It is not illegal. There are regulations you need to follow and in many cases permission to be sought. But it is a viable strategy many landlords have used to achieve wealth. Some crafty landlords build illegal HMOs to cut costs of following the regulations, others follow the regulations and have been doing so for years. It is a proven model. A 3 bed HMOs have less regulations and are utilised more frequently than the 5 beds which have more stringent requirements.

She is supported by Britain First organization which is a cross between BNP and UKIP. The group made a public video support her and slagged off Theresa May and she never come out to distant herself from the group

Thought that was a rumour/smear campaign set up to sideline her. Well if that's the case, immigrants never had a chance once Brexit was voted for. I wonder if labour will stop fighting themselves in time for next general election? Or if another party like UKIP will end up succeeding Tories (God forbid)?

Blame the universities and student union as they have played a blinder to all these changes targeting foreign students. Remember when home student tuition fees were increased by the govt the student union encouraged all students including foreign student to match to London and demonstrate about it.

It will come back to hurt them with time,They have to keep giving fee discounts or scholarships so as to attract foreign students

Britain needs foreign students. I would argue this is a major pillar of our economy. I wish Leadsom had won. Even though she was a Brexiter she understood economics more. She may eventually have realised more immigration is needed when given the facts.

As Home Secretary in David Cameron’s government, Mrs May clashed repeatedly with other ministers over her attempts to curb migration.

George Osborne, as Chancellor, and officials in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills tried to thwart her efforts because they regarded international students as good for the economy and for universities, which charge them higher tuition fees.

The Treasury and the BIS department were trying to relax the student visa rules by removing student numbers from official immigration statistics altogether.

Last year, the Treasury estimated that an extra 55,000 foreign students would be coming to Britain every year, taking the total number of these non-EU migrants to 320,000 by 2020. This would boost the economy by £1 billion, government documents suggested.

However, when she became Prime Minister, Mrs May sacked Mr Osborne and abolished BIS. The universities brief was moved into a beefed-up Department for Education under the new Education Secretary, Justine Greening, who is one of the Prime Minister’s strongest allies.

I disagree. Long term, say after 2020, Brexit will benefit international students. Short term, the situation is likely to not real change much. Although some employers might become more willing to sponsor good non-EU students now, if they are thinking forward to a post Brexit era.

The UK really does need some immigration, if there will be any economic growth. On one hand, the stoppage of an free inflow of hardworking EU workers means prices of goods and services will rise dramatically, when entitled Brits are the only one who can take these jobs, especially the low skilled ones. For instance, I read about truck drivers somewhere in England who used to earn £16 an hour years ago, but a glut of EU drivers crashed the wage down to £9. If these wages go back up, then prices of goods will have to rise as well.

It will even be worse with high skilled jobs. It has been proven that although Cameron's Govt had been pushing against immigration, without high figures for it, there would be no way that the current population can meet economic targets (budget surplus by 2020). Now that the workforce can't easily come from Europe, it means everyone else now has a fairer chance of getting a work visa. Of course, you still need relevant skills.

I don't think Theresa May was all that hostile towards international students as Home Secretary. She had a impossible directive from her boss; to reduce immigration to the tens of thousands. So, she ensured that many loopholes are blocked. Unfortunately she's also made it tougher for fresh grads to get sponsored. BUT, all in all, immigration has actually risen, despite all her efforts.


Your point of view sounds reasonable. Unfortunately, as of yet, certain things have not been confirmed. Theresa May has not banned free flow of EU migrants and if she wants access to the single market EU has intimated she will have to give free flow for EU migrants. So if the basis of all this new non-European favouritism is on no free flow access for EU migrants, we will all have to wait and see.

Also the budget surplus was pretty much abandoned by George Osborne, just before Theresa May replaced him. It is uncertain whether his replacement will reinstate that, but I assume not.

You are right though, the UK needs immigrants at least in the short to medium term. If they scrapped the welfare system or made certain aspects harder to access though you may find this would no longer be the case in the long term.

Brexit could not occur until 2019 anyway. So I advise anyone coming now to as always have a view of returning to Nigeria at the end of a masters course. For longer courses, try and target companies that don't depend so heavily on the EU, as a safer alternative. Easier said than done I know.

David Cameron has made many promises to the British people: that net migration would be cut to the tens of thousands, for example. And, more recently, that whatever the result of the referendum on Thursday, he's staying put in Downing Street.

You might have been sceptical about his immigration pledge, and it would probably be wise to be just as doubtful about his vow not to quit. So in three days' time, we may well be starting not only Brexit negotiations but a Conservative leadership election.


