Business › Money-saving Tips For Surviving The Recession by emamos(op): 2:41pm On Sep 05, 2016 |
While recession may not be an ideal economic experience for any nation or the citizens, it is sometimes unavoidable, because it is a part of normal economic cycle. Experts warn that once in every five years or, at best, every eight years, the economy melts down and recession sets in. It is no longer news that the Federal Government has declared that Nigeria is officially in recession. But while the government works to reposition the economy and return the nation to the path of prosperity, what can you do as an individual to better your lot under this harsh economy? Read on… *.Enhance your skills:During a recession, jobs are hardly secure; yet, should job loss happen, it could be had to get a new one. Therefore, enhance your skills, even on the job; work extra hours and work a little harder. *.Prepare for layoffs:On the average, the normal worker does everything to keep his job; but even then, layoffs still happen. Whether or not you’re going to experience this, please update your CV, and be on the lookout for possible job openings. *.Create an emergency fund:In general, most people don’t have emergency funds anywhere. But if you are still lucky to be employed, start one today by setting aside certain sum of money every month. Decide how much money you want to add to it every month. Keep the money in a savings account and let it stay there. *.Pay off your debt:If you are gainfully employed, you must learn to live on your income and avoid going into debts as much as possible, especially during a recession such as this. If you are in debt, focus on paying off your debts as soon as you can, as this will also help in lowering your spending and enable you to have more money to save. *.Identify and streamline your monthly expenses:How much do you spend on your phone lines? Must you sustain that pay-per-view TV? What about the money spent on electricity — such as diesel/petrol for your generator, even when you still pay electricity bills? Is it cheaper to cook or eat out? Which is cheaper: putting your car on the road daily, or taking public transport? The overall goal is to reduce expenses with minimal impact on lifestyle. Be wise about it. *.Boost your income:If there are opportunities to make extra cash, once it is legitimate, go ahead and do it. Can you baby-sit? Do you know how to make hair or apply make-up? Events decoration? Do you know how to bake, knit, or do repair works? Cash in on it and earn some extra naira by so doing. *.Establish a budget:When you get paid, don’t pay all your expenses without something left to save. Rather, discuss with your creditors and agree on realistic payment plans. Also, involve your family members because the impact will affect them. *.Cut down on expenses:There are many ways to cut expenses during a recession. In many cases, you can maintain your same quality of life while focusing on living lean and cutting out extravagant and unnecessary expenses. For instance, buy nothing if you don’t need it to live. Resist sales pitches. Don’t accept offers of ‘soft loan’ from your bank or any lending agency, etc. *.Transportation:If you live in the same geographical area with some fellow workers, you can agree to carpool to work, such that each of you will only have your car on the road less than thrice a week, thus saving money on fuel and maintenance. *.Housing:If your rental fee is high, you may consider changing accommodation and moving into smaller, cheaper accommodation that will still be reasonably comfortable. *.Keep saving. If you can, fit saving into your budget, even during a recession. If you don’t have the money to contribute, consider cutting out other expenses to make it work. When you come out of the recession, you’ll be glad you kept up with saving and your bank account will reflect the interest you’ve earned during that time. *.Enjoy life:In order to avoid recession depression, don’t let fear control you. An intense feeling of paranoia can make you an inflexible employee and also strain your relationships. Be thankful for what you have, and make sure to have fun. Accept difficult times as a challenge for your fortitude and adaptability. http://punchng.com/money-saving-tips-surviving-recession/ |

Politics › Senators And Reps Earn N6.78bn Annually by emamos(op): 11:59am On Sep 05, 2016 |
