There are always choice to make when it comes to setup like this

for inverter there is a choice to go for all in one system AKA Hybrid DEYE, GROWATT, AXPERT, SRNE or a normal separate inverter VICTRON, ANY OTHER INVERTER with torodial transformers and match it up with other necessary accessories

your estimated energy is in the range of 53KWh and above with matching panels that can pump that battery up daily in good sunlight.

Thank you. I added a few of those names to my list and I have been actively looking and reading around small small.

You estimated 53Kwh, abeg how much is that in Kva?

I strongly believe you've already done your energy consumption calculation to arrive at 10kva inverter. I'm sure your plan has exceeded two units of 1hp otherwise 5kva inverter would've taken care of it but for the sake of people like us who may have an intention of powering our ACs with solar too, I'll like to know the two AC horse power you intend to power with 10kva inverter sir.

Oga thanks for the reply.

This area isn't my strong point but the 10kva calculation is to cover for additional needs. E.g Supplemental flood lights (I find that solar powered one lacks the intensity of brightness as Electrical powered ones of same wattage)

There are then the occasional use of washing machine, water pumps, iron and other miscellaneous. I am open to your views if you feel a smaller Kva is better.

Just a quick recap, 6 ACs in the house but only 2 will be in use at most point in time. The ACs are all 1kva inverter types. Fridge/freezer will be on 24/7, flood lights (400watts or so x 6 points will be on from evening)

I look forward to your analysis.

Guys abeg, I need your help and clear advise - preferably from those in the know.

I urgently need to set up 10Kva solar system and I need your advice abeg.

My needs are simple: power 2 inverter AC at least for 24 hours. Lights and TV, occasional water pump use.

I have narrowed things down to using LiFePo4 batteries due to have a longer use life, but picking a reputable brand seem to be a minefield. I'm leaning towards Felicity but I am not even sure anymore due to all I have read about them etc. Please advice.

Hey. Apologies for the late reply.

The generator hasn't been ordered yet. However I got a quotation from Perkins for 4.5m for their 20kva generator.

From what I have read, there are mostly two types, the one that are meant to serve as back up and used intermittently and the one with heavy use in mind. I believe the Perkins are designed for heavy and continuous use. Firman and similar brands do have heavy duty types but the common and affordable ones are the intermittent use ones only.

I am just putting finishing touches to where the generator will be so I should be updating this thread at some point. I am also sniffing around solar too.

In Nigeria Volvos, particularly 2003 - 2009 Volvos have always been for those looking for cheap alternatives, that's a fact I know you hate people pointing out. You would prefer to push the narrative that Volvo owners in Nigeria are all about quality and safety, lol, na wash. Their money simply no reach for better or far more desirable equivalents.

Of course Volvos dey enter market, who no like cheap things. Substandard chinese goods as well dey enter market, but at the end of the day if we're honest to ourselves, we all know the truth.

I am not sure how we got here but this is totally unnecessary. Whatever personal issues you have, it may be worth resolving it in private.

Your blanket statement is hilarious at best and you are opting to cast a wide net without a care who may take offence.

So I bought a Volvo because my money no reach? LOL. Hilarious. I bought what suited my need. I needed an offroader that I can use a few times in the year that I am around and guess what, the Volvo XC90 ticked all the boxes and more. And after my initial experience, I have to say Volvo has delivered on many fronts and more. There is more to personal choice than just money. But each to their own jare. Feel free to double down on your claims.

When Safety is being touted as a reason to get a Volvo, it really isn't "wash" but a statement of fact. XC 90 has 5 star NCAP rating. There are passive and active features as standard. The XC60 is literally one of the safest car Volvo has ever made. Sigh. You see, some of us value the finer details of things but I'm going to stop here. Feel free to double down like I said.

Alagba, there will always be critics. If you remember correctly, there were critics before getting the Volvo XC90. I have to say that most of the concern of the critics were just hot air to be honest. The car has proven itself for my need and this is the Koko that most critics just refuse to take into consideration.

I like that it is reliable, able to self diagnose simple issue, able to cope well with Nigerian roads and it is actually a very quiet car even when revved hard.

My brother drives a Mercedes and in his opinion, he feels that the XC90 offers the same level of reliability as a merc. I don't drive a merc so cannot comment on one.

All in all, oga keep doing your thing. I have no regrets buying from you and I will most likely buy from you again. Ignore the critics. Let them keep the noise, you can keep the business tickling jare.

I no get ulterior motive, so I can tell you a thing or two about some Volvo models.

