Politics › Buhari’s Government Is For Unity, Integrity, Says Aisha by emamos(op): 6:01am On Nov 06, 2015*. Modified: 7:53am On Nov 06, 2015 |
Wife of the president, Mrs. Aisha Buhari By Christopher Isiguzo and Linus Okechukwu in Enugu The wife of the president, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, on Thursday declared that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari represents a government of unity, integrity, harmony, love and support. Buhari who spoke at inauguration of her Health Screening Initiative programme for the South-east zone held at the Queens School, Enugu, noted that since Nigerians in their numbers gave her husband massive support which culminated in his victory at the March 28 presidential election, the president in turn had affirmed his commitment to ensuring unity and integrity in governance. Mrs. Buhari said a total of 2000 women were expected to pass through the health screening programme in Enugu State, disclosing that already the project had been flagged off in the South-south and North-east zones. The women were screened of different ailments. According to her, the pet project which took off shortly after the inauguration of her husband as the nation’s president on May 29 this year is intended to promote the health and wellbeing of women and children across the country with special emphasis on the women from the rural areas. She said the project is a voluntary one with the sole intention of rendering selfless service to humanity, explaining that even the medical personnel working with her were equally rendering voluntary services. She appealed to wives of the governors of all the 36 states to ensure that women from the rural areas took part in the screening exercise, noting that at the moment, the nation’s health care system was still improving and as such still required the contributions of all and sundry. “In line with this vision, I have recently demonstrated a desire and commitment to support the ongoing effort of improving the health and wellbeing of women and children through this programme to be implemented in collaboration the wives of governors of 36 states of the country. This initiative is intended to reach women particularly those in hard-to-reach areas with basic medical interventions in all the zones,” she said. Also speaking, the wife of Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Dalapo said the health of every woman remained paramount to the present administration hence the initiative by the president’s wife. ‘Our prayer is that our health will at all times remain intact to the Glory of the Almighty God,”she said. In her opening remark before conducting Mrs Buhari round the test rooms, the Wife of the Enugu State Governor, Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi said the medical screening of 2000 women in a day had never been heard before and therefore deserved commendation. While appreciating the wife of the president for responding to the cries and groaning of widows and less privileged through the health screening programme, Mrs. Ugwuanyi pledged her readiness to replicate the programme in all the 17 councils of the state. The event attracted the presence of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Dogara, wives of governors of all the states of the south-east as well as Kebbi and Benue States among other notable personalities across the country.http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/buhari-s-government-is-for-unity-integrity-says-aisha/224819/ lalasticlala |
Politics › Senate Not Your Supporters’ Club, Ezekwesili Tells Saraki by emamos(op): 5:36am On Nov 06, 2015 |
A former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has accused the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, of converting the Senate to a supporter’s club for his ongoing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
About 30 senators were said to have accompanied Saraki to the CCT on Thursday.
But in a series of tweets on her official Twitter handle, Ezekwesili said the Senate President was manipulating the Senate for “selfish” gains. The former minister said, “Finally, Dr. Bukola Saraki, such selfish ‘pocketization’ of a public institution that you are perpetrating is never sustainable. “Selfishness is converting the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria into a supporters’ club for your personal court case.