At a time Nigerians are groaning under the yoke of recession, members of the National Assembly (NASS) comprising the Senators and Members of House of Representatives have received a total sum of N6.78 billion as their official salaries and allowances in one year, investigation by Economic Confidential has revealed. The report obtained by Economic intelligence magazine showed the ‘legitimate’ remuneration of the federal legislators in compliance to the statutory approval of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). The remuneration packages include: annual salaries, accommodation, vehicle maintenance and fuel, Personal Assistants, House maintenance, domestic staff, entertainment and utilities allowances. Others allowances are; Constituency allowance, Annual Leave, Hardship allowance, wardrobe, newspapers and responsibility allowances. A careful scrutiny of the report shows that each Senator has annual salary of N2.02m while a member of House of Representative receives N1.98mn as annual basic salary. The basic salary of the Senate President is N2.48mn while that of the Speaker of House of Rep is N2.47mn. The Deputy Senate President has N2.30mn as annual basic salary while his counterpart, Deputy Speaker earns N2.28mn annually. In addition to the annual basic salary, each member of the National Assembly receives 200 percent of the annual salary for accommodation, 75 percent for vehicle maintenance, 25 percent for Personal Assistants, 5 percent for house maintenance, 75 percent for domestic staff, 30 percent for both entertainment and utilities. Others are, 25 percent for wardrobe, 15 percent for newspapers and responsibility allowance of between 10, 7, and 5 percent respectively as the case may be on the position of the legislator. While each senator receives a whopping 250 percent for constituency allowance, member of House of Representative gets 100% for the same annually. The senate numbering 109 senators gulped the sum of N1.85billion in the last one year, while the 360 members of the House of Representatives got N4.93 billion! According to estimates from the report, there are Non-Regular allowances federal legislators are entitled to. They include furniture and severance gratuity which are due only once in four years. Other non-regular allowances include Estacode allowances which is paid in US Dollars for foreign trips and Duty Tour allowance which is paid in Naira for local trips within Nigeria. Further analysis by the Economic Confidential reveals that an average Nigerian worker with a minimum wage of N18,000 a month will have to work for four years before earning the utility allowance for one legislator. Unless the remuneration package is reviewed downward or upward by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, the legislators will continue to enjoy the current official salaries and allowances. http://dailypost.ng/2016/09/05/breakdown-senators-reps-earn-n6-78bn-annually/

Politics › Ekiti People Will Participate In Preparing 2017 Budget – Fayose by emamos(op): 10:07am On Sep 05, 2016 |
Gov. Ayo Fayose of Ekiti on Sunday declared that every single community in the state would be allowed to have input into the 2017 budget so as to make it people-oriented. This is contained in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Idowu Adelusi in Ado Ekiti. The statement quoted Fayose to have said that traditional rulers, local chiefs and community leaders would be consulted to offer suggestions before the final ratification of the budget. The governor said he has already commenced collating the views and opinions of community leaders in the preparation of the 2017 Budget, According to him, this will produce a document that truly reflect the needs of the people and not that of government alone “It is my belief that this type of bottom-to-top approach being adopted by the government in preparing the budget will ensure prioritising the needs of the people. “State officials cannot just sit down in Ado-Ekiti and choose what the people want in the various communities for the government to accommodate in the budget; it must be participatory and all-embracing. “If we say let us for instance do a road project somewhere, the most important need of the people of that community could be a health facility. “We want people’s participation in the preparation of the budget so as to affect their lives positively and meet with them at very point of their need”, he said. The governor also promised that his administration will not leave any abandoned project behind while leaving office. Fayose advised community leaders to hold meetings with their people as well as collate their needs and forward same to their local government chairmen. “Such documents will get to us at the state level and we want to assure all that we will try as much as possible and within available resources to touch many communities, ” he said http://dailypost.ng/2016/09/05/ekiti-people-will-participate-preparing-2017-budget-fayose/ |
Politics › Nigeria One Of The Poorest Countries In The World, Over 80m Living Below Poverty by emamos(op): 8:55am On Sep 05, 2016 |
