Politics › Emir Sanusi Strips Lamido Bayero Of Title by emamos(op): 8:44pm On Oct 28, 2015 |
The emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sunusi II, has stripped the eldest son of the late Emir Ado Bayero, Lamido Bayero, of his traditional title of Ciroman Kano and District Head of Gwale.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that a few months after ascending the throne, the new emir wrote to Mr. Bayero, seeking him to return to his duty as Ciroman Kano and District Head of Gwale.
Palace sources told PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Bayero’s refusal to either reply the letter or report to the palace, angered the emir. The issue however died down when Mr. Bayero was appointed managing director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
But when Mr. Bayero was recently relieved of his duty as managing director of the NPA by President Muhammadu Buhari, the emir directed the Emirate Council to write to Mr. Bayero again.
“When a letter was written to him again, he neither responded nor appeared in person to explain his reasons. “His Highness first reasoned that the local government of Gwale was too important to be left vacant, and so he elevated the son of Emir Inuwa to be the district head.
“And now the title of Ciroma is also stripped,” a top palace source said. Perhaps in order to douse tension in the palace, sources said, the emir however appointed Mr. Bayero’s younger brother, Nasiru Bayero, to replace him as the new Ciroman Kano.
A statement by Galadiman Kano, Abbas Sunusi, said the removal and the subsequent replacement were with immediate effect. Mr. Bayero was touted to as the heir apparent of the Kano emirship throne but lost to the current emir, who was then holding a mid-cadre title of Dan Majen Kano.
Since losing the coveted seat to Mr. Sanusi, Mr. Lamido banished himself to Abuja and refused to pledge allegiance to the new emir as provided by the tradition.
Despite concerted efforts by some notable personalities in the state to convince Mr. Bayero to pay homage to the new emir, Mr. Bayero stoutly rejected. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/192291-emir-sanusi-removes-ciroman-kano.html |

The Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai on Wednesday declared 100 members of the Boko Haram insurgents wanted. According to him, the arrest of the wanted members of the sect would help a great deal in the final push against the Boko Haram terrorists in the Northeast region and the country in general. Lt Gen Tukur Buratai who spoke at the lunching of the Anti-Boko Haram Terrorists Campaign materials at the Maimalari Barracks, Maiduguri, Head-quarters of the 7 Division Nigeria Army also displayed the photographs of the 100 Boko Haram militants. He solicited for the support of the general public to assist in the arrest and prosecution of the suspected insurgents who have allegedly unleashed terror on the people in the region. His words: “The fight against Boko Haram insurgency is a collective responsibility of all, including the media. These photographs of terrorists’ suspects are to be identified with their numbers attached to each of the 100 photos, while members of the general public could send in more information on the locations or whereabouts of these Boko Haram sect members that appeared in these special photo identifications. Each of the suspects must have either participated or involved in the ongoing war in the theatre operations of Lafiya Dole. “If any member of the general public identifies the location and whereabouts of these suspects, please contact these three telephone numbers in this launched anti-terrorism campaign materials in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital,” Buratai requested He disclosed that most of the suspects are teenagers, adding that only three are above the age of 70 years. Though he was not specific with an amount of any ransom placed on the wanted terrorists, Buratai however announced a handsome reward for any person with useful information leading to their arrest. Crime › Gowon: Boko Haram Insurgency May Not End By December by emamos(op): 5:42am On Oct 28, 2015 |
A former military Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, on Tuesday disagreed with President Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigerian military over the December deadline to end the Boko Haram insurgency. President Buhari had ordered the military to end the insurgency in three months, ending December 2015. But Gowon stated categorically that the war against Boko Haram insurgency might not end by December as being planned by the federal government because nobody can really talk about when any particular operation was going to end. Though the former Head of State expressed confidence in the military’s renewed efforts in flushing out insurgents in the country, he noted that it was out of place for someone to say it would end at a particular time. Gowon said no one could be certain when the insurgency would end. He however urged Nigerians to use prayers as an alternative and effective weapon to defeat Boko Haram, which is capable of changing the hearts and minds of the insurgents. Gowon, who spoke in Abakaliki shortly after an advocacy visit to the Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Dave Umahi, on the roll back malaria programme, enthused that with the present strategies adopted by the military in the fight, the insurgency will soon be flushed out. He further regretted the use of innocent young girls in the perpetration of suicide attacks by the terrorist group, noting that there were possibilities of ending the insurgency before the December 2015 deadline. According to him, “I can tell you this, nobody can really talk about when any particular operation is going to end. As a former commander-in-chief, I know this. Yes, you can say, you target a particular time, but it may finish before that time or it may go slightly beyond. To end it, that to me is the most important thing.” “The war against insurgency started during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan but the military just before the election did a tremendous job against the group which made it possible for elections to be conducted in North-east.” “Since then, with the coming in of President Buhari, work is also being done until the insurgents decided to be sending poor little innocent girls to do some of the crimes they engage in. But I can assure you that the insurgency would soon end. I have the confidence that very soon with what the military is doing at the moment, the group would be flushed out.” Gowon, who was in the state to seek the support of the State government in the fight against malaria and the four tropical diseases, urged Nigerians not to lose confidence in the military, reassuring that with the new Chief of Army Staff, the war would soon. In his remarks, the state Governor, Umahi represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Bernard Odoh, said sustainable development could not be achieved with such diseases ravaging the state and urged the group to decentralise the implementation of the advocacy process to enable the local government benefit from the programme.http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/gowon-boko-haram-insurgency-may-not-end-by-december/223980/ lalasticlala, seun |