“Selfishness is a vice and not a virtue because it disregards the good of the greater number. Selfishness is being concerned, sometimes excessively or exclusively, for oneself or one’s own advantage.” http://punchng.com/2015/11/4269 |

Crime › ICPC To Interrogate Six Former Governors by emamos(op): 9:01am On Nov 05, 2015 |
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has commenced investigation into allegations of financial recklesness levelled against some former governors. To this end, the anti-graft agency will soon invite the ex-governors for interrogation at its headquarters in Abuja. The questioning follows reports of a special investigations ordered into their tenures, New Telegraph reports. The reports of investigations submitted by a crack team known as “Chairman Special Team,” is headed by the Head of the commission’s Investigation Unit. Those to be invited, it was gathered, cut across party lines. The ICPC had dispatched special teams to Jigawa, Rivers, Kano and Enugu states to scrutinise accounts of past administrations in the states. Other states whose past governments were under probe as reported were Katsina, Akwa Ibom and Oyo. “I will not mention names, but all I can disclose to you now is the fact that the Chairman Special Team have since been turning in reports of their investigations and very soon former governors will be invited for questioning on allegations of corruption, abuse of office and such other related offences,” a source told the newspaper. “They (the probe team) are coming back with their reports and the commission’s leadership is studying them with a view to instituting ironcast cases where substantial evidence to sustain charges are established. “The committee considering all the reports is headed by the head of the Investigative Unit. “Importantly, I want to let you know that the ex-governors will be invited in groups in such a way that it won’t be sectional. The petitioners will be invited alongside the governors to authenticate their claims. ICPC hardly files more than eight charges and our lawyers are always meticulous in their prosecution,” the source saidhttp://dailypost.ng/2015/11/05/icpc-to-interrogate-six-former-governors/ |
Politics › Edo Goes After Ex-governor Who Allegedly Stole $31m by emamos(op): 8:29am On Nov 05, 2015*. Modified: 8:59am On Nov 05, 2015 |
Edo State Government says it has uncovered $31 million allegedly siphoned from the coffers of the state during the administration of a former governor of the state. At the end of the State’s Executive Council, SEC, yesterday, Commissioner for Information, Mr Louis Odion said: “There is the issue of a fraud that was discovered while turning our books. We found that the $31 million was fraudulently taken from state coffers under a past administration in state. “The governor has directed the Attorney-General to commence legal action in that direction. So, in the coming days, the state government will take legal action to ensure that what was stolen from Edo State Government is recovered. When you convert $31 million to naira, it fetches you a whopping N7 billion. You can imagine what N7 billion will do in improving the human condition in Edo State.” Odion said the $31 million which was stolen from the people of Edo State for the transaction was designed clearly for criminal purposes. “This project was called Avrant Cement Company situated at Ekpe, near Ikpeshi in Akoko Edo Local Government Area. “The company was supposed to produce cement to take advantage of the large scale deposit of limestone in that part of the state. The company was registered as Abat Cement Company Ltd and this company had three shareholders. The Abat Cement Company had 75% shares, Edo State Government had 15% shares and 10% shares were reserved for ‘other Nigerians’. “Although Edo State Government was given only 15% share, 100% of the revenue invested in the company, $31 million, was taken from the account of Edo State Government. This money was withdrawn from the account of Edo State Government in defunct Afribank. “As the money was withdrawn, construction of the company started and all the major structures were in place, 90% completed. Machines were installed but there was no other contribution from any other source for the construction and procurement of these equipments. So everything invested in that company came from Edo State Government. “It is on record according to the shareholders agreement, those who claim to be first shareholders, Abat Holdings were given 75 million shares, representing 75%. The second share holders were given 10 % and the third share holder, the Edo State Government was given 15 million shares, representing 15%. “The agreement was signed and a former governor signed on behalf of the shareholders. The fruit juice processing company in Ehor was established