Imo govt commences recruitment of graduate trainees. The Imo state Ministry of Public Utilities, Public Safety and Youth Entrepreneurship has commenced the recruitment of trainees for the Imo Tobacco Control Programme. The Commissioner in-charge of the ministry, Dr Iheanyi Nwachukwu, said in a statement in Owerri on Tuesday that only degree holders in public administration or the sciences were eligible to apply. Nwachukwu called on eligible applicants to pick the recruitment forms from his office, adding that such forms should be returned on or before April 28. The commissioner said the graduates would be trained to become smoking advisors and specialist stop smoking advisors. He said they would start work immediately on completion of the training, stressing that it was part of the state government’s efforts to provide basic amenities for the people. (NAN) |

There appears a ray of hope for the Federal Government’s planned amnesty programme for Boko Haram sect members as a leader of the sect, Mohammed Marwan, has hinted that the sect is now ready for dialogue with the Federal Government. According to the sect leader, the reason the sect ordered the release of the French nationals its members took hostage was to demonstrate its readiness for dialogue with the Federal Government on the way forward in the offer of amnesty. Marwan, who was speaking in an interview with the Hausa Service of the Voice of America (VOA) monitored in Kaduna on Saturday, explained that he ordered the release of the French nationals who had been in the sect’s custody for about two months after a meeting with 11 other top members during which the decision was taken. He, however, warned that the agreement would be breached should the government continue its offensive against the sect members or attack any member of the Muslim community unjustly. According to him, ”those that were in our custody for some time, I gave the directive that they be released yesterday around 2.00 p.m. I gave the directive for their release as a result of some discussions we had amongst us. The discussions revolved around what the government came up with after their meeting with the Northern elders. “That is why I ordered that they should be released and allowed to go without being handed over to anybody. I said a vehicle should be brought so that they go back to where they came from inbetween Cameroon and Adamawa. It was as result of the many calls and the preparations ahead. That was why I gave that order after our joint meeting; 12 of us had met.” Commenting on the amnesty committee set up by the government, Marwan said it was high time the government stopped what it was doing to the sect members and the sect too ceased fire. “We thank Allah; we should all sit. They should stop what they are doing and we too should stop what we are doing. I also directed that no security official will be touched unless he touches us or the Muslim community; those who committed no crime, as we will revenge if they do that. But I have given that directive so that we would see how they will go about it. (So will it be) unless another confusion comes up again,” he said. |
BOSTON (AFP) – Officials believe they have identified a suspect in the Boston bomb attacks, using video footage from a department store and a television station, CNN reported Wednesday. The Boston Globe reported separately that authorities have an image of a suspect carrying a black bag at the second bomb site. Law enforcement officials were expected to give a news conference in Boston at 5:00 pm (2100 GMT) |
US investigators have arrested a suspect in connection with the Boston marathon bombings, CNN television reported Wednesday, quoting law enforcement sources. Details about the suspect were not given, but the arrest follows a study of videos taken around the area during Monday’s bombings at the marathon finish line. |
Women who go braless may actually be better off health wise, if results of a 15-year study in France are anything to go by. The brand new study shows that brassieres (bras) provide virtually no benefits to breasts and, on the contrary, may actually be harmful to breasts over time. Researchers spent all this time studying the breasts of over 330 French women, and concluded that wearing a bra does not prevent sagging or ease back pain as commonly thought and even warned that breasts do get saggier with a bra. Taking measurements with a caliper, the researchers found that by not wearing a bra, muscles around the breast actually strengthened and the nipple 7 mm per year toward the shoulder. However, they did not recommend all women abandon their bras since their muscles had probably already degraded. According to Jean-Denis Rouillon, a professor at the University of Franche-Comté in Besançon, “Medically, physiologically, anatomically, the breast does not benefit from being deprived of gravity.” In the study conducted at the university’s hospital, Rouillon and others measured and examined the breasts of more than 300 women, aged 18 and 35, taking note of how the additional support provided by bras affects the body over time. (It should be noted the study does not mention breast size.) Overall, they found that women who did not use bras benefited in the long term, as they developed more muscle tissue to provide natural support. They noticed that in women who went braless, the nipples gained a higher lift, in relation to the shoulders. When bras are worn, the restrictive material prevents such tissue from growing, which may actually accelerate sagging, the study concluded. A 28-year-old woman, who participated in the research, found that she breathes easier without the constraints of a bra. Initially, she was a little reluctant to the idea of running without a bra, but got started and after five minutes, had no trouble at all. Despite the findings, the researchers said it would be dangerous to advise all women to take off their bras based on the study’s sample, which may not be representative of the population. They cautioned women who have worn bras for a long time — several decades — from following the recommendation since they would not benefit from taking off their bras now. Nevertheless, being braless is still largely seen as the exception rather than the rule and most ladies may not be as ready to throw away their bras just yet. While going braless is fast becoming politically correct and fashionable, the undergarment industry has continued to come up with increasingly structured and expensive designs, raking up to $11 billion revenue every year according to Business Week. |

Obasanjo Girls Fall Apart as Ezekwesili Turns on Okonjo Iweala In a series of tweets released yesterday, the former World Bank VP for Africa, and minister of education, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili turned on her former ally, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who is the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and a former World Bank Managing Director. Ezekwesili claimed that Iweala had subbed her in a lecture she gave at the Future Awards Symposium where she said "We should stop having false debates based on wrong or no information. Sometimes, I think it’s deliberate" Upset by the alleged sub, Ezekwesili released a torrent of tweets where she hit back at her former colleague and friend. She also released former speeches by Okonjo-Iweala to back up her claims. Thereafter she again threw the gauntlet down and challenged Iweala to take her up on her demand of a public debate. |

The police in Bayelsa State have secured the release of one Corporal Lucky Ebebi who reportedly survived last Friday violent attack on the boat conveying some policemen to Azuzuama in Southern Ijaw council area in which twelve lives were lost. Corporal Ebebi, aged 31, an indigene of Esama in Delta State, who was believed to have been killed in the ambush attack by the gunmen which claimed the lives of 12 policemen was discovered alive Wednesday night and rescued by the police after an alleged payment of N1m ransom. Though the alleged ransom payment could not substantiated, he was freed from cops killers den alongside with one Indonesian in the swamp of Ukubie. Another expatriate identified as a Greek national was said to have died in the ex- militant den. Ebebi was admitted at the Emergency Ward of the Federal Medical Centre where he was treated for minor gunshot injury and discharged Thursday morning. He was said to have reported at the state police headquarters, Yenagoa for debriefing. A doctor at the only federal referral institution in the state who spoke anonymously said “Ebebi was treated for minor bruises and discharged.” Another FMC staff confirmed the development saying the police corporal was brought in Wednesday night. According to a source, the gunmen kidnapped Ebebi after killing others and took him to a militant camp in the creek. He said, “the process of negotiating for the release of the police corporal revealed the existence of over seven armed militant camps along Lobia, Azuzuama and other communities in the Southern Ijaw council area of the state. “The police went for their own Lucky Ebebi but they discovered two other expatriates in the den of the kidnappers who were supposed to be beneficiaries of the ongoing Amnesty deal by the Federal Government.” He added that the expatriates were suspected to be a Greek and an Indonesian but could not ascertained the one that died in the kidnappers den.
