@dygeasy. Thank you for cutting the Gordian Knot and enlightening us more on this machiavellian tactics of admission.

Dygeasy: Not to be sentimental here. Let's face the truth and stop being defensive. We're all just ordinary students of UNILORIN.

No be my papa's property.

That said, the issue of UNILORIN's method of admission has been treated and overflogged countless number of times. It is a known fact that cannot be disproved that getting admitted into UNILORIN ISN'T on merit. No point mincing words.

All an aspirant needs are;
*A good post-utme score (above 50 for better chances)
*Connection.
*Luck and God's favour. (these two go hand in hand)

There's nothing like cut-off marks or anything for each course. That enough tells us what we need to know.

There's no need to be unnecessarily defensive.

mystolad: relax bro....
I don't like it when people only see negativity in all instances. Quite sure u read @iamjoy's testimony.

the issue of connection comes in as soon as school announces cut off mark. Meaning, so far ur score is above the stated mark u r qualified for admission. In a job interviews d best candidates r not considered for employments most time. Connection is when you back up ur effort with familiarity. Connection can be humanly or divinity. Someone said " if u can't familiarize and you can't fast n pray den u need someone to that for u else, OYO"

When you in are in Rome,u act like Romans. Also, every community has its government built on a constitution. In unilorin 4.50 n 4.94 are in same first class range, meaning you will addressed as a first-class student which implies to candidate who scored btw 50 and 100.

you are making your weakness obvious. U sound brilliant and intelligent but u r afraid of defeat. Wait till the end of admission process before u judge. You will definitely hear better testimonies than @iamjoy's soon.

wish you the best in all your endeavor.
From the bottom of my heart, I truly appreciate you for taking your time to criticize me constructively. Not that I am afraid of defeat, for in this life DEFEAT/VICTORY are inevitable. Because the existence of one accentuates the other.
My philosophy of life has always been to be proactive as I could be, because making contingency plans has always saved me from the desert of disappointments. Am always on guard to welcome whatever nature decides to dish out as verdict
I neither get excited nor despondent by the element of surprises, and what this admission odyssey turns out to be shall have no encumbrances in my usual foray of life.
I welcome all manners of criticisms as long as they are dispassionately reformative.

Alpet: You posted this out of frustration.

How sure are u that d said woman is a staff of d university?

On what basis did u concluded that she is a staff in d university?

As a literate person, you should know that any staff of d university will not take bribe to help u for an admission. Whyhuh Because she has integrity and is aware of d fact that she can be prosecuted for d offence if known to d management and her career will be at stake.

Thank God for saving u from scammers.

We in University of Ilorin don't pay ASUU to avoid strike. If u re admitted u will know d reason for that.
Aw much are we paying that is enough to neglect d grant of d federal govt. More federal universities are paying more than we do and still partake in d ASUU strike and are even lagging behind us. For ur information, my faculty, faculty of cis is d faculty paying d highest fee at d rate of #72,000 approximately as a fresher (d fee increased last session and it was because a pc tablet was to be given to freshers and they gave it to them) and #30k+ for returning students, no hidden charges in unilorin except #5000 as an additional fee for change of course for those that either changed their course or the university admitted them for another course other than what they applied for. Only library fee of less than #500 that is paid once throughout ur stay as a student in d university is d only fee that is nt on d portal.

At ur leisure time, read through previous years thread, then u will see candidates that were admitted without knowing anybody except God, same situation will repeat itself this year and u can be among those that will give testimony whenever is list is out, only if u believe.

Also, u can't expect d university nt to admit rems student that passed both utme and rems exam just because he/she failed putme, so if u re admitted dnt be surprised when u see ur mates with lesser scores in putme.

Also, i dnt think u re expecting all d students admitted in a dept to be d top scorers in d putme, it's nt done because admission has different criteria.

Keep ur anger nw and be focus.
That was pretty argumentative and defensive. Would it be presumptuous of me if I duplicate your style of textually diagnosing me to be frustrated? If you don't mind, I in turn infer from your post that you are being emotionally sentimental. I said this not to disprove your well thought out arguments, but to extol your unshaken loyalty TO THE BETTER FAR. May Unilorin never desert you when you need it most.
Oh yes, most of what I know about Unilorin I learnt from this informative forum. And from previous Nairalanders' posts we were made to understand that there is nothing like merit list in Unilorin. And some of your colleagues attested to this. What about this vindication-like post by @Delaw3 "Admission PARO has started fully, be smart---" What does admission PARO mean? Who are the people championing this PARONIC absurdity? Could it be the Balogun of Gambari or the Balogun of Ajikobi? Or could it be the Iya Loja of Sanngo or the Head of Tanke? No, I don't think any of these personalities can create PARONICISM and sustain it without being aided by the academics.
I beg to differ when you angrily labelled me frustration patient. But the truth is I hardly get frustrated. I wish you knew me in person. Perhaps am beginning to sound annoying to you, because ordinarily, you wouldn't have asked me to keep my anger and stay focus sarcastically.
I implore you to pardon my misgivings and forgive me in any way I may have gotten under your skin. Please do not send me to conventry over this debatable gaffe of mine for this is not enough to take up the cudgel.