by the same administration. The cost of establishing that company was N368, 458,195 and was invested in this company by the Edo State Government. “The company was owned 100% by the Edo State Government. The materials for the company were imported from England from a company at £310,000. The company was now sold, including the land and the three hectares pineapple farm which was also developed by the Ministry of Agriculture for N283.8 million. “The company was completed and there was a test run. There was no reason to privatize it and it was sold out at a give-away price which only could have been influenced by criminal intentions. There is also the one at Ikpeshi, the Solid Mineral Processing Industry. This company which was also owned 100% by Edo State Government was established by the administration at N85 million . http://dailypost.ng/2015/11/05/edo-goes-after-ex-governor-who-allegedly-stole-31m/lalasticlala |

Politics › Nigeria To Sell, Buy Oil Directly, Cut Out Middlemen by emamos(op): 7:16am On Nov 04, 2015 |
Lagos - Nigeria will start selling and buying oil and gasoline directly to cut out middlemen and curb graft, the new managers of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation announced on Tuesday night. The major policy shift fits new President Muhammadu Buhari's plan to halt corruption endemic in the industry in Africa's biggest oil producer. The previous administration of President Goodluck Jonathan had ignored warnings from Central Bank Governor Lamido Sanusi that some $20 billion in oil sales over three years was missing from federal coffers, and instead fired Sanusi. Nigeria produces 2 million barrels of crude a day, according to the corporation's website. Nigerians consume about 9 million litres of gas daily, almost all imported because local refineries are inefficient. One barrel of crude produces about 30 gallons of diesel or fuel. A statement from spokesman Ohi Alegbe said the decision was made after a screening of previously used and prequalified petroleum product importers revealed almost all the 34 international and 10 local companies were middleman businesses. The shift is "a major steer designed to enshrine transparency and eliminate the activities of middlemen in the crude oil exchange", said the statement from the corporation's new management. One of Buhari's first acts as president was to fire all the old managers. Corruption that thrived under Jonathan's watch had favoured officials being sold entire shipments of crude at favourable rates so they could pocket the profits. The US Department of Justice warned Buhari earlier this year that one minister had pocketed $6 billion from oil sales. The massive thefts came as oil prices topped $110 a barrel. Now Nigeria is in crisis, with halved prices for the oil that provides 80% of government revenue and Buhari has complained he inherited an emptied treasury.http://m.news24.com/news24/Africa/News/Nigeria-to-sell-buy-oil-directly-cut-out-middlemen-20151103 |
Politics › ‘two Fighting’: Obasanjo Versus Soyinka by emamos(op): 5:46am On Nov 02, 2015 |
Both men’s lineages have Egbaland in common; Olusegun Obasanjo by paternal and Oluwole Soyinka by maternal lines. They both grew up in and around Abeokuta; Soyinka attended the Anglican-run Abeokuta Grammar School in the mid-1940s (before moving on to Government College, Ibadan), while Obasanjo attended the Baptist Boys High School in the early 1950s (by then Soyinka was at the University in Ibadan). We know that their paths crossed again in August 1967. By their accounts, both men met one evening in Ibadan, at Soyinka’s request. What exactly they discussed has been disputed by both sides; what is not in doubt is that whatever it was it ended up playing a part in ensuring Soyinka’s 22-month solitary confinement by Gen. Yakubu Gowon during the Civil War. A quarter of a century later, Soyinka may have had a chance to pay Obasanjo back; as one of the loudest voices amid a group of Nigerian activists who fought hard to undermine Obasanjo’s chances of a serious consideration for the United Nations Secretary Generalship, citing concerns about his human rights record as military head of state. A few years down the line, fate somewhat united them in opposition against the Sani Abacha regime. One man fled abroad, from where he waged battle against the dictator; the other one stayed behind to endure Abacha’s gulag, only just managing to get out alive. Soyinka would end up being as harsh a critic of the second Obasanjo government, as he was the Abacha junta. In July 2003, Soyinka issued a statement in which he accused the ruling party of harbouring “a nest of murderers”, and the Obasanjo government of working to cover up the persons who killed Bola Ige. Obasanjo replied shortly after with his own letter. Soyinka’s opposition to the Obasanjo