A United Nations, UN, report on Nigeria’s Common Country Analysis, CCA, has described the country as one of the poorest and unequal country in the world, with over 80m of her population living below poverty line. This was as the report revealed that the country was deeply divided on the basis of plurality of ethnic, religious and regional identities. The report was made public during a consultative meeting on the formulation of the UN Development Assistance Framework IV (UNDAF IV) for the South East geo-political zone in Awka. According to the report, some part of Nigeria had at different times expressed feelings of marginalization, short changed, dominated, oppressed, threatened, and even targeted for elimination. The report read in part: “Nigeria, with a population of over 175 million, is the most populous nation in Africa and the seventh most populous in the world. Her population will be approximately 200 million by 2019 and over 400 million by 2050, becoming one of the top five populous countries in the world. “Nigeria is one of the poorest and most unequal countries in the world, with over 80 million or 64% of her population living below poverty line. The situation has not changed over the decades, but is increasing. Poverty and hunger have remained high in rural areas, remote communities and among female –headed households and these cut across the six geo-political zones, with prevalence ranging from approximately 46.9 percent in the South West to 74.3 percent in North West and North East. “In Nigeria, 37% of children under five years old were stunted, 18 percent wasted, 29% underweight and overall, only 10% of children aged 6-23 months are fed appropriately based on recommended infant and young children feeding practices. “Youth unemployment which is 42% in 2016 is very high, creating poverty, helplessness, despair and easy target for crime and terrorism. Over 10 million children of school age are out of schools with no knowledge and skills. “Nigeria’s economy is currently in a recession and it is estimated that government revenues have fallen by as much as 33 percent, which has further resulted in the contraction of the Gross Domestic Product, GDP, by 0.36 percent in the first three months of 2016. “The vulnerable macroeconomic environment in Nigeria is affecting investors’ confidence in the domestic economy. “Despite the fact that Nigeria is a signatory to a number of protocols on sustainable and renewable environment, the country had, over the decades, failed to protect the environment, ecosystem and natural resources. “Over-exploitation of natural resources and pollution of the environment, desertification are exposing the population to vulnerability and risks caused by climate change, among others. “Nigeria is well-endowed with forest resources, accounting for 2.5% of GDP. But Nigeria has one of the highest rates of forest loss in the world. Between 1990 and 2000, Nigeria lost an average of 409,700 hectares of forest per year on average deforestation rate of 3.5% per annum http://dailypost.ng/2016/09/05/nigeria-one-poorest-countries-world-80m-living-poverty-line-un-report/

Politics › Obasanjo To Modu Sheriff: PDP Is Dying, You May Handle Its Funeral by emamos(op): 6:35pm On Sep 03, 2016 |
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday warned a factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Modu Sheriff, that the party was “dying”, and he just be responsible for its final rites. Mr. Obasanjo spoke to Mr. Sheriff who visited him in Abeokuta on Saturday. He later explained to journalists what he said had been the subject of their closed-door meeting. “He called me yesterday and said ‘where are you’ and I said, ‘I am in the country’ and he said, ‘May I come and see you?’ and I said ‘my house is open to all Nigerians of goodwill and even non-Nigerians of goodwill. And I said, he can come’,” Mr. Obasanjo said. “I have said to my brother that I wish him well with the dying baby they have put on his laps because PDP is comatose and he was of course not in PDP, he has never been in PDP until now. When I was in PDP, I tried and encouraged him to come and join PDP, but he did not come, but the PDP they have given him now is a dying PDP, a dying baby, it needs to be in intensive care, otherwise, he will just be an undertaker,” Mr. Obasanjo said. Speaking further, the former president said he had not rescinded his decision to renounce partisan politics. “Let me make it absolutely clear once and again, I have not renounced partisan politics, I don’t belong to any political party, not to talk of his own faction of PDP or any other faction of PDP. But he came and I am very very happy to receive him and I said ‘look, for my own education, for my own knowledge, tell me what exactly is happening’, and he briefed me,” he said. “And, as they all want to say now, ‘well, you were once the father of PDP’, I was once the leader, for eight years, I was the leader of PDP but the PDP that I was the leader of is not the PDP of today. The PDP of today, if you can talk of a party again as PDP, its soul has been taken out of it and those who allowed that to happen are, unfortunately, either in the country or out of the country unperturbed about the fate of the party and indeed the fate of the country.” The former president said for democracy to thrive in the country there must be strong political party as opposition. “For our democracy to thrive we need strong political party in government and strong political party in opposition. Today, PDP cannot claim to be a strong party in opposition, I don’t know if APC can claim, at the national level, to be a strong party in government either. Now that is part of the misfortune of this country today. “That being the case, it must be the concern of all Nigerians that the present democratic dispensation must not be allowed to be derailed and for it not to be derailed, we must have a strong political party in government and a strong political party in opposition’. “When they talk about institution, a political party is an institution and in a democracy, it is a very important institution that we must all nourish and we must all cherish’. “But like I said, it is the responsibility of all Nigerians of goodwill and all friends of Nigeria that wish this country well that we should ensure that the institution that will underpin a virile, dynamic, thriving democracy are put in place,” he said. