PoliticsBillards Clash Leads To 4 Deaths And Burning Of 5 Mosques And 50 Homes by EKONGKING(op): 1:37am On Jan 28, 2011
Sectarian clashes in Nigeria sparked by a dispute over a game of billiards have left four people dead and dozens of buildings on fire, police say.

The trouble broke out in Tafawa Balewa in central Nigeria, a region that has seen an upsurge in violence between Christians and Muslims
Five mosques and about 50 homes were set alight as Christian and Muslim youths fought each other.

Police eventually restored order, using roadblocks to contain the violence.

Police commissioner Abdulkadir Mohammed Indabawa said the dispute began on Wednesday night with a disagreement over money between the Christian owner of the billiards table and a Muslim player.

Although the row was settled through mediation by local elders, the table was later burned.

"The Christian youths accused Muslims of the act, which prompted them to go about burning houses and mosques," said Mr Indabawa.

"Clashes followed between Muslim and Christian groups and four people were killed as a result."

Volatile region

Paramilitary police were patrolling the city's streets on Thursday and Mr Indabawa said troops could also join the crackdown.

"We have mounted roadblocks at areas leading to the town to avoid a spillover of the crisis to other areas," he said.

Tafawa Balewa is close to the city of Jos in Nigeria's volatile Middle Belt, which sits between the mainly Muslim north and largely Christian south.

The region has been a flashpoint of tension between Hausa Muslims and Berom Christians.

It has suffered repeated outbreaks of ethnic violence over the past decade, with deadly riots in 2001, 2008 and last year.

Kalu Akanu:
You cannot actually compare Nigeria with India. Even though India is ethnically diverse as Nigeria, many of India's ethnic groups have a shared history. And not only that, they have a shared religion through Hinduism. Even though some Indians are Muslims and Buddhist. This shared history and religion has allowed the Indian people to have a pluralistic democracy, that still has a corruption, but their democracy is very free.

Nigeria is very different. We do not have a shared history. Our shared history is only through colonialism and the 50 years after colonialism. In addition, we do not have a shared religion either, which is also the bane of our problems as well. Tribalism is rampant in Nigeria, and people only care about their own ethnic groups. I would go even farther to say that a lot of people only care about themselves. This is the sad truth.

Our founding fathers failed to establish a nationalistic Nigerian identity. Herbert Macaulay tried, God rest his soul, followed by, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, but other leaders failed to listen to them. The failures of this generation has set Nigeria up to fail.
You are spot on we have no shared culture, religion, history .We exist as one country because some british lords decided it and same goes for many african countries.
Regarding India you are right, Eventhough there are ethnically diverse they have a shared culture, religion from atleast 3000 years. All religions in india hindus ,muslim, christian practice caste system

Nigeria-Education: Nation, Pakistan to partner on education
News - Africa news .Education-Nigeria-Pakistan - Members of the group of eight developing nations (D8), Nigeria and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan are on the verge of signing a memorandum of understanding to improve the education sector of Nigeria. The High Commissioner of Pakistan in Nigeria, Rtd Major General Asif Duraiz Akhtar disclosed this yesterday in Abuja during an interview with journalists in his office.

He said plans for the signing of the agreement are under way as well as other bilateral agreements for productive collaboration between both countries. He said already, there is an agreement between the two countries in the area of defence, adding that Nigeria's minister of defence was in Pakistan to conclude the pact.

'The process of signing a memorandum of understanding on education is ongoing as both countries are ready to support each other politically and internationally to have a well developed and stable society,' he added.

The education pact, according to him, will depend on areas of interest to Nigeria saying that Pakistan has a standard education sector having trained students from all over the world.

He said the instability in the country has made some Pakistani lecturers return to their country but promised to assist Nigeria once the agreement is signed. shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked

While condemning the new trend of bomb blasts in the country, the commissioner pointed out that terrorism is now everywhere but only with new faces and names. He said Pakistan is ready to help curb it with their wealth of knowledge and experience. grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

If the government is unable to spend money atleast it has to create a suitable environment for private players to develop infrastructure . That what fashiola is doing and and it is sadly lacking in case of federal government.

