Nigerians vote in state elections amid sporadic violence
Nigerians went to the polls Saturday to choose state governors and legislators, with security forces on high alert and violence reported in the oil-rich south of the country.

They searched all vehicles, checking the identity of their occupants.

Polling stations were due to have officiallly closed at 3:00 pm (1400 GMT) but voters already in the queue before then were still being allowed to cast their ballots.

The presidential vote on April 21 is expected to lead to the country's first civilian-to-civilian handover since independence from Britain in 1960.

The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) currently controls 28 states, and a top party official predicted the party would win more this time, including the coveted Lagos State.

In some areas of Rivers State and Delta, people had still not started voting by mid-afternoon.

In Okrika, a fief of the Niger Delta Vigilantes south of Port Harcourt, large numbers of people complained of voting materials being delivered late and of their subsequent confiscation by officials from the ruling party.

At Bodo community in the Ogoni region of Rivers, AFP journalists reported seeing two electoral agents stuffing ballot boxes with pre-stamped papers in favour of the ruling party candidate.

The same officials later turned away a bona fide voter on the grounds they had run out of electoral material.

In Okpe in neighbouring Delta State, an electoral official told AFP he was being forced by PDP members to authenticate hundreds of already thumb-printed ballot papers.

In Warri, another oil town, residents spoke of gangs of youths fighting the military.

In another southern oil state, Bayelsa, officials also reported at least two dead and one wounded in violence in the capital Yenagoa.

Southern Nigeria's oil-producing region has been the theatre of violence, ranging from gang warfare to oil-worker kidnappings, for the past several years.

European Union observers have not deployed to Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta for security reasons and are monitoring the polls there through local observers.

Chief EU observer Dutch lawmaker Max van den Berg, who was in Lagos Saturday, said he had received reports from EU observers of incidents in a number of states across the nation, ranging from under-age voting in northern states to machete-toting individuals in south-eastern Enugu State.

"This is worrisome material," he said, stressing he was waiting however for the polls to close before forming his overall evaluation.

The northern commercial capital of Kano was calm despite a late start to voting.

In another northern State, Katsina, an angry mob burned down a local government secretariat in Dandume town, convinced that the non-arrival of voting materials was an attempt by the ruling party to rig elections, officials said.

While the military manned the roads, police were deployed at polling stations throughout the country.

Lagos was calm and local police chief Bashir Azeez said no arrests had been made so far.

Some Lagos governorship candidates had just their logo, not their photograph on the ballot sheets.

Electoral agency boss Maurice Iwu dismissed this as the fault of the candidates in question who had not submitted photos.

But Yinka Odumakin, spokesman for Jimi Agbaje, one of the leading Lagos governorship candidates, described the non-insertion of the politicians' picture on the ballot paper as an "act of sabotage and a deliberate attempt to reduce his (Agbaje's) chances at the poll". [Quote][/quote][/quote]

I don't agree with you. it would not be right for Nigerians to fold there hands and allow things go worse in the society. As Martin Luther King Jr. would say " Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that Matter."  we need to know that what is wrong is wrong no matter how anyone wants to justify it.  I wonder the kind of example our leaders a showing for there children. and they want to stop crime, the want to stop corruption , they want to stop examination malpractices. While we await results form the election I which to state that what we hear as results in some of the states are not really results. I was really baffled to find out that in Delta state and in some states in the Niger Delta there was no election. Up till about 6pm in most part of Delta state, no polling center was seen. But am surprise to hear that the election was okay. Some so desperate politicians hijacked all the materials took them to there houses and produced result. This is really a mess.

At about 6 pm a man saw me and asked me how was the election. i answered him that there was no election but before i could even answer he said "shey it was peaceful, very peaceful that is what we want" I began to wonder what he was saying" then he told me it's not the Ogada people and market woman that would decided who to win, that it is our people that went to school. That they have used there brine to do everything.  

My questions there is Nigeria progressing or retrogressing? One thing is clear. The election did not hold in many parts of Delta state but they are having results. This is not an issue of which party one supports but let justice and respect for individuals right prevail in the land.

Thanks for your contributions on this issue, i quite agree that we need grace to leave to God's Standard. To love him, to love others and even to leave a holy life. and these grace works as a function of knowledge. no wonder Peter told the people in 2 Pet. 1:2 that Grace and peace be multiply unto you through the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

The Wisdom we are talking about now in this dispensation is a wisdom that is tight to the knowledge to Jesus (The Truth.). His life and His principle and the application of this truth in our lives. Weather as a Doctor, an Engineer , a lawyer, or what ever you are.