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/209760-obasanjo-modu-sheriff-pdp-dying-may-handle-funeral.html

Politics › Recovered Loot Not Enough To Revive Economy – Lai Mohammed by emamos(op): 3:32pm On Sep 02, 2016 |
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has explained that the looted fund recovered so far by government is far cry from what the country needs to revive the economy. The minister said this on Friday when he appeared on a News Agency of Nigeria Forum in Abuja. According to him, the amount of money recovered is always being made public. He said, “What we have recovered and if my record is right is about N78 billion, and 3 million dollars. “We have been able to block various accounts in which about 9 billion dollar is found but those are not money available to us because we are still in court over them. “The government spends N165 billion every month to pay federal civil servants, even what has been so far recovered will not even pay 50 per cent of the salaries in a month.’’ Mohammed assured Nigerians that every penny recovered will be judiciously spent and nobody could re-loot what had been recovered under the administration. The minister further explained that Nigerians should understand that what had been recovered was so little compared to what the people needed on a continuous basis. On budget release, he recalled that the Federal Ministry of Finance released N400 billion for capital projects, mostly on roads, railway, and power. “N400 billion seems a lot, but you must also understand that for three or four years contractors were not paid. “So, when we paid this money to contractors, they also use part of it to settle their own debt, they use part of it to recall laid off staff. “But the truth of the matter is that many of them have been paid, they are yet to mobilise to site and they cannot do so until the rains are over. Mohammed said that what the government owed the contractors was about N2 trillion. lalasticlala,mynd44 http://punchng.com/recovered-loot-not-enough-revive-economy-lai-mohammed/ |

Politics › APC Lists Buhari’s Achievements Despite Report Of Economic Recession by emamos(op): 12:57pm On Sep 02, 2016 |
Following the statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, which painted the country’s economy since President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office in bad light, the All Progressives Congress, APC, yesterday listed the achievements so far recorded under the leadership of the President Buhari. Recall that NBS had had on Wednesday released its quarterly report which confirmed that Nigeria is in recession.
The report had indicated an alarming decrease in the Gross Domestic Product, GDP, and increase in inflation and unemployment figures since Buhari assumed the mantle of leadership.
Reacting to the report, the party in a statement signed by its national scribe, Mai Mala Buni, assured Nigerians that the Buhari-led administration remained committed to resuscitating the economy in the quickest possible time and in the best interest of the people.
Listing the achievements so far recorded under the current administration, Buni said the nation was well on the path to quick economic recovery.
Accord to Buni, “The President Muhammadu Buhari administration has embarked on well- thought economic agendas, policy actions, appropriate fiscal, governance, and socio-political reforms to revamp the economy and tackle the nation’s current challenges in the short to long term.
“Under the new flexible foreign exchange policy introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in June 2016, we now have a single market-determined exchange rate which enables suppliers of foreign currencies to bring in their money and take the same out at market-determined rates.”
APC’s scribe stated that the new foreign exchange policy being implemented will ensure the “economy recovers in the medium to long term.”
He added, “As contained in the assented 2016 National Budget, the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is aggressively formulating and implementing policies aimed at diversifying Nigeria’s economy from oil to other sectors such as agriculture, mining and manufacturing.
“The administration is also proactively tackling increased attacks on oil facilities in the Niger Delta region which has led to disruptions in crude production.