And even if it's a vote to stay in the EU, Mr Cameron's divided party may show him the door anyway. Much ink has been spilled on the likelihood of Boris Johnson entering Downing Street. If it is Brexit for Britain, his decision to back the 'Out' campaign will look like a courageous act of political leadership. And if we stay in the EU? He'll still be rewarded by the grassroots for his euroscepticism.

So what of his most likely opponent in any leadership contest? No, not George Osborne but Theresa May.

Mrs May is truly the quiet woman of British politics. And I don't mean that as an insult. There’s no shortage of loud-mouths soaking up the attention and hogging the airwaves during this rancorous EU referendum campaign. The Home Secretary, by contrast, has been reserved to the point of invisibility.

When she does enter the fray, you can't help but take notice. While the (mostly male) politicians tussle noisily over the benefits of staying or leaving the European Union, May has clearly been listening to mounting evidence of public disquiet about immigration. The Remainers wanted this poll to be about the economy, but the voters had other ideas.

So when the Home Secretary said last week she can “completely understand” concern about immigration and that the government should look at “further reform” of the rules in future, she’s doing herself a favour. And although she has repeatedly refused to comment on her leadership ambitions, it's now clear that she, rather than Osborne, might end up being Johnson’s main opponent. And this could be the week she finally makes her move.

The chancellor has made a series of blunders which have left him seriously damaged, both among his colleagues and the grassroots who will ultimately have the final say.

The brutal cuts to disability benefits – which prompted the resignation of Iain Duncan Smith – appalled Conservative MPs who might previously have been tempted to back Osborne. And many were dismayed by what they saw as crude blackmail last week when he threatened to impose tax rises and further spending cuts if Britain votes to leave the EU.

So while a Boris v George contest is still one possible scenario being played out in Westminster, it can no longer be counted on.

Other erstwhile challengers are also looking like a racing uncertainty. The business secretary Sajid Javid was once tipped for the top, but while his son-of-a-bus-driver-turned- city-whizz kid backstory has a definite appeal, his track record in office has been patchy. He hasn't covered himself in glory over the Tata steel debacle, and business leaders say privately they don't think his heart’s in the job.

Education Secretary Nicky Morgan, meanwhile, is certain to stand for the leadership, but troubles over academies and battles waged and lost with number 10 over issues like sex education have rather dented her authority.

Authority, though, is something May has in spades. The longest-serving Home Secretary for more than a century, she's managed - in a department known for destroying reputations - to enhance hers. This is something of a miracle, particularly when you consider the government has failed to meet one of its central manifesto pledges on her watch: the promise to reduce immigration to the tens of thousands.

But Mrs May has managed to dodge the bullets by keeping her head down. Where her rivals court publicity, she loathes it.

Of course, avoiding the limelight can have its drawbacks, reinforcing the sense many of her colleagues have that she's rather cold and aloof. The polar opposite, in fact, of the man I believe she's now intent on taking on. And that may end up working in her favour. Because where Boris is all bonhomie and exuberance, the biggest criticism of him is that he lacks gravitas.

Can you imagine Prime Minister Boris addressing the nation from the steps of number 10 after a terrorist attack? Me neither. Whereas a sober-suited, ashen-faced Mrs May would no doubt rise to the occasion.

So the two names put to the Conservative grassroots could offer a genuine choice between a man with the gift of the gab and buckets of charm and a woman with a steely determination and quiet power.

Then again, it might be none of the above. Several Tory MPs are keen to see fresh faces in the contest, like employment minister Priti Patel or work and pensions secretary Stephen Crabb for example – though neither have anywhere near May’s experience. Justice Secretary Michael Gove is felt to have had a good referendum campaign, though he swears he's not interested in the leadership.

One of the most intriguing contenders wouldn't be able to stand this time round because she's not an MP. Ruth Davidson, the party’s leader in Scotland, has got charisma on a par with Boris Johnson, a hinterland to put the old-Etonian former mayor in the shade, and an appeal beyond traditional supporters to rival his.

But, as things stand, Mrs May looks like the woman Boris has to defeat. Manoeuvres have already begun. Watch this space when polling stations close on Thursday night.

These are just my opinions as a British Nigerian in the UK.

Why there may be less jobs for those in Diaspora, less Nigerian migration to UK and less money remittances home

The service sector dominates the UK economy, contributing around 78% of GDP; the financial services industry is particularly important and London is the world's largest financial centre. If companies want a European Base they normally put a London base as their first choice. Between 2004 and 2014, £581bn was invested into the UK by foreign businesses. More than half of this total came from outside the EU, with the UK’s access to the single market being a prime motivator.