Politics › Transformation Not Possible Without Good Leaders – Buhari by emamos(op): 6:36pm On Oct 23, 2015 |
President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the task of transforming Nigeria to a prosperous and respectable nation would be a mirage if the nation’s leaders do not adopt the right attitude. He also warned lecturers against using students as their laboratories for their doctrines or as cannon folder for their struggles in the society, adding that the task of grooming youths for national development devolves on the universities. Buhari, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Babachir Lawal, spoke at the 40th anniversary of the University of Ilorin, in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital on Friday. He commended Unilorin for its academic stability, quality education and infrastructural growth. He said, “Except our leaders get it right and adopt the right attitude, the task of transforming our country to a prosperous and respectable nation will be a mirage. It cannot be business as usual. I therefore call on everyone to partner with government to uproot the evils of corruption, graft, economic sabotage, criminality, delinquency and all forms of indiscipline from our society. “The task of grooming youths for national development devolves on the universities. I therefore appeal to our teachers not to use our students as their laboratories for their doctrines or as cannon folder for their struggles in the society. The children under your care must not be used as agents for the destabilisation of our society. Our universities must demonstrate high quality intellectual leadership that will engender political, economic and social progress so that together we might build a nation that will be the pride of all. “Government will continue to create employment and other opportunities for our youths to thrive. Apart from physical discipline, our universities should key in to the evolving ethical revolution, because without discipline, law and order, no society can make any meaningful projects.” Buhari said his administration recalled largely the fact that globalisation of market, interdependence of international systems, expanding roles of technology and high skilled technical, vocational and managerial leaders are the keys drivers of any national economy. Saying that Nigeria is not different, he added that in the area of knowledge-based economy, the nation could but key into this global trend by giving desired attention to the education sector.http://www.punchng.com/news/transformation-not-possible-without-good-leaders-buhari/ lalasticlala |

The face off between the Deji of Akureland, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo and the dethroned Eze Ndigbo, Mr Gregory Iloehike and Igbo traders in Akure was on Friday resolved following the intervention of the Ondo State Government. The cold war broke out last week when the dethroned Igbo leader allegedly disrespected the Akure monarch on issues that affected traders. However, the Akure monarch, who agreed that locked shops of Igbo traders be opened, insisted that the Igbo leader remained deposed until the Ondo state council of Obas will take a final decision on the chieftaincy title Igbo will be using in the state. Oba Aladetoyinbo took the decisions at a peace meeting held in his palace where Igbo leaders and traders were accompanied by top state government's officials to publicly apologise to him. The monarch also ordered the re-opening of shops at Moferere market at Ilesa garage but warned that no trader should agitate over headship of the market until Akure traditional chiefs resolve the matter among the stakeholders . http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/akure-traditional-ruler-igbo-leaders-crisis-resolved/223562/ |

Commissioner of Police, Mr Usman Tilli, said this on Thursday in Dutse while parading the suspect and her victims before newsmen. The Vice President was quoted to have said he had seen wealthy individuals who are being enlisted into terrorism. The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, in a clarification made available to journalists, said Osinbajo did not mention “rich Nigerians” in his comment. Akande said, “Comments of the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), in the above titled press release were taken out of context by some of the papers and some of the reports are misleading. “There was no mention of ‘Rich Nigerians’ anywhere in the release as some media reported. There was no reference to Nigerians at all. Also the Vice President was not raising any alarm of any kind. “The Vice President was talking about the mindless ideologies of violent extremism and terrorism, and not about mindless people as some of the reports stated. “He said such ideologies drew different people including those who were lured into terrorism with money and those who are well-to-do. “This clarification is to set public records straight.” Akande had in a statement on Tuesday quoted Osinbajo as saying that “I have seen people who are well-to-do being recruited into terrorism.”http://www.punchng.com/news/osinbajo-denies-saying-rich-nigerians-joining-terror-groups/ lalasticlala |

