August 30, 2012 | 12:35 am News By EVELYN USMAN LAGOS— Robbers attacked a bullion van and killed a police inspector who was part of the team of policemen escorting the money to a bank in Lagos, yesterday. The policemen were said to be escorting staff of a plastic- making company with an undisclosed sum of money around Ajao when the armed robbers opened fire thereby killing the inspector. It was learnt that although the inspector was killed, the policemen were able to foil the robbery as the culprits were said to have sustained bullet wounds. The Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone, adding that efforts were being made to arrest the culprits. She said: “The policemen were on duty and were escorting the plastic company workers to the bank with the money when they were attacked somewhere between Aswani and Ajao Estate. “Armed robbers laid ambush and killed a police inspector but the robbery was foiled as the armed robbers were also shot but managed to escape. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/08/robbers-attack-bullion-van-kill-police-inspector/ |

I was never in support of killing people. My point is that we should not condem our country for what happened in other lands. Self destruction kills much faster. We should not blame government for our children's bad behaviour too. May the soul of the dead rest in peace. |
Imanuelle: Chei... May dey RIP.unpatrotic Nigerian. Poorly constructed airport in Ghana, we blame our country. Mantainance engineer neglect his duties, we blame FGN. Pilot failed to handle difficult situations, we take the blame from him. May God help us. |

April 1, 2012 | 1:00 am News By TONY EDIKE 42 years after the Nigerian civil war ended, a bomb, believed to have been dropped during the period, exploded in Enugu, the capital of Enugu State. There were, however, no casualties, the police said. The war, which saw the south-east attempting to break away from the Nigerian federation under the name, Biafra, started in 1967 and ended in 1970. The bomb exploded on Friday, in the rice mill section of Oye Market in Awgu Local Government Area of the state at about 2.50 p.m. (1450 hours). Although the source of the bomb could not be immediately ascertained, experts said it could be one of the unexploded bombs dropped during the war. Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the blast, said the command had commenced full scale investigations into the incident. ”We have commenced full scale investigations into the blast suspected to be that of the unexploded ordinance that was used and abandoned during the civil war. ”The incident allegedly occurred at about 1450hrs of 30/03/12 at rice mill part of Oye Market of Awgu in Enugu State of Nigeria. No casualty was reported as there was no loss of life or property,” the police spokesman said. According to the PPRO, men of the anti-bomb squad of the command picked the remnant of the suspected unexploded ordinance for necessary analysis. Amaraizu recalled the sensitization campaign earlier carried out by the command in conjunction with the media over the devastating effect of the unexploded ordinances and advised the people not to tamper with them any time they come across such explosives in their farms or any other area affected by the civil war. The command, however, assured the people of the state of “maximum safety.” The Humanitarian De-miners from the Ministry of Defence, Abuja had, in 2010, carried out scanning of the areas ravaged by the civil war in South Eastern Nigeria and recovered several bombs and other explosives which were later destroyed. Mr. Bala Yakubu, the leader of the group, disclosed that several bombs, including conventional and locally made landmines used during the civil war, were still posing serious danger in the war affected areas. Only last year, a sophisticated bomb was recovered from a building site belonging to an Anglican Church along One Day Road, Enugu by operatives of the state police bomb squad. www.vanguardngr.com/2012/04/42-years-after-civil-war-bomb-explodes-in-enugu/ |

NCC boss urges control of Internet content DR. Eugene Juwa, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has advocated the control of content that appears on the internet. Juwah spoke with newsmen in Geneva, Switzerland, where he is attending the 2011 Expo of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). “There has to be some measure of control on content in a volatile political situation where messages, anonymous messages, are coming through internet and exacerbating this volatile situation; it cannot be allowed.’’ Juwah, who spoke against the backdrop of recent events in North Africa, said that regardless of who was in charge, it was necessary to have an authority in charge of the content of the internet. “We must find a way to regulate it; whether it is left to the regulators to do or to government, or to the service providers to do – it has to be worked out, but there has to be control of content.’’ Juwah also spoke on the quality of the services which the GSM companies were rendering Nigerians, saying that only substantial investments could improve the situation. He said that although the networks were investing in improvement, they were still being hampered by legal requirements, especially on issues bordering on the environment. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Tuesday, said it had informed the family and lawyers of detained ace comedian, Mr. Babatunde Omidina (Baba Suwe), of their readiness to release him to them for an independent scan to bring the matter to a conclusive end. Confirming the development to Vanguard, Airport Commander of the agency, Mr. Hamza Umar, said the agency made this position known to the family members and his lawyers when they visited their office on Monday. He also said they were told to take him to any independent scan examination of their choice under the watchful eyes of the agency, assuring that they were prepared to release the actor should the independent scan say otherwise. However, Vanguard gathered that 72 hours after this assurance was reportedly given, neither the family nor the lawyers had returned to the agency to inform it of their decision. Umar said the agency was ready and anxious to collaborate with the family and lawyers to bring the matter to a close. Baba Suwe, who has been in the custody of NDLEA since October 12, over alleged possession of cocaine, was said to have made a series of excretions but no drug has been found on them. The NDLEA said the actor will continue to be under their observation. Baba Suwe was nabbed aboard an Air France aircraft to Paris at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Ikeja, Lagos, about 10p.m. on Wednesday, October 12 when he allegedly tested positive to drug ingestion and had been placed under observation since then. Baba Suwe had on Monday asked a Federal High Court in Lagos, presided over by Justice Okechukwu Okeke, to vacate an order he gave, which empowered NDLEA to detain him for additional 15 days. The request formed part of a motion on notice he brought, pursuant to Order 26 Rule 11 of the Federal High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules, 2009. The artiste, while asking for an order of the court discharging or vacating the order issued by Justice Okeke, argued that the application for the order obtained by NDLEA was grossly irregular and constituted an abuse of the processes of the court. In the motion filed by his counsel, Bamidele Aturu, Baba Suwe also argued that the application for the order obtained by the respondent was contrary to public policy and constituted a wanton violation of his fundamental rights. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/10/ndlea-to-release-baba-suwe-to-family-lawyers-for-independent-scan/ |