However, leaving EU may mean having a UK based has no access to the single market and trading with Europe attracts more taxes making it more expensive so they may shift their offices like JPMorgan has intimated.

The automotive industry is also a major employer and exporter. They have public stated leaving EU would be bad for business, so you know that may lead to them moving to Germany and job losses in UK. The British economy is boosted by North Sea oil and gas production; its reserves were valued at an estimated £120 billion in 2011. All of Scotland voted remain so there may be a new Referendum with Scotland wishing to leave UK. This will reduce money coming to England. Most of England voted leave with only London voting to remain. Those areas that voted leave are areas that are quite honestly filled with a higher number of racist and/or Brits (who don't often have the education to back their arrogance but continually revert back to "the good old colonial days"wink. The vote to leave campaign was largely based on people not wanting immigration. So now that the PM has stepped down. Another issue is who will be the next PM. Boris Johnson does not look stable. Michael Gove may be a better choice for conservatives but he needs sound economic policies. If after conservative party tenure finishes the Brits vote Nigel Farage, who alongside Boris spearheaded the Brexit immigrants of all races will suffer. As whatever he has said, fundamentally, he is a racist, supported by rascists. Including the BNP, a party who believe anyone not white (even if British), should be packed into ships and thrown out of UK.

How it could favour us
Right now things look bleak as the Gbp has already crashed in line with my statements above. But this could end up being a good thing under the right leadership with the right civilians also. It could in the long term be favourable. If people foster a manufacturing based economy and the pound remains low. It may mean more exports (especially outside EU) as our goods will become more affordable. This may mean more jobs for the right skills etc (engineers, computer scientists, scientists especially pharmaceutical). But it won't happen overnight.

The truth as I said is this all boils down to leadership. Brexit has happened. What Nigerians need to think of is now the next election. Who is best served to strengthen the economy? Who has our Nigerian interests at heart (diaspora and at home)? Don't just listen to campaign promises I urge you. These politicians all lie to get what they want. Who actually would given their acquaintances, background, success in their own work and actually having a written manifesto be best placed for the task cum opportunity ahead?

Hi azpunpin, this is just a list of universities most actively targeted by employers. It has no bearing on your ability to secure a good role, this depends on previous work experience, your course of study, grades and ability to impress during the application stage.

This list was compiled for the sake of those who have not yet chosen their university. For those applying for university places, if you want a university whose graduates are sought after, another option is to look at the Russell Group universities, or institutions that are consistently in the top 20 of most league tables (Guardian, Times, etc). azpunpin , Lancaster is consistently in the top 10. Some employers will actively state in adverts they only accept applicants from Russell group or top 20 universities especially investment banking and related sectors who generally have high starting salaries, so your funds were likely a good investment.

Forbes at a point ranked the MBA program 7th in the world and 3rd in the UK in its rankings of non-US 1-year MBA programs. Equally, the Financial Times had the course ranked 3rd in the world for value for money. Accounting and Finance at undergrad is currently ranked 2nd in the country by the Times. Essentially the management school has an exceedingly good reputation. The physics department also receives similar sorts of praise. Because of the strength of the management school, businesses will take a high level of interest in employing graduates there. Equally, the strength of the research means that outside academic institutions will be very interested in recruitment from the university. I have heard reports of students there being hired for summer internships at the US Library of Congress, due in large part to the reputation of the University both here in the UK and overseas.

• Despite optimistic initial targets for the 2011-2012 recruitment season, the UK’s leading employers recruited fewer graduates than expected in 2012 – entry-level vacancies decreased by 0.8% compared with recruitment in 2011. Employers had increased their graduate recruitment by 2.8% in 2011 and 12.6% in 2010, following sharp falls of 17.8% in 2009 and 6.7% in 2008.
• The biggest cuts in graduate vacancies in 2012 were at the accounting & professional services firms and the investment banks – employers in these sectors reduced their graduate intake by more than 1,200 places, compared with their original recruitment targets.
• The outlook for the current recruitment season has improved and employers are expecting to increase their graduate recruitment by 2.7% in 2013.

