Did you ever wonder where the term 'she's got a PhD in fashion', came from? Cool. London has some of the best fashion, arts and related genres in the world. Nigerians are obviously extremely creative, but sometimes the resources and technical skills are not within reach. So many people have been asking me for non-traditional courses relating to media, fashion and arts. I have quite a few universities who offer these courses - one of which is the best fashion university in the UK (probably the world), they are offering a variety or BA/BSc's, MA/MSc's and even PhD's in the following:

    * Acting and Directing
    * Animation
    * Art and Design
    * Architecture, Artefact and Spatial Design
    * Beauty Therapy
    * Fashion magazines Business, Marketing and Creative Enterprise (which includes Enterprise Management, Floral
       Design, Marketing and Advertising AND Public Relations)
    * Conservation
    * Cosmetic Science
    * Curation and Criticism
    * Digital (Digital Arts, Digital Arts Online, Digital Media, Games Design AND Interactive Multimedia)
    * Fashion
    * Film and Theatre
    * Media
    * Photography
    * Printing and Publishing
    * Research (i.e. PhD)
    * Retail
    * Travel and Tourism

Prices vary and I will be accepting applications for them shortly, to find out more about this and other opportunities contact me on director@degreeangel.co.uk. To sign up to the regular newsletter, simply enter 'subscribe' in the subject box.

HND graduates and students!

Are you afraid of the varying degrees of discrimination encountered by your predecessors?

There are opportunities for HND graduates, no doubt.

But what if you want to change to a BSc?

Do you have to study for four more years!!!

NOPE!

With a one year top-up in the UK (or 18 months depending on your modules - maximum), you can convert your HND into a BSc from a reputable British university!

It is not just about the name though, you will be trained thoroughly to make up for gaps in knowledge by experts and looked at employers as a credit for your wide understanding.

Want to know more?

Check out DegreeAngel UK Ltd. Don't worry if your finances seem too small, we will let you know the opportunities available for you - including financial assistance (sponsorship and loans).

Remember I am coming in May, so stay tuned to my website for more details, you can also email me to receive automatic updates of my events (free), sponsorship opportunities, loans, new courses, discounted fees, etc.

Good, please keep it up! I should have added shorter length of time there too i.e. no strike. But not every Nigerian uni strikes anyway.

Education / Re: Msc Or Marriage by ell77(f): 2:19pm On Apr 13, 2009
lol. Some interesting responses.

I know a woman who married and her husband paid for her to come and study in UK, and then she came back to Nigeria - there are no problems. It really boils down to trust.

He has every right to voice his opinion, he has chosen to spend the rest of his life with you. If he is adamant that it is one or the other you guys need to look at your relationship very carefully.

I have just thought about it from a man's perspective. If I was working in Nigeria and my husband said lets get married, but as soon as we marry I am traveling abroad to study for 2 years, I would probably say "no way" (but that is just me). Perhaps, I would question how serious he was about me in the first place, and why he had never done his MSc all this time.

I am just trying to put myself in his shoes, as up until now I was only putting myself in your shoes. Why not do a shorter course, or ask him if he will be able to travel with you? Is his job really that great. Two years is a long time to postpone a wedding and if you want to find another partner abroad - the grass is not always greener. If you had not done an undergrad I would say he was selfish (personal opinion all women should have the chance to do undergrad), but what course do you want to study and how is the course going to help your plans?

Think wisely. Love is precious.

1honeybee:

I chose the course myself actually and I was really excited when I started in september but I just find it a bit difficult than I expected. I dont think i can actually drop out of the course because I do love it. I was begining to think its career path is not as flexible as i thought , I chose the course for the flexibility and integration into other field.

Thanks for the information/advise. I think i just need to put in more work now.

Did you ever work in a labthough? i knw they are boring, I've visited some, I just want to know what its like.

Did you do molecular biology as part of your module?
Its like arabic to me, I've got no idea what the module is all about.

Yes molecular biology is very difficult to begin with, but once you understand it everything clicks in terms of understanding the theory. I hated it at first but then ended up enjoying it later. My lab speciality in my final year was even human genetics, working with PCR was sooo difficult and I had to understand molecular biology to get a handle of it, but I got to meet the patients I was testing the blood samples for and interview them about their genetic disorder (haemochromatosis) so it was still very interesting.

The variety of biomedical science was something I loved though. I also liked neuroscience and immunology which I specialised in, with my final year choices. I didn't fancy histology much - I could not really recognise what i saw in the microscope and the lectures bored me.

Yes, the lab can be a bit boring. It can be a series of monotonous movements all day long, but these can be punctuated by moments of "eureka" and "thank God it actually went according to plan!".