government reached its apogee in the decision to spearhead the Pro-National Conference Organisation (PRONACO) as an alternative to Obasanjo’s Sovereign National Conference. Following yet another tongue-lashing of the President by Soyinka, in January 2006, Femi Fani-Kayode famously responded on behalf of the President, protesting that “it is always very difficult to reason, debate or have any form of meaningful discussion or dialogue with any person that does not believe in God.” You see, somewhere along the line, after his staunch Anglican childhood, Soyinka dispensed with the idea of a Christian God, and, in his own words, “gravitated towards a deeper knowledge of the orisha, which represents the Yoruba pantheon, very similar in many ways to the Greek pantheon.” He says he found that spiritual outlook “more honest than a kind of unicellular deity of either Christianity or Islam.” Obasanjo on the other hand never fully left the centripetal force-field of his Baptist beginnings, even when he jettisoned its monogamistic obligations; even when he championed, in the 1980s, the use of “juju” to dislodge the apartheid system in South Africa. (It may be argued that he strayed for some time, but his 1995-1998 spell in prison marked a spiritual turning point of sorts. Since then he has published at least three Christian treatises: “Guides To Effective Prayer” (1998), “This Animal Called Man” (1998), and “Women of Virtue: Stories of Outstanding Women in the Bible”). Now, the guns are out and blazing again. Two of Yorubaland’s – and Africa’s – most respected sons, have been feverishly loading and firing and re-loading their guns. Obasanjo, in his latest book – a three-volume set of memoirs published late in 2014 – dismissed Soyinka as being “surely a better wine connoisseur and a more successful aparo (guinea fowl) hunter than a political critic.” Ouch. In an interview that followed the publication, Obasanjo made it clear that he meant every word. “Wole Soyinka is a gifted man. I have always acknowledged that but he is a bad politician and I have also always said that; and that is my own point of view,” he said. “If I want somebody to give me the best wine, one of the people I will go to is Wole Soyinka and I know he has a taste for good wine and I said that in the book.” Now, Soyinka has decided that it will take more than an ordinary statement to tackle the thorny matter of Olusegun Obasanjo. He has written a book that he describes as “the nastiest” he’s ever penned. With “Between Defective Memory and Public Lie, a Personal Odyssey in the Republic of Liars”, he intends to “draw blood.” The book is meant to be a broadside against “lies” and “liars”, but it might as well have been titled, ”A Personal Odyssey in The Demolition of Obasanjo.” Both men are obsessed, not just with starring in the most compelling dramas of their time, but in writing and editing the post-script. (Each one has written multiple volumes of memoirs, which others have hotly disputed). These men will no doubt carry the fight to their graves. (Obasanjo has already promised to heartily welcome Soyinka to heaven in case Obasanjo dies first. And then he quickly threw in a Fanikayesque caveat about hoping Soyinka actually makes it to heaven).http://punchng.com/2015/11/3106 |

Politics › Presidency Insists Buhari Will Always Tell Nigerians The Truth by emamos(op): 8:07pm On Nov 01, 2015 |
The presidency has fired back at the PDP spokesman, Olisa Metuh over his allegation that President Muhammadu Buhari was “demarketing Nigeria”. In a statement on Sunday by Fermi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, he said “We restate for the umpteenth time to Mr. Metuh and his ilk that their attempts to distract President Buhari from the job he has been elected to do will fail. “President Buhari will remain true to the virtues of honesty, integrity, sincerity, incorruptibility and plain-speaking which endeared him to Nigerians and made them prefer his leadership that of a lying and deceptive PDP administration. “The President will not, in the guise of ‘marketing’ the country, refrain from telling Nigerians and the world, the emerging truths about the abject state in which years of plundering by a PDP leadership has left the Nigerian treasury and economy. “President Buhari will not in the name of ‘marketing’ or ‘attracting’ investors, follow in the footsteps of the ousted PDP Administration and its discredited officials who shamelessly lied to Nigerians and the world about the buoyancy and vibrancy of an economy they had bled dry for personal gain, when it was very obvious to the discerning, that the Nigerian economy was headed for serious trouble. “It is most unfortunate that instead of showing some remorsefulness for the harm done to the nation by his party, and giving genuine support for President Buhari’s efforts to salvage and revamp the national economy, Mr. Metuh persists in a vain attempt to remain relevant on the national stage by unjustly denigrating the President who continues to strive with all his might to alleviate and reverse the harm done to the nation by PDP misrule and corruption. “Mr. Metuh’s antics are futile. President Buhari cannot be distracted by a broken record. If the PDP spokesman ever has serious matters to bring to our attention, we will be prepared to listen.”http://dailypost.ng/2015/11/01/presidency-insists-buhari-will-always-tell-nigerians-the-truth/ lalasticlala |
