BABABABA: Thanks, for your encouraging words, happy to be of service. I am already registered in UK. Nigeria's registration process is not as transparent as it is in the UK. But I have met a lawyer from this forum whom I believe is quite honest and will probably be using his service. But before I use him, I have to obtain an office in Nigeria which I am still searching for through agents. Any recommendations nairaland? Sorry - off topic. |

cluster: Okay. Medicine is very competitive and often requires interviews to obtain offer letters even for international students, though exceptions may apply. Most Marketing courses should not require an interview unless your personal statement makes them suspect your communication/English skills may not be up to scratch, but they want to give you a chance (i.e. poor grammar, vocabulary, spelling etc). Interview for a marketing MSc in this case may be conducted over the phone and is unlikely to involve a face to face interview. But face to face interviews with international students often happens with medicine applicants. Here is the basic step by step: 1. Start off with a written application to the university. For an undergraduate degree like medicine, this is often done through UCAS with early deadlines. See http://www.ucas.ac.uk for more information. But some universities may accept direct undergraduate applications for international students only. For masters courses universities accept direct applications. 2. Once you have received and interview letter (if applicable), then passed the interview (for medicine it will likely be quite rigorous), you may be given a conditional offer letter. This conditional offer letter depends on any exam results not yet available and/or paying part of the tuition fee. 3. Once you have filled whatever requirements were listed in the conditional offer letter you will receive an UNconditional offer letter that you are supposed to respond to confirming your acceptance of their offer (often an attached slip/letter). 4. You will then be sent your visa letter. It is the visa letter and the supporting documents listed in the visa letter (basically the things they said were used to give you the offer e.g. WAEC, transcript etc - this varies), along with your bank statements for the other PBS points (which you appear to be informed about) that you then use to apply to the UKBA via the VFS. Hope that helps. Good luck. Regards, DegreeAngel UK Ltd |

BABABABA: @Babababa - It is not my personal opinion that it will affect your application. However, I have never advised any of my applicants to touch the money until they receive their visa, so I have not personally witnessed, the effects of withdrawing money - their be no effects or the effect could be bad. Since your sponsor only needs it for four days, why doesn't he/she wait until you get your visa? He has come this far with you. To wait two weeks should not be so much as he/she has already waited 28 days. If it is urgent though, I suppose you don't have a choice, its his money not yours. My own opinion is that it will not affect your visa, but this is based on opinion not on fact. There have been no formal warnings by UKBA not to withdraw money - however, the money is supposed to be for the purpose of your studies. Technically you have met criteria, the only way they can reject you, is if they doubt your genuineness - but under this new system, I believe you can contest this was an unfair excuse as you indeed met criteria they laid out. Hope that has been helpful, print your statement and at least apply before any necessary withdrawals. All the best! |

@Dirac Ahh. So the money in your parents account equals the full year's tuition fee (apart from the £4,000 already paid) + the maintenance fee? If so then you can use their account to apply, just make sure you also have that receipt or that it has been printed as having paid £4000 on your visa letter. I understand the confusion because of this written on UKBA website: Personal bank or building society statements covering a 28-day period ending no more than one month before the date of your application Your personal bank or building society statements should show: * your name, or the name of the child's parent(s) or legal guardian(s) if applicable in the case of a child student; * the account number; * the date of the statement; * the financial institution's name and logo; and * the amount of money available. You can use bank statements that are for a specific purpose (also known as 'ad hoc') as evidence, as long as: * they include all of the information above; and * they are printed on paper with the letterhead of the bank. You cannot use mini-statements from cash machines (ATMs) as evidence. You can use electronic bank statements from an online account if they include all the information above. Each electronic bank statement should be stamped by the official stamp of the bank on every page of the statement. If you want to use a joint account as proof of your money, you must be named on the account along with at least one other person. HOWEVER THIS WAS THE UPDATE THEY IMPLEMENTED: What changes are you making? Today we are announcing changes to the maintenance rules to resolve some of the issues that Universities have alerted us to. From 21 August we will allow all students to use a bank account in their parent’s name to evidence that they meet the maintenance requirement. We plan to publish an update to the guidance on 21 August with further details. We are changing the maintenance requirements under Tier 4 to allow all students of any age to use a bank account in their parent’s name to evidence that they meet the maintenance requirement. Previously we only allowed students applying under the child student route, up to the age of 18 to use their parent’s bank account to evidence that they meet the maintenance requirement. All the best! |

