Politics › The Zeal By Leaders To Steal Public Funds Is ‘everywhere You Go’ – Kukah by emamos(op): 10:33am On Oct 02, 2015
The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Rev. Matthew Kukah, on Thursday, advised Federal Government to appoint leaders who would be able to implement its policies.
Kukah gave the advice in Lagos at a programme tagged “The Platform Nigeria’’, organised by the Covenant Christian Centre in Lagos to mark the 55th Anniversary of Nigeria’s independence.
He said leaders should be able to use government polices to develop the economy in spite of the fact that some of these policies might not make the desired impact.
He added that “government should review its structure of governance because it has affected the ability of past leaders to function well.
“The country needs leaders who will facilitate development of the policies and not accidental leaders who are in the office to loot the nation’s wealth.’’
Kukah described the zeal by leaders to steal public fund as the MTN slogan “everywhere you go’’, adding that it was time leaders and their followers displayed positive attitude in all their endeavours.
He called for the establishment of a strong institution that would imbibe positive knowledge on leaders and the people for the development of the country.
Prof. Pat Utomi, an economist, who also spoke at the event, urged leaders to tap into all the sectors of the economy because the country was well endowed with adequate natural resources.
He, however, urged leaders to be more dedicated to the service of the country. (NAN)http://dailypost.ng/2015/10/02/the-zeal-by-leaders-to-steal-public-funds-is-everywhere-you-go-kukah/

I make a rich selection from the buffet and settle approvingly on a French wine. It’s still three hours to the boarding of that flight to London and on to homeland.
The plan: enjoy a meal, and settle down to Frenchwining while mentally visualising the delivery of my speech, “Hating Nigeria to Greatness” at Platform 2015 on Independence Day. Tweak the speech here and there. Envision the cadence of delivery. Envision stage management and body movement with Chris Oyakhilome’s stage practice always a guide. You see, prosperity Pentecostal Pastors do have their uses after all. I spend hours watching Chris Oyakhilome’s videos to learn from his uses of the stage…
When you have such grandiose pre-flight plans, do not sit in front of a flatscreen in the lounge. Your plans will be ruined.
It’s a local TV station. News time. Dominated by the impending Canadian election. Then they mention funeral rights for some people who were killed by a drunk driver. Then the anchor says that the three contenders for the Prime Minister position have been weighing in on the tragic road accident which led to loss of lives.
In Brampton, Ontario, two children and their grandfather were killed this week by a drunk driver.
They show footage of Prime Minister Harper regretting the loss of precious Canadian lives in the said road accident.
They show footage of the other contestants mourning.
Everybody is lamenting the loss of lives on the road and calling for stricter measures against drunk driving.
I marvel at the Canadian culture of life and thank God for the privilege of Canada.
But my evening is ruined all the same. The expensive French wine is now bitter. My food is now cold. It is going to be a long agonising flight to London.
Why is Nigeria made differently? Why is the Nigerian made differently?
So much value for the life of the citizen here in Canada. Above all differences, these bitter Canadian political rivals are uniting to value the life of the Canadian.
A drunk driving incident leading to the loss of lives is making national news?
Boko Haram will have to kill at least 100 Nigerian babies to make the news these days.
The drunk driver who killed Canadians on the road will pay. No questions asked.
Make the same guy a Nigerian and try to prosecute him.
Then you hear:
Is he the first Nigerian to drink and drive? How many people did he kill self?
Yorubas are worse drunk drivers and nothing happens to them
Hausas are worse drunk drivers and nothing happens to them.
Igbos are worse drunk drivers and nothing happens to them.
Why are you witch hunting him just because he made a mistake of drinking and driving?
Is it because he is a Christian? Is it because he is a Muslim?
Go and hug a transformer if you don’t like our culture. Go and die if you don’t like our religion.
Even in America and Britain, people sometimes drink and drive.
Besides, this so-called drunk driver that you are witch hunting has contributed IMMENSELY to the development of Nigeria.
You are just a hater for persecuting him.
So I ask my almighty God: who annoyed you the day you created the Nigerian?

