ezeagu:How do we know that they are Igbo market days, rather than say Igala or Bini market days? Igala migrated into the Northern Anambra and Delta regions and joined Igbo communities, there was once a war between the northern Igbo (as in the Igbo in the north) and the Igala. So I was correct in saying that some (possibly many?) Northern Anambra Igbos have Igala origins. |

Ikene Remo right? Which is an Ijebu kingdom. |
I've also heard of this Ijebu alternative origin story. This is why I suspect that most of these Oduduwa stories, etc, etc are just convenient fiction. Kind of amusing in retrospect that an Ijebu man like Awolowo would be the driving force behind Egbe Omo Oduduwa ![]() Anyway, the fiction in this particular case is more useful than what the facts probably are. So let's stick to the fiction ![]() |
ACN should be heartened by its strong showing this cycle, and should redouble their efforts in 4 years time. This is a marathon, not a sprint. |
No. Polygamous families. . . seem complicated |
So the question is, what does "learn French in a month" mean? Do we mean being able to write long essays/give long speeches on politics, history, stochastic differential equations? Probably not. But I think that you can get to the point where you can hold basic 3-5 minute conversations. Where is the bathroom? Oh is this girl your sister? No man, I'm not a fan of Radiohead, I think they suck. Yes, my best friend from college is Mexican. No, I don't really like cheese on my hamburger. Go fvck yourself. How much does this lawnmower cost? That is too much! Etc, etc. That is enough to get by. It isn't mastery or fluency, but enough to conduct your daily business. Will you stumble when you cannot remember how to say lawnmower? Yes. But then you'll just say, "La cosa que corta el cesped", etc. This is enough to get by and not completely embarrass yourself in a foreign country, imo. |
bah i was pretty sure i was making a mistake, thanks for catching it. title changing now, |
As an aside, if you ever want to learn a language really rapidly (and importantly, speak it with a good accent), I'd suggest checking out Pimsleur. I used a Pimsleur audio course to get very good at Spanish during December 2004. By January 15th, 2005, my speaking skills were pretty decent. Enough to get by at the Mexican market at least. Granted, I'd take a bit of Spanish in high school, so it wasn't like I was starting from zero. But if for whatever reason I have to learn say French or Portuguese and have 30 days to do it, I feel like with 4-5 hours a day of effort I can get the basics within a month. Romance languages especially. . . their structure is so damn similar. It is almost as if they are just several dialects of one language. |
Katsumoto:Fluency in anything in a month is impossible. But working knowledge, enough to understand and make yourself understood? I think you can do it in a month. Especially if you do full immersion like moving to an entirely new country. |
The above linked article should hopefully be fairly convincing regarding the Igala/Yoruba connection. |
Kats, I'm not sure I agree with this last statement of yours. Native Spanish speakers, most of them understand Italian or Portuguese (they can follow Italian or Portuguese language TV very well.) Now maybe French is very different from these other Romance languages. But I expect a Portuguese speaker to be able to get a good, basic command of say Spanish in a month. Enough to make himself understood, at least. |

Giants vs. Pats. Who you got? |
Odumchi, some of your towns/villages in northern Anambra were even founded by Igala ancestors. Yet today are populated by people who call themselves Igbo (despite the fact that their ancestors may not have been Igbo.) Is this not true? |
ACM10: What evidence would be sufficient for you? Linguistic? Stories from the Igala themselves? Audio of the Bible translated into both Yoruba and Igala? What would be sufficient evidence of a connection for you? I'm not necessarily interested in proving/demonstrating this to you, but I am curious what your threshold is. |
Nope, there are some Igbos in northern Anambra who are related to Igala. Or so I have read, at least. Perhaps ACM10 is one of these, hence his denial of the Igala-Yoruba connection ![]() |
So someone still doesn't believe that this word "Yoruboid" exists? And ACM10 also doesn't believe that there is a connection between Igala and Yoruba? Maybe he is one of those Igbos with Igala ancestry, so doesn't want to believe ![]() |
Guido Van Rossum (the python guy) is dutch, I assume? But yeah, Ruby was obscure before Rails. Fortunately what I see from companies these days is that they don't care what language you know (since presumably you can pick up new syntax in a week or less), but that you are just a good programmer. And by "good programmer", they mean able to answer programming puzzles, lol |
Hehehehe I am glad that this thread was created, moreover that it was created by an Igbo ![]() |
What I want to know is why someone else's land/territory should have been given away as compensation for crimes Europeans committed against Jews. Why wasn't a piece of Germany given to them as compensation? |
If you've not controlled a land for thousands of years, then what claim can you make? Jews had not controlled Jerusalem for 2500+ years prior to 1900. The only way they gained control of it was through the help of the UN and Europe as a result of European guilt. |
Python seems to be more popular in the corporate world though. Google for example. Ruby seems to be primarily popular with people building websites. Oh well, it won't be hard for me to pick up Python at some point if I need to. I do think that the Ruby libraries are better. A lot better organized than the Python equivalents, at least. |
You know they thought about establishing a homeland for Jews in Uganda (or one of those countries)? Maybe African countries and their leaders would then also be viewed as unbalanced villains for being upset at this happening. |
When did Iran commit itself to wiping out Israel? The white man is a very cunning creature. He hates Jews just as much as he claims Iranians and Arabs do. In fact, he persecuted Jews far worse in Europe than anything anyone has ever done. Culminating in the genocide of those Jews during WW2. Yet rather than as penance, establishing a homeland in Europe for the Jews (say, a piece of Germany), instead he dumps his problem on someone else. Somehow this entire story has been spun into the Iranians and Arabs persecuting the Jews and Israel. All of this makes no damn sense to me. Anyway, having spent most of my life observing how white culture works, I just know that I will make sure that my own people master propaganda as well. Mr Europe: "I'm so sorry for what we did to you over the past 1500 years in Europe. As compensation, I will give you somebody else's land." Mr Middle East: "Err wait a sec, wtf? I didn't have sh1t to do with what you guys did to them. Why should I suffer?" |
I would also invest more energy in propaganda. This is one thing that the US and Israel excels at, and one thing in my opinion Yoruba do very poorly |
Iran has very good reasons to be pissed at the West, lol. Study their history a bit. Anyway, all I know is that if I ever come into power in Yorubaland, even though I would seek to become very good friends with the US, I would also invest in a nuclear weapons program. . . just in case. It is good to have a Plan A, but also have a Plan B if A doesn't work out. Nobody can begrudge the Iranians for pursing their Plan B, imo |
Delomos's advice above is on point. Btw I've seen adverts on Fbook for that "learn python the hard way" course. To be honest, I wish I'd gotten into Python instead of Ruby 2 years ago. Oh well, both are good choices for someone starting. |
One of the most important holidays I've seen Iranians celebrate is Persian New Year. This is a holiday that to my knowledge has pagan (or Zoroastrian?) origins. Even Hausa Muslims, for whom Islam is a relatively recent phenomenon to my knowledge don't have any major pagan national holidays. Not to talk of an Arab. So like I said, I'm not convinced that Iranians are excessively pious. |
Unless of course this is for your job/money/two different classes you are taking that use two different languages, in which case you have no choice. |
No. Focus on one, learn it very well. Mastery of a topic is better than mediocrity in two topics. |