Dirac: @Dirac - I am afraid you must wait until both all amounts have been held for a minimum of 28 days in your account. One option will be to contact your university and ask for an extension, explain to them you sent the money as a commitment and your dream is to study there but, because of your circumstance (be honest), you will probably not be able to make it for that date. Speak to enough people until you get someone who will help you, if they so "We do not that - it is against policy", then ask them "okay who deals with policy, since I know you are only trying to do the right thing perhaps if I speak to them things can be changed". I have helped my students with such universities who have strict policies. All the best okay! cluster: @Cluster Well, if you are fully knowledgeable about the PBS system, then that makes life much easier for you. But the way you apply to a university really differs from university to university, especially between BSc and MSc. What will really help me answer your question more thoroughly is if you give me details of exactly what it is you are interested in in terms of course and perhaps career if your not sure of the course. Let me know your background also - then I can give you a step by step plan. jossy26:@jossy Sorry for the delay, today has been very busy. Okay I believe funkybaby has kindly answered you in another forum so there is little help I need to give you. What I will say is that peoples supporting documents are not based on a general list per se. Apart from the visa letter and financial statements, the most necessary documents are defined by the UKBA as those documents the university used in selecting you. Some add transcripts because on their visa letter it implies the university looked at that, some add SSCE, cos this was implied on their visa letter. You must look at your visa letter to gauge which documents you need, but by and large most people have used SSCE as well as university results, so I imagine you will need this. As you are already working on this - good luck. If you have enough time, I am sure you will be successful. BABABABA: That's okay! justwise: Ditto! Thank you everyone for your contribution to these cases it is really heart warming to know some of us still look after our fellow man. |

erico2k2: @Erico - thank you for this point, it is a very important one. The a landlord can only ask for one month deposit by law but may ask for any amount in 'advance rent' - this is less regulated. One month is more common for those who have full-time jobs or a guarantor. However, if a landlord perceives risk of default i.e. those on benefits or those without regular employment such as students. It is not uncommon for them to ask for 6 months deposit in advance, it is their choice to do so, you may choose another property if you are not interested. This seems to happen more to foreign students compared to home students - I guess it is an unfortunate perceived bias of them being more able to run away (and is not a scam in the sense of being illegal but is quite unfair). To me, it is not advisable to pay this amount if you can find a landlord elsewhere who is more reasonable, but some people are forced to accept. Of course there have been some cases of litigation where landlords collected 6 months advance rent and the court decided that this was illegally being used as a deposit with a false name as 'advance rent'. But you will find the number of said cases are rare. It is very important to work out terminology when reading contracts - I suggest all new students go to their international advisors at their universities for help with contracts on arrival. This link from a university shows what has been happening but what that university may provide to assist those being asked for 6 months in advance rent. Check if yours can do the same: http://www.plymouth.ac.uk/pages/view.asp?page=18633 funkybaby: Okay that's fine - I don't believe we are arguing, we are merely offering opinions for the same goal - to help this prospective student. I am happy to see caring Nigerian's like you, you need to keep up the good work - i have pretty much agreed with every opinion or thought you have put forward so far. The reason I put forth my own opinion is the fact that the applicant does not have time to take your option and if he took the time, he would be rejected on the basis of applying too late (it will take time to confirm payments and contract). Many visiting visas receive rejection because of no accommodation and it is possible this happened with student visas under the old scheme too - but the point I am trying to get across is it is not necessary under this new scheme. I understand your points and the old scheme was very subjective so we all were rushing to tick boxes we were not sure existed or not as you could be rejected over anything - but that was the whole point of PBS. At the beginning of PBS perhaps some people were rejected for not having accommodation even if they had the required fees - I have not personally witnessed this in the PBS period, but I believe you that it might have happened since you said so: this is a mistake on the part of the BHC then and an administrative review would have sorted that out. Probably more likely in the beginning stages of the new system as everyone was still thinking with the old system in mind, this is less likely now as the new process is now more familiar to them. My latest student got his visa after 11 working days from Ikeja, he did not have accommodation even though his university provides accommodation (he didn't get halls of residence because the waiting list for accommodation linked to his university had started from May and he started his application in September), he left that space blank. But had all the money needed to cover him, I am currently searching for private accommodation for him. He will take this accommodation list to his university for further advice and a letter supporting his studies here. |

