Yask2guy:

So this was how my interview went on November 27, 2019...
Me: Good morning ma'am
VO: Good morning, pass me your passport
Me: Should I include my I-20?
VO: Pls do
VO: Why are you going to the US
Me: I'm going to the United States of America to have my PhD. degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Kentucky in Lexington
VO: Why University of Kentucky?
Me: I got to realize, during my online search, that the University of Kentucky meets my expectations with respect to my research specialization. I realized that Dr.__ specializes in fate and transport of environmental contaminants (had the mind to express myself further but wouldn't know what killed my morale at this point, just got blank)
VO: How many schools did you apply to?
Me: I was able to complete my application to only University of Kentucky. I would have also applied to University of Colorado but my GRE score was not up to the required score of the school
VO: What's your GRE score?
Me: 300 (I proceeded to give the breakdown)
VO: What do you do?
Me: I work as an Assistant Lecturer at....
VO: What will this PhD. do for you?
Me: Apart from my research, the Ph.D. will give me the opportunity to gain promotion to the position of full Lecturer as the position I currently hold is a training position that requires further training (meanwhile, I had prepared to say something different entirely but someone gave the advice and I thought it weighed more than what I planned initially, so my subconscious took it instead)
VO: Why are you changing career
Me: No, I would not be changing career. My first and second degrees were in Water Resources Management and I intend to specialize in Water Resources Engineering during this program. Moreover, I intend to focus on water treatment, which is better handled in Civil Engineering.
VO: What do you do?
Me: I work as an Assistant Lecturer at ** University.
VO: What do you teach? (I couldn't hear what she was saying until the third time)
Me: I teach water related courses (I had to say this twice and later realized I should have been explicit enough)
VO: Have you traveled out of Nigeria before?
Me: No, I have never had the need to
VO: Are you married?
Me: No, I'm not
VO: Started typing...
Me: In my mind, I felt it was going to be positive as she continued to type. Then a smile appeared on my face as she opened her mouth to say the unexpected.
VO: I'm sorry I won't be able to approve your visa this time. Then she passed my passport and I-20 with a yellow paper to me.
Me: I collected them with a smile and told her thank you.

Well, my observations were that I didn't make my intentions explicit enough and my reasons for choosing the school was not convincing enough, at least for a Ph.D. programme. Also, I allowed the stress I encountered (starting from the huge traffic on the way, the queue before being allowed into the waiting chamber) to take a better part of me. Most of my responses were not relayed as planned.

Now, this is my proposed transcript for the next interview scheduled for the second week in January at Abuja consulate...

Me: Good morning, Sir! How are you doing?
VO: Good morning, how are you doing?
Me: I'm doing fine, thank you.
VO: Pass me your passport and I-20
Me: Here they are.
VO: Why are you going to the US?
Me: I'm going to the US to have my Doctorate degree in Civil Engineering with specialization in Water Resources Engineering at the University of Kentucky.
VO: Why this school?
Me: Apart from the full time research assistantship I was offered, which covers my tuition fee with a generous stipend that covers my living expenses, the school meets my expectations with respect to research specialization. My guidance, Dr. __ who specializes in the fate and transport of environmental contaminants and their treatment also specializes in Water Disinfection, which is a problem I intend to tackle when I am back to Nigeria after my programme in the US.
VO: Do you know why you were previously denied?
Me: Well, I wouldn't be so sure but it could have been that I was unable to explicitly demonstrate my intentions for going to the US.
VO: So what are your intentions?
Me: Well, over the years I have conducted researches on the assessment of groundwater quality in ... city where my school is domiciled and I've realized that majority of the populace of the city depend on groundwater for their domestic needs with some consuming the water without any form of treatment. However, the groundwater system of this city is to a high extent contaminated with constituents that include chloride, nitrate, lead, potassium and microbes with high values of EC, which could be detrimental to human health. It is my intention to, however, use the knowledge gained from my Ph.D. to develop an affordable and sustainable treatment mechanism to resolve issues related to water contamination and prevent the spread of waterborne ailments.
V0: so why are you changing career?
Me: It is my joy to have a breakthrough in my research career by achieving my goal and the best way to be better equipped with water treatment skills is through a degree in Water Resources Engineering. University of Kentucky offers Water Resources Engineering under Civil Engineering. I contacted the graduate school before submitting my applications and I was told my academic transcripts will be reviewed to see if I qualify for the programme. I should tell you that I took courses that include water supply engineering, waste water engineering, fluid mechanics, hydraulic structure domiciled in Civil and Mechanical engineering Departments in my first and second degrees. So, it is just an avenue to further develop my skills and knowledge.
VO: What do you do?
Me: I work as an Assistant Lecturer at ... University where I teach water related courses such as Water Quality Assessment and Pollution Control, Principles of Irrigation, Hydraulic structures and Elements of Hydrology. I am also a researcher by default. In fact I have a letter from my institution.
VO: What will you be doing as a research assistant?
Me: I will be actively involved in research with Dr. __, which will involve carrying out field assessment, data collection and analysis and report writing.
VO: What do you know about University of Kentucky?
Me: I know that the school is ranked 132 among National Colleges in the US and is located in Lexington city, which is 80 miles south of Cincinnati and 200 miles Northeast of Nashville.
VO: I am glad to inform you that I will be approving your visa this time (this is my prayer to Almighty God).
Kindly review my proposed transcript and suggest where I need to improve.
May God bless you all.
i find your original transcript well organized but i think the problem is your travel history and relationship status ..i want to believe if you try and engage the VO about your phd in more details he will overlook that.

You may want to exercise a little patience. November 22 vs 5th December isn’t that far apart; and don’t barge the man with emails about your PhD application, be considerate at least he assured you that you are the best applicant.
He might want to take you but he isn’t the only one required in making such decisions and he may be expecting a grant or some funding.

If you cannot bear the waiting time, apply to other universities. They make admit decisions at different times so ...

Good luck
this answer my problem..God bless you sir. I will just wait.. he actually told me the Phd will start by March 2020

If I understand you, you haven't gotten any response?, that doesn't mean he rejected you so far he didn't send a reject mail to you, he might be setting up your funding and all process. So if you haven't heard from him, just send an email, be polite, that you would appreciate his response so you can apply for visa on time. Is this for spring or fall?
thanks alot this really relief me... he has been responding to my questions regarding the article he sent to me but he has not talked about the phd although on the day of interview he told me he need to speak with their secretary about the funding

I did a PhD interview on 22nd of November, with high hope, I believed i was going to be selected because i have sent my CV and summary of my master's thesis to the group leader. After my PhD interview he told me he knew my supervisor and even told me to extend greetings to him he then continue by saying "i was the best applicant so far" so he told me to send my full master thesis to him and he will in return send me article related to the PhD programme i applied for.. I did and he sent me some article. Its been almost 2weeks now and i have not heard from him. Does this mean he deceived me and reject me? Why will you send article to student you won't pick for a phd? I am really confuse here.
