The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced the suspension of scheduled stream two orientation programme of the 2014 Batch ‘B’ Orientation in six states billed to start on Monday September 1 due to the dreaded Ebola virus disease in the country. The Director General of the NYSC, Brig Gen Johnson Olawumi who announced the decision in Kubwa Orientation Camp in the Federal Capital Territory said the corps members deployed to Adamawa, Bauchi, Jigawa, Borno, Gombe, and Yobe States will be affected by the directive. Olawumi however assured the prospective corps members that they would not suffer unduly as the NYSC would ensure that they were not cheated in any way by staying longer than necessary at home. It would be recalled that the Stream Two exercise, meant for the affected northern states, is scheduled for Monday, September 1, to Monday, September 22. Corps members posted to Adamawa State will have their orientation programme in Niger; Bauchi corps members are expected to resume in Plateau State orientation camp, while those posted to Borno State are to proceed to the Nasarawa State camp. Other affected states are Gombe, where corps members are expected to serve in Benue, with Jigawa State corps members expected to have their orientation programme in Kaduna. Corps members posted to Yobe State are expected to resume at the Federal Capital Territory Orientation camp. |

Hundreds of former Niger Delta militants mostly of Ijaw extraction have asked President Goodluck Jonathan to declare his intention to contest the 2015 presidential election or risk being banished forever from Ijaw land. The ex militants, who gave the warning under the aegis of Ex-militant Phase 3 Leaders of Federal Government Amnesty Programme, said they were angered following what they described as “provocative and unwarranted comments” by politicians to intimidate their kinsman and hinder him from contesting the 2015 presidential election. In a resolution reached after a meeting held in Benin City, the Edo State capital, signed by its chairman and speaker, Godstime Ogidigba and Peter Edah respectively, they also called on all Nigerians to join hands with the federal government in its effort to bring to an end the activities of the Boko Haram sect which have continued to claim the lives of Nigerians. They said, “The call became necessary at a time like this when some individuals and selfish politicians are over-heating the polity, making provocative comments and saying Mr President promised them that he would run for just one term as if they are now the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “Therefore, we warn any group of persons or politicians that will attempt to stop Mr President from exercising his fundamental human right that this will put the unity of Nigeria at great risk. We, therefore, call on you to contest the seat of the President. And if for any reason you fail to contest come 2015, you should not come back home but remain in Abuja forever.” While expressing confidence that Nigeria will soon overcome the security challenges and the eventual release of the abducted Chibok girls, the group called on the citizens to support the transformation agenda of the Federal Government. |

Presenters on Nigerian radio and television stations are fond of ‘tongue twisting’ or speaking in unnatural, fake accents even though some of them have never left the shores of Nigeria. With reactions from some presenters. Love FM, ITV and now Star Time channel 331 TV presenter, Emma Bricks Oko, in an interview said that fake accents are put on by people with complex issues. Bricks is one of the best presenters in the country even though he has never considered faking his accent. “I’m a TV presenter; I don’t fake an accent and I have never dreamt of it. I don’t know what may come up in the future while in the profession that will make me do it, but to be honest with you, some people are born with foreign accents without travelling outside the country,” he said. But how can someone be born with an accent without travelling outside his country? He further added that “all professions have a way of making people outstanding if you are innovative. So if anyone who is practising or delving into the profession feels that’s the only way he/she can be noticed, then it must not be until he/she flies out of the country before he/she can get an accent. Moreover, TV is make-believe and sometimes it’s good you add an additional effort that is expected from you as a presenter. Why not ask a musician who wears all manners of clothes while shooting videos and cannot wear it in day to day life.” he asked. But former entertainment host and presenter with ITV and now CEO of Boss Entertainment, Popular with Jeff, says one has to be real in presentation. “Television presentation is all about being yourself and acting who you are,” he said.Whenever you turn on the radio, with the exception of Wazobia FM , all other radio stations have presenters who are in the habit of using fake accents or as Mathew Abu said, ‘them go just dey scatter fone dey go. Naija artistes too sef dey scatter the thing. I just tire. Like I know people wey never cross Cotonou enter Benin Republic for their life wey dey blow yankee accent pass the people wey dem born for obodo oyibo. What is really up with the fake accents for real? It’s pretty damn annoying especially when you know it’s forced. What is wrong with your regular Nigerian accent? Is it too local for you? Abi you dey form chasis person? I mean “warra heck man… I need some poraroes and some warer mehn.” “Seems like the folks outside Nigeria are the ones that are trying hard to speak pidgin and keep it down to earth and some (not all) folks in Nigeria are blowing the fone by force. No be by force to have foreign accent. ‘Just because you went to Yankee on vacation for 2-months, or you went to Dubai to go and shop doesn’t mean you should come back and be blowing fone like say tomorrow no dey.’ He added, “I do understand situations where someone has lived abroad for years, maybe for school or grew up there, and came back to Naija and is just used to pronouncing certain words in an accent. Those folks are excused, but those of you that went to Accra and came back and claim to be abroad, please spare that nonsense gist for someone that cares,” he concluded.Paul I. Adujie, a lawyer, asked, “Have Nigerians accepted an inferior status already?” “Why would Nigerians born and raised in Nigeria, who then emigrated from Nigeria to other lands, as adults, with legal education from Nigeria, suddenly assume foreign accents, in derogation to Nigerian accents? Why the preference for non-Nigerian accents? Well, some have said that, being identified as Nigerian in America and Europe has become burdensome for them, but what is the right thing to do? Be in denial? I have recounted the above to Make the following points: I strongly believe that everyone has an accent worldwide, and that Nigerians should not be ashamed of or embarrassed about our distinctive Nigerian tongue and accents, as our accents, our colour, culture and country are why we are unique. These are no accidents or products of scientific mutations! ’He advised. Americans and Europeans and everybody else have accents, and they do not engage in tongue- twisting imitations of Nigerian accents or any other accents, apart from theirs, not even when they are on Nigerian soil for business or pleasure, for a day or twenty-years! Are we running away from ourselves? The late Bob Nesta Marley said, “liberate thyself from mental-slavery.” While some Nigerians are rushing to give birth to their children in America and Europe, as an artificial insurance for their children, probably not realising that there are Americans and Europeans, born and raised in America and Europe that are poorer and more illiterate than the guy from my hometown and yours? Back to the Nigerians with fake foreign accents, some DJs and presenters talk with foreign accents, while presenting foreign music all day, every day, helping foreign musicians and companies popularise their culture, their music and business. Nigerian radio stations have essentially become the mouthpiece of foreign things. Selling and promoting Nigerian music is good business, why sell other people’s music? Mr Adujie, also emphasised that in New York City last year, where he is based, theatrical musicians went on strike, and city government reported a loss of tax of more than $10 million dollars; the strike was short-lived. This means, when we promote foreign music, we are not helping to develop ours,we are not putting money in our musicians’ pockets and we are not helping our government’s tax base. I have heard it all by way of adulterated Nigerian accents! Some Nigerians living in America are more Americans than the Americans themselves. Sometimes, especially when these educated middleclass Nigerians resort to imitating the lowly slang of the streets, it can be ridiculous! As they substitute improper words and improper pronunciations for common English words, for example ‘want’ becomes “wanno” or “wanrrow”; “twenty” becomes “twenny” or “twenree” or “twenrry”; party becomes ”parry” or “parree” and ‘later’, becomes “lay-rah.” Some Nigerian commentators have written on similar subjects of de-Nigerianisation, such as corrupting or abbreviating Nigerian names to suit American and Europeans ears and tongues? Derenle Edun is a Channel O Television presenter and once said his father tongue can never be changed even though he was born outside the country and is only half Nigerian. The TV host is natural and represents Nigeria very well. Whenever you sit with some of these presenters they are more local than the locals and blend very well. But when on air, why do they twist their tongues to fake accents like someone who ate hot pepper.. |
Why do moslems have more religious celebrations than Christians? I am just wondering. |

1. Palm oil storage business: storing palm oil during peak season and reselling during off-peak season is a great business that can fetch you alot of Money depending on the amount of capital you have. This is an aspect of business I love so much; in fact I’ve been doing this business for the past eight years. I know a lot about this business because that is the business of my mother. The business is very lucrative as you can have up to 100% and above profit. The most important thing about this business is getting the right information on where to buy, when to buy, how to store and when to resell. There are two seasons for palm oil, first between February and April, this period is known as peak season, and the price of palm always drop drastically which gives room for smart entrepreneur to maximize the opportunity. The second season is between October