PoliticsBuhari : Boko Haram Will Last Longer Than December by elbinmanny(op): 2:51pm On Oct 26, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari says desperate actions like detonation of Improvised Explosive Devices will take a longer time to eradicate, even as his administration’s optimism continues to grow that Boko Haram will be crushed by December.

Buhari said this yesterday in his message delivered at hospitals, palaces and Government Houses of Adamawa and Borno States by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, who led a Federal Government delegation to condole with their governments and people over the increased activities of Boko Haram terrorists.

The president was also quoted to have said that even when all displaced communities were about to be returned to their town and villages, there would still remain “vital tests and challenges”.Buhari, in his message, said all Nigerians must work hard to eradicate all forms of extremism and join hands with security forces in detecting unrepentant terrorists embedded in their neighbourhoods. “As I said a few times in the past, desperate actions such as the detonation of IEDs will take a longer time to eradicate even as our optimism continues to grow that Boko Haram as a fighting force will be crushed by the year’s end. After that, we hope all displaced communities will be returned to their towns and villages. But even when this is about to happen, there will still remain vital tests and challenges.

Buhari, appealed to local populations to share in the responsibility for security in their surroundings, directed all communities in the country to revert to old practices by which new arrivals in their neighbourhoods were taken note of by local chiefs and security agencies, saying these practices worked well in past in securing neighbourhoods and local communities.Commiserating with victims’ families and the inpatients in the hospitals visited by the delegation on his behalf, the president assured of the support and the determination of his administration to end the menace of the Boko Haram terrorists by the year’s end.“The security situation in the North East remains a great source of concern for me. Although there are clear indications that the military is recording great successes in the theatre of operations, the enemy has been able to carry out his murderous campaign by attacking soft targets using Improvised Explosive Devices. His intention is to create widespread fear amongst the civilian population since he cannot subdue our armed forces,” Buhari further stated.

PoliticsTanzanians Commend Jonathan, Call Him ‘hero Of Credible Election In Africa by elbinmanny(op): 10:40pm On Oct 19, 2015
Today, October 19, the immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan, is leaving the country for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Tanzanians describe Goodluck Jonathan as “a hero of free and fair election in Africa”.The ex-president had been earlier appointed the leader of the Commonwealth international observers to monitor the Tanzanian general elections scheduled for October 25.

The Daily News of Tanzania reports that citizens of the country are anxious and happy that the former Nigerian leader will lead a 33-nation observer mission.Describing him as “a hero of free and fair election in Africa”, Tanzanians are sure that Jonathan’s presence will bring credibility to the polls.

Reports coming from the country indicate that the upcoming elections might be the toughest elections in the country’s history. Like in Nigeria’s polls, the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party, which has been in power since Tanzania’s return to multiparty democracy in 1992 is being challenged by a united opposition that has been making significant electoral gains.

PoliticsBREAKING: Nigerian Military Releases 182 Boko Haram Prisoners In Maiduguri by elbinmanny(op): 6:11pm On Sep 30, 2015
SaharaReporters has confirmed that the Nigerian Army has released 182 prisoners from Maimalari Barracks in Maiduguri, Borno State. These prisoners were detained because of their suspected ties to Boko Haram and were reportedly released to the Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima.SaharaReporters confirmed that 40 boys, 24 women, and 18 children were among those released today. About 100 adult men were also released.Army Spokesman, Colonel SK Usman, told SaharaReporters that the “joint intelligence community investigated and authorized” the release of these prisoners.

He added that the release was part of Nigeria’s National Army Day, which was held on July 6th to commemorate the first shots of Nigeria’s Civil War at Garkem, Cross Rivers State.

In addition to the prisoner release, Colonel Usman said that the Army was celebrating the opening of a new military center, providing two days of free medical treatment for Borno State residents, and awarding Purple Heart and Operation Zaman Lafiya medals to soldiers fighting Boko Haram. All these events were tied to Nigeria’s National Army Day.Colonel Usman told SaharaReporters that he was not in a position to discuss high-level policy decisions, including Amnesty Programs or whether negotiations with Boko Haram were underway.Last week President Buhari announced that his administration would be willing to negotiate with Boko Haram but “not from a position of weakness.” It has also been reported by SaharaReporters that Boko Haram has publicly stated that it would not engage in talks with the Nigerian government while some of its members were detained.
Army Spokesman, Colonel SK Usman, told SaharaReporters that the “joint intelligence community investigated and authorized” the release of these prisoners. He added that the release was part of Nigeria’s National Army Day, which was held on July 6th to commemorate the first shots of Nigeria’s Civil War at Garaken, Cross Rivers State.
