For those of you with a more creative side and looking for ways to sustain yourself whilst in the UK, it would be worth taking courses/learning how to gain skills to run the following business/self employment opportunities. This is wonderful! Congratulations Sienna, your wife has given you a beautiful baby girl! ![]() Dear God, who is like unto thee? No one! ![]() |
What is going on? ![]() These travel threads are becoming something else. Is the purpose of starting a thread to share information and genuinely seek the truth or to rant and rave and attack fellow posters. Remember, if other people did not post on NL there would be no thread, just one person talking to themselves! Think about it and afford each other some respect. Also, for those who seek to scam fellow Nigerian's or the British system remember that you get what you put out in this world and as for me I believe God fights the battles of the oppressed and victimised one way or another. Thank you Regards |
Wow. |
Please Nairalanders, There are many legitimate ways to enter the UK. Fake documents only cause shame and hard work for other Nigerians who wish to travel legitimaely. Respect yourselves so that others might respect us also. Regards |
Dear All, Many of the questions you have asked were answered recently in an update of the very first post written by me; if you go to page one. Some answer to questions on this page: Big Phil: phraoh:@Pharoah - Unfortunately, everything you do in an application that goes against the direct instruction of UKBA has the potential to result in a rejection. Something as minor as this however, is likely to be overlooked but is at the discrepancy of the officer. Just pray, I doubt very much this will result in a rejection but others should make sure they do not make the same mistake as some officers decide not to use their judgement and follow the rules STRICTLY. Skii:@skii - To answer your question, you should ask the people who say these comments directly. You might be surprised many have not even travelled as far as the airport let alone UK! However, many people who are here/have come here do experience disillusionment mainly because of two reasons: (1) High cost of living: whichever way you cut it, your percentage of income in UK goes to much more expenses than in Nigeria and people find it hard to save, (2) Lack of job opportunities: The recession and the coalition government's stance on immigration has reduced opportunities for employment for migrants to the UK and it is especially difficult to cinch the higher paying roles. This is why DegreeAngel has found it necessary to branch into helping graudtaes with employment and business ownership opportunities because many are struggling. Email director@degreeangel.co.uk for more info. Regards DegreeAngel UK Ltd www.degreeangel.co.uk |
Hi Guys, It has been so long! If you go to the very first post I have updated it with some answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs). Please let me know if you feel there is any question that gets asked repeatedly that is not listed there. This should help save time for everybody in the future. We have also launched a new programme for those of you in the UK looking for a career. The programme not only trains you free of charge in management and business support theory (certified by CMI, Chartered Manager's Institute, see www.managers.org.uk), but also provides paid and unpaid work experience. We need at least 20 candidates for our prospective employers this August/September. Upon completing the placement ranging from 2 weeks to 15 weeks, you may be offered a permananet role with the employer or we will forward you to other companies. For more details email me with a copy of your CV and job requirements at director@degreeangel.co.uk. Please excuse our website which is currently undergoing a revamp, but will hold more details by the beginning of August. Regards, DegreeAngel UK Ltd http://www.degreeangel.co.uk |
Thank you all for expressing your interest. Please send your CV for review, meeting location to be confirmed tomorrow via email. |
Thank you, we cannot sit back and allow ourselves to stumble! Indians help themselves, so do Jews and Japanese and a multitude of other races. We need to help ourselves, we complain of corrupt governments stopping us in Nigeria, if so then what stops us from doing so here? We have to change our mind set. For those of you who want to know more about the program I am running, the first one will pretty much be a pilot since I have no prior relationship with you. It will involve finding out your life goals, your constraints and your fears. Then we will start looking at your CV and how to get you from A to B. We will then start actioning this and it will consist of revamping your CVs, applying for some online applications i.e. Shell, PWC, JPMorgan, Network Rail, NHS etc. As well as cold calling some smaller companies that offer valuable experience, progression and a chance to grow. We will also get you ready for interviews, assessment centres and psychometric tests. This is obviously likely to take more than a day so we will play it by ear, but the reason I asked for emails in the first place was to find out the number of people interested so I will know the meeting room size needed and how many resources needed. I have set it at a weekday, to allow those who work on weekends the freedom to come to this session but if you are interested but the date does not suit you, please email me with a proposed new date. I will not post again regarding this until Friday when I will send details of the time and location. Regards |