“The President’s shuttle diplomacy has yielded positive effects on the country’s economic policies. As a result, several agreements concluded during the visits are positively impacting on key sectors of the Nigerian economy including power, solid minerals, agriculture, housing and rail transportation.
“The fight against corruption remains a top priority for the President Buhari APC-led administration. In spite of desperate attempts by some partisans to discredit anti-corruption efforts in some quarters, the war against corruption is being won and has been well-received and supported. The generality of Nigerians agree that the days of impunity are over.
“Through the full implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) by the President Muhammadu Buhari APC-led administration, revenue leakages have been greatly plugged.
“The new petroleum products supply and pricing framework which eliminated corruption-tainted subsidy payments has among others greatly solved fuel scarcities by ensuring availability of products at all locations in the country; reduced hoarding, smuggling and diversion substantially and stabilise price at the actual product price; encouraged investments in both Refineries and Retails; provided Government more revenue to address social and infrastructural needs of the country.
“In line with the critical infrastructural focus of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, an unprecedented 30 per cent of 2016 budgetary provision has been committed to capital projects.
“As the administration works assiduously to build a new solid foundation, credible image and pull the country out of the present hardships, the APC appeals for patience and cooperation from Nigerians.” http://dailypost.ng/2016/09/02/apc-lists-buharis-achievements-despite-report-economic-recession/

Politics › APC Not Responsible For Economic Mess; Obj,yar’adua, GEJ Are The Culprits – Buha by emamos(op): 9:18am On Sep 02, 2016 |
Amidst public angst over the appalling state of the economy under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari which has been officially confirmed to be in recession, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has said its hands are clean. The party rather asked Nigerians to blame the current economic mess on former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan, whom it accused of plundering the country’s resources for 16 years. APC said the three leaders, who ruled under the platform of the now-turned opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), had the golden opportunity to turn the economy around, but wasted it. Reacting yesterday in Abuja to the PDP’s call on Buhari to resign over his poor performance, the APC said that the party lacked the credibility and rectitude to make such a call. The PDP had, while reacting to the declaration of economic recession by the Presidency, demanded that the President resign his position for leading Nigeria into the crisis. In a statement issued by the APC National Secretary, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, the ruling party assured Nigerians that the Buhari administration remains committed to resuscitating the economy in the quickest possible time and in the interest of the people. The party reinstated its commitment to returning Nigeria into a strong economic nation, regretting that it met an already battered economy which was handed over to it by the past PDP administration. “The statement by the PDP is the latest in the party’s insensitive plot to deflect attention from the ‘voodoo’ economics and reckless fiscal policies the country was subjected to during its 16-year rule. “For the umpteenth time, the PDP lacks the moral basis and credibility to comment or condemn the government on the economy after the mess it left behind. Instead, the PDP must apologise to Nigerians. “The warning signs were glaring to the immediate-past administration but it chose the path of economic sabotage by looking the other way and squandering the country’s commonwealth – a reckless decision that has brought the country to its knees. “Nigerians will recall that even the immediate-past finance minister and coordinating minister of the economy, confessed that the zero political will to save under the immediate past administration is responsible for the challenges facing the country. “Happily, the President Buhari administration has embarked on a well-thought economic agenda, policy actions, appropriate fiscal governance, and socio-political reforms to revamp the economy and tackle the nation’s current challenges in the short to long term,” the ruling party noted. Recently, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, asked President Buhari to retrace his steps and stop the blame game to avoid going the way of the administration of Jonathan. He lamented that while Jonathan made oil subsidy billionaires, Buhari was making the same mistake of creating forex billionaires. Even the foreign exchange policy, which Sanusi criticised, was hailed yesterday by the APC. The party said that the President has introduced a new flexible foreign exchange policy through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in June 2016, adding that, “we now have a single market-determined exchange rate which enables suppliers of foreign currencies to bring in their money and take the same out at market-determined rates.” lalasticlala,mynd44 http://www.thebreakingtimes.com/apc-not-responsible-for-economic-mess-objyaradua-gej-are-the-culprits-buhari/ |