In the panoply of matters, the turn of the unfolding events as regards unilorin, has set trepidation in the hearts of the prospective candidates. Frustration and desperation are beginning to gradually erode the shrewdness and the gifted sense of judgement of the admission seekers. Hence, the psychologically befuddled acceptance of the connection apprehension.
The deliberate obfuscation of admission process credited to officials of Unilorin is a wake-up call to all of us that when illegality and undue obscurity are condoned overtime, they tend to attain societal acceptance with a high level of alacrity.
As a matter of fact, I am yet to recover from the panic-stricken I received on Tuesday when a family member decided to tow the line on my behalf. To avoid being branded supercilious and gullible, I relunctantly handed over my Jamb/Post Utme documents to him. And He proceeded to formalize an unholy alliance with an official of Unilorin, specifically a woman, whose phone number is now in my possession which am afraid, will not be shared on this forum as this will be tantamount to privacy compromise without Her permission. To His utter dismay, He was disappointedly told that given my Post Utme score my admission is guaranteed, but it is a function of a clause. And what is this rather unfortunate clause? A sum of #40,000!!!! As you might have correctly guessed, I honestly told my uncle that if "Merit Equation" is obviated from my admission success, then probably, this is not my year of gaining admission into the university.
Interestingly, my uncle texted me Her number and without hesitation I called Her to hear from the horse's mouth, but to my utter consternation She told me that She is just an underling to the fellow that would stamp my admission, and the money in totality goes to the OGA in charge of the arranged admission. Out of pure conscience and sheer honesty, I frankly told Her that i can't afford the astronomical sum of money that she and her crony are demanding for, when the underlying factors that will determine my admission are all greek to me. Her subsequent statements further knocked me off course, when she confidently said there was nothing they could do, and besides, admission nowadays is down to money. And funny enough she was saying all these at a market location as it was being confirmed by Her and the noisy background. But I have had more than I expected from Her, so I prudently decided to bid Her goodluck in Her mouth-watering expediton. Quite frankly that was pathetic. How could money be the sine qua non for admission rather than merit?
Fellow admission seekers, the proverbial connection is real indeed, considering my encounter with the aforementioned woman. But what can we do to forestall what seems ironically to be normal to these officials of the great citadel of learning? I think it is about time the staus quo was upset for the providential wind of change is imminent.
Prior to this time, I had always held Unilorin in great reverence, but things have started falling apart at speed of light and the centre can no longer be held. At this moment in time, there is a prevalent mismatch between the school's principles and the actions of the officials. They see the prospective candidates as mere commmodities to be cashed upon to fulfil their avariciously sordid wealth acquisition. No wonder, they don't embark on strike because they know that what they get from prospective candidates is enough to neutralize the erratic emolument they get from the Government. So they are not the saints they pretend to be, they are just mendaciously parading themselves to be sui generis. Why, my dearest officials of Unilorin?
Evidently, come september, if there are glaring indications that those that have less scores than we, are granted admission via CONNECTION ROUTE other than MERIT ROUTE, then we shall collectively petition the school's Governing Council. And if favourable response is not given to our collective petition, then publication of an OPEN LETTER in conjuction with a highly reputable national newspaper shall be our final recourse. Let there be a body of evidence that supports this modest proposal, if there is no modicum of transparency in this year's admission exercise, so that they would not be able to gainsay our disinterested claims by the time their irregularities are being published.
My apology in advance to the past and current students of Unilorin. The obverse of aided admission is half-baked graduates. Only GOD knows the number of students who are full of potentials and innovation that have been ignorantly denied admission as a result of greed. It is a common knowledge that when the desirable is unavailable then the available becomes desirable. In essence, when over-qualified candidates are rejected then the average ones are absorbed into the programme. So with that, average performances become inevitable. This is not an indirect way of labelling Unilorin alumni as mentally incapacitated graduates. In fact, am very much aware of the oddity of my remark and this has engulfed me in penitential mood.Perhaps I shouldn't have raised this point, but Providence knows best. Please accept my penitence.