Location and environment:

If you live in Lagos, my brother get the XC60. Though e just dey enter market small small compared to XC90, parts dey especially the initial models in 2010 and so on. You get XC90 so you suppose get network for Volvo matters.

However you mentioned off roading. If na all those perpetually flooded or very rugged Lagos areas wey need ride with good ground clearance and responsive 4WD, jump and pass over the XC60, e no go give you wetin you want.

If you live in Abuja, still get the XC60, but make sure say your current XC90 network go fit work for the XC60, including sourcing parts and doing repairs, I know some guys in Zuba and Apo wey be Volvo people. Again, if your Abuja na all dem Mararaba and Gwagwalada or Kubwa areas or areas wey need rugged 4WD, jump and pass.

If you live anywhere outside those states or regions, my brother jump and pass. You fit freestyle XC90 2.5l or the 3.2l in terms of parts and repair people in other random places, but I tell you say e no go work for XC60.

Parts isn't an issue for me. I got two shocks for the XC90 from England just in case I needed to replace them. In fact, I have extra plugs, filters and other consumable at homes that I got should in case I needed them.

My base isn't those places but Kwara and the roads are fairly okay there for daily driving. I also have a mech who specialises in all things Volvo so those angles are covered. Admittedly, I don't remember him working on a XC60 though but these things are fairly similar and it won't be much of an issues I would have thought.

Volvo suvs are generally soft roaders. They're not seriously off-road capable from the factory.

QED.

That's a serious statement to make without much to back it up. What class of road would you have 90% of Nigeria's motorway and road network? IMO, they are bad roads and no roads which put them in the same class as "off road". The XC90 hasn't failed in dealing with places I have taken it to. Sure there are times where I have been stuck but that was down to me as a driver instead of the car.

These things are tested on a snow field in Sweden and they perform well, I do expect some of those performance to even translate better on dirt and grits like we have on our road. My two cents really.

LOL. These na white people activity na. I was generally referring to Nigeria's road jare. Generally, the XC90 is able to cope with most things thrown at it so I just assume the little brother is probably in the same class.

LG Double inverter AC X 2.
2 X 1k watts street solar lamp.
2 X 350 watts street solar lamp.

The plan is to maximize all things on solar as much as possible and automated. Or at least minimal human input when up and running.

It's a type I'll really like to buy.

By the looks of it, yes. I bought 350 watts type of these to naija - all 8 of them and they were bright enough on the property I used them on. Only ended up using 4 of them to achieve good level of brightness in total darkness.

They have a 12, 8 and 6 hours timer or auto timer on the remote controlled. Mine I left on auto. Will come on around sundown (6.45pm or so) and go off by 5 or 6 in the morning). They really are good. Here's a pic. . .

I think you can get the batteries first as long as it is lithium. They can stay in storage for 8 to 10 months without losing much charge. It will be good you get it now because that is about the heart of your system onto which every other thing latches. If you wanna go DIY, ordering it now before further naira plunge will ensure you save money and also save time as it will arrive before year end.

Your inverter AC and indeed other electrical appliances are about the easiest and least stressful to acquire. Electronic shops including Fouani will always have stocks and newer, more efficient models are always reeled out as R& D into these appliances progress. You can buy one appliance today and in a month's time, a newer more power efficient model which tickles your fancy is produced.

The major upgrade you may require in your battery pack is the BMS whereas an upgrade to your electrical appliance means selling it off to acquire a newer one.

After your battery, get your inverter and since you mention that you have a generator, you can use that to charge your set up while you plan to acquire solar panels. Even your solar panels can be procured in phases of 3 or 6 panels or multiples of it (if you're using 48v system) at a time depending on how deep your pocket is.

Thank you.

It is a bit of a catch 22 with the battery, the place should be ready soon and all I buy will be in storage. It is a case of buying when I can so as to avoid future jump in prices. I have looked into the LifePo4 battery and power wall battery pack using same battery tech but I never ordered directly from China before so I am looking at things closely.

As per AC, I am egding closer to a 1HP with dual inverter (I read that it offers faster cooling than single inverter AC). The idea of buying some of the appliances now is to avoid the naira instability and to have a physical presence of what I am powering with solar.

Thanks for the inputs as per BMS, it is noted.

Abeg, any idea as to what brand of Hybrid inverter to go for. A few replies here suggested Deye 5kva but I am still doing my research on that one as I feel that perhaps having a slightly bigger one like 7 or 8kva version may be better.

