The Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North, yesterday, met with members of the Boko Haram sect, including the alleged mastermind of the Christmas day bombing in Madalla, Niger State, Kabiru Sokoto. The meeting took place at the Kuje Minimum Security Prison, Abuja where many members of the sect are being held. Chairman of the committee and Minister for Special Duties, Mr Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, who led the 25 members of the committee to the meeting at Kuje, a satellite town in Abuja, told newsmen that the meeting was a confidence building measure between the committee and members of the sect. The meeting which was held in camera had been preceded by the committee’s meeting with different security agencies, including the Department of State Security, Nigeria Police Force, as well as the office of the National Security Adviser. In an interview with newsmen, the committee chairman said members of the committee had useful discussion with the detained members of the Boko Haram sect, promising that it will carry out its duties with all honesty and diligence. The committee chairman said: “We have had cause in the past to speak to members of Jamatul Alhus Sunnah and in doing so, we told them that members of this committee are people of proven integrity, accomplished Nigerians that have been carefully selected by Mr. President to come and do this national assignment. “We have had very useful discussions with some inmates that are being held here on the allegations of being either members of Jamatul Alhus Sunnah on accounts of terrorism or acts related to it. We want to assure Nigerians that this committee is poised to carry out this assignment with all sense of responsibility, honesty and with diligence”. He emphasized that the committee’s brief was not to secure or grant amnesty to members of the sect but to encourage dialogue and attain cease fire and peace in the country. “We do not have any grudges against anybody. We do not harbour any ill feeling or prejudices against anybody. We have pledged that in carrying out this assignment, we will do it with the fear of God, high sense of patriotism and nationalism. We shall be guided by sense of decency and the feeling of trying to ensure that at the end of the day there is peace in Nigeria. “We are still looking for ways of having dialogue; constructive, honest and frank dialogue with major stakeholders across board. And so we will continue to solicit the support and cooperation of not only the people that are considered to be directly or indirectly involved in these issues but other Nigerians”. He appealed to members of the press that in carrying out their reports on the activities of the committee, it should be done with all sense of patriotism. This committee will urge you to avoid reporting issues in a very inflammatory manner. He said: “We seek your support and if for whatever reason any information comes your way or stumble on news item that has the potential of raising a lot of provocation, please if you need to refer to us please don’t hesitate. We will clear any doubt, ambiguities as much as we can”. “I call upon you to assist the committee in dousing pressure, and create a fertile and conducive environment for parties that are involved in this impasse to have more confidence in each other so that by the time we begin to sit and have dialogue with them, all prejudices would have been removed from their minds”, he said. Many of the alleged members of the sect that met with the Amnesty committee were young men between the ages of 20 and 30, and they appear to have been using the opportunity of their incarceration to get some form of education as they were seen with notebooks, textbooks and pens.. |
Imo State Police Command recorded another success in its renewed fight against crime and criminals, following the bursting of child trafficking and baby factory syndicate in the state. Disclosing this to newsmen Thursday evening, at the State Police Headquarters, Owerri, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Katsina, said the Command has clamped down on illegal motherless babies homes, as well as rescued 17 pregnant teenagers. According to the Imo police boss, one of the illegal homes, Ahamefula Motherless Babies Home, located in Umuaka, Njaba local council area, is allegedly owned by a middle aged woman simply identified as “Madam One Thousand”. Mr. Katsina equally disclosed that during the police raid, no fewer than 11 minors, who were possibly waiting to be sold to prospective buyers, were rescued by the Command. The bizarre aspect of the police finding was that a 23-year old boy, simply identified as Oyibo, was fingered as being responsible for impregnating the expectant girls, whose ages ranged between 14 and 17. Apart from being in varying stages of pregnancy, the girls who equally looked malnourished and not properly catered for wept uncontrollably as they were paraded by the police in Owerri. Some of the pregnant teens. On how the Command burst the syndicate, the Commissioner explained that the illegal babies home was successfully raided by the “Ambush Squad” after a credible tip-off. “The prime suspect is now at large. She was was producing pure water sachets as a decoy to deceive unsuspecting members of the public about what was really going on in the premises”, the Commissioner of Police recounted. Continuing, Mr. Katsina said: “ When the police invaded the tightly secured compound, 17 minors were seen holed up in different rooms in the large compound with some of their children playing around”. The Imo police boss equally paraded the 55- year old security man, Mr. Uzoamaka Okoli, from Nempi, Oru West local government area of the state, employed by the fleeing owner of the babies home. The 23-year old Oyibo, who was equally paraded by the Commissioner, has allegedly confessed to being responsible for all the pregnancies. |

– German luxury carmaker BMW has issued a recall of 220,000 vehicles because of a defect in Japanese-made airbags installed over a decade ago, a spokesman confirmed Tuesday. The flawed airbags made by Takata Corp had several weeks ago sparked the recall of more than three million cars made by Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda. BMW’s affected cars were 3-Series models, including sedans, coupes and other types, produced between December 2001 and March 2003. “We have been informed by the supplier that there could be a problem with this airbag,” spokesman Bernhard Santer told AFP. “We have never had a problem … It is a precaution to ensure the safety of our clients.” The spokesman said fixing the problem would take about one hour in a workshop and would be free of charge. |