and December which is always characterize by scarcity and rising price of palm oil, during this period one can resell the stored palm oil and make a profit that can be as high as 100% or even 200%. There is technique that can be used to make more profit from this business. The technique is very simple and this is the technique: immediate after the peak season around July the price will go up and you can sell and make a profit of around 50-60%. The price will go down around September when most farmers will be selling their stored palm oil to cater for the school fees of their children starting new academic session. So as a smart entrepreneur, you can use the money again to buy at a cheaper price and sell all a high price during off-peak season. When you calculate your profit, it will be far higher than those that waited until the off-peak season alone. This is the method my mother and I have used and it has worked perfectly, but if you don’t know the right timing is better you stick with the normal method or you contact me for advice. 2.Soybean Storage: Storing soy bean during peak season and reselling during the off-peak season is another great and lucrative business that is yet to be tapped. Soy bean is leguminous crop with a lot of nutritional and health benefits and as a result of this it is being used by man as food and for making animal feeds such as poultry feed, fish feed etc. This farm produce is needed for fish farming and because of increase interest of people in fish farming, has made this produce a highly sort after one. This is a business that very few people know about and are getting a lot of money year in year out. For example, in 2012, a woman bought each measure (rubber) of soy bean for #120 during the peak season and sold it for #240 in just two month and the price kept on increasing. The peak season for soy bean is between November and December and the off-peak season start from February to September, imaging the amount of money you would make if you have money to store it and wait for the real off-peak season (any time from April upward) when the commodities will be so scarce and make up 250% profit. 3. Quail Bird Farming: If you are hearing about quail bird for the first time or you have heard about it before but you have not taken step to tap into this great business opportunity, you are forgiven. Quail bird popularly known as Aparo in Yoruba language (If you know the name in Hausa or Igbo you can write in the comment below) is one of the ancient bird which has a lot of health benefit. Quail bird farming is part of Poultry farming and they also lay eggs like chicks but it is not common in this part of the world. The meat and the egg of this bird has been reported to cure many diseases such as arthritis, tuberculosis and other 30 diseases. Quail bird rearing is five times better than chicken and turkey rearing, and I assure you that a person with 400 quail laying bird is better off than a person with 2000 laying chickens. That fact is due to the following reasons: 2000 quail bird will feed on the same amount of feed that will be taken by 400 chickens. They have immunity against many diseases, this implies that you don’t need to spend money on vaccine and that the business has a low risk. Quail bird mature earlier and start laying eggs after 7-8 weeks. Quail farming requires less labour. The space require for rearing Quail bird is small. They lay a greater no of egg of between 250 and 280 per year. With just 20,000 naira you are good to go with this business provided you have a space in your house where you can put the cage. With that 20,000 naira you will be getting a daily return of between #1500 and #2000 after the bird has started laying egg. If you have enough money, you can go into large scale production as this can turn you into millionaire within the limited possible time. For more information on how to start quail farming in Nigeria Read: How to Start quail farming 4. Tutoring Services: These services can take various forms, it could be home based where the person will need to be visiting and he or she will be paid based on the agreement between the two parties. He can have more than a place depending on his ability. But the second form is the most preferable for entrepreneur like us who wants to rake in a lot of money. In this case, you will get a tutorial centre at a good location and employ some people that will join you in the work. Getting a good centre may be a challenge but if you do your search diligently you will surely get a good one. You can start from your home if you have enough space or consult various school principal to allow you use their school. I assure you that if you market it very well and bring in some innovations that will make you own unique, you will be surprise at the amount of money you will be getting from this business. 