My dearest desire is to be able to leave by God's standard, and this can only be when I have the right knowledge to know what to do and what not to do through the direction of His Spirit in my inner man.

Solomon had a wisdom where he studied nature and could understand the way this should go. but for us now we have the Word of God and the Holy Spirit in us, to help us understand how things should be. So if one would say God let my Understanding be enlightened to know your Will clearly and leave by it. That is what I see as Wisdom.

If God ask you to make a wish, what would you ask for?

As I read this story in the scripture I was faced with the question to myself, If God appears to me now and ask me to make a Wish of one thing, what is that one thing I would ask. I know I have so many things I really desire and would want to have now in life but how do I make this choice?

Solomon made a choice that gave him more than he could ever expect. This shows that there could be just one thing that I can ask for and every other thing would follow suit. Solomon asked for wisdom- 1 Kings 3: 6: So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?" . In that wisdom he got many things he needed.

Wisdom is very important of all and remember, Jesus is the wisdom of God. This is not a 419 kind of wisdom or ability to trick others. But a wisdom that brings Victory, integrity. Respect, love and peace.

What would you ask for?

This is just PTDF fund we are hearing about we don't know how they are using others like NDDC fund, excess oil cash and others. It is quite clear our leaders are leading for themself. some governors are even using state fund now to sponsor elections when  people are suffering,  i mean really suffering. if you have time to go to some of the villages in Nigeria you will see people really suffering with no go means of livelihood except there farm work. and in most case they make very little from the farm just to feed. no electricity, no good water, no good school for their children. I wonder why.

This is a country were leader use moillions that are suppose to benefit others to fullfill there own personal desire. and please

We still need to pray more because whatever is happening now I believe would lead to the liberation of Nigerians from bad leadership. May God help this country.

hi Ejarune this is a welcome develoment since Nigeria is an oil producing country ,i think we really need to come together and exchange ideas and ways to improve our expertiseas regards to the local content stuff.
However ,i am a Production engineer and i have experionec in drilling workover and completions and i really need a drilling job,even if it is a roghneck or roustabout job,i don't really mind.contract or permanent.

Jesus said His sheep will know His voice and a stranger's voice they will not follow. That is a promise of God to you today. You see, the Spirit of God will never guide you in opposition to the written Word of God (John 16:13). So, if you're not familiar with what the Word says, you'll find it more difficult to discern His leading.

Get familiar with God's voice by meditating and studying the Word of God. Follow God's instruction to Joshua and meditate on it day and night. Act on what you find in the Word, not just when it's easy but every time. Be obedient even in the slightest things.

That continual obedience to the written Word will bring you into maturity and tune your inward ear to the voice of the Spirit. You'll soon be able to recognize it as easily as you recognize the voice of your dearest friend.

So, instead of wondering about it, start expecting to hear from Him.

Then start sharpening your spiritual ears by spending time in the Word

Not being a graduate does not mean  you would not do well. But the issue am trying to bring out is that there is a standard we all wish to see Nigeria attain and In my Opinion if we have a graduate not necessary yar'adua or any one contesting now. but having a graduate would really be a plus to Nigeria.

I no gree, those that have impacted and changed things in the country were no graduates, i stand 2 b corrected, bt i don't think marwa is a graduate, n he did very well when he was d military governor of lagos state,

so, in Nigeria, it goes beyond just being a graduate to perform effectively, nothing wrong with millionnaires who don't feel d need to go 2 skol not because they can afford it, dey just feel no need for it,

Marwa did well as a Governor in Lagos state but If he were to be a graduate it would have helped him to do more. Believe it or not, if Obasanjor were to be a graduate it would have been a plus to his government. Education (Acquisition of Knowladge) is a very strong tool for leadership.

Having a graduate as a president would really do well for Nigeria. Come to thing of it. A man that does not value his Educational development is a man that despises Knowledge. We have so many rich men in Nigeria who do not have value for knowledge and that is how the see life. they think is all about making money. Many of them had the Chance to further there education but they see it as not necessary because they have money. I don't think it would be wise to have such people again as president in this country because they would lack the wisdom to develop our educational sector which is the foundation for the future of this country. Moreover they would lack the wisdom to initiate creative ideas that would develop other sectors of the Economy. like health, Agriculture, transportation, tourism and many other .

When you look at the educational background of someone like Donald Duke you would agree with me. i am not trying to campage for yar'adua but just sharing my opinion on having a graduate as a president.