Kokoma singer, Omawumi, usually dodge any question that is directly or indirectly connected to the man who impregnated her just when her career was taking shape and many was looking forwards to her exploits in the industry. She traveled abroad, gave birth quietly and came back, still nobody was identified as the baby daddy. A few names have cropped up but none of them seem serious. Finally the identity is out... From what a source said, Omawumi was handsomely settled to keep the name of her baby's father a top secret. The reason is that the man is a sitting governor in one of the oil rich South South states and his wife is said to be very brutal; she "deals with ladies" who come close to her husband. It was gathered that Omawumi's child has the looks of the said governor and this is why she hardly go out with the child. The governor has big eye balls, he is dark and not tall. The source said the First Lady, that is the governor's wife, is already aware that husband had fathered a child with Omawumi. I hear she's mad at the development and has sent strong warning to Omawumi to "completely stay away" from her husband otherwise she will be sorry. As a result, about two years since Omawumi gave birth she has not stepped her legs in the state as she's closely being watched. Let me not drop the governor's name, but from my description you guys should know him. |

'Plan to erect walls on borders unreasonable. Security experts on Friday faulted the plan by the Federal Government to erect walls along Nigeria's borders, as a way of controlling the influx of illegal immigrants. A former Director of the State Security Service, Mr. Mike Ejiofor, in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH said the plan was unreasonable and unachievable. He said, "When I heard of that issue being debated at the House of Representatives, I said it's unthinkable to erect walls along Nigeria's borders. Even if it is in the North alone, I still do not think it will serve any purpose. First of all, it's capital- intensive trying to erect such walls. "What I understand is that we have legal and illegal routes. For the legal routes, you can erect some walls, about a kilometre on both sides to control the influx of immigrants. But saying you want to wall the whole Nigeria, is unreasonable and unachievable." Ejiofor added that it was necessary for the Nigeria Immigration Service and other security agencies to be properly equipped to man the country's borders, especially the notorious illegal routes that had been identified over the years. "We can secure some points as travel control points, we then use the immigration and other security forces on the known, well-used illegal routes," he said. The ex-SSS boss also said the Federal Government should instead, adopt satellite monitoring. Similarly, another security consultant based in Borno State, Mr. Hussaini Monguno, said erecting walls on the borders will have no effect. He said, "It will only create bottle-necks for immigrants. What we need is patriotic and well- equipped security agencies; stationed across the borders and the buffer zones. I don't know how they are going to fence it from Maiduguri all the way to Katsina. Borno State alone shares borders with three countries; Cameroon, Chad and Niger Republic. Fencing cannot solve the problem." The House of Representatives recently asked the Federal Government to build a perimeter fence along Nigeria's 3,140-square-kilometre borderlines with neighbouring countries to check the influx of illegal immigrants. In a resolution it passed in Abuja, the House said the borderlines should be properly demarcated "with sensors and cameras to help check illegal entry and to enable the Nigeria Immigration Service to have proper statistics of those entering the country" |
– “Good morning, girls!” Igor Fuchs exclaimed as he greeted his students at the start of English class in this southeastern Brazilian city. But this is no ordinary crowd and the curriculum, for the most part, is focused on sex props. Fuchs teaches English to prostitutes so they cangive a warmer welcome to tens of thousands of football fans headed here for June’s Confederations Cup, as well as next year’s World Cup. The city’s 80,000 sex workers are counting on brisk business as authorities predict 40,000 tourists will be in town next month for a total of three matches June 15-30. A whopping 140,000 are expected to follow for the 2014 World Cup. With that in mind, the Association of Prostitutes has been offering free English classes to its members at a local mall since March. “We teach basic expressions but also have demonstrations with erotic paraphernalia so they can learn the names, how to use them and propose them,” said Fuchs, a volunteer who also teaches Spanish and French. The goal, says association president Cida Vieira, is to provide prostitutes with communication skills to keep clients who don’t speak Portuguese happy — both during the upcoming sports extravaganzas and beyond. “We deal with ‘gringos’ (foreign men) daily on the streets and in discos,” Vieira said. “We want to train the girls so they can better serve them.” So far, 300 prostitutes have signed up. Attendance is irregular and older women like 55-year-old Maria Aparecida, who has been in the business for almost three decades, tend to come to class more often than others. “I have always wanted to speak English,” she told AFP. “I raised my kids by doing this job.” Demand is definitely there — on both sides of the booming sex trade. “Tourists are going to flock here and those who come from abroad like to spend,” said 26- year-old Vitoria, clad in a pink mini dress as she waited for work at one of many sex motels on busy Guaicurus Street. On average, she sees 20 customers a day in her tiny room, with 15-minute sessions costing between $10 and $25. Some of the women view learning English as a way of securing their livelihood down the road. “It’s important to speak English because one day I will quit prostitution to find another job and another language will help,” said Vitoria. But not all are sold on the need to speak English — or any other foreign language for that matter. “I have never had American or French clients,” said Yasmin, a transvestite, as he showed off some deft samba moves on Avenida Afonso Pena before rushing to negotiate with a client in a waiting car. “I know basic words such as ‘good morning’ and ‘condom’,” said 31-year-old Juliana across the street. “For the rest, I get by with gestures. All men are the same. They come for the same thing. No need for words.” Belo Horizonte is not the only Brazilian city taking steps to beef up its sex industry offerings ahead of the World Cup, which will be followed by the 2016 Summer Olympics. A shortage of hotel rooms has led authorities in Rio de Janeiro to invest millions of dollars to convert raunchy motels to accommodate the legions of tourists expected for the events. |