Depending on what you like this may be perfect for you and it also depends on who is in your lab and if you have a real interest in what you are doing. What always made things interesting for me was context, when you know the person behind the blood sample (or other sample) and understand the importance and relevance - maybe even met the person it makes things worthwhile.

After my degree I never worked in the lab in the UK until i came to Nigeria to do NYSC and I was posted to NAFDAC! Funnily enough I was even working in the food lab - far different to what I studied but I learned as I went along!

Explore the profession more and plan ahead as to which path you would like. It really can be a great profession if you give it a chance (just like honeybee said develop a special likeness in an area) - my purpose in life has led me elsewhere but i don't regret doing the course for one day - very interesting and it developed me as a person. When it comes to maths, biology, physics, computing, teamwork, individual work, English; I usually excel - and can give a lot of this credit to this course.

Good luck!

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Qualified Biomedical Scientist/ Trainee by ell77(f): 1:52am On Apr 13, 2009
Yes the course is very difficult. Try and keep focused and don't allow for any distractions.

I will be honest with you, outside of hospitals, most people will struggle to understand the course so you need to do well in it to succeed. In my uni people generally respected our course and said it was harder than medicine because we were expected to know everything the medics knew and also know what's cooking in the lab!

In the end i never practiced in the lab as I found it boring, but to each their own anyway, I still rate anyone who does the course.

Did you choose the course or it was the only choice you had? You seem very hesitant, sorry to pry, I just remember like 50% of my class wanted to do something else and many dropped out. But some who didn't like it at first on the other hand and carried on to the end now enjoy great salaries, it is quite strange how life plays itself out, I guess.

If you don't have any other option, why consider dropping out? undecided

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Qualified Biomedical Scientist/ Trainee by ell77(f): 1:34am On Apr 13, 2009
Yes you can work in hospitals or pharmaceutical companies. You can work in the lab or as a marketer selling pharmaceutical and health care products including artificial limbs! (ok, I know that last bit is not a selling point but hey!)

You can work for firms who need specialist health care knowledge and combine it with another field.For example here they often need life science graduates for financial services companies to help them when analysing healthcare companies.

You can be a medical writer.

There are a variety of things you can do here in UK, not certain if the field is as well acknowledged in Nigeria, but you can carve your own path (maybe even your own business?).

You can specialise in microbiology and various other fields or be a generalist.

You can further your studies and convert to something like environmental science and work for environment consultancies (who also help oil companies - maybe even get recruited by oil company). Or a toxicologist which is similar but more to do with hazards.

You can be a forensic scientist with further education (do you watch CSI?).

Also there are the jobs that take any field like banking etc.

You can teach!

But what is your career aim?

I would be very grateful.

Politics / Re: When Will Nigeria Be Better? by ell77(f): 12:44am On Apr 13, 2009
Yes Nigeria will be better. I once read an article saying the trouble with Nigeria is Nigerians. With all the resources, intelligence, talent and beauty in the world, our country is not a fraction of what it is supposed to be.

It starts with good intentions and ends with hard work. If you want Nigeria to be better, do something to make it better.
Education / Re: Msc Or Marriage by ell77(f): 3:32pm On Apr 11, 2009
OK if you are not interested in something, it is likely to end up a failure, so the cosmetics outfit may not work (I am assuming he does not ordinarily dictate your future, and is simply worried about how this will affect your relationship). Since he obviously is happy for you to work and it is just distance that worries him you have to approach this delicately. Even though I am an educational consultant, I can understand why someone would choose to keep a job over MSc if it was a good one.

But marriage is all about compromise.

We used to live in a world where one person could look after a family of five. But nowadays even a family of three may struggle with both parents employed.

It will be easier for you to do your MSc now whilst you have less responsibilities i.e. no kids. Also the younger you are the easier it is getting back into academic life.

Furthering your studies is not only good for you, it is good for your children and your husband.

God forbid if anything were to happen to your husband or his job how would the two of you cope.

You are supposed to work as a team, and even if you choose to remain unemployed after doing the MSc and become a housewife, doing the MSc might help you in times of trouble to apply for jobs, or even set up your own business depending on the course.

Long distance relationships are hard.

Marriage is hard.

Add the two together and you have 'mission ALMOST impossible'.

So I can understand his reservations.

But some people still do it. So if you can convince him of the benefits and show him how strong your relationship is I think you should do the MSc and still get married.

Every holiday you can see each other, if you are in Nigeria for your MSc, maybe even every weekend.

It is not easy to find someone worth spending the rest of your life with, so I would not want you to sacrifice that.

He may just be afraid and need your reassurance.

Try to speak about it calmly and thoughtfully.

A good idea is to ask him exactly what is concerns are and listen without arguing or objecting.

Understanding and communication are the two great cornerstones of any relationship and need to be nurtured for your relationship to go anywhere in the first place.

I hope this helps, let me know what you decide ok?

wink
