what do these countries have in common? High population? huh
May be you should read the article again! I hate to keep pointing the obvious, but not only do we have high population, but we have inadequate infrastructure to cater for BASIC HEALTH CARE as stated in the article. It do not take a genius to figure out the correlation between both.

I work in the health sector, and believe me on this one, we as a nation are way behind. smiley

tpiah:
why is Nigeria one of the worst places to be a mother? The women are too confrontational due to what exactly? Polygamy and second class status? huh
Do you know what services are provided to Mothers and expectant mothers? How many Ante-natal clinics are fully equipped in Nigeria? Or how many Post-natal experts do we have?  Again see above, we do not have the right facilities to provide these things, hence why on comparison to all other nations of the world, Nigeria is one of the worst places. Immunization is still at its infancy, Infancy death is still high, Malnourishment is still ever present etc. it is a fair point to say Nigeria is one of the worst places to be a mum.

Perhaps if there is a slight increase in amount people live on in a day, an increase in GDP and other things, perhaps we shall see a drop in number of people seeing the need to get rich this way. Let's not forget that these things are happening as a result of various combination. One of them is poverty.

@Poster

What is your problem distorting stories? A story carried May 22, 2008, you are saying it is a story of April 24 2009?

What is the matter with you? Where in the report is it stated that it is a WHO report?

Not only are Nigerians illetrates, they are fools as well - well, I am not surprised, even the so called travelled fols, they seem to be the worse off for it, look at the comments that followed the wrong report - do they even read? if they read, do they understand?
He did not distort the story like you are claiming. Yes he made and error of adding "WHO" to the title, but to call it a distortion is an overstatement. Yes the report may have been published in 2008, are you however telling me those points are STILL not valid, or Nigeria have made leaps and bounds since then in those areas concerned?

As for your second paragraph, you are quite funny in an unfunny way if you know what I mean. You come across as bitter with your unnecessary attacks here. The thing is your own post is riddled with errors too, which I already highlighted and it just makes your second paragraph here all ironic to be honest.

I keep asking you, what is wrong with criticizing your beloved nation? It appears that few of your types get overworked about this.

For the record, an illiterate is someone who cannot read or write, so by the very definition of it no one is an illiterate around here. smiley And try and get the spelling right, before you use it next time. grin
Music/RadioRe: Conscious Or Bubble Gum Rap Which One Do You Prefer by ElRazur: 10:03am On Apr 25, 2009
chiogo:
In every rap album, there's almost always a bubble-gum aka commercial song on it, that's usually the ones played by DJs on the radio or have videos. Most rappers are capable of being 'intelligent', they don't show those on tv but when you get the album, that's when you get to listen to those. I just don't like when specific rappers are categorized as 'intelligent' rappers. That's BS. Sometimes, even I get bored of that. A good artiste is versatile. And if you keep doing only your 'intelligent rap', it's your loss.
It all depends on your classification of commercial song. Canibus hardly produces songs aimed at the radio or airplay.[bar the one time he had a stab at it with HIPHOP FORSALE]

I disagree that most rappers are capable of being intelligent. Most rapper will only do what they are good at. A good example is Soulja boy. I really do not see how he can come out with something as deep like those of Common or something Jada would spit.

While you may disagree about "Intelligent rappers" they actually do exist. All you have to do is check out their discography and see for yourself. You need to take into consideration that some people do it for the love and not exactly in it for the extra cheese like most are these days. So if such artist keep making intelligent rap, it is not a loss to them as they are doing what they enjoy. smiley

You are missing the point. The Obama family is an "image" with a PR behind it. Is it not a bit odd to you how they appear "perfect" and "doing the right thing" all the time?

It is well known that "playing a family" is one way to win the hearts of the people. This have nothing to do with what you are suggesting.

SportsHow Can We Win The World Cup, When We Can't Get The Selection Right? by ElRazur(op): 9:41am On Apr 25, 2009

Nigeria have bizarrely handed a call-up to Hamburg midfielder Dennis Aogo for World Cup qualifiers even though he is not eligible to play for the country.

The former German youth international is among a Super Eagles 29-man squad for June's World Cup qualifiers.

Aogo, whose father is from Ilesha in south-west Nigeria, had apparently been keen on playing for the Super Eagles.

But the Germany-born player cannot switch allegiance to Nigeria as he is now 22 years old.

Fifa allows players who have represented one country at junior level to switch to another country.

But the statutes of world football's governing body state that this can only happen if they are still under the age of 21.

This is the second time Nigeria have called up an ineligible player for a World Cup qualifier in recent times.

West Ham United striker Carlton Cole was named in the squad for the games against South Africa in September and Sierra Leone in October.

But the England international, who was then 24 failed to turn up for the game because as expected he could not get the clearance from Fifa.

