Justice Abubakar Abdulkadir Jega, a judge of the Court of Appeal, is among the over 717 pilgrims killed in Thursday stampede in Mina, Saudi Arabia.

Family sources confirmed to Daily Trust that his body was found at the morgue in Mina.

‎Justice Jega was a member of the Kebbi State Government delegation to 2015 hajj.

The deceased is a brother to immediate past chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission Professor Attahiru Jega and Daily Trust's Deputy Editor-In-Chief Malam Mahmud Jega.

Nigerian officials joined other countries' hajj officials ‎in Mina morgue to identify their nationalities.

The Nigerian hajj officials are still compiling the list of Nigerians affected.

Other prominent Nigerians so far confirmed killed in the stampede include the ‎Deputy Secretary General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs Professor Tijjani Abubakar El-Miskin as well as veteran journalist and prominent civil society activist Hajiya Bilkisu.

The deadly stampede occurred while pilgrims were on their way to perform the symbolic hajj ritual of "stoning of the devil" at the Jamarat Bridge outside Makkah, in Saudi Arabia.

About N60m has been paid as compensation to people whose lands were used for the construction of a helipad for President Muhammadu Buhari in his home town in Daura.Over four hectares of land was used for the helipad.Speaking at the presentation of cash and cheques to the beneficiaries at the weekend, the Secretary to the State Government, Mustapha Inuwa, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands and Survey, Salihu Rimi, said standard procedures were followed in the payment and to ascertain the true owners of the land.
He said the true copies of certificates of occupancy and yellow cards were all verified before the payment. Before the construction of the helipad, President Buhari used school play grounds for helicopter landings when coming home.

The Nigerian Army on Friday raised alarm over plans by “some highly-placed individuals” in the North East, particularly Borno State, to sabotage military operations in the region.

A statement by the army spokesman, Sani Usman, said the elite were bent on having the activities of the Boko Haram terrorists prolonged for their selfish interests.

Mr. Usman, a colonel, did not however state in clear terms the means through which the notable individuals were undermining the war against terrorism or how they would benefit from the insurgency when prolonged.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to inform the public and send a very strong and serious final warning to some prominent individuals and political groups who hailed from Borno State in particular and North East generally, that there is information of plans by some highly placed individuals and political groups to undermine and scuttle the fight against terrorism and insurgency in this country.

“The unscrupulous individuals and their cohorts were determined to reverse the gains made and scuttle our efforts of achieving the Presidential directive to defeat Boko Haram terrorists within 3 months. They are enlisting the services of some Non-Governmental Organizations in this grand design.

“It has come to our knowledge that they were employing every means to see that the operation does not succeed in order for them to continue to enjoy certain benefits.

“It has been revealed that they are employing the services of marabouts and other unethical means in order to frustrate our efforts and the operations in addition to campaign of calumny.

“We are aware of their clandestine meetings and other diabolical efforts to achieve their nefarious aims. This would not be tolerated.

“Therefore, such individuals and groups should be warned in unmistakable terms that anyone found would be dealt with accordingly.

“People should place the interest of the nation above any personal gain or ambition. The continued lost of lives and property in this country through terrorists activities does not one any good,” the army spokesman said.

Located in the south-south geopolitical zone of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State was created in 1987. The state belongs to one of the oil producing states of the Niger Delta and it has a population of 3,920,208 and a land area of 6,900 sq Km. The state is made up of thirty one (31) local government areas and these are Abak, Eastern-Obolo, Eket, Nsit-Atai, Esit Eket, Essien-Udim, Etim-Ekpo, Etinan, Ibeno, Ibesikpo-Asutan, Ibiono-Ibom, Ika, Ikono, Ikot-Abasi, Ikot-Ekpene, Ini, Itu, Mbo, Mkpat-Enim, Nsit-Ibom, Nsit-Ubium, Obot-Akara, Okobo, Onna, Oron, oruk-Anam, Udung-Uko, Ukanafun, Uruan, Urue offong/Oruk, Uyo.