Their mannerisms will rub off on you. You can't help it. They just influence you, especially if they are people you respect and admire.

Sorry am not a staff of NLNG. i did not make it after the interview. As for the test for Engineering graduate trainee. they look for speed and accuracy. during my time the questions where not difficult but you ability to think fast and answer them matters  50 question in say 12-15Mins.As an Engineering graduate the test were up to 5 sections Maths, English, Mechanical reasoning, and two other sections i can't really remember now.

One common question asked during the interview was that if your colleague is not measuring up in a job you are doing what would you do? they also ask questions like tell us about yourself?, questions on industrial safety for engineers, and on any previous experience you claim to have gotten that is reflected on your CV. Your CV is in most cases a guide for them in asking you questions

Some people have very low expectations of what God will provide for them materially. They trust Him to feed and clothe them, but they don't trust Him to feed and clothe them very well!

Somehow they've gotten the idea that God's an old miser who will do little more than put rags on their backs and beans on their tables. But that's not what Jesus told us. He said in Matthew 6 that God would clothe us better than He clothed Solomon. That one statement alone proves that God wants to do more than just meet our basic needs. He wants to bless us abundantly.

First Timothy 6:17 says, "He giveth us richly all things to enjoy." God is a loving Father. He gets great pleasure from blessing His children. What a love. no wonder John asked " What a manner of love the father has bestowed on us that we should be called the sons of God. The love of God can not be compared to anthing on earth. Men only perish not because they sin but only because they rerefuseo embrace the love of God.

We only prove that we love God when we accept His love by accepting His Son Jesus Christ into our lives.Take a bold step today and be born again. For God loves you and his love can not be compare to any thing in the world.He is only waiting for you to take that bold step. Remain Blessed.

Your definition is correct but joy from this context as stated in my post above is more than just being happy. or being, delighted it is a force that strengthens every part of you Body, Spirit and soul. We know in the scripture quoted “the Joy of the Lord is my straight" this makes us to understand that Joy is Strength, and the Joy of the Lord is a product of revelation that ignites an understanding and brings joy (Strength) to your entire being.

This is one thing that makes Christians different from every other kind of being. This is because righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost are products of being in the kingdom of God. We have an assurance that no matter what happens we have this peace the world can not comprehend, we have Joy unspeakable. That means u can not define it using the best kind of dictionary.

This Joy is not by how much you have or how much mistakes you have made but how much of God's glory you are going to experience both in this world and the world beyond. it would only take you to have deeper Knowledge of God's word to grow in this joy.

Joy is not just a state of mind. It is not a fleeting emotion. Joy is a very real force, and the devil doesn't have anything that can stand up against it. Just as fear has to yield to faith, discouragement has to yield to joy.

Whatever circumstances you are facing today, you can be full of joy. You can be strong in the Lord. You can draw on the supply of the Holy Spirit within you and come out on top.

some comments in this forum really makes me laugh, the fact is that no body with his real senses would support what the millantants are doing when you look at the embarrassment it's causing to the nation. some of us are privileged to have a job and meet most of our daily needs that is why we can reason well. but what do you expect from someone that struggle to go to school graduated and and does not have a job to feed. what would you expect from someone who grows up knowing his community is blessed with oil which feeds the whole nation and still can not have the basic needs of life. what would you expect from someone who has been denied the basic education in life because there is no good primary school in his community. the list is much. All this are a products of the seed our leader have sow. they have planted it ,it has grow up and this is the harvest. please don.t get me wrong am not happy with what i see but it is also a fact that what we see is a product of what was sow.

If you are not privilege to have what you have now ( Staying abroad, a good education and job) i tell u some of you would be doing likewish especially when you know it is your right to this things

It is good to be a Christian i mean a real Christian because it would help to order your actions to bring fair play, justice and the rule of law. but apart from that we need a leader that is creative and has a vision. if you have a leader that is not creative with a good understanding of the nation and it's people then you would get  a worse government than what we have now.

Lets face the reality. These millitants are not fighting for the development of their area rather fighting for the development of their own pockets.l don't support their actions because it can result to untimely war in this country. Kidnapping foreigners is never the solution rather it creates room for trouble.

If you had bothered to read further you would have seen where I distinguished between pre and post marital sex as fornication and I agreed that pre marital sex in some instance is in fact fornication if it is ILLICIT sex.  I further went on to define what illicit sex is according to the Strong's Bible