Important information on switching from a Tier 4 or Student category into Tier 2
Here are some notes from you summarised by DegreeAngel UK Ltd:
- Tier 1 (Post Study) work visa closed to new applicants on 5 April 2012.
- However, new provisions are available under Tier 2 for recent graduates with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, or PhD from a UK recognised or listed body.
- As per the normal Tier 2 requirements, applicants must have a job offer and be paid at least £20,000 (which most graduate roles do) or the minimum appropriate rate set out in the relevant Code of Practice.
- A Resident Labour Market Test (RLMT) will not be required and jobs will not be subject to the annual limit on Tier 2 numbers (i.e. CoS will be in the Unrestricted category) - this is an important development in your favour! It means you will not be sidelined for a home graduate! smiley
- Tier 4/student migrants will be able to switch into Tier 2 once they have been awarded their qualification and must switch into Tier 2 before their Tier 4/student visa expires.
- As now, those who wish to switch from Tier 4 to Tier 2 may start work as a student if their Tier 4 leave is still valid and allows them to work but should not be offered a permanent contract until the Tier 2 application is approved.
- Migrants using this route will continue to be able to sponsor dependants. Please note however that dependants of Tier 4/Student migrants who switch to become Tier 2 migrants in their own right will be subject to the annual limit and will require a Restricted CoS to apply for leave.

The Tier 2 route provides leave to remain for three years with the option to extend for a further two years if still employed by a Tier 2 sponsor. This also benefits companies who wish to develop and retain top talent.

Getting onto a grad scheme from TargetJobs

The majority of training schemes have application deadlines between November and December for programmes starting the following September/October. You need to do your employer research and be ready to apply early during the first term of your final year.

An increasing number of employers have ‘ongoing’ or ‘open’ recruitment processes meaning that, in principle, they take applications year round. Despite this seeming flexibility, you are still advised to apply early. While these recruiters don’t give a hard and fast deadline, they may make offers from the start of the application period and they may close their scheme once they have filled all their vacancies. Some employers do give a specific closing date, but also state that they will close their recruiting process as soon as they have filled their spaces. KPMG is an example of this.

For recruitment success, make sure you’re clued-up on the applications and interview methods used by employers (DegreeAngel UK can assist you with this as well as other online resources). Switching from a Tier 4 or Student category into Tier 2

Here are some notes from you summarised by DegreeAngel UK Ltd:
- Tier 1 (Post Study) work visa closed to new applicants on 5 April 2012.
- However, new provisions are available under Tier 2 for recent graduates with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, or PhD from a UK recognised or listed body.
- As per the normal Tier 2 requirements, applicants must have a job offer and be paid at least £20,000 (which most graduate roles do) or the minimum appropriate rate set out in the relevant Code of Practice.
- A Resident Labour Market Test (RLMT) will not be required and jobs will not be subject to the annual limit on Tier 2 numbers (i.e. CoS will be in the Unrestricted category) - this is an important development in your favour! It means you will not be sidelined for a home graduate! smiley
- Tier 4/student migrants will be able to switch into Tier 2 once they have been awarded their qualification and must switch into Tier 2 before their Tier 4/student visa expires.
- As now, those who wish to switch from Tier 4 to Tier 2 may start work as a student if their Tier 4 leave is still valid and allows them to work but should not be offered a permanent contract until the Tier 2 application is approved.
- Migrants using this route will continue to be able to sponsor dependants. Please note however that dependants of Tier 4/Student migrants who switch to become Tier 2 migrants in their own right will be subject to the annual limit and will require a Restricted CoS to apply for leave.

Summary Of Key Details From The UKBA’s Tier 2 Applicant Guidance
Applicants will be awarded 30 points if they have a Certificate of Sponsorship and are applying to switch into Tier 2 (General) and have current entry clearance, leave to enter or remain in one of the following categories:
 Tier 4 (General);
 Student;
 Student Nurse;
 Student Re-Sitting an Examination;
 Person Writing Up a Thesis;
 Postgraduate Doctor or Dentist;
 An Overseas Qualified Nurse or Midwife; or
 Student Union Sabbatical Officer.

Applicants can only switch into Tier 2 if they meet the following criteria:
- have current leave which has not expired in one of the eligible categories listed above; and
- have successfully completed and passed a UK recognised bachelor or postgraduate degree, Postgraduate Certificate in Education or Professional Graduate Diploma of Education or have completed a minimum of 12 months study in the UK towards a UK PhD during their current period of leave or a period of continuous leave which includes their last grant of leave; and
- studied for the eligible award at a UK institution that is a UK recognised or listed body, or an education provider which holds a licence for sponsoring students under Tier 4 of the Points-Based System; and
- are applying from inside the UK.

Applicants must provide an original degree certificate, academic transcript or an academic reference on official headed paper of the institution must clearly show:
- their name; and
- the course title/award; and
- the course duration; and
- date of course completion unless they are studying a PhD course.

The academic reference must include all the information detailed above.