5. Training Center: This is another wonderful business idea you can start with small money. This could be a professional training center r skill acquisition training center If you are the type with special talent or have some professional skills, you can go ahead and establish a training center register it and adopts various marketing strategies to get people and in no time at all you will be bringing in a lot of cash. This business has a lot of potentials to succeed because people of this country are now shifting their attention to skill acquisition because of lack of job, so that they can stand on their own. 6. Sales of Phones and Accessories: you might want to look than on this business with the excuse that a lot of people are doing it but I tell you people are really making it in this business and this business potential has not been fully tapped. A lot of people in this country have passion for technology and they are ready to spend money particularly on phones. What you need to succeed in this business is correct information on where to quality phones and at cheaper prices. It advisable you consult a person you trust, who has been in the business to guide you. If he is honest with you he will tell you where you can get these products at cheaper prices and most of this product can be bought from computer village in Lagos and other big market across the country but you must have the right information before you go into these markets to buy. I have good news for you as regard where to buy the product; the good news is that most of these phones can even be imported from abroad without leaving the comfort of your home. You can buy from site like aliexpress, ipmart.com etc at very ridiculous prices and the products will be sent to your address through courier service get more than 100% profit. You can start with capital of #20,000 if you want to start on a small scale. 7. Outdoor Catering Service: The demand for food will continue to be on increase in this country due to our large population which keeps on increasing day in day out. This business has a lot of potentials to be successful because no matter the condition of a man’s pocket, he must eat. Food business varies widely but I’m limiting it to outdoor catering service. If you have the necessary experience in this aspect of business, I will encourage you to start and make sure you make your own as unique as possible and the sky will be the limit. 8. Seminar: this is similar to training services but quite different because in this case you don’t need a training center Not all people like to sit down and read, even if they like some do not have the time, and yet they need to be furnished with the right information that will solve their day today problems. This is where a smart entrepreneur should come in and take advantage of these categories of people by organizing seminar. It may not necessarily be you that will give the seminar talk, you can invite a resource person to do that but if you can anchor it yourself you can go ahead. When doing this ensure you charge moderate amount of money and add value to the lives of the attendees that they will want to come when next you organize such a seminar. In other word deliver what you promise. Create enough awareness before the program and you will be surprised at the amount of money you will make from just a seminar. I have attended such a seminar before where the organizer went home with more than 300,000 naira in just four hours seminar. Note: To succeed in this business you must add value to the life of people and deliver what you promise. 9. Rental services: This is another evergreen opportunity that can be used by interested entrepreneur. This business is always evergreen because there will always be ceremony to do especially in this country where we like ceremony and entertainment. The business is highly lucrative, if you want to prove this fact, you can contact those who are already in the business and ask them some questions, if they will be honest with you, because they might not want to reveal their secret, they will tell you that it is very lucrative. The only challenge here is that this business involves relatively large amount of money but you can start small by starting from plastic chairs and tables and hire a vehicle that will help you transport them from your place to the venue of the party. 10. Show room: I must confess to you that this is one of the most lucrative and evergreen business in Nigeria and the world all over. This is due to the interest of so many people in the entertainment and sport especially football. One particular thing that makes this business unique is because many people love watching these matches at show room where they will have fun and discuss with their friends. Another thing is that this business can never die as more and more people, men, women, students, young and odd are becoming fans of most popular foreign league clubs. Any interested entrepreneur can tap into this huge business idea, introduce some things that will make your own unique and before you know it, you will be going home with lots of cash. You can start this business with a small capital of around 100,000 naira and expand as you get more money. Those are the small scale business in Nigeria that are very lucrative and evergreen and that can be utilized at any point in time. Please if you know any other lucrative business ideas in Nigeria that people can start with small capital or you have any question, kindly write in the comment below. See you at the top. |