I am writing from my phone. So pls excuse writing. on arrival he can stay at a hotel or a backpackers hostel. not all unis have halls of residence and those that do cannot give to all. most give international students pref but not all. some require deposit some holding fee some more. the issue is does ukba require it. the answer is NO. i can give example of successful student visas that have not put uk accom. would make his stay easier if he had halls - but is not needed for visa. |

funkybaby: justwise: @Funky Baby & justwise - Again, thank you for your contribution - This is a good opinion, worked out with common sense. But the UKBA does not operate like this. Many have been given student visas without accommodation in UK. His school does not own/offer halls of residence (hostel) to him (not every school does) so he cannot get the easiest option. If he wanted to pay for accommodation before leaving, the lowest deposit accepted in UK is a months rent as deposit plus the first months rent in advance i.e. two months. This comes up to on average £400-£800 for just a room shared in a house with others, lets not talk about him getting his own accommodation. Also for private accommodation - unless you can provide a guarantor or are working full-time, most private landlords take it as a given you must produce 6 months deposit i.e. £1200 - £2400 on average for one room shared in a house with others. There are exceptions to this, but these cases are rare. I doubt he can get this. There are currently scam artists in UK who will advertise property and will collect a deposit without you meeting them, only for you to find out, they do not even own the property. His best way of avoiding this is either getting halls of residence - which isn't an option for him, or by getting the accommodation and paying for it with a CONTRACT on arrival to UK. Example: http://forums.gumtree.com/about158808.html&highlight= So he cannot have accommodation before coming to UK. UKBA does not require it. If he has money in his maintenance amount required by UKBA, part of this will be used to pay for accommodation. Which if enough should not take him long to move into a place in the region he goes to school. Most house owners right now are desperate to fill empty rooms, as they find they can't sell their home. Also the process of verifying accommodation and receiving proof of this accommodation by mail/courier would take more time which he does not own. |

BABABABA: You do not need to show a UK address. The UK recognises paying for accommodation before you move in does not always seem favourable. Also if you pay for accommodation and are rejected a visa it is unlikely you can receive funds back. So don't pay for accommodation, you may leave the UK contact address blank. I believbe that is part of the guidelines. That is okay. |

BABABABA: Yes your bank statement and a letter from the bank confirming this is your account are all you need to prove your maintenance and tuition fees (some successfully omit the latter). Some of the major exceptions being: - If you paid some of your course fees and this is not highlighted in the visa letter you will need a receipt for this. - If some of the money is from parents your will need their account details also. - If you are receiving a loan from your bank or an international organization you will need official letter etc for this also. |

i-toro: @i-Toro: Then you don't have a problem, one week is perfectly reasonhable to get your things together. But if you are still uncertain, how about taking your annual eave before handing in your notice? Or asking your employer for one year sabattical? All the best - either way, you are coming to UK! b.iriah: @ b.iriah : Sorry to he hear this. Your rejection was, however to be expected. There are really only two criteria: 1. Having the offer and eveidence to support this. 2. Having the money asked for and evidence to supprt this. It is not a case of they will just 'allow you' - even if you were N100 out due to currency fluctuations they have the RIGHT to reject you let alone £8,000. That's roughly N2 million Naira. They are not desperate for you to come to UK. They make thier money from your visa application anyway! You need the full maintenance fee for the year and tuition fee in your account or the acount of your parents. Your uncle does not count, unless he is your legal guardian i.e. you are an orphan and he has legally adopted you. Apply again if your course has not yet begun (you cannot do administrative review as the fault was on your part) and is still at least a month away but not more than 6 months away i.e. the rare November courses, and larger number of January, February, March and April courses. You must have the full money in your account for 28 days since it is a new application and as soon as you have this you must apply within a month of the balance statement. You must apply as if you had made no previous application i.e. you need a new visa letter if the date has changed and you must submit all supporting documents again. Hope this helps? All the best. dayonuel: @dayonel - you have two options: 1. Try to enter the UK with your visa for the course hoping you will not be asked for your visa letter at entry and that the school was strictly against writing visa letters with longer extension because of the UKBA but will accept you if you arrive. You can also change your school with your visa although the process is long, so maybe if you ask them straight up if they would accept you if you entered the school without the written extension you will find that this is okay. TWO MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH THAT IS: you could be reufsed at entry and will have lost your flight money without even leaving the airport or if by some chance you escape the entry officer and enter and your school does not let you in you could be seen as staying illegally as your school may report to the UKBA that you are in UK but not in their school! You can see why this option is not really recommendable although for some people in certain circumstances it may be ok. 2. Apply to your school again for January intake now you should have had money in your account for close to 28days by now so when you receive the letter apply for a new visa for January, this will leave you plenty of time. You can't use the visa you have already. You will only have lost the previous visa fee. But N150k for flight ticket is not near the visa fee is it?! Once you have that visa you can enter the UK up to one month before your course starts i.e. December. |