Politics › Hausa Leader Tells Buhari To Repair Federal Roads In Igboland by emamos(op): 7:22pm On Nov 01, 2015 |
Alhaji Adamu Sokoto, the Chairman, Hausa Community in the South-East, has called on the Federal Government to urgently repair federal roads across the zone. Sokoto told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Owerri on Sunday, said that commuters in the zone were experiencing hard times as a result of the deplorable state of roads in the zone. “The condition of roads in the South-Eastern states of Enugu, Imo, Abia, Anambra and Ebonyi is deplorable and needs urgent attention. “Traders from other parts of the country who transport cattle, goats, tomatoes, yam and other produce to the zone are lamenting the losses they incur due to the bad roads,’’ he said. According to him, the deplorable condition of the roads has thrown some people out of business, adding that doing business in the region had become increasingly risky “But we have the confidence that President Muhammadu Buhari has the good intention to be fair to every section of the country because the Nigerian state is one entity,” he said. Crime › Kidnappers Were Giving Us Gala, Water – Rescued Medical Team by emamos(op): 12:06pm On Nov 01, 2015 |
The three medical personnel, including the former Edo State Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Dr. Phillip Ugbodaga, who were kidnapped recently in Imo State, have regained their freedom. The other two kidnap victims were Mrs. Anne Usman, a Matron in the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City and Mr. Sunny Omo-Alasa, a health worker. Narrating their ordeal to newsmen in Owerri, Mrs. Usman said: “When we got to Orlu that night, we did not know the right way to Uburu Ekwe. So, we hired a commercial motorcyclist to direct us. Just a few minutes after we started the journey, a sports utility vehicle overtook our car and blocked us”. Continuing, the badly shaken lady recounted that a young man that was armed with an AK 47 rifle, clad in the Civil Defence uniform, jumped out of their vehicle and ordered the medical personnel to get out of the vehicle. “Three of us were ordered into the hoodlums’ SUV. They quickly reversed and sped off to their den, through a very lonely road. All the efforts by residents of the community to flag the vehicle down that night, were rebuffed”, the woman recalled with grief. She also recalled that as the hoodlums were driving to their den, they were intermittently making calls to their colleagues, urging them to be on the alert as they were “coming with consignments”. “When we go there, they took our bags and led us into the bush. They ordered us to sit on the bare ground, under one big tree. They chained our legs. From October 16 until we were rescued, we were blindfolded. They were giving us Gala and water”, Usman said. Speaking also, Professor Nwauwa appealed to the Federal Government to provide the police with sophisticated and modern tracking devices. “This will easily assist the police in tracking and flushing out kidnappers, armed robbers and other criminals, even if they are in the bush”, Nwauwa said. He lamented that the drugs and other disposables meant for the free medical exercise, were all stolen by the hoodlums. Earlier in his speech, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu, personally commanded the special anti-kidnap squad that rescued members of the medical team. “While Dr. Ugbodaga and Omo-Alasa were set free Friday, Mrs. Usman was set free in the early hours of Saturday”, Mr. Enwerem said. According to the PPRO, the Toyota Camry car belonging to the medical team, was recovered the next da by the police and remained in police custody, while efforts were intensified to rescue the victims. Vanguard recalls that the three kidnap victims were among the 18-man medical team that were on their way from Lagos, to undertake a free medical mission at Isu local council area of the state, organized by a United States of America-based professor of medicine, Dr. Appolos Nwauwa.http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/kidnappers-were-giving-us-gala-water-rescued-medical-team/ lalasticlala |