History.
Before it was created, Akwa Ibom State was formerly a part of the South-Eastern state within the old Eastern Region of Nigeria. Following the 1976 state creation, it became part of Cross River State before a further restructuring of the Nigerian Federation saw the birth of Akwa Ibom as a state in 1987.

People & Culture.
Akwa Ibom State is made up of a homogenous group of people believed to have originated from a single ancestral stock. The languages spoken in the state are closely related, and the Annang and Ibibio languages are mostly identical with a few dialectical differences. The Eket and Ibeno languages are more closely related to each other than to the other two, and are only partially understandable by speakers of the other two languages.

The Ibibio are the largest group, whilst the Annang, which form the second largest group, speak a language very similar to the Ibibio Language. Ibeno and Eket speak a similar language, and are located by the ocean. The Ibibio language belongs to the Benue-Congo language family, which forms part of the Niger- Congo group of languages.

The cultural similarity amongst the people of the state is also epitomized in folklore, songs, dances, food, beliefs and mythology. The people are predominantly of the Christian faith although some native African religions are in practice to some extent.Akwa Ibom people are farmers, craftsmen, and merchants. A majority of the rural populace engage in farming.

Other traditional occupations of the people are fishing, trading, hunting, wood-carving, raffia works, blacksmithing, pottery, iron works, tailoring, and crafts creation.

Former secretary to the Government of the federation Chief Olu Falae was kidnapped by suspected herdsmen in Akure, Ondo State, on Monday morning.

The Nation gathered that Falae, who was a former minister of Finance during Gen. Ibrahim Babangida’s regime, had been having a running battle with herdsmen at his farmland at Famo, Igbatoro, Akure.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Wole Ogodo, who confirmed the incident, said 50 mobile policemen have been deployed to the farm to search for him.Ogodo said, “Baba Falae has been have been having a running battle with the herdsmen and this morning, we learnt that he visited the farm and he was allegedly attack by these herdsmen. But we have sent 50 of our men to the farm to begin the search for him.”

The Federal Ministry of Justice on Friday asked the Code of Conduct Tribunal to issue bench warrant for the arrest of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

According to media reports, Mr. M.S Hassan, a deputy director in the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, applied for the warrant of arrest, following the Senate President’s refusal to appear before the tribunal on Thursday.

The Code of Conduct Bureau has filed a 13- count corruption charge against Saraki for failing to properly declare his assets.

In a similar development, Kennedy Izuagbe, a former director of the defunct Societe Generale Bank Nigeria Plc and managing director of Carlisle Properties and Investment Limited, a company allegedly owned by Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has been declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The Saraki family also held majority shares in Societe-Generale bank which went under due to bad management.

Izuagbe, 45, who is being investigated in a case of conspiracy and money laundering to the tune of over N3.6 billion, has gone into hiding and all efforts to reach him have proved abortive, the EFCC said in a statement by spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwajaren, adding that Izuagbe is linked to the several shady deals and gross financial misconducts that took place in the bank, in which several millions of naira were granted as loan without due diligence.

The suspect, who is believed to have fled the country, is a native of Iviukhua village, near Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The whereabouts of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki are unknown as at the time of filing this report. Informed security sources who spoke to BREAKING TIMES on Friday disclosed that relevant security agents have been put on notice to effect the arrest of Nigeria’s number 3 citizen.

ABUJA – Nigeria’s determination to rout out insurgency has got boosted by a commitment by French government to support the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF) with intelligence gathering and high tech military equipment.The commitment announced on Monday by the French President, Mr. François Hollande after a closed door bilateral meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at Elsee Palace in Paris.It will be recalled that president Buhari left Abuja for Paris on a three-day official visit to France.