Meanwhile, Fulham midfielder Dickson Etuhu returns to the squad for the time since last year's African Cup of Nations in Ghana.

Also making returns are Germany-based striker Chinned Obasi, midfielder Yusuf Ayila of Dinamo Kiev and Rennes defender Elderson Echiejile.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/africa/8017173.stm

What chances do we have of winning, when who ever selects the squad makes this sort of error in this day and age? How hard is it to know who is eligible and who isn't? While this may be a small issue, it just goes to highlight the incompetency that have riddled every aspect of what we do. God help us.

@labiyemmy:
Why will someone ask us if we read the article? Someone must think everyone on NairaLand is a fool.

ElRazur - what you just described as your field sounds to me like a lab scientist kind of job which is many here in Nigeria.
There are many types of scientist and what I do hasn't taken off in Nigeria to that extent I am after.

How many time do doctors routinely send off blood for analysis? How many times do we have a "group and save" done on a blood prior to operation? How many times are amniocenteses are carried out on pregnant ladies? Do we check for things like "Fragile X syndrome"? Are there patients on Warfrins treatment in Nigeria [something that is standardized across Europe now]. What about Freud's test?

I think you will find that answer to these questions will be over-whelming NOs. What we have instead are elementary microbiology checking for routine stuff like Typhoid, HIV, etc. These are routine stuff and do not really need specialised machinery like I described before.

The role is being hampered in my opinion by the doctors of Nigeria playing "jack of all trades" they seem to know what is wrong with a patient, without even testing them in a lab. A practices that will get people struck off the register here. All illness are either Malaria, Typhoid or some other common ailments. [A very wrong approach as anyone who know what am talking about will tell you]

and what field is that.
Biomedical Sciences. With emphasis on Haematology and other areas. smiley

@labiyemmy:
People like us moved back, not waiting for the development of our field, but actually pioneering the development and earning money in the process - why do i have to wait for the development, why cant i spearhead that development? It is a case of what you can do for your country and not what your country can do for you, if everyone waits till their field is developed, then, who will develop the country or how will the country develop then?
The problem here is the lack of recognition of what I do. The doctor back home seem to have blurred this line. If you go to a doctor here in the UK, he's got no idea what is wrong in most case. Especially if samples are collected. It is my work as  a BMS [Biomedical scientist] to analyse these samples and give my findings - which then aids the doctor in their diagnosis.

My work place recently fitted analysers that cost £50,000. These machines can analyse thousands of different samples etc. Ranging from your hba1c, down to those on warfrins.  A simple microfuge [a very small centrifuge machine needed for separation techniques] cost £10,000 and that is even second hand price. Then let us not forget the supplies that requires cool environment for storage etc. Some of these cost £400 each for a single test etc.

You can see that I will be fighting an uphill battle here. I will need close to hundred of millions to have it the same standards I have been trained in. Remember, I cannot be cutting corners here as people's life depend on it.

While it is easier to set trends in certain fields, it is somewhat difficult to do so with Biomedical sciences in my view, unless you have the money and need constant training. I have the training, but not the kind of money needed.

Agreed, however people like me are not contemplating a moving back yet, due to lack of of development in my field back home.

My main concern is your modem/router set-up and how your connection to the ps3 is established.  Tiscali do have a forum I believe, you can always do a search on there too.

Go into you settings in pro evo and use AUTO. [I am not at where my ps3 is at the moment so I can only tell you things from the top of my head]

Foreign AffairsBritish Betrayal Of The Gurkhas In My Opinion by ElRazur(op): 5:56pm On Apr 24, 2009
The Gurkhas have served the British well for over two hundred years. They have supported the forces, fought loyally and without question. Yet the ruling today means these folks will not be allowed to settle in the UK. Surely, we own them a great debt and the least we can do is to allow them to settle here with their family?

It just goes to show how out of touch the government is sometimes. I am surely not voting for them any more. The only upside to this story is that campaigners are not stepping down their campaign for justice.

Gurkhas who risked their lives for Britain suffered a major blow today in their attempts to win the right to settle here.

The Home Office announced that after a High Court ruling 10,000 more former soldiers and family members would be eligible to live permanently in Britain, but campaigners say that in reality the new rules may help fewer than 100 men.

David Enright, a solicitor acting on behalf of the Gurkhas, said: “They have set criteria that are unattainable. They require a Gurkha to serve for 20 years – but a rifleman is only permitted to serve for 15 years.

“It’s a sham and an absolute disgrace. It’s far more restrictive than the old policy.”

Richy your statement is flawed and not always true. Education is not about going to school and having certificates to show for it. Education takes different forms.

You need to realise that the Obama family is not a "true family" but something put together so that it suits the expectation of the wider audience. On contrast "The simpsons" represent a "truer family" than the Obamas.