chic2pimp: Lol. It was an exaggeration. Just to let you know how many Nigerian women are biased in connection to Nigerian men. Not all - but many! I am telling you my experience, yours can be different - it does not have to be the same. I have seen Ghanaians and Nigerians fighting each other and Nigerian women disgrace the Ghanaian men based on stereotypes even though in front of their eyes they can see their stereotypes are not true. Example of Jamaican girl(JL), Nigerian Girl (NG) and Nigerian man(NM) dialogue I witnessed: JL: "Why is it many Nigerian date Jamaicans cos of passports - but Ghanaian African are okay - they are much better". NM: "You are probably with Ghanaian cos you can't get a Nigerian - everyone knows they are second rate Nigerian wannabe's - Nigerians are more successful." JL: "That's not true, my Ghanaian boyfriend, is caring, intelligent and works in a Big 4 accounting firm, he is better than the last Nigerian man I dated." NG: "Yes but I am sure he is black as the night (sounded racist), short, ugly and pronounces Church as Chech!" The NG girl had met this Ghanaian guy as had I and he did not fit any of these stereotypes. You can imagine. Instead of the them to leave her biased comment and maybe even attack her at most, not only does the man defend his men. The woman annihilates Ghanaian men unfairly. I am not like this and I know other Nigerian women who are not like this and some who are. Yet if you check it, and ask them (the defensive ones) - they personally do not have anything against Ghanaian men. They are just defensive on behalf of Nigerian men. They might cuss them themselves, but would never say it to others or allow others to do so. I am certain I am not the only Nigerian girl who has witnessed this in UK. This is what I meant previously in the post you highlighted bold. |

nene1: I understand. ikeyman00: You can imagine! The only people that seem to respect Nigerian men for being Nigerians are Nigerian women and yet the opposite is not always the case. I know many Nigerian women who will rate a successful handsome Ghanaian as second rate to a Nigerian agbero. Fine, it nice to see these patriotic women even though i can feel sorry for those non-Nigerian men who dare to stand next to a Nigerian man. But why the imbalance in this unflinching bias? Even I can't explain it - as I am probably among this category. I can see good in every race and still feel guilty if I support that a Non-Nigerian man is better than a Nigerian. Why? |

Sorry its been a long time since I posted here - thanks for all the contributions, quite interesting posts and links. I served in Nigeria from March 2008-March 2009. Batch A as a foreign student. I can tell you it was not easy, but it was well worth it. I have more of a leg to stand on whenever I visit Lagos. I lived as a Lagosian. I rode in danfo and Okada and BRT, everywhere i needed to go. I learned to drink pure water half-way and lay it on a table without it falling over, I learned how to haggle prices (from Plantain to Taxi ride). I learned how to argue with agbero without them killing me! I learned how to be independent in a state that is not tourist friendly. i learned how to encourage Nigerian schoolkids to be productive. I learned how corrupt and envious people could be. I learned how beautiful and wonderful they could be. I did not achieve so much in terms of work. But I achieved much in terms of personal mountains. I GREW - by FORCE! |

maileby: Sorry maileby - the UK visa system and Australian visa system are quite different, the UK visa does not currently ask you to prove your source of funds before you can obtain the visa - they only require you to have the funds (or your parents). I would not like to advise you wrongly, try creating your own thread - and hopeful someone else can be of more help! Sorry. Good luck - i am sure you will be fine! |
