DK. Why are you letting people bait you? We know what is going to happen, how people will vote. Which groups of southern Nigerians would ever vote to be in the same country as the SE? The SS minorities are not idiots. For them their first choice will be a republic of their own. |
As long as all of these decisions are the result of UN-supervised referendums, I'm fine. Let's assume temporarily that the Igbos and SS vote in such a referendum to form a country. If Edo votes en masse for it, who can deny them? The voice of the people is the voice of God, as they say. It is up to them to decide. My own success and the success of my people is not dependent on what Edo State decides to do. |
Katsumoto:I stand corrected. Still, hopefully the point stands. Secular constitution, freedom of religion, a better designed FG, etc.
wha?? I cant believe that you pegged the number at 20%. Your numbers are usually in the 70% and above of host territory. What happened?
One of the few times I have literally laughed out loud on NL ![]() |
Negro_Nts: The only allegiances I have are to successful ideologies. If a practice I have doesn't lead to success and prosperity, I discard it. I hope that we Yoruba can do the same more generally. |
Is Edo State predominately Christian, though? Like I said, I don't think religion or ethnicity has to be an issue. Here are a few ingredients required for a nice country that is not homogeneous: 1. Establish a secular constitution that allows anyone to be Christian, Muslim, Hindu, or even atheist (Wole Soyinka is a pretty prominent Yoruba atheist, and I don't think anyone gives him trouble.) 2. Make the central government as unimposing as possible, have fiscal federalism, establish "home rule" as much as possible. 3. House of Reps, Senate type of structure like in the US that weakens the power of populous states and strengthens the power of less populated ones. Basically if people who think like me are in charge of things, it will be dead easy to design a pretty nice country, despite the diversity. |
He said, “We must embark immediately on sovereign National Conference. While we are the same in our essential humanity, we are different as a people – with different, history, world view, cultural practices and I daresay at different levels of civilisation.Lmao. I kind of wish he hadn't said bolded. As for the rest of his statements, on point. |
Is the governor of Edo State not a Muslim (or one in the past)? Is not a signficant portion of Edo State Muslim? I'm not convinced that Christians and Muslims cannot live together in peace and harmony. It depends on the type of Muslim. Some are devilish and backwards (e.g., Arabs, Hausa, Fulani), but others are progressive and forward-looking. |
Huge play |
Such a brutal turnover |
Superiority? I have not said anything about superiority or tribalism in this thread. I have just found this thread hilarious because the end result was the opposite of the OP's intention. Join me in my laughter ![]() |
Truth be told. . . if Edo doesn't want to have anything to do with them, then we can imagine how other groups in the SS must feel about Igbo ![]() Can another Igbo create a thread asking Urhobo, Isoko and other groups in Delta State how they feel about Igbo? ![]() Idoma, Akwa Ibom, Ijaw and other minority groups who are your neighbors, too. Na wa o On a serious note though, personally I don't care if anyone likes us or not, wants to be with us or not. When Nigeria scatters, the only people I'm 100% sure are in it with us are the 6 current states of the SW. I would be happy if Kwara, parts of Kogi, Edo, and Itsekiri decide to join. But it strictly is not necessary to build a prosperous and happy land. |
alj harem:Cosign. I believe in the right of self-determination for minorities. All of this claiming other people stuff that people like Obiagu1 do is lame. Even Itsekiri, who in my opinion are a Yoruba tribe deserve the right to self-determination. If Nigeria scatters and they prefer to stay in some South South Republic, more power to them. |
I am happy that this thread was started by an Igbo rather than a Yoruba. Notice very well my people what happens when you try to claim another ethnic group too much? These things must be done gently and in a more sophisticated manner than the ham-fisted, ogreish and crude approach of Obiagu1 ![]() |
"what's important though is that, i do not forsee a situation where binis will agree to form a political union with igbos. dont ask me why? they will in my view, prefer to look westward, or join a 'niger delta' country even though that may not be perfect either." They have measured you, found you wanting, and rejected you. The Edo people have spoken ![]() |
So from edo.girl's two posts earlier on this thread:
there's historical connection with binis, but in honesty, today, an average edo can't understand a word of yoruba, and i would agree that the average edo person sees himself as closer in many ways than one, to some1 from warri, sapele, or even asaba than someone from oshogbo. whether you can stretch it further & say an edo person feels close to someone from owerri than a yoruba person, i doubt, but i coould be wrong. ofcourse, there are people in edo state, other than binis, who feel closer to igbos. yoruba language degradation amongst hitherto 'yoruba' folks is edo state is a key factor. not sure if it was ogbemudia or someone wlse who 'banned' the teaching of yoruba language in those parts in the 70s. the result is that only the elderly & those born before that era can speak yoruba. the younger ones now speak the local dialect and pidgin only.