@ Justwise Thank you so much. Married life is wonderful. I have finished the Master's and passed but am awaiting my certificate and transcript results now. Thank God. I hope those who settled in the UK are finding the adjustments okay. @Girl-Inc We all have to do our bit to set the pace, but if one persons sets the pace and no one decides to run the race with them it becomes a clear difference between a marathon and a mad man! lol. Thank you both for the welcome back and thank you all for participating in this thread, I know that we will all progress together! Dear Nairalanders, It has become quite apparent to me there is much difficulty for immigrants from Nigeria finding careers here in the UK. Many lose heart when they do not find a job a month after graduation. For Britons, the average graduate should expect it to take up to six months to find a career (a role that actually fits their skills and experience), although it can be less than than this for many. The economic downturn has not been favourable to a lot of Nigerian students here and the governments increasing bias/hesitance towards immigrants seems to have compounded this. Some students spend years in menial/unskilled jobs as a result of this. News from USA seems to be mixed. I believe part of this can be solved by dedication and improving employability. I will be holding career application workshops and SHL tutorials from the 15th of December for those who are already in the UK. Unfortunately, I know a lot of the graduate schemes are closing around this time and some have closed already but hopefully those that come will recognise there is always a way and use this to their advantage. The classes will be free of charge. I have also made a number of industry contacts to take on people for work experience to boost their chances of getting a job and I hope to make more connections based on the preferences of the participants. If you are interested please email ellaoku@gmail.com with the subject PROGRESS WORKSHOP. I am not really focussing so much on getting Nigerian students to come to the UK any more (my website is down) as there is a real need, I believe, to make sure for those who intend to stay that they have something worth coming to first. Also if you own or are thinking of starting up a business please email me as to your staffing and/or funding needs with the subject BUSINESS RESOURCE. I'd also be interested to hear what people think about the job market in the UK for them. Thank you. |
Wow. I remember when this page was thread was merely a few pages, now it looks like a book! Firstly, I must apologise profusely for my absence on Nairaland, I have been battling my own Master's degree and got married whilst helping some students here in the UK who have finished their Bachelor's degrees into jobs. I am glad that so many of you have still kept up this thread and in the spirit of brother(sister)hood have done so with out personal gain. I applaud you all. I must give my own warnings as a concerned sister at the difficulty in finding careers here in the UK for some students. The average graduate should expect it to take up to six months to find a career (a role that actually fits their skills and experience), however exceptional students should find their careers in less time than this. The economic downturn has not been favourable to a lot of Nigerian students here and the governments increasing bias/hesitance towards immigrants seems to have compounded this. Unfortunately, my colleagues on the other side of the pond (USA), seem to iterate the same thoughts. I will be holding application workshops and SHL tutorials from the 15th of December for those who are already in the UK. Unfortunately, I know a lot of the graduate schemes are closing around this time and some have closed already but hopefully those that come will recognise there is always a way and use this to their advantage. @Just wise - Thanks it is good to be back although admittedly I am still very busy and ma take time replying for now so thanks for your posting consistency. I enjoyed Christmas, but I worked almost throughout that period on my masters' assignments and replying to email enquiries for DegreeAngel. How was your break? What's new with you? Bayonero:Bayo, I honestly cannot answer that question for you. If you feel the school is just a victim of its leniency and will soon be removed from the list you can wait, but if you cannot wait or feel the school is not for you at all then try your best to speak to everyone you can until someone says yes. Remember the first person you get through to is often the lowest ranking in that department, beg or demand to speak to their supervisor, and then their supervisor and then theirs. If you are not able to get through to them I can assist you if you email me your details and authority to call on your behalf. I am based in London. Alternatively just apply for the visa, lose the visa application money when you are rejected and then ask them for your money back. It is likely that even then they might remove administration fees, speak to them about this before you apply for the visa. oyewsmt:oyewsmt - Justwise has advised you correctly so you should apply with that in mind if you have held this full amount of money for at least 28 days. The money you have converted into pounds is roughly £10,000, though you should base your estimates on www.oanda.com exchange rates for the day you are ready to apply (the date of the bank account statement printout), which should be written on the statement with the conversion amount. I don't know your details but if you are choosing an institute in UK the money (the £10,000), should be the amount of maintenance fees and tuition fees not yet paid, as a general rule the only maintenance fees paid that UKBA really recognises are accommodation fees (more specifically those paid for halls of residence/ avoid paying for private accommodation and forget about using family accommodation as a means of escaping this: unless perhaps it is your parent/legal guardian which is unlikely if you need a visa to enter UK). So if the £10,000 is what you have not paid then that is fine. All the best! |