Distinguished colleagues, I heartily welcome you back from our annual recess. I hope you had a very rewarding time with your families and your constituencies. I also hope that the period of recess has afforded you opportunities to reflect on the enormous task before this Senate in the months ahead. I believe that we have all resumed today with greater vigour and higher commitment to serve our fatherland and serve the cause of democracy. In the face of the great challenges that our country faces on different fronts, which urgently demands our attention, we must be prepared to put in the long extra hours to make up for the precious time we have lost for sundry reasons. As we resume today, we must demonstrate clearly to Nigerians that we are prepared to fulfill our mandates and put Nigeria first in all that we do, no matter how we feel about anything else. To behave contrary will amount to a betrayal of the confidence repose on us by our constituencies and our country as a whole.
Let me seize this moment to register my deep sadness over the death of yet-to-be-determined number of pilgrims who lost their lives in the tragic events that happened in Saudi Arabia during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage. May the Almighty Allah grant them eternal salvation and comfort their families. Even though the incident in Mecca has global ramification, we must pursue a Nigerian angle to it. By so doing, we would begin to demonstrate to Nigerians and to the world that Nigeria cares about its people and will take care of its people wherever they may be. Pursuant to this, the Senate shall seek to determine the exact number of Nigerian lives lost in the incidents and through the Federal Government of Nigeria, work with the Saudi authorities to determine the remote and immediate cause of the tragedy with the general aim of averting such occurrence in the future.
On the September 17, 2015, we woke to the shocking news of a military coup in Burkina Faso. This is a monster, which we thought has been wiped off the West African political landscape forever. I therefore, commend the prompt response of the leaders of ECOWAS, not only in unanimously condemning the coup, but in pushing hard to ensure that the constitutional order is restored in that country. A threat to democracy anywhere, is a threat to democracy everywhere. We must therefore remain vigilant and leave no one in doubt that only democratically elected government would be accepted on our Continent and our Sub-region.
During the recess, I attended with some of our colleagues, the Inter-Parliamentary Union Conference in New York, United States. The high point of that visit for me was the conversation on Boko Haram and mobilisation of global support for Nigeria, especially in dealing with the serious challenges of Internally Displaced Persons and the overall development of the North East of our country. I argued that the significant military success that has been achieved under President Muhammadu Buhari must now be complemented by a robust economic strategy in form of a Global Infrastructure and Development Fund that can deliver the vital services needed by the IDPs today, and the key infrastructure they would need to live a more meaningful and more secured life in the future: homes, hospitals, schools and, of course, jobs. Even though the evolution of Boko Haram has been regional and it is primarily a Nigerian problem; the consequences in human catastrophe implicates the whole of humanity and therefore demands a global scale solution, which can only happen with the support of our richest global partners and the biggest companies around the world. The call for a Global Infrastructure and Development Fund for the North-East of Nigeria, is not only an appeal to our common humanity, but a call for a global platform that would demonstrate to Boko Haram and other terrorist groups everywhere that the whole world is united against them, and will ultimately defeat them.

Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has said the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, is determined to stamp out corruption and solve power problem, which have become an incessant problem in Nigeria.

Osinbajo said this in his address on Tuesday at the seventh convocation of the Redeemer’s University, Ede in Osun State.

The vice president said the members of the administration who were daily being confronted with the negative effect of years of massive theft of the nation’s resources were convinced that Nigeria needed to stop corruption for it to survive.
He said, ” Most importantly, we must defeat the scourge that has brought us to our knees as a nation.

“For those of us who daily see the damage that theft and wastage of public resources have done to us as a nation, we agree with President Muhammadu Buhari that if we don’t kill corruption, corruption will kill us.”

“We are determined to solve the problem of power in Nigeria. Regular power supply will open up industries, will help small and media scale enterprises to do their businesses without cost of petrol and diesel and their generators.

“We are determined to establish technology parks, these are specially designed places provided with power and Internet to young people interested technology as business to have a platform to operate from.”

He stated that the administration would also invest in agriculture to boost food production and to create jobs for millions of Nigerians.

To achieve this, the vice president disclosed that the Federal Government was cooperating seven states in the production or rice, cassava, cashew nuts and other crops.

All these, he said, were efforts of the administration to bring Nigeria to the level of self sufficiency in food production.

Crime › Police Inspector To Die By Hanging For Murder by emamos(op): 6:08pm On Sep 28, 2015
A Rivers State High Court has sentenced one Inspector Samuel Timothy of the Nigeria Police to death by hanging for shooting and killing a sachet water dealer, Onyekachi Nwasouba.

The court’s ruling is coming about five years after Nwasouba’s murder by the police at about 5am on November 10, 2010 at No. 34, Old Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

Nwasouba, who was a graduate of Industrial Chemistry, was branded an armed robber by the police while he was on his way to distribute his products to customers within the Port Harcourt metropolis.

The deceased was shot dead by a team of policemen led by Timothy at the front of his residence, even after he (Nwasouba) shouted to the hearing of the policemen that he was only a pure water producer and not an armed robber.