The defecting members included over 800 personalities who were delegates at the recently concluded APC governorship primary of September 22nd and 30th in Yenagoa. This happened barely 36 days to the December 5 governorship election. The defectors were led to the venue by two prominent political bigwigs in the APC, Senator John Brambaifa and Alex Ekiotenne. The defectors were received by Governor Seriake Dickson; the Deputy National Chairman of PDP ( South-South), Chief Cairo Ojuigbo; Acting State Chairman, Chief Serena Dokubo-Spiff and the Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, John Jonah, among other PDP leaders. KANO, Nigeria (AP) -- Nigerian officials have ordered a boarding school closed and police are investigating a boy's allegations of brutal and repeated sexual assault. Authorities in Nigeria's northern Kano city acted late Friday after a nurse refused to treat the child unless police were informed because of the gravity of his injuries, his mother told the Freedom Radio station. Politics › Fayose: Practical Politician, Says Afe Babalola by emamos(op): 9:23pm On Oct 30, 2015 |
Renowned lawyer, Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), has described Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, as a practical politician who does not promise what he cannot fulfill. Speaking in Ikere-Ekiti during the convocation of the College of Education, the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), said Fayose could also be relied on. In a statement yesterday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, Afe also lauded the governor for his support for the college and his untiring efforts at repositioning education in the state. “I love Governor Fayose because he is a very practical person and dynamic. When he says he wants to do something, consider it done. He is a rare breed of politician. A former governor of Niger State said politicians must lie to be a good ones, but Fayose doesn’t lie. “That is why he won his election in all the local government areas of the state and won subsequent elections in a similar manner. I also appreciate his love for education and his determination to reposition I in the state,” he said. Babalola, who is a fellow of the college, said to have quality education, there must be good teachers. “You can’t give what you don’t have. We need more teacher training colleges in this country. When the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo wanted to start his free education policy, the first thing he did was to establish teacher training colleges. “I suggest that lecturers in universities must have background in teaching as well. That is done worldwide and it will improve the standard of education in our country,”. In his speech, Fayose urged the management of the college to look inward and find means of generating more funds for the running of the school. He promised to use his contact to get wealthy individuals and corporate bodies to assist the college in the provision of facilities.http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/10/fayose-practical-politician-says-afe-babalola/ lalasticlala |

He explained that the devices “will have a radii of operation and effectiveness such that suicide bombers within the perimeter of any security operative wearing the device, will be detected and the operative alerted either by an alarm signal with the coordinates of the suicide bomber." Politics › Your Appeal Will Fail, Ajimobi Tells Ladoja by emamos(op): 9:09pm On Oct 28, 2015 |
The Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has told a former state governor, Rashidi Ladoja, whose petition before the Oyo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal was struck out on Tuesday, that his appeal will fail. Ajimobi said this while addressing traders and artisans, who paid him a visit at his office in Ibadan on Wednesday. Making a reference to Ladoja’s decision to appeal against the tribunal’s verdict, Ajimobi said his mandate was of God, adding that no amount of blackmail could change the will of God and the mandate given by the people of the state. The governor stated, “When I heard that myegbon(elder brother), Senator Rashidi Ladoja, said that he was not satisfied with the tribunal’s judgment and vowed to head for the Court of Appeal, I said he should go to wherever he wants to go. “I want to assure you all and the good people of Oyo State that thousands of Accord Party and its candidate, Ladoja, cannot unseat me. This mandate is of God and popularly given to me by the good people of this state. “We must all work together to develop Oyo State. We must never allow enemies of this state to thrive again. We give glory to God that he has taken care of all the people troubling our state. So what should be our concern now is how to ensure that this state is taken to greater height.”http://punchng.com/2015/10/1928 lalasticlala |