Hi Guys, Sorry for my period of absence. I have been very busy with a lot of Nairaland requests sent by email and so many other things. After reviewing the past three pages of comments I see we have some more good news from Nairalanders who have successfully gained a UK Visa after listening to the advice on this forum, I am glad this thread showed you the way. I also see there are quite a number of questions being asked here that have already been answered elsewhere on the thread, so before asking a question, it might be a good idea to read through the thread for clarity. I appreciate the thread has become quite long now with this popularity and will try to provide a summary document or link in due course. Thank you very much to our active posters and advisors who in my absence continue to provide sound and thoughtful advice. Looking at justwise and Flekan's advice in particular, I don't need to answer any of the new questions as those answers are good enough to help the latest enquirers. I will address at this point two issues: 1. Suspended schools 2. A new change in the visa letter 1. Suspended schools Bayonero:This is one of the few dangers of applying to a UK school. Those who apply with you may not have sincere intentions. Stricter regulations on universities mean that if students do not attend courses they are supposed to inform UKBA. If they do not they may be suspended. This is the likely cause of the above poster's school and because others were not honest it now affects him. It is important to note that after UKBA investigations, a number of colleges will be removed from this list/suspension and if your course date has not passed you may continue with the application, if it has lapsed they are likely to issue you a new visa letter, with an extension date (the investigation by UKBA should take no more than 6 weeks ordinarily). However for a few institutes, this will not happen and you will need to go elsewhere or perhaps you can't wait that long anyway. Getting your money back can be a problem. According to contract, is likely you agreed to a refund only in the case of visa refusal. If you cannot convince them to return the money like Justwise advised (especially if it is before the 6 weeks and they are hoping the suspension is temporary), then your only option may be to get the visa rejection, it is cheaper than paying for a lawyer! Bear in mind many genuine universities may wind up on this list due to loyalties to their students and is not a reflection of their genuinity as a school but rather their leniency becoming their weakness to the UKBA. As a lecturer who has bonded with their students and knows their student is experiencing financial difficulty or has commitments back home for instance what do you do when the student misses lectures for part-time work? Report him to the UKBA or hope he will soon return to class and a week or two will make no difference? The best answer is to report them for the sake of other students, but some lecturers may feel their loyalty to that student prevents them from doing so. Just to emphasise how tragic this is; one of my preferred universities has wound up on this list "Rayat London" and it is quite a shame as they teach exceedingly well and make special efforts to find part-time and full-time work for their students. It is likely they will be removed from the list - but nothing is certain. I do not agree with the poster's institute holding his money whilst suspended and wish all those who are experiencing such the best of luck. 2. A new change in the visa letter According to the UKBA "From 22 February 2010, any student who applies by post or at one of our public enquiry offices, to study in the UK under Tier 4 of the points-based system must possess a confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) from their prospective sponsor. You will not be able to apply under Tier 4 using a visa letter from that date, even if the visa letter was issued before 22 February 2010. Until 21 February 2010, you can continue to apply under Tier 4 using a visa letter, even if your course of study will start after 22 February 2010. " "The procedure for sponsoring students under Tier 4 of the points-based system will change next month, when phase 4 of Tier 4 begins. From 22 February 2010, visa letters will be obsolete. Tier 4 sponsors will need to use our sponsorship management system to issue confirmations of acceptance for studies (CASs) to all potential students, whether they are applying from inside or outside the UK. From the same date, we will refuse any student applications under Tier 4 that do not contain a CAS number. If you issue a visa letter before 22 February to a student who intends to apply to us on or after that date, you must also issue them with a CAS. If a student