But delivering his judgment on Monday, the trial judge, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, declared that the convict (Timothy) demonstrated an act of inhumanity through his action.

Justice Enebeli, whose ruling took about three hours, however, discharged and acquitted one Corporal Moses, who had been standing trial together with the convict.

The judge stated that based on the testimonies of witnesses, including members of the patrol team in the case, the convict was an “Inhuman, trigger-happy policeman, who engages in murder; a hater of humankind and a merciless killer.”

Explaining that the killing of the sachet water seller by the convict was deliberate, Justice Enebeli, maintained that Timothy should die by hanging.

The trial judge added that based on the law and the circumstance surrounding the death of the graduate of Industrial Chemistry, he had no power to reduce the sentence.

“According to Section 319 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I do not have the power to reduce your sentence. That, you, Inspector Timothy Sampson be hanged on your neck until you are dead,” he said.

Justice Enebeli stated that Corporal Moses was discharged and acquitted because it became clear that the policemen on duty never conspired to kill the victim (Nwasouba).

It was, however, learnt that the convict had served 33 years in the Nigeria Police and two years remaining to retire before the incident occurred.

Politics › Saraki’s Poor Defence: Why He Should Resign Or Be Impeached, By Adeolu Ademoyo by emamos(op): 7:55am On Sep 28, 2015
…since, the Senate ought to be a chamber governed by men and women of high moral virtue and rationality, the Senate President-Olubukola Abubakar Saraki ought to resign honorably or be properly and legally impeached in order to save the honour of law making in Nigeria, for the Senate is not an ethnic chamber governed by men and women of sleaze who rely on ethnic and emirate clannishness to survive.
That Dr. Olubukola Abubakar Saraki should honourably resign as the Senate President or be impeached is beyond debate. Through the history of his past and present, he has brought dishonour to the Senate. While the court has the final say and we should wait for this, however the reasons justifying why Saraki should resign now or be impeached are factually overwhelming, while the defence of those who hold brief for him is miserably weak.
Those who defend Saraki range from journalists such as Olukayode Thomas, who tries to put an “argumentative” face on his defence of Saraki to Ilorin clannishness, and Ilorin clannish defenders such as the spokesperson of Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union, Mr. Abdulhamid Adi. The form of both types of defence is the same, for they both commit laughable errors in reasoning.
In his defence of Saraki, Thomas dances around while evading the substantive issue. Coming from the Sarakists, this evasion strongly suggests that the Senate President has no real defence of the allegation against him beyond deploying an irrelevant appeal to pity, a sense of “persecution” and legal technicalities, in order to stop the court process. Thus, for failing to address the substantive and factual issues against Saraki, Thomas only ends up strengthening the allegation against Saraki.
This is because Thomas is not saying that Saraki is not guilty due to the facts of the case. Rather Thomas is suggesting that Saraki ought not to be tried, or everyone should be tried if Saraki’s is being tried! While Thomas is correct in asking that corrupt people should face the law, it is a bad argument to suggest that if all corrupt politicians are not tried then Saraki ought not be tried. That all corrupt people should be tried and that Saraki is being tried are two different issues. Hence, Sarakists such as Olukayode Thomas are unhelpful for their failure to speak to the substantive facts of the allegation against Saraki. Thomas’ defence of Saraki ends up showing that Saraki has a case to answer, and he must answer this case.
What nails the Senate President and makes his case incurably bad, at least in the public domain, is his resort to ethnic self-help and clannishness of the Ilorin type. Nigerian rulers are known for their ethnic clannishness. For example, until he proves otherwise in the next four years of his presidency, the first faulty steps of current president Buhari has shown that there is no difference between his Daura clannishness-in relying mostly on Daura men and women (a bad action which Buhari himself defended poorly when he appealed to clannishness to justify clannishness!) in his first line of strategic appointments-and the Otuoke clannishness of his predecessor-ex-president Jonathan.
While Thomas is correct in asking that corrupt people should face the law, it is a bad argument to suggest that if all corrupt politicians are not tried then Saraki ought not be tried. That all corrupt people should be tried and that Saraki is being tried are two different issues.
However, the Senate President having lost any rational form of defence carries this clannishness and backwardness of members of the Nigerian ruling elite to a ridiculous extent when he appeared so comfortable with the ethnic and clannish solidarity visit of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU). Reports have it that the Senate President himself furtively sponsored this vain visit to himself!