rkarang: Hmmmm.... I don't know much but all I know is that you'll be admitted by God's grace.
Besides, why Mathematics?
The only thing growing faster than the sticker price on a college education may be the debate around the value of one- particular if a student majors in something with no obvious pathway to a decent job.
In January, President Barack Obama inadvertently caused a bit of an uproar when he questioned the value of a degree in art history while he was talking about better aligning job-training programmes with empolyer's needs. Mr Obama later sent a handwritten apology note to a unversity of Texas art historian who took offense at the remark.
Apologies aside, the question of what a student should major in and what sort of return on investment it can generate is becoming an increasingly important question, as families struggle to pay for school fee.
As the economic value of education increases, we will need to remember that education, especially higher education, is about more than Naira and Kobo. It should do more than provide foot soldiers for the Nigerian economy. Educators in both secondary and postsecondary institutions have cultural and political missions to ensure that there is an educated citizenry that can continue to defend and promote our democratic ideals.
Incentivizing routes to specific fields is very challenging indeed-especially given the volatility in the economy. Hot fields come and go, but careers are life choices, not stock picks. We certainly need more scientists, engineers and mathematicians, but we also need college graduates who are willing to work in important fields (like education or social work) that don't pay as well, but also may be highly rewarding.
It takes much more than a major to get a great education. Rather, students should look for a college or university that has organized its educational programmes, curriculum and co-curriculum-to help students build big-picture knowledge of the world around them; develop high-level skills they will need for careers, civil society and their own lives; acquire real-world practice and experience; and above all, to find their own sense of purpose and vocation in the largest sense of that term.
AMEN....and to your dispassionate question, WHY MATHEMATICS? Have you heard of STEM programme? Besides, I am such an ambitious fellow with revolutionary ideas. Opting for mathematics as first degree will serve as the springboard on which an impeccable foundation will be secured as regard the achievement of the ultimate goals I have set for myself. Of course, the economic reality of the nation is well taken into consideration that there is hardly a high paying job for mathematics majors besides teaching. But I realized that virtually everything in Nigeria is under utilized. Honestly, I am not going to the university to be trained to become a sought-after fellow by employers by amassing good grades, but rather, to acquire real education via a properly trained mind. For real education transcends good grades and when the chips are down only properly trained mind can come to one's rescue. Although good grades should be seen as necessary steps to get promoted to the next academic level. So don't misinterpret my views of good grade backlash.
In today's information-overloaded world, the modern citizen is routinely confronted by a maze of numbers and data of various forms. To be able to make sense of out of this, an increased knowledge of mathematics is at the heart of many of today's advancements in science and technology and are contributing to progress in other fields such as industrial and architectural design, economics, biology, linguistics, and psychology. Study mathematics can provide one with a competitive advantage in many fields. An undergraduate degree in mathematics can also give one a firm foundation for further study in a variety of other disciplines. @rkarang. Please do forgive what some Nairalanders would label lengthy rants and be objective in your critical assessment of my rationale for vying for mathematics.

rkarang: @EINSTEINPG, I sight you O smiley
Am kind of fed up with this connection of a thing. If connection is the ultimate requisite for admission into unilorin then they shouldn't bother conducting post utme, they should just direct prospective candidates to pay certain amount of money into the school's account then those of us that can't afford it would have to seek our luck elsewhere. Next time i hear about their dress code shit am going to sue them for hypocrisy

crowther15: I could See most people were just putting derogatory remark against UNILORIN
some people are meant to favour and some are meant to suffer for it
what wound UNILORIN do When 100 candidates is needed in a department and over 400 qualified for it on merit
the highest cutoff we could have I think is 80% more than triple will always qualified for it
in this case d admission will Be base on random selection and quota allotted to some lecturers and other member of staff
this is happening everywhere in Nigeria
there is formula for e everything number of those people from catchment area and others too
UNILORIN is still better having the highest intake of students
having total number of students around 35000 which sku have this in Nigeria?
mind u having Good score in post ume doesn't guarantee success at d university
So many people that got 80s last yr, no whr to be found now
even those that scored 50s are doing better than them
That is debateable bro.

There is a compelling reason to believe that his appointment could be political compensation. But that doesn't mean he is not completely au fait with the system.

So unilorin toys with candidates' emotions after their TOEFL examinations? If those that scored 70%-80% fail to secure admission on the basis of connection rather than wrong documents combination, then with resounding resolute we shall collectively sue unilorin as an entity. It baffles me when candidates with potential merit scores begin lobbying for admission. Why is the management so particular about dress code when it is crystal clear that bribery is the decisive factor for gaining admission? If the sordid details we've been reading about the school turn out to be true, then the officials of unilorin become the hypocrites of the 21st century.