The National Chairman of Labour Party, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu has criticised Nigerians, especially, those in political circle for being disrespectful to President Goodluck Jonathan, noting that the president was the most abused ever in the history of the country. Chief Nwanyanwu who made the remarks while receiving the leadership of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, led by its Chairman, Dr. Yunusha Tanko and Secretary, Comrade Peter Ameh at the party’s national secretariat, expressed concern that Nigerians could freely abused Dr. Jonathan not minding that the office he is holding is the highest in the land. NLC President, Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar; President Goodluck Jonathan And TUC President, Comrade Peter Esele, at the Centenary May Day Celebration in Abuja On Wednesday NLC President, Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar; President Goodluck Jonathan And TUC President, Comrade Peter Esele, at the Centenary May Day Celebration in Abuja On Wednesday Nwanyanwu who was agonised by the development, said people should respect the office of Mr. President even if they don’t agree with the leadership style of the person occupying the office. According to him, “Nigeria is practising the presidential system of government; weborrowed the system from the United States of America, USA. When President Barack Obama was re-elected President of America, there were little skirmish here and there but all these fiddled out when he was inaugurated. “Since no American citizen has insulted Obama, but here in Nigeria, since inception of office, Jonathan is the most abused and criticised President and still continue to be. The party chairman who charged the IPAC leaders to bring into play the mandate of the organisation by ensuring that politicians abide by the code of the conduct by desisting from blackmailing and insulting political office holders in the land. Nwanyanwu said “we have to move from the name calling which is dominating our political life. Notwithstanding that so many people from different political platform are seeking for the same office, we must abide by the code of conduct of the game so that there won’t be violence. He said this new leadership of IPAC must try to ensure that all registered political parties in Nigeria come together to talk of ways of helping the nation to confront some of the challenges like the unemployment, problems of transport, with a view to moving the nation forward. In his remarks earlier, Chairman of IPAC, Dr. Yunusha Tanko urged political parties and politicians to be focused on issue based while campaigning for electoral offices instead of name calling and blackmail. He said the organisation has concluded plans to convene all political summit at the end of the ongoing familiarisation tour of national offices all the registered parties. He said, after these visits, the organisation will also embark on tour of State Chapters of all the parties with a view to taking the code of conduct to their domains. Source: VANGUARD NEWPAPER |

… Vows to curb trend through GIS Federal Government yesterday raised alarm over the growing unemployment rate in Nigeria saying that about 23.9 per cent Nigerians are jobless. This implies that over 39 million Nigerians are unemployed. Speaking during an interactive session on Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS) in Abuja, Co-ordinating Minister and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said that an average of 1.8 million youths find themselves in the labour market annually out of which about 250,000 to 300,000 are graduates. She noted that in the first phase of the GIS programme, up to 50,000 unemployed and under-emeployed graduates will be engaged by the end of the 2013 as interns in reputable organisations to build their skills and make them relevant in today’s workplace. The minister also noted that at least 1000 unemployed graduates will be engaged in every state adding that the programme will be scaled up to 100,000 in the second phase. According to her, about 1,937 firms have registered for the scheme out of which 1,371 were verified and 293 were approved while 1,078 were rejected for their inability to meet the minimum requirements. As for the interns, 84,772 of them made up of 59,872 males, 24,900 females and 329 physically challenged, applied. “As at date, only 1,159 interns have been deployed across the country,” she said. For firms to be eligible for the GIS, they must be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and must provide evidence of Value added Tax (VAT) registration and tax clearance certificates. Also, firms must be prepared to provide a mentoring plan for each intern and interns must be graduates between ages 18 and 40 years and they must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) or be exempted. For the interns, she said, they will be provided an orientation training to prepare them for the workforce. They are also assigned a mentor in their place of internship to provide direction and support their career development. Above all, the interns get a monthly stipend of N18,000 from the government for 12 months. Chairman of Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE-P), Dr Christopher Kolade, said that SURE-P is an intervention device to bring relief to those that suffered the hardship of subsidy removal. |
