Imo, split the university into two or have a relatively independent board that oversees it and looks after the school's best interest.

I dunno how sustainable mouth-only agreements of cooperation are going to be.
Politics › Oyo, Osun To Make Joint Proclamation On Lautech by ektbear(op): 11:50am On Jun 12, 2011
By Gbenga Faturoti, Correspondent, Osogbo

Osun State Government has assured students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) that the two state governors of Osun and Oyo, will soon issue a joint statement that will put an end to the crisis rocking the institution in the last two years.
Osun State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Laoye-Tomori, gave the rassurance Friday when she received the students of LAUTECH that embarked on a peaceful protest to the state secretariat.
The deputy governor who stood in for Governor Rauf Aregbesola explained that discussion is in top gear between the governors of Oyo and Osun to nip the problems of the institution in the bud once and for all.
She promised that very soon the lingering problems will become a thing of the past and implored students to always be law-abiding while agitating for their demands.
While describing as blatant lie the statement credited to the vice chancellor of LAUTECH that the institution has been taken over by Oyo State, Laoye-Tomori assured the students that LAUTECH belongs to both Oyo and Osun state governments and nothing can change it.
She stated further that the institution’s school fees increased by the former governor of Oyo state, Otunba Alao-Akala was null and void.
Earlier, the spokesperson of the students, Mr. Abiola Adejare and Mr. Oyewumi Opeyemi had appealed to Osun and Oyo state governors, Rauf Aregbesola and Senator Abiola Ajimobi to consider their plights and create an enabling environment for them to write their examinations.
They explained that the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has given the final year students time to graduate on or before June 10, 2011.
The students stated further that by the end of June, the accreditation of LAUTECH would lapse and MCDN has said that it was wrong for the former governor of Oyo state to force medical students to Ogbomoso campus of LAUTECH to undergo medical training and write their examinations.

PhysicsMHD, before I read that report I had the vague impression that agitation for the Midwest region actually had some sort of firm basis. Some sort of theft of money/transfer of resources, unfair political representation, ethnic domination, etc.

But from reading that report, the opposite seems to be true. Especially the economic stuff (cocoa vs rubber). Very likely there was a net subsidy in the direction of the Midwest. Seems the biggest failing of the Western Region was spending slightly less per mile on road in the Midwest than it did in the West. Compare this with the litany of complaints/concerns raised by the minorities of the Eastern or Northern regions, for example.

In fact, from reading that report, it seems to me that minorities had the best lot in the SW region and the worst lot in the SE.

Does this report paint an accurate picture? Or does it ignore certain grievances?

There is far more interesting stuff in there than the origins of PH. . . isn't really the main point of the report. And I was under the impression that part of PH also includes Okrika land.

Katsumoto:
Well after it seemed that the coup was going to fail, every Igbo politician or military man (Ironsi) saw the opportunity for Igbo power. Even though their colleagues had been murdered in cold blood

1. The Igbo members of NCNC caucased to deny the NPC the right to select the new PM after the murder of Balewa even though the NPC was the senior party in the coalition.
2. Nwafor Orizu, after speaking with Zik who was away on holiday (another 'miracle') refused to handover to the NPC selected candidate to take over as PM preferring instead to handover to Ironsi, another Igboman
3. Despite the gravity and manner of assissination of senior political and military leaders, Ironsi refused to court-martial the plotters.
4. The plotters failed to kill Ironsi perhaps, because they realised that if their coup failed, another Igbo man would be top dog and could protect them. This was the case as Ironsi did not attempt to try them.
5. An Igbo agenda does not necessarily mean that all Igbo people were involved in the coup but that Igbo elements in the government and military were attempting a take-over.
Pshaw. All a coincidence. Nigeria is a land of miracles. Though it cracks me up that they blocked the NPC from selecting a new PM grin

Stabbed their Hausa allies right in the back.

A document written in 1957 describing the agitation for minority rights and state creation in Nigeria.

A very interesting read. Things you'll see there might surprise you.

This Adaka Boro Centre has scanned a copy of it and made it available here: http://www.adakaboro.org/thewillinkcomm

Parts 1 through 3 are available here (4.7 MB PDF doc): http://www.adakaboro.org/thewillinkcomm/doc_download/22-the-1958-willink-commission-report-parts-i-iii

But this seems to be the official record of events.

Or are you denying your alliance with the Hausa at independence?

100% wrong.

Willinks report is available online for you to read here: http://www.adakaboro.org/thewillinkcomm

Granted, I wasn't alive in the 1950s, but there is no indication from that report that those in the East and North were any less outspoken than those in the West.

why are trying to blame somebody for creation of midwest? Remember that it was because of the minorities that led to the constituting of willinks commission in 1957with one of the suggestion of creation of a separate region for them, albeit, willinks found a better of defending the minorities without the creation of a separate region, but that spirit of separation was instilled in those minorities then.
The Western region was not the only region in Nigeria with ethnic minorities. All three regions had them.

Yet why was it only the Western region that was partitioned? This after Awolowo was jailed by a kangaroo court, btw.

@alex101: I will temporarily assume that you are discussing in good faith.

So I guess to you, the coup of 1966 was a nationalistic act to help out the rest of the country, yes?

So why did you sabatoge a part of that country earlier, in collaboration with your Northern allies?

What suddenly decided to make you guys altruistic nationalists in 1966 rather than playing the same regionalist game everyone else was playing up to that point?

A) intervene in the internal affairs of the Western region
B) Declare a state of emergency
C) Jail Awo in a kangaroo court
D) Partition the Western region

Clearly those are evil things to do.

At any rate, the evil that you did came back to bite you in the @ss.

A: Because in Nigeria, there is a government-sponsored cement oligopoly, with Dangote being the primary beneficiary.

I wonder if anyone has studied this quantitatively.

So this is now the point of the coup, right? To prevent Northern domination of Nigeria?

But who, pray tell enabled this? Which ally did the North use to emasculate the Western region?

The problem I have with many of these political commentators is that they ignore the events that occurred BEFORE the coup. How exactly did Akintola prevail over Awolowo? How exactly was Awolowo jailed? How did the Midwestern region come into being? What happened with the 1962 census?

As I said, the coup was likely an attempt to correct the mistakes you made which allowed the North to grow disproportionately strong.
Politics › Re: To Save Nigeria: The Revolutionary Coup And The Civil War by ektbear: 11:20pm On Jun 11, 2011
My own suspicion of the truth of this matter is that not much actually went wrong with this coup.

It was purely an attempt by the Easterners to decapitate their erstwhile allies, the Northerners who they realized had grown too powerful (you can read about the census a few years before the coup which caused a dispute between North and East.)

Which is fine and well. But don't try to sell that as any act of patriotism or anything other than serving sectarian interest.

In other words, don't piss on me and tell me that it is only raining.
Politics › Re: To Save Nigeria: The Revolutionary Coup And The Civil War by ektbear: 11:04pm On Jun 11, 2011
Hehe. Patriotic coup indeed. If only these foolish ofe mmanu and abokis could have embraced those who shed the blood of their leaders to liberate them.

Why couldn't they accept the noble act of these patriots?

Ingrates.

Yorubus especially. After all, weren't these coup plotters intent on making Awolowo leader? The same guy the Northern region and Eastern region conspired to jail after a sham trial in a kangaroo court?

Can you imagine the gall of these b@stards claiming they are executing a coup to save you?