During their clannishly choreographed ethnic visit, the spokesperson of the Union, Abdulhamid Adi described Saraki’s arraignment as “purely politically motivated.” His reason being time. In other words, similar to Olukayode Thomas’ fallacy of irrelevance, for the Ilorin clannish spokesperson Adi, the issue is not that Saraki is guilty or not of the alleged crime, his claim is that Saraki allegedly committed the crime a long time ago. Therefore according Abdulhamid Adi’s Ilorin clannish “logic”, Saraki is not guilty because the crime was committed a long time ago!
This sort of crooked thinking may be “valid” within the context of a clannish “logic”, but it is unacceptable to bring such clannish “logic” and crookedness to a modern public sphere. That a Senate President will be comfortable in the Senate Chamber with this overtly doting and sponsored clannishness is shocking. It shows too much desperation.
Senator Saraki betrays the fact that he is resorting to ethnic and emirate self-help when the spokesperson of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union committed a verbal amphiboly as he could not even remember the name of the Code of Conduct Tribunal. He called it “ Code of Conduct something.” The Ilorin Emirate, speaking through their son said, “we were surprised to hear that you (Saraki) are being asked to come to code of conduct something…(sic)…With God on our side you will come out clean from that something…(sic)”
Between the poor defence of Sarakists such as Olukayode Thomas’ and the clannishness of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union in support of Saraki, it appears that the Senate President, Olubukola Abubakar Saraki has lost all forms of rational justification and has no factual rebuttal of the allegation against him.
The question is: which “something” is the Ilorin Emirate spokesperson, Adi, speaking about? Was Abdulhamid Adi of the Ilorin Emirate Union not properly coached on what to say? If the Ilorin Emirate came on behalf of the Emir of Ilorin (as Adi implied) to show support for Senator Saraki, why did they forget a simple fact about the name of the court before which Senator Saraki has been arraigned?
This embarrassing amphiboly on one hand, and emirate, ethnic and religious self-help on the other hand show Senator Saraki’s desperation which further strengthens the fact that he seemingly has no strong rational and factual defence of the allegation against him beyond appealing irrelevantly to sentiments and ethnicity. Saraki is failing to use the law and the courts to defend himself, while relying on primordial forms of defence. This clannishness and ethnic taunting is an embarrassment from the nation’s number one lawmaker.
Therefore, since, the Senate ought to be a chamber governed by men and women of high moral virtue and rationality, the Senate President-Olubukola Abubakar Saraki ought to resign honorably or be properly and legally impeached in order to save the honour of law making in Nigeria, for the Senate is not an ethnic chamber governed by men and women of sleaze who rely on ethnic and emirate clannishness to survive.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has denied being a “go-slow” governor, urging Deltans to be patient with his administration in this early stage as plans and measures were being put in place to ensure prosperity for all people of the state.
The Governor, who made this known at the weekend after a closed-door meeting with Elders and Leaders of lka Ethnic Nationality in Asaba, noted that the group was an ambassador of the government since that was his (governor’s) primary constituency and as such would partner with government to develop the state.
He reiterated the readiness of his administration to work with Deltans in order to develop the state and improve on the well-being of all, assuring of his commitment to fulfil all promises he made preparatory to the last election.
“Deltans should be patient with this administration; gradually we will reach our destination of prosperity for all Deltans. l need lka nation and other ethnic nationalities in the state to partner with government to achieve its goal; this is my people and they should be ambassadors of this administration; we will all work together to move this state forward,” the Governor stated.http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/27/im-not-a-go-slow-governor-okowa/

New York–President Muhammadu Buhari in New York, United States of America on Sunday stated that the prosecution of those suspected to have looted the treasury of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, will begin soon.

The president also restated his determination to fully sanitise the oil industry and make it totally free of corruption and shady deals.
President Buhari spoke at a meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the 70th General Assembly of the United Nations.

He recalled that he had to reorganise the Corporation by appointing a new management, saying it was one first necessary step to take.
President Buhari also expressed gratitude to the Chinese President for the country’s assistance to Nigeria in curbing crude oil theft even as he applauded China’s interception of shiploads of crude oil stolen from Nigeria.

“We know your stand on corruption, and we are grateful. Your continued cooperation in curbing oil theft from Nigeria will be appreciated,” Buhari said.
President Buhari also hinted the Nigerian military had been re-trained and re-equipped under his administration, stressing that this was responsible for the steady gains the military has recorded against Boko Haram.

Also speaking, President Jinping told President Buhari that China which is already handling many projects in Nigeria in areas like railway, airports, agriculture, and in the Mambilla Hydro-power project, among others, will increase its investment in the country’s agricultural sector to support the achievement of domestic food security.