Infra spending to reach Rs 41,00,000 cr in 12th Plan

Press Trust of India / New Delhi March 23, 2010, 10:34 IST

India will need an investment of over one trillion dollars shocked shocked (about Rs 40.99 lakh crore) for infrastructure development in the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17), twice the amount that is likely to be achieved in the current plan.

"A preliminary assessment suggests that investment in infrastructure during the 12th Plan would need to be of the order of about Rs 40.99 lakh crore ($1,025 billion) to achieve a share of 9.95 per cent as a proportion of GDP," Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said in a report on Investment in Infrastructure.

Yesterday, the Planning Commission had said investment in the infrastructure sector in the Eleventh Five Year Plan (2007-12) will be close to the target of $500 billion, undecided undecided thanks to a better-than-expected show by the telecom sector.

The Commission had set a $500 billion target of investment in the infrastructure sector during the Eleventh Plan Period.

Following the global crisis, the growth rate during 2008-09 slipped to 6.7 per cent from over nine per cent in the preceding three years. It is estimated to be 8.2 this year

i will add infrastructure spending of other countries in a while, if others are having data please add it then we will know how far back we have fallen in world

PoliticsPresident Told To Cut Government Costs For Survival Of Nation by EKONGKING(op): 4:22pm On Jan 21, 2011
Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan has been told by a key advisory panel to cut government's running costs.

The chair of the Presidential Advisory Council, Theophilus Danjuma, said ministries should be cut or merged to free money for development schemes
The budget proposed for 2011 shows Nigeria would spend far more on the government than on infrastructure.

Nigeria is Africa's leading oil producer, but the majority of its 150 million people still live in poverty.

Parliamentarians' salaries are not made public in Nigeria, but diplomats say the country's politicians are among the best paid in the world. grin grin

The BBC's Bashir Abdullahi in the capital, Abuja, says Mr Danjuma, a retired general and former defence minister, was appointed by Mr Jonathan and is a highly respected figure.

Mr Danjuma said that he realised the "far-reaching recommendations" made by the panel came on the eve of April's elections.

"However we think also this is the right time we raise these issues," Nigeria's Daily Trust paper quotes him as saying.

He said the president had promised feedback on the suggestions.

Debt payments: $3.5bn
Other expenses: $2.6bn

CAPITAL EXPENDITURE: $6.5bn
"If necessary, we shall be involved in finding remedies to all the issues that we have raised," he said, the Nation newspaper reports.

Mr Jonathan, who last week won the ruling party's ticket to run for president, thanked the panel for its report and said its recommendations would be taken seriously.

"You can't provide education, health or security without resources generated from a robust economy," he said.

The finance minister has set up a committee to review the government's running costs, and has said cuts have already by made, Reuters news agency reports.

The president's proposal for this year's national budget, which is currently before parliament, shows that nearly 75%   shocked shocked of the $27.6bn (£17bn) would be spent on running government and its agencies.

Only $6.5bn is proposed for spending on capital projects, such as investment in vital infrastructure.

Mr Jonathan's main opponents for the presidency in April will be former anti-corruption campaigner Nuhu Ribadu and Gen Muhammadu Buhari.

Even somebody like my self who has no finance background would be wary of this bond thing.

Before obj left we had the following

Reserves - 50billion

Excess crude account - 20 or 30 billion

In the aftermath of yAR/geJ adminstration

We now have -

R - 30bill

eca - 400million

THe question is where did all this money one go in four years - and how can we justify borrowing a measly $500 million

when we can take the 500 Million from the reserve.

I repeat a government of GEJ according to the above mismanagement will surely bankrupt Nigeria.

The current violence in Nigeria is only going to escalate further and lead into full blown civil war unless Sovereign National Conference is constituted
For people who believe the current violence is linked to 2011 elections and are stoked by politicians and will come down after elections I have bad news to you  cool .politicians are adding fuel to fire but fire is still there with or without politicians and fire will consume the nation.
There are 4 important reasons for this
1, Huge increase in population are putting pressure on scare land resources leading to conflict this problem is only likely to grow in coming years as Sahara desert is advancing towards nigeria and fulani herdsmen will move south for grazing land bringing them in conflict with farmers
2,Uncontrolled migration from chand, niger, etc into the country leading to competition for jobs and scares resources
3,you cannot have one part which is focussed on development and another foccused on quranic education and begging to survive
4,There is no sane country in world which have two different legal system in a same country and then still expect people to live in unity