The struggle for relevance and market share among mobile platform providers continues. Samsung and Apple are holding on to major market share and Techno is also making a stealthy incursion into the market as well. What has not changed is the fact that the customer is still king and the consumption habits are the determinants for mobile service and its add-on apps provision. The magic of constant innovation, advertising and persistence in this regard is what has continued to keep these companies alive. Ontario, Canada-based former mobile phone giant, Blackberry Limited, formerly known as Research in Motion, has announced that accessing Blackberry Messenger would no longer be tied to the ownership of a Blackberry phone. The news is one of the most significant in the industry thus far this year. Until recently, before the decline in the revenue of Blackberry Limited, Blackberry had a tight grip on the market and the sales and popularity in Nigeria was premised on the novelty that came with its being first to provide instant messaging. For once, it was a freedom of sorts from the cost that came with paying N10 for text messages within same network and N15 across networks before the recent change in price to N4. That users can now ‘port’ to BBM using their Android phones running on Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean and/or Apple phone running on iOS 6 and 7 means BBM has now become an independent messaging template. This recent stint by Blackberry is a posture that says it is succumbing to the reality of how things have remarkably changed in the industry. It is a sincere fight for survival, similar to that of an Olympian swimmer in brackish water swamp. What, however, we cannot take away from BlackBerry is its pioneering role in the field of mobile instant communication. Blackberry Limited, owners of the Blackberry brand, had redefined mobile telephony and social media use. News of the availability of BBM for other users first caught public attention last May; and after a long wait of five months, it’s finally available. Starting on Saturday 21st September, Android users can now download the application from the Google Play Store and iPhone users get to download same a day after. This would allow for chats on two of its main rival platforms — Android and iPhone. Shut out from this are Windows phone produced by Microsoft. BBM, as on Blackberry phones, allows users to chat, share files in audio and photo forms, keep conversation on in a group of up to 30 other users, broadcast messages to all users on one’s BB contact list, post status updates and read those of others, change display pictures at will and every user has an eight-character unique Personal Identification Number. These are the exact features it will be availing users who download same. All features of a good chat platform are also activated with this new offering of BBM — knowledge that the message has been delivered, read and is being replied or not by the receiver are available. BBM is popular and it is perhaps responsible for why, before the release date, app stores were loaded with several fakes. The first Blackberry device — an email pager — was available in the market in 1999. BBM was introduced in 2006, and by 2012, BB had sold 200 million phones, with its current figure of users placed at about 80 million. Six years down the line, a lot has changed. BBM now has to compete with several other substitutes for it — Whatsapp, Facebook chat, Google Chat, Viber chat and a number of other chat platforms. Mobile network providers have been the major loser in terms of revenues from SMS. BB Limited is the latest hit. Whatsapp, BBM’s arch rival, claims a figure of about 200 million users currently, a far one from BBM’s. Google is rumoured to be interested in acquiring Whatsapp, especially since it ranks as the second most downloaded app on Google Play. As BBM continues to struggle for a market share, this move may be a potent one in an attempt for a comeback. What is not clear is how this would affect the sales of Blackberry phones. To maintain growth, the company will be offering hardware and software solutions to other firms. For those concerned about privacy, it is only expected that the use of a PIN, which BBM offers, would appeal, as against Whatsapp and others which are activated using mostly a mobile phone number. Blackberry phones also have the all-touch screen device and physical keyboard model, which appeals to a section of the market. The Z and Q series phones are attempts to adapt sleek features that other smart phones are known for. The complaint has been about the quick draining of the battery and the dependence on extra battery or constant power source for BB users. For the African market, the flat monthly data tariff of the phone would still make it appealing. Thoston Heins, Blackberry’s Chief Executive, in saying “We will make BBM available as the premiere multi-platform IM solution all around the globe,” is anchoring this on the belief that consumers would either prefer BBM to Whatsapp et al; or desire to add it to their collection of apps. The reality is that instant messaging is no longer novel for Android and iPhone users. The download figure in the coming days would tell if this move by the smart phone company was a smart one. The industry would have to wait and see if several contacts would be transferred from BB phones to Android and iphones using the Bluetooth setting. If things go south, it may mean that the only place where Blackberry phones would remain popular is the technology museum. Already, 40 per cent of the company’s staff are expected to be dismissed before 2014. If this move falters, then may be the figure would be higher than this and would mean that BB is on a slow path to extinction. |