To be sincere with you, your budget will determine a lot on the quality & capacity of the components you will need for your solar installation especially if you insist on having the AC on it. If you had started from the beginning of the thread, you will see that it usually recommended that you start small and grow your system so as to save on cost & gain meaningful experience but everyone's situation is different. So a few tips:
1. For your AC's, get the 1HP Gencool Inverter ACs from FOUANI LG shops. They will easily cut down on the energy consumption.
2. Batteries are the last things you buy in an inverter system due to their chemical nature and degradation when stored for long term without use.
3. LiFeP04 batteries are the new kids on the block and highly recommended. Yes, more expensive initially but will pay for itself in the long run. Some can last 5yrs or more. But buy them last when you have gathered all your components.
4. You will have to do a lot of research & googling to find a reputable seller as there a lot of fakes in the market. You can buy from AliExpress or AliBaba but be prepared for high shipping prices.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for inputs. I understand that things are expensive etc but I am also dedicated to the cause.

Will get the ACs first and then the battery at last.

I am still not clear as to whether 5kva is fine or not. I currently use a 5.5kva gen to power similar set up and I assuming solar configuration shouldn't be too far apart in terms of comparison.
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by ElRazur: 2:29pm On Aug 05, 2021
samir101ng:

@ElRazur,

From the comments from the previous posters, you can see that running AC's especially 1.5HP is not an easy or cost-effective thing to do. Therefore, I recommend that you reduce your demand to 1HP and use an AC with inverter technology like LG or Samsung . This also means that you need a bigger inverter like 5KVA and above to comfortably take up the room and breathing space to spare. A 48v system is ideal and this automatically means 4 batteries for your system. Ratings and capacities will be another variable. To get enough panels for a 5KVA system means you need more than 5000watts in solar panels. Then a good solar charge controller & battery monitoring system. Rough estimate for you from solardepot website:
1. Victron Multiples 48v/5KVA. N920,000
2. Victron Energy SmartSolar 150v 60A N285,000
3. Victron Energy Smart Battery Monitor N100,000
4. Jinko Solar Panels 375w x 14 (to get 5250w) N80,000 (using Kiekie's price) N1,120,000
5. For batteries let's assume you get x4 Trojan or Qantas batteries at around N230,000. That's N900,000. And you can run those batteries only to 50% of the rated capacity. To run your AC, you must make it atleast 8 which is N1,800,000. For batteries o.

You still want to include those AC's ElRazur ? undecided

Thanks for the response and adding the estimated prices. I am looking into AC with inverters, if there's any you recommend, abeg let me know.

The whole set up will take some money initially but from reading around, I will be making massive savings in the long term.

Just a quick insight, recently I was in naija, I was spending 4k every couple of days to buy petrol (25L Jerry can) to power the 5kva gen for 2 AC units and a small deep freezer for minimum of 12 hours daily. I did this for a month. . . . In the long term, the cost is going to be substantial so switching to solar is probably the way to go.

My plan is to get things in phases once I have a finalised list. Perhaps two inverter AC and then the Hybrid inverter and so on and so forth.

As for batteries, can you clarify please if buying them now and keeping them in storage will be ideal? I am aware that some battery packs (like the ones in electric scooters) needed to be charged once every 3 months or there about. Will this be applicable to solar batteries too?

Thanks.

First you need to provide actual power ratings on those gadgets but with assumptions:

2 X Aircon 1.5Hp. : 1.5kw X 2
TV and stereo system. : 300w
Security CCTV system: 300w
1 X Fridge or Deep freezer (medium sized): 100w
Lights round the property: 200w
Total: 3.9kw
For 48v system that's 81AH
For 15hr that's 81x15= 1218AH
So you need the following:

5kw inverter such as Deye
You will need external CC as well
1400AH LFP or 2800AH lead acid
20kw panel array.

All the best when you figure out the cost. wink

Thanks for adding those figures.

Things are currently in a planning phase and trying to figure out the way to go. Pardon my ignorance, but my original calculation using a website suggested that I needed a 10Kva inverter (only difference is I added an induction cooker to the list)

Lights round the property.

I have also been looking at hybrid inverters, which ones should I have on my list that is first time user friendly and easy to use.

Finally, based on the set up, will I be able to use generator to supplement and charge the batteries due to poor power supply? Thank you all.

Before we lose the koko of the matter, owner is out of pocket and should not be. What he was billed for and what was actually paid by the "agent" is probably going to make the buyer feel like they were defrauded regardless of the reasons behind it.

Contractual obligations hasn't been fulfilled here. X paid for services. X never (or is yet to receive) the full service and X is also now out of pocket. That's piss poor and from the buyers point of view, the "agent" is the one to be held responsible here. No amount of technicalities is going to give those paid monies back.