Addressing a joint press conference, the French President shared the concern of his government on the increasing spate of terrorism and insecurity in Nigerian and other lake Chad countries.According to him, the meeting with president Buhari was essentially resolved around some new strategies to foster partnership and cooperation to enable Nigeria and its neighboring countries of Cameroun, Chad, Niger and Benin Republic completely stamp put terrorism through the joint action of the MJTF.President Hollande also recalled that his country had last year hosted a Regional Summit on Security in Paris to galvanize thoughts on how to end terrorism.“We provide all of the support to the countries in the region which are affected by this cult and in Nigeria, we want to provide support and solidarity,” he stated.He commended President Buhari for initiating the relocation Nigeria’s highest military command to Maiduguri, the hotbed of the Boko Haram, saying it has so far produced tangible results.Speaking further, president Hollande disclosed that France has concluded arrangements to invest a total of €130million in the development of infrastructure in Nigeria for rebuilding of roads, provision of electricity and water supply, even as he hailed the economy of Nigeria under president Buhari despite the dwindling oil prices.“The Nigerian economy remains strong so, France wants to be doing business in the country.”Also speaking, President Buhari expressed gratitude to the French president for chosing to assist Nigeria over insurgency.

Another problem is the problem in the Gulf of Guinea, from Senegal to Angola, that area is endowed with resources like petroleum and other minerals but surrounded by piracy and theft.“We are going to depend on France and G7 countries to flush these criminals out of the region.”President also who stated that unemployment has been a source of worry for the government at home informed his host that his was working hard to revitalize the agricultural sector.“We want to make sure we feed ourself and provide security before other things are also tackled.“That is why we focus on agriculture and mining before other infrastructure including electricity are tackled”, he said.Apart from discussing issue of climate change of which Nigeria is an interested party, the two leaders also deliberated on a Memorandum of Understanding to build a €30M project solar power plant in one of the local governments of Osun State.The capacity of the solar power plant is gathered to generate 10 to 14 megawatts.The leaders also discussed the issues of establishing a joint committee to increase trade and investment.It will recalled also that Nigeria and France last year signed bilateral agreements which enables the French government to provide 1.170 Million dollars soft loan through the french development agency AFD for the construction of high voltage power lines and substations that will connect Abuja with electrical distribution network.Meanwhile, talks between both countries were expected to continue today.

Scores of workers at La casera Company Plc staged a protest on Monday in Lagos, moments after about 700 workers received their sack letters.The company, however, described the protest as an invasion of its premises by “hoodlums”.The crisis began after the workers arrived at the company premises in Amuwo Odofin Industrial Estate, Mile 2, Lagos, and found the gate locked against them and a notice of disengagement pasted at the entrance.The notice dated September 14 and addressed to all members of staff, said: “as a result of the unwarranted breaking-in and invasion of our business premises on September 11, we cannot guarantee the well-being of our employees from hired hoodlums and their collaborators.“As a result of this unprovoked act of vandalism, we are unable to continue operations under this circumstance.“Unfortunately we regret to inform all our staff of their immediate disengagement.’’The workers, under the aegis of the National Union of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE), condemned the act, noting that some of them had worked for between five and 15 years.Some of their placards read: “No more slavery in this country by foreigners (India); “We are against Xenophobia from India” and “We can never be slaves in our fathers’ land.”Mike Olarenwaju, head of education department in NUFBTE, who spoke for the workers, said for 12 years the company had denied workers the right to be unionised.Olarenwaju said that when an in-house union was about to be inaugurated, the management of the company sacked the chairman, which made the NUFBTE officials to visit the company on Friday, September 11 to address the workers.“We were surprised today that the company locked the gate and sacked the workers,” he said.“Meanwhile, the case between the workers and the company over unionisation is currently at the National Industrial Court.”Olarenwaju urged the government to intervene in issues of unfair labour practices being perpetrated by foreign companies.He said that until the workers were re-absorbed, the union would continue to picket the company.Idowu Adelakun, the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), told NAN that the act of calling labour officials hoodlums was wrong and vowed that labour would not allow the company to function until the matter was resolved.Lacasera is a beverage company owned by Indians which started operations in Nigeria in year 2000.When contacted, the human resources manager of the company, identified as Otemewo, told NAN on phone that he was not aware of the crisis and promised to call back when he obtains details of the sack.