Science/Technology › KWASU Students Fabricate Anti-terror Weapon by emamos(op): 6:56pm On Oct 21, 2015 |
Three students of the Department of Aerospace Engineering of the Kwara State University, Malete, have fabricated prototype equipment, which if developed, could be used to wage war against Boko Haram insurgents.
The prototype equipment are rocket, quadcopter unmanned aerial vehicle and fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicle, fabricated by Abdulwasiu Ahmed, Abdulkadir Habeebellah and Abdulrauf Sarafadeen.. Ahmed, in an interview with journalists on the sidelines of the university’s 5thundergraduate research day on Wednesday, said the rocket and the fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicle could be used for bombing and other military operations.
He stated that the quadcopter UAV could be used for aerial photography, surveillance, event recordings and examination.
He added that it could be used as security device to support security guards in banks, companies, government and organisation’s buildings as well as in residential houses.
Ahmed appealed to the Federal Government, corporate organisations, donor agencies and other stakeholders to support them and other young researchers in their efforts to innovate technologies that could transform Nigeria.
The Vice Chancellor of KWASU, Prof. AbdulRasheed Na’Allah, and Director, Centre for Undergraduate Research, Dr. Grace Abolaji, emphasised the importance of research for national advancement. Na’Allah, who was represented by his coordinator on Research and Industry, Prof. Adebayo Oladimeji, urged tertiary institutions to engage in researches that would solve societal problems.
He stated that the quality of a university was measured by its research output, adding that research was generally more highly regarded than teaching, according to him, perhaps because it is easier to measure.
“Research is generally better rewarded, for example by promotion, because its results are usually more tangible.
“It is our duty as academics to be innovative and to generate new knowledge. It is our mandate as academics to develop methods of making new and old knowledge beneficial to the present and future generations,” Na’Allah said. http://www.punchng.com/news/kwasu-students-fabricate-anti-terror-weapon/[ |

Health › NAFDAC Closes Illegal Chinese Factory Producing Mosquito Coil In Kano by emamos(op): 6:49pm On Oct 21, 2015 |
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed up a Chinese company involved in the production of unregistered mosquito coils in Kano. The coils are sold to the public under the brand name: “Wavetide: Plant Fiber Mosquito Coil” and are sold in most of the markets in the state. Pharmacist Ake Ayodele Paul, NAFDAC’s Chief Regulation Officer, told reporters in Kano on Wednesday that the company was initially sealed on 28th of September, 2015, adding that its management had since declined to register the product with NAFDAC despite an invitation for them to regularize the production. Ayodele, who heads the Enforcement and Investigation Unit of NAFDAC, said that NAFDAC has no way of knowing whether the chemicals used by the firm is harmful or not since the product has not been registered. “We tried to check the chemicals and we discovered that the chemicals were labeled in Chinese. So, as an agency, there is no way we could tell whether the chemicals were poisonous or not.” “We even asked them to give us the details of the chemicals used for the production of the coils, but they did not seem to have enough proficiency in English to analyze the chemical components of the coils they were manufacturing.” “They told us that they were using one chemical, but we saw that some of these chemicals were green; some of them were in blue containers and in yellow containers… They claimed to be producing the coils in China whereas it is produced in Dakata here in Kano.” “For you to be producing an item here in Kano, with no [English] signboard outside your compound but choose to bear a Chinese address, certainly you are not doing something right.” He charged the public to insist on NAFDAC’s registration number before they buy or consume any product. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/nafdac-closes-illegal-chinese-factory-producing-mosquito-coil-in-kano/lalasticlala,seun |
Crime › Trader, 37, Docked For Allegedly Hypnotising Woman, Duping Her N700,000 by emamos(op): 1:20pm On Oct 21, 2015 |
A trader, Elijah Kingsley, 37, on Wednesday appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, charged with hypnotising a woman and dispossessing her of N700,000.
Kingsley, who lives at No. 4, Fadayomi St. Ojota in Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining by false pretences and stealing.
The Prosecutor, Sgt Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in November 2014 at Ojota Bus Stop. He said that the complainant, one Beauty Emmanuel, a student, had on Oct. 19 come to the Ojota Police Station to report the matter. Ihiehie said the complainant reported that sometime last year along Ogudu Road, she met the accused with another man who claimed to be a foreigner.
“The foreigner told her he had goods like laptops and phones for sale and that he needed chemicals to wash some dirty monies. “The complainant said that she entered into conversation with the fraudsters as they tried to convince her to provide money, adding that at that point, she became unconscious of what happened to her.
“She gave them N27, 000 on the spot and from there they started collecting more sums of money from her.’’ Ihiehie said that the fraudsters later told her on phone that they were washing a large amount of money and that she needed to give them an additional N500, 000 to buy more chemicals to complete the exercise.
“They also warned her that if she revealed this secret to anyone, she would vomit blood and die. “The accused kept on mounting pressures on her until she paid the money.
“The accused also introduced an alleged fake “pastor’’ to the complainant who told her that she was possessed by an evil spirit that would kill her unless she had an amorous relationship with the accused,’’ he said.
Ihiehie told the court that the complainant said the “pastor’’ insisted that she slept with the accused without protection so that his semen would cleanse her of the evil.
He said that the accused regularly had carnal knowledge of Emmanuel and further collected N200,000 from her.
The prosecutor said that after several months, the accused called the complainant on Oct. 19, to demand more money again. Ihehie said that Emmanuel reported the matter at the police station and the accused was, thereafter, arrested.
The prosecutor quoted the complainant as saying that she knew something was wrong with her while acting on the instructions of the fraudsters . She said that she was too weak to understand anything until she got help from a friend, Ihiehie said . http://leadership.ng/news/468752/trader-37-docked-for-allegedly-hypnotising-woman-duping-her-n700000 |