Which course pays?
Generally you should choose a course based on you career expectations here in UK and in Nigeria. But realistically many of you will want to take the route that maximises your chance of getting the Tier 2 visa after your degree and not having to go back home. So, to increase your chances of getting this work permit I have included this handy list of the top 12 degree subjects for getting a job in the UK from Telegraph:

12. Business & administrative studies - 19,800 of last year's graduates securing work or further study within just six months.

11. Architecture, building and planning - And here's more good news for architecture students - 85.2 per cent had found jobs or further study within six months of graduation.

10. Historical & philosophical studies - A perhaps surprising inclusion in the top 10 is historical and philosophical studies graduates, 85.4 per cent of whom had landed jobs or further studies within six months of finishing their degrees. However, that's down from 90 per cent the previous year - a golden era for historians, seemingly.
They still beat students of subjects which failed to make the list including physics and computer science.

9. Engineering - Experts everywhere have been making robust predictions for the growth of "Stem" jobs (science, technology, engineering and maths) - and so far they don't seem to be wrong. Engineering graduates performed well in the job market last year, with 85.4 per cent landing either a job or further education within six months.

8. Languages - Much as we Brits hate to admit it, the ability to speak another language is a highly sought-after skill in the job market these days – and 86 per cent of 2011/12 language graduates have the jobs to prove it.

7. Mathematical sciences - Mathematicians are clearly in demand – 86.5 per cent had landed jobs or further education positions within 6 months of 2011/12 graduation.

6. Biological sciences - Studying biological sciences isn't all about field trips chasing elephants around the savannahs. Some 87.1 per cent of recent graduates have walked into jobs or more studies, with biotech and other related industries currently booming.

5. Law -If there's one degree choice which has always been seen as a near-guarantee of well-paid employment it has to be law. That appears as true today as ever, with 88.6 per cent of 2011/12's law graduates finding themselves work or study - although it is worth noting that around half of these went into some form of further study.

4. Subjects allied to medicine - This broad category encompasses degrees such as biomedical science and neurology. Across the spectrum an impressive 91.8 per cent of students were able to quickly find work.

3. Veterinary science - Treated as a separate subject from medicine and dentistry by the bods at HESA this year, veterinary science still holds its own in the employment stakes, with 91.9 per cent in either work or study six months after graduation. In fact, purely in terms of employment it ranks second, with 85 per cent of grads finding work immediately in the UK, and another 3 per cent finding employment overseas.

2. Education - we still need teachers – 92.6 per cent of all those leaving university with degrees relating to education picked up work or further study right away. Some 15 per cent were in either part- or full-time study, and just one per cent were working overseas.

1. Medicine & dentistry - A predictable number one, but the margin is still remarkable. A massive 99.4 per cent of all students graduating in medicine or dentistry landed themselves jobs or further study within six months of graduating. 92 per cent went straight into work in the UK.

This post is perhaps going to be a little more interactive than posts of past. Today I would like to talk to you about an issue that affects all Nigerian women in Nigeria and here in the diaspora (as well as many other ethnicities).

I would like to talk to you about skin bleaching/lightening/toning! This is not a "how to" article although I may write something on it after more research. This is not a debate on if bleaching is right or wrong (this is debatable) nor is it a research article on the dangers of overuse/misuse. I can write about all of this at later date. This article is a discussion on the mindset behind bleaching/lightening and your opinions on how this affects families as a mother and/or wife.

THE QUEST FOR BEAUTY
With my focus on business and home economics you may be surprised to see me of all people write about something as trivial sounding as lightening or anything relating to beauty for that matter. But, I ask you, why wouldn't I? Why wouldn't a married woman, entrepreneur, housewife, professional, etc care about beauty and take note of the trends in lightening as a supposed beauty tool. After all we are all women, many of us have partners and those without would like to have partners who first of all see your appearance before they know your personality or character. Even in work and business how you look, from skin, hair to clothes and shoes makes a difference in your success as people perceptions of you are inextricably linked to your appearance also. So beauty is important to the majority (if not all) of us. Even those who do not care what men see them as physically become intimidated when met with a beautiful woman.

So what is our perception of beauty? If you look at the video, bleaching apparently accounts for the skin colour/texture of approximately 80% of Nigerian women and it even claims it is the most common place in the world for skin bleaching. Is this the Nigerian perception of beauty? Is this a statistic to be proud of?

A UK survey has found women control family finances, something most UK Nigerian women did not need a survey to work out (look up Proverbs 31 for insight).

This newspaper article is dubbing these women as the "family CEO".

They say being called a housewife is not an accurate description of what they do, their roles being more closely linked to a director in a company. I presume this makes the husband the shareholder who wants to see a return on his investment and the children may double up as employee owners.

93% of those who were not the main breadwinners made all or most of the financial decisions.