has used a CAS in their application to us, their sponsor must use the sponsorship management system to report on that student in any of the circumstances listed on the Reporting page of this website. For more information about Tier 4 sponsors' responsibilities, download the Tier 4 sponsor guidance from the right side of this page. For more information about the implementation of Tier 4, download the Tier 4 implementation plan from the right side of this page." The good news is this means applications should be quicker with a sort of electronic as opposed to paper visa letter. But it will also mean this system is used to report individual students that disobey UKBA rules faster, so remain vigilant in your compliance to rules. There are also almost always hiccups with new system implementations especially as we move from one system to the next. DegreeAngel UK Ltd www.degreeangel.co.uk |
@lad1000 - Just make sure the letter is fully comprehensive of why the mistake was made (or who by), then talk about other records that do show your correct date of birth and state that these documents all belong to you. If you are unsure seek legal advice and if any fraud was at play then please don't bother applying with this it will cause a possible ten year ban for applying to UK for any visa. @monixl - Help with what? You need a flight ticket, get a police check before you go (to help with some jobs), stick to your luggage allowance on flight and get padlocks for checked in luggage, don't carry any food (animals, plants etc) or liquids, get some pounds before you come Naira is not recognised here, don't put cash in your suitcase (put it in your hand luggage and declare it), don't carry any artefacts, get warm clothes, make sure you phone line is unblocked and roamed (then get a chip here in UK ASAP), contact hostels for pre-booking or atleast print a list of hostels that have accommodation at the time you need if you have not already paid for accommodation, get your CV ready for part-time work. Stay tuned to www.degreeangel.co.uk, for FREE courses on employment, study assistance in UK (how to get a 1st Class), and exploring your entrepreneurial side whilst keeping to the restrictions set by the UKBA. |
Hi cconcept there is nothing wrong with the phone, I just called you using our office lines. But if you have any problems getting through to me personally by phone, you have my email address. Sometimes if my staff are all tied up giving training sessions or negotiating with universities on tuition fees or helping distressed students, the lines will be diverted to our answering machine so you may leave a message and we will get back to you. Generally, the best times to call are between 11am and 3pm (Monday - Sunday) for general enquiries, sometimes you can call before or after these times and still get through to us. Each of our candidates have their own dedicated consultant with direct mobile phone access (often myself), so you can even call evenings and weekends without trouble. These numbers are only given to candidates who have chosen us to help them in their applications, our service is normally FREE, so the candidate service starts when you decide you are ready to apply to university. Here is the number again: Dial the number as +44207 148 7926 or 0044207 148 7926 www.degreeangel.co.uk |
monixl:Congrats and welcome to UK, yes it is chilly right now. Wear layers of clothing and if possible purchase a coat, the shock of the weather at this time might be a bit much. Regards |
That's okay monixl, forget about it. ![]() |
Hello guys! Just to tremind you that this thread has nothing to do with the anything other than applying to study in the UK on tier 4 of the New PBS system. Anyone who wants to study elsewhere, will probably be looking on another thread already so please don't post adverts on other countries here. The thread contributors are trying to help those who want to study in the UK. If you really need attention start your own thread, this thread is already a little long for people to read through from beginning to end, and you wont be helping. ![]() Thank you DegreeAngel UK Ltd |
Guys, please avoid all deception when applying for visas, and for thos of you in the UK already obey the laws and don't overstay: [flash=200,200] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfjRKkgVlZI[/flash] |
If it is temporary accommodation however, you can try hostels, but they are not always safe depending on the area you choose. Try contacting your university to ask them about hostels that are safe/recommended. Otherwise here is another link: http://www.studentaccommodation.org/hostels_united_kingdom_list_uk.asp Be careful to check the currency type. |
Hi monixl - it depends on where you want to stay, please remember if gas, electricity and water are not included (i.e. bills not included), you might need to add £1,500 per year on to the rent, also take into account transport costs which could range from £0 to £1,500 peryear depending on distance from school and transport links: www.studentpad.co.uk www.accommodationforstudents.com Those two links are for students only. You can also try the following for private landlords who post their own property (a few agents also): www.loot.com www.gumtree.com www.rightmove.co.uk WARNING - Gumtree is free to post on, and there are a lot of scammer who will even put photographs there, I advise you not to pay for anything until you are given the keys at the door, or unless you are using an accredited and registered agency. Loot charges for a lot of its advert but because they are landlords advertising direct it may be cheaper than going through an agency - they may also be more open to negotiation. Rightmove is likely to be expensive rentals because fo agent fees (virtually no private landlords advertise here). But possibly safer to use agents if you are paying from outside UK. Good luck! www.degreeangel.co.uk |
