^^^Vitrified tiles are very similar to ceramic tiles, but are made with slightly different elements. The clay is mixed with quartz and feldspar before it is heated in the kiln. These extra ingredients melt, creating a glass element inside the tile. This glass component makes the vitrified tiles very hard and resistant to any type of absorption. The floor tiles in the bathroom has a shinny surface like vitrified tiles.

Vitrified tiles cost a couple of dollars more per square foot because of their extra qualities. Vitrified tiles also need a stronger adhesive than ceramic tiles, which can cost more in installation.

I was told there's a bigger tile market in Orile. They tend to cost between $8 and $20 dollars per square foot here in the US.

@Sprumbaba, I'm still looking for two more cars to fill the container. I would let you know once the required number of cars have been met; then, I'd be able to determine the space for the tiles.

@ Casemoney. Thanks for all the info. Where are you getting your tiles from in the US? Can you be more specific about the tiles you are using for the different rooms in terms of sizes and types. Do you have a good tiler in Nigeria. I will be starting my tiling soon. My email is folajimi@verizon.net

I will like to correct you that Casey was right. You should not claim you know it all. You also have not done your research very well.  There are 2 types of Cut inTiles:

1. Rectified
2. Un-rectified Tiles

Both type of cuts need spacers but rectified could use the thinnest grout and thinnest spacer.

Furthermore, in Naija, we dont know the difference between Porcelain tiles and Ceramic tiles, Tile Na Tile. The line you are calling is what they call Grout lines . The norm is to march your grout line with the color of your Tiles not just white cement on brown tiles.
If you need a book on Tiling I can send one to you to guide you in doing your tiling project.
I supervise custom flooring projects and Import them as well.
I purposely placed this 3 tiles together for you to see. The 2 with closed edge is Rectified, while the other one with space (That has a gap) is un-rectified.

The tiler should have used spacers when setting up the tiles. As for the spaces tell him to use grout with matching color and not cement.

@ egin, when Bill Gates developed the internet, he solved a lot of problems in the world, if you are against internet contractors or internet as a whole, thank you, but the whole world is trending towards the internet so don't fight the internet. On trust, well you have never tried anything here, so we might never be able to guess if you can do better than Brabus.

@all, I love those who tried, even if they fail, they actually tried something, for it is better to try and fail than not try at all. Action beats inaction anyday.

Bill Gates did not develop the internet. I know what I am talking about. The video revealed a lot of things that Brabus pictures didn't. Going by other people's comment I think I was right telling potential home owners to be careful of internet building contractors as pictures can sometimes be deceptive. Let us try to keep this a learning thread.
Properties / Re: Building A Luxury Block Of Flats: Day-to-day Updates (with pictures) by egin(m): 6:05pm On Oct 16, 2011
I watched the video. Is Brabus a real contractor or just a fake? This is an eye opener especially for folks abroad, do not rely on pictures on the internet, you have to make every effort to see things for yourself. Beware of internet building contractors. A word is enough for the wise. The quality of work is below expectation. We need more of this video. Do not trust anyone.

Naira depreciates to lowest level in two years

The naira on Wednesday fell to its lowest level in over two years against the United States’ dollar.

This, according to foreign exchange dealers, is as a result of the continued inability of the Central Bank of Nigeria to meet the demand for the dollar; a development which they said had stretched for straight 21 days.

At the inter-bank market, the naira closed at N157.92 to the dollar, down from Tuesday’s figure of N157.20. Traders told Reuters that the current position of the naira was its weakest since August 14, 2009, when it hit N158 per dollar.

Out of $560.54m requested for by dealers at the official window on Wednesday, the apex bank only sold $350m at N154.42 to the dollar. The CBN had the preceding day sold $350m at N153.91 as against $467.6m demanded by dealers.

“The initiatives taken by the CBN both in raising MPR and other measures of tightening our fiscal policy may mean well but are telling on the forex market,” the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Atlass Portfolios Limited, Mr. Ubale Yahaya, told our correspondent.

“The naira for some time now has persistently fallen against the dollar and this is not good for our currency.”

The CBN, among its other reforms, had on Monday raised the Monetary Policy Rate by 50 basis points from 8.75 to 9.25 per cent.

Meanwhile, traders stressed that the pressure on the naira was largely due to the actions of the regulatory bank, as they argued that the apex financial institution had over time refused to meet the demands of dealers.

“The central bank has consistently allowed the depreciation of the naira at its auction in past months and with a large inventory of unmet demand, putting further pressure on the available dollar stocks at the inter-bank market,” a dealer told Reuters.

According to traders, the inter-bank market usually takes a cue from the trends at the bi-weekly foreign exchange auction.

They however, noted that local unit of US energy firm, Exxon Mobil, sold about $50m to selected banks, but it was not enough to provide support for the naira.

The traders expressed worries that the local currency might continue its downward plunge if the apex bank failed to intervene.