He also promised further Chinese investments in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, and more support for human capital development in the country

Business › How Frying Akara Took Me Out Of Poverty – Father Of Six by emamos(op): 8:19am On Sep 26, 2015
Abia State-born Festus Ukariwo, 51 and father of six, is gradually becoming a celebrity in Kuje, Abuja, frying akara alongside his wife, Ifeoma. The couple shared their experiences with AGBO-PAUL AUGUSTINE on how the trade pulled them out of poverty.

While Ifeoma, 37, prepares the children for school in the early hours of every workday, Festus on the other hand is washing the already soaked beans to be milled in the wee hours as customers will start to flood their Funtaj road sales point from 7am.

Workers heading to work and parents taking their wards to schools have made it a duty call to stop by the makeshift tent where Festus Ukariwo, 51, and his wife jointly fry beans cake (popularly known as akara).

The couple hail from Ohafia in Abia State and have 6 children with the youngest just a few months old. While frying Akara in Kuje in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) just like everywhere in Nigeria is a common trade among women, the determination shown by Festus has caught the attention of not a few admirers in Kuje.

Also the fact that Ukariwo is from the Eastern part of Nigeria and Abia State in particular, many people in Kuje naturally expect a different business from Ukariwo. The father of six, has however, decided to pitch his tent where he has the greatest strength.

LEADERSHIP Weekend visited the family of eight at their Kuje point of sales and first to speak was Ifeoma as Festus was away to grind the beans. The children were already dressed up for school with their fees and writing materials as well as general upkeeps are funded by the proceeds from Akara sales.

Sharing her story, Ifeoma said her husband was an Okada commercial rider in Kubwa, FCT and was always involved in accidents before moving to Kuje.

“When our church building was demolished in Kubwa, we decided to move to Kuje in 2013 along with our church. In Kuje my husband decided to leave Okada business and while he was thinking of what to do, one day he now asked me ‘why don’t I join you in the akara business?

“Initially, I declined the idea, I told him I prefer the Okada riding than frying akara but he refused that he was tired of the risk involved in commercial transportation. After series of quarrels, my husband told me that I should close my ears to gossips and concentrate on the family and the business.

“And since he joined me in frying Akara, the business has improved tremendously as my husband is multitalented and has a way of charming people with his customer service skills. More and more people continue to patronise us,” Ifeoma said.

Speaking to LEADERSHIP Weekend, Festus said he grew up in Cameroon and lived a mixed life and by the time he was done he decided to move to Abia State in search of a wife.

“I got married to Ifeoma in 2001 with the hope that things will improve for me but it never happened and it got me worried. At a point I wanted to return her back to her parents but sheer determination in her changed my mind.

“When we moved to Kubwa I decided to go into commercial motorcycling since I couldn’t secure a paid job and my wife was frying akara to support me because things were really difficult for us. We were poor, but I was unwilling to go outside my faith to make money,” Ukariwo said.

Narrating further he said after they suffered demolition in Kubwa, they had to move along with their church to Kuje which has been of great assistance to them.

According to Ukariwo, the decision to form alliance with his wife was borne out of his resolution not to ride Okada again and to help turnaround the business because he saw fortune in it.

“At first when I joined my wife in frying akara, many people mocked me and called me names but amazingly today I now give some of them money, bread and akara for free.

“Whether people talk or not food must be eaten in the house and remember I have six children who must eat and go to school and it all comes down to having money and that is why I went into akara business with my wife,” he said.

When Ukariwo’s wife went on maternity a few months ago, he was fully in charge frying akara in the morning and evening couple with getting the five children ready for school in the morning and picking them after classes. “The fact that I didn’t get conventional education will not be a barrier for my children; I will make sure they get the best I can afford for now.”

The couple further told LEADERSHIP Weekend that they make a turnover of about N5, 000 daily with a profit of about N2, 000 giving them a monthly net income of over N50, 000. “Frying Akara is not a man’s job but it is better than not doing anything at all,” Ukariwo said.”

While he has vowed not to go into crime to make money, Ukariwo’s desire is to get the necessary funds to expand the business to a full eatery while he opens another trade for himself to cater for his children’s education.

The multitalented Abia State indigene is said to be also good in carpentry, tailoring and other artisan works but lacks the necessary funds to harness in his potential in the field.

A few customers who spoke to LEADERSHIP Weekend praised the courage in Ukariwo in helping to turn around the fortune of his wife’s akara business. However, some called for birth control to enable him concentrate on the upbringing of the six children who have to be fed, clothed and educated.
