plausible that the Saudis are trying to create the context for a different means of contesting Iran in Lebanon – an Israeli-Hezbollah war,”said Shapiro in an op-ed. Avigdor Lieberman, the Israeli defence minister: ‘If war breaks out in the north, we have to open with all our strength from the start.’ Photograph: Ronen Zvulun/Reuters He added: “Israeli leaders will want to take care not to find themselves backed into a premature confrontation by the manoeuvres of their allies who sit in Riyadh.” Shapiro has not been alone in warning of the risk. The military commentator of the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Amos Harel, delivered a similar warning, not least over an unplanned escalation from “a local incident gone out of control”. “If Saudi Arabia is deliberately stoking the flames between the sides [Israel and Hezbllah], this becomes a tangible danger.” Other commentators have pointed to Saudi Arabian policy in Syria, Yemen and Qatar that has been as reckless as it has been ineffective, warning an intervention in Lebanon would result in a stronger Iranian influence there. The reality, as made clear by the head of the Israeli military’s intelligence directorate, Herzl Halevi, in a speech last year is that any conflict in the north with Hezbollah would “not be simple or easy”. Since the war in 2006 Hezbollah has emerged as the most capable and resilient non-state military actor, with 20,000 full-time and highly trained fighters, 25,000 reservists and upwards of 100,000 missiles, according to estimates. Recent large-scale Israeli war games suggest too that any conflict could play out in an entirely different way to the last war, with 1,500-2,000 rockets being fired per day and even efforts to infiltrate Israeli communities by fighters crossing the border Then there is the wider question of whether a limited war could be contained without bringing in other actors. Writing in Foreign Affairs in October, Dmitry Adamsky, who teaches diplomacy and strategy at the Interdisciplinary Centre in Herzliya, asked a question long festering in the background. “Israeli strategists do not question the likelihood of a war with Hezbollah,” wrote Adamsky. “But they wonder how Russia, which is a comrade-in-arms with Iran and Hezbollah in Syria, would respond to such a conflict.” Finally, if there is one thing mitigating in favour of rhetoric rather than military action, it is the reputation of Netanyahu for being as chronically risk averse as he is fond of making big threats over the years. http://puoreports.com/2017/11/11/israels-leadership-talks-up-another-war-with-hezbollah-in-lebanon/ |

The Nigerian Navy says it is seeking more manpower to increase security platforms across the coast of the Niger Delta region of the country to ensure maximum security of lives and property on the waters. Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Victor Adedipe made this known at the end of a familiarization tour to some Naval formations at the NNS Victory Jetty in Calabar, the Cross River State Capital. Adedipe noted that with the reccurring threats witnessed on the waterways, there is need for improved and sophisticated manpower for constant surveillance on the waters. Inspecting, the Eastern Naval Command formations in Calabar and its environs, the FOC while commending Governor Ben Ayade for its security apparatus, gave an assurance of the Navy’s resolve to check all the outlets of militancy across the creeks in the State. He used the opportunity to advocate for more funding towards the implementation of the Nigerian Navy transformation plan which according to him, allows for a long term planning pattern to function effectively. “Platforms, equipment, manpower are recurrent challenges and that’s why from time to time, we think through on how to solve them. We’re trying to look at how we can solve them depending on the availability of resources.” http://www.channelstv.com/2017/07/11/navy-seeks-equipment-manpower-combat-crime-niger-delta/