“The naira is going to continue to experience steady depreciation until the end of the year as long as there is strong demand and the CBN fails to meet market expectations,” another trader, who pleaded anonymity said.

more pics(as@today)
they ain't so bad if you ask me!
Peace!!!!
The total money spent so far is still @ it is
except of the little cash I spent in casting the gate!!!
In my previous post, I have included the cost of standing my
gate, doing the coping around, and have included the cost of the gate
too the total amount which was 7.1 and like I mention then,
all the materials bought are still not in the pictures.
I still have more than enough roofing sheet to roof the security house
which is a 1 bedroom BQ and around 700 blocks of 6" or so!!!!
Though I have collect 16 pieces of 9" blocks which I've not paid for yet
I don't want to pay because the 700 blocks I have paid for that is still the
block industry has not yet being delivered as they are awaiting my orders for
them to do so!!!
I will still need some more 9" blocks for the security house private soak-away pit
so when they supply me with the blocks, it will be covert and deducted from the 6"
blocks I still have with them! Again as @ today, I have around 13 bags of cement
left. Which I will use to complete coping of the fence.
Every other charges to this stage as being included in the previous total.
The only thing left is the block work for the security house which I've brought some update
on today!!!!! I will still bring some more update as the work proceed!!!!

Also, the aluminum windows had been completed. I ask them to keep it till Tuesday or so
when I will ask them to come and install it!
Peace!!!!

It took less than 1 week to complete the windows. Can I have the name and number of this guy?

@ Demain_man
Check out this quotations for aluminum windows. Please note
the quoatation was forwarded to me my the engineer who will
be doing my POP work for me. He has all the contact for people
that does everything related to building. He is also a very religious
person and he's very honest! He txt the guy in my presence to
send him the quotation of aluminum windows. Later in the day the
guy forward it to him. And he forward it to me(I believe this is a very
honest quotation because the guy at first thought it was the Engineer
that needs the aluminum).

Aluminum window for sliding (imported)
4 by 4 = Each 7,000 x 10 = 70,000
5 by 4 = Each 12,000 x 2 = 24,000
2 by 2 = Each 4,000 x 2 = 12,000
Installation /transport = 20,000
Total: =N=126,000

Aluminum Sliding window(Tower Thick)
4 by 4 = each 10,000 x10 = 100,000
5 by 4 = each 15,000 x 2 = 30,000
2 by 2 = each 7,000 x 3 = 21,000
Installation/transport = 20,000
Total: =N=171,000.00

Quotation for aluminum casement window(they didn't metion if this is Towers Nigeria or imported. Though it is most likely to be tower's product).

4 by 4 = Each 28,000 x 10 nos = 280,000
5 by 4 = Each 32,000 x 2 nos = 64,000
2 by 2 = 9,000x 3 nos = 27,000
Total : =N=271,000.00(excluding installation)

But when the guy met with me, and gave me his own
quotation, it amounts to 470k plus!!! I guess because he
saw a big house!

Bros kindly compare the above prices and you will notice that they are not same. Towers aluminum is a Nigeria made aluminum and is more expensive/durable than all those imported ones, and again it is one of the best. First you need to know what you want, and use that to do you bargain!!!! Towers aluminum is more advice-able. But if you are not very much interested in quality, you can use the imported ones. Also, sometimes you may be paying for a quality one and they may mix it for you(imported an nigeria). And you will not know. What I advice you to do is to first try to know what you want and use that to do you bargain!

The total is N371,000 not N271,000

Am Alone:

@ Midas02

I completely disagree with you! Julius Berger or one of those Arab Contractors Company don't use gravel because they know it's not the best
not because it is not available. Forget about the availability. Gravel is readily available. And for your information. Kindly go and check all those old bridges built in
Nigeria about 4 decades back and you will notice that most of them were built with gravel.

Anybody who knows Ajegunle of Olodi Apapa? A bridge that joined Ajegunle to Apapa(boundry bridge)That bridge was built 2 decades back and it is now about 23 years of age. That same bridge collapsed December last year! And till date the local government had not fixed it and its kind of causing a lot
of traffic around that area!!!(abeg point to moi the one wey them build with granite wey don collapse).
Civilization has changed a lot of things. Gravel is two time cheaper than granite.
So Sir Midas, what about those small storeyed buildings some of these construction company built? Do you want to tell me that there is not enough gravel to build them?
Or even their is not enough. Why don't they mix them with granite at least to save cost?(this people wants to maximize their profit too you know) The book you red all this thing from I can swear that they are as old(that is if not older) than Nebuchadnezzar!!!!! grin grin grin
Scientist are making research everyday on how to better our lives. Gravel was used, but that was then.
There is a better alternative now! There are enough gravel! As in more than enough to cover bar beach! So don't use that as an excuse!!!!
When one try to make a point, some will even say their great granny house was build a century ago with clay.
And I ask them. Why don't you build yours with clay at least to save cost?

As at now, one of the best materials for construction are steel(I stand to be corrected)
modern sky scrappers are built with steel(not niaja o). Because its durability is far more higher than
granite! And steel is more expensive to build with.
We call it granite because that is what it is widely known as in this part of the world.
Like I said before, some of your statements are right. But when you say granite and
gravel are same. Bros leave that thing!!!!!

If you need 3.2million tons of gravel and you think it cannot be made available
please give me the contract!!! Like I said before, gravel is ok. But the problem with
it is the dirt that comes with it. And the big stones that comes with it as well. Granite
is better than gravel that is why construction company uses them. Who wouldn't want
to save money Granite is very durable. Even a small gutter that construction company
will want to cast that will take less than a tipper of gravel, they will use granite.
THIS IS A BLIND ARGUMENT!!! AS IN I REST MY CASE angry angry angry

The picture below shows the bridge the collapsed in minnesota in 2007. It was built with steel and granite and still collapsed. Let us stop these arguments and remained focused on the cost of building-----------------------