i hasten to add that i'm not an expert in these things, so i could be wrong. what's important though is that, i do not forsee a situation where binis will agree to form a political union with igbos. dont ask me why? they will in my view, prefer to look westward, or join a 'niger delta' country even though that may not be perfect either.
She mentioned that they might see themselves as closer to someone from Asaba. But not someone from Owerri. And she explicitly denied the possibility of any interest in any political alliances with Igbos. Yet claims that they would not be opposed to looking West. And your conclusion after reading these two posts is that Edo is closer to Igbo than Yoruba? And I am the one misreading posts, or selectively reading? How much more do you want someone to deny you than to say her people want to have nothing to do with yours? ![]() |
Obiagu1:PapaBrowne is the only person who has made this claim, out of many Edo posters who have posted on this thread. I am not inclined to place any special weight upon his words, especially given his antecedents as a PDP sycophant. To demonstrate your point, you'd need ~50% saying yes, rather than only 1 out of many. . . Try harder. |
Eh, we have nothing in common with Fulani, aside from certain events in Ilorin. They are a devilish and evil tribe anyways. But I don't want to derail this thread on that topic. Perhaps best for another thread. |
The only person claiming any sort of SE connection is PapaBrowne. And this is purely for political reasons, because he is a PDP man. He is not claiming any cultural affinity or even CURRENT political affinity. For him it is, "If it were up to me, Edo would be doing X, Y, and Z." |
Where has Physics or edo.girl claimed any connection with Western Igbo? Kindly quote and show me. You have been denied severally by almost all the Edo here ![]() |
The one I've heard is some ethnic group in the NE of Nigeria that has/had similar tribal marks. Supposedly when migrating from Sudan or wherever we came from, some of them stopped there, while the rest of us continued south and west. I cannot remember the name of this ethnic group though. |
When did the Yoruba ever have a truce with Gobir? Who was this Jihadist ruler of Gobir? The same state conquered by Usman Dan Fodio in the 1800s? Or are they claiming that Yoruba began in the 1800s? Strange story. |
Why are you even responding to Obiagu1? Don't you notice that no one else is paying him any attention on his own thread? ![]() If he choses to ignore the words of almost every single Edo person who has posted on this thread and denied an Igbo connection, that is his own choice. |
I have read somewhere also that when the Nupes defeated the Oyo Empire (I guess circa 1400s or so? perhaps earlier? no doubt someone will correct me) they replaced the ruling dynasty with one of their own guys. So if the current Alaafin is a descendant of that same dynasty, then his distant ancestors may very well be Nupe, for all we know. Who knows what other intermixing happened. Yoruba aren't really some sort of pure "race" imo (not that any group on earth is.) We've interacted with our neighbors, traded with them, enslaved them, been enslaved by them, had migrants enter our land, etc. But racial/ethnic purity isn't really important to me personally anyways. |
I don't think it can be up to 30%. But probably some fraction like 3 or 5%. Oyo Empire captured tons and tons of slaves. Where did all those Hausa slaves go to? Some escaped when Afonja had his rebellion. But surely not all of them did. |
Heh by the time you become king of a people, then your prior ethnicity/origin is irrelevant If they decide to make me ruler of some small village in Uzbekistan today, while I may still be Yoruba my kids (who i'd like to see suceed me on the throne) will no more be Yoruba, but instead Uzebeks |
Itsekiri are basically a mix of probably Ijebu Yoruba, Edo folk, Igala, Urhobo, Isoko. At least this is the sense I get from what I've read about them in the past. But their language is basically a dialect of Yoruba. . . |
ezeagu:Interesting. I'll take a look at this. Any other references? Btw, Edo and Igala are not separated physically. Igala is north of Edo. |
This guy seems to have been banned by the spam filter: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?action=profile;u=836508 |
Personally I don't consider Itsekiri a different ethnic group from Yoruba. The dialect of Yoruba spoken in my hometown is more difficult for a native Yoruba speaker to understand than Itsekiri is. I consider them to be a subtribe of Yoruba. Regarding Igala, I think that Yoruba and Igala are the two most similar distinct ethnic groups in Nigeria. The language. . . the way it sounds. Watching videos of their music on Youtube. If I "squint" my ears slightly it sounds like Yoruba. |