ella1:Hi ella1 - The best answer I can give you is: 'it depends'. ![]() Okay here is why: 1. A lot of people on Nairaland have testified to VI having a faster response time. However, as I am sure most of these people have not tried Ikeja (you only use one, unless you are reapplying), it might not mean it is necessarily the fastest. 2. I have most of my students to be to Ikeja as not one of my students has had to wait greater than 10 working days to get an outcome when using this service so far. However, because I really help them to create an airtight application, this may be the reason for a fast turnaround instead of the actual center. 3. The BHC in Lagos used to process applications made through the VFS offices in Ikeja and VI, but now the BHC in Abuja does, adding an extra two working days to transfer documents across the country (minimum), so it might be better to apply in Abuja. However, since Ibadan applications an the whole of Abuja is being processed there also it might not necessarily be the fastest. So my answer is, I prefer Ikeja, but anyone you decide on should be fine if your application is airtight, and if you apply on time. If you are approaching your enrollment deadline speak to your university about an extension. Hope this helps! DegreeAngel UK Limited |

ghafleks:I don't understand you ghafleks the advice I gave you was based on what I thought was your personal account. Only your parents, a legal guardian or official finanical sponsor can sponsor you, if it is not even the same company or whoever sponsoring you, I doubt you can use it in an appeal, you wmay need to apply again. If you are not able to articulate your situation properly on Nairaland (perhaps you feel restricted), you may receive the wrong information based on misunderstanding, go and see a UK immigration lawyer if it is regarding an appeal and too personal for you to talk about CLEARLY here. It will be a better use of your time and efforts than looking for sound advice based on incoomplete information. |
Miss Dreamer Your aspirations: What do you want? Where do you see yourself in 10 years time? She answers: "I just need to be working anywhere, and contibuting to my family, perhaps I will come back and work in a bank, I should hopefully be married by then too!" What qualifications do you have: She answers: "WAEC with C6 in English, then a 2.2. in Business Education, I have completed my NYSC" What is your age? She answers: "26" My advice is to really think about your future especially as you are starting this off indebted to others. Lets push aside the banking for a second and concentrate on your teaching for now we can help you apply to Huddersfield University which is in your budget for a PGCE and when you qualifiy with NQT you will earn on average £25,000, or £30,000 if you work in London. That should at least get your debts out of the way, then you can even do a part-time MSc whilst working fulltime (via evening courses) in Finance or something else if you still beleive you want to work as a banker. You can even do that at a top 5 university - you will be able to afford it and achieve your dreams. www.degreeangel.co.uk |
Which Universities are Best?? It really depends on your pocket and your dreams. Here are two examples of two types of candidates I have come across and the options I have put forward to them: Candididate 1: Mr Money is no problem (Budget N7.5million/£30,000 per annum) Candididate 2: Miss Dreamer (Budget N2.5million/£10,000 for one year after borrowing from parents, co-operatives, aunties, uncles and friends) Mr Money is no problem Your aspirations: What do you want? Where do you see yourself in 10 years time? He answers: "Working in an Investment Bank in USA as a trader: What qualifications do you have: He answes: "Cambridge A-Levels all at A grade in Maths, Physics and English" What is your age? He answers: "17" My advice, either study economics, maths related subjects or engineering at a top university i.e. Oxbridge, UCL, LSE, or Imperial in particular. |
cconcept:@Cconcept - it depend on what you have and the money you have. If you want the best value for money and your bank account is flowing with £30,000 at least (N7.5 million untouched). The best for good careers are those ranked in the Guardian league tables as top 10 universities year on year. Most specifically though (not in order): Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, LSE and Imperial. graduating from these places mean you are ALMOST guaranteed a job on completion. However, many students who don't go to such universities still do well and of course my focus here is on international students. For its price, Lon Met offers good value for money especially if you are using its courses as a stepping stone but it also depends on your course or goals. There are universities that are ranked the same and would cost less because of their lower tuition fees or being outside London. Huddersfield university for example you would only need to show £5,400 in maintenance fees for this university and it is growing it offers its students lots of assistance on obtaining employement or mapping out careers. |
