A gathering of delusional fellows. The sooner they realize that Nigeria is doomed to failure, the better. |
Well, there are certain rules we are supposed to follow when screwing around with math. Process from left to right, certain operations have equal precedence. Anyway, even ignoring those conventions, given the context we are in (we have some hypotenuse and are talking about the lengths of the other sides, which by definition must be shorter), I figured that it would be pretty clear that 4/5x means, "take four fifths of x", not "take 4, then divide it by 5x." Also, if we follow the rules, then 4/5x, regardless of the value of x is the same as 0.8 * x. Like I said, multiplication and division have equal precedence. So the divide operation must come first, before the multiply (since it is to the left of the multiply.) The nice thing about these rules is that they mean we don't have to tack on extra parentheses and stuff. Imagine how annoying and wasteful it would be if we had even 10 different variables and had to tack on 2 parentheses for each variable...it starts to get very unwieldy very fast. |
One other thing, for some reason the logout button doesn't work for me. It seems I remain logged in no matter what I do? |
Finally if you guys aren't already writing tests for your code, please do so ![]() I know it is cheaper to just test your bugs on us, but you have no way of knowing that each time you "fix" one bug it doesn't cause another unless you write tests. |
Also, any sort of count variables should be cached. E.g. if you need to report how many posts are in a thread, cache this using some variable rather than computing it from scratch every time you get a request. |
For performance, just make heavy heavy use of database indexing. Index everything that needs to run fast, basically... |
Almost any link I click when trying to review my "recent" threads leads to an "unexpected error blahblahblah" bug. |
FACE: Check that answer in bold again. How did y end up a denominator ?y is not on the denominator. 4/5x = 4 times 1/5 times x. Multiplication and division have equal precedence in algebra, and by convention we process from left to right. If I wanted it on the denominator, I'd have written 4/(5x) or 4/(5*x) |

If you are the last person to respond to a thread you are following, then it probably shouldn't bubble to the top of the "followed list." This seems like a bug... |
Math is one of those things where the applications are sometimes not immediately obvious. But it still really pays off to get good at it/comfortable with it. |
That isn't a very good answer. It is fine to say that every country is lacking one thing or another. But you cannot use this as reason to ignore the fact that you lack something very basic (electricity), or understate how damaging this is. |
igbo2011 seems like a swell, idealistic sort of dude. I wonder what the over/under is until he is corrupted by Nairaland. 3 months? |
I am happy that this Junaid Mohammed said what he said. Rather than allowing the Jarus's of the world to maintain ambiguity and not commit to any position, it forces them to pick a side and stand by it. The closer we get to the inevitable breakup of this country, you may be surprised at how small the north actually is. Hehehehe |
Eko Ile: These useless people and their crooked 419 ways sha.Well I didn't expect the OP to outright lie. You expect in a political forum basic honestly. But obviously that is too much to ask for from people like the OP. |
The facts used in this problem are: 1) Whenever two triangles share 2 angles, they are similar. 2) properties of 3-4-5 triangles. 3) using similarity to reason about which face is longer in some triangle you know less about. Probably what whoever assigned you the problem wanted you to get out of it. |
Then at this point, given that we know that: 1. AB is of length 3X 2. BD is of length 4X 3. The angle at B is 90 degrees then we immediately know that 4. AD must be of length 5x (just the 3-4-5 triangle identity for right triangles like ADB). Examine the triangle CND. Notice that it is a right triangle (the angle at N is 90 degrees), and must be similar to ADB because both triangles share the angle at D (ADB has a 90 degree angle, an angle(D) degree angle, and so does CND. Sharing 2 angles means you share all 3, and so by definition the two triangles are similar.) So that takes care of the first result (proving that CND is similar to ABD.) To find CN and AN, we again use the fact that we have a 3,4,5 triangle. We know that the length of CD is 4x-y. This is the longest face of the triangle CND, since it is opposite the largest angle. So using the fact that we have a 3,4,5 triangle, the other two faces must be of length: a. 4/5 * (4x-y) b. 3/5 * (4x-y) Which is which? Which side (CN versus ND) is longer? Well, in triangle ABD, the face AB is shorter. By similarity, then the face CN must be shorter. So a. length(CN) = 3/5 * (4x-y) b. length(ND) = 4/5 * (4x-y) So we've found CN. Now we need to find AN. Well length(AN) = length(AD)-length(ND) = 5x - 4/5*(4x-y) = 9/5x + 4/5y. |
Looks like no preview button anymore also? |
I don't like this new light background. Any way we can have the option of a dark one too? The color scheme in general is really bad. . . |
OP is very dishonest. No wonder he didn't provide a link to the article: http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/component/content/article/140-the-friday-edition/37300-north-is-ungrateful-south-south The northern part of this country does not contribute anything to the national purse. If the area that produces the resources has just a token of 13 percent, the remaining 87 percent is free gift to the entire nation, particularly the North that has nothing to show for its existence. At the Political Reform Conference in 2005, we went to the Federal Ministry of Finance to get figures and facts about what each of the zones contributed to the commonwealth. What we saw was amazing; the North-West brings nothing, the same with the North-Central and North-East. The South-East and South-West brings minor but the South-South contributes 91 percent. |
I wish he had been more specific about what the breakdown looks like. If you think about the amount of waste there is at the federal level, then this ~9% we contribute is more than enough to run a country with. |
What is Nigeria's annual federal revenue anyways? $20 or 30 billion? If we cannot take our $2 or $3 billion and with full control over taxation raise this to substantially more, then we are fools. $3 billion/year is more than enough to start with. Aggressively cut down costs while increasing revenue and you'll be in great shape. |
Let there be true federalism. This <9% which we contribute to the federal coffers, let us have full control over it, even it means losing oil derivation. So long as we have that and the ability to set taxes internally, we'll be fine. |
Let the Emir remain. Doesn't make much sense tactically to rock the boat too much, unnecessarily create turmoil. It isn't that big a deal. . . they've had one for 200 years now, no need to be disruptive. It is dumb for outsiders to try to sack a town's traditional ruler. . . |
http://www.economist.com/node/21549956 In an alternate universe, it would be countries like Nigeria taking advantage of the higher costs of labor in China to gain market share. Alas, we live in this one, where Nigeria doesn't even have electricity, talk less of manufacturing ![]() |
