ASUU Strike Looms Again As FG Pays ASUU Half Salary The Federal Government paid the lecturers under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) half salaries for working for 18 days in October. Speaking with the pressmen, , a senior member of the National Executive Council, said, “We were only paid for the days after the strike. I received a half salary. Other members are angry right now, they are blaming the NEC for calling off the strike.” Another member, who confirmed the development, said, “Yes, it is true, I received half salary. It seems the government is set to kill unionism in the country but we are ready for them.” The Academic Staff Union of Universities called off its eight month strike on October 14 after a lot of tension and tussle between the FG and ASUU. https://www.emeritushub.com/fg-pays-ASUU-half-salary/ |

Literary appreciation revolves around reading, understanding, analyzing and making judgement of a work of art. It helps in detecting the style, theme, diction, figurative devices, tone, and other elements of literature. Literary appreciation makes the reader get the meanings of a book, get the value and make it relevant in contemporary society. Also, it enables the reader to journey into the writer’s muse, thought, values and emotions when s/he is writing the work of art. It makes the reader go into details, in fact, at times, even more than the writer’s knowledge of his/her work. By reading a work of art – drama, prose, poetry – a reader is expected to study, understand, analyse and evaluate the literary work. S/he should be able to make critical judgement concerning what s/he reads. So, in any examination, students will be given unseen prose, drama or poetry, it is now left to the literary wit of the students that will determine his/her success in the aspect of making critical judgement about appreciation of a work of literature. The Benefits of Literary Appreciation Literary appreciation helps the reader think critically. The reader will have the opportunity to think about the effect of a literary work in contemporary society. It gives the reader value. By evaluating a work of art, the reader tends to learn much and know much and it formulates the reader’s knowledge. Literary appreciation helps the reader to undergo the feelings of the writer. The reader will traverse into the source of the writer’s disposition to write the work of art. Through literary appreciation, the reader will be connected to the emotion of the writer while writing the literary work. It shows the values and the beauty of the work of art. The essence of writing any book of literature is to give value to society. People tend to learn about different cultures, plots, stories, and settings used in literary works. And it makes the people understand the reason for writing the work of art. Literary appreciation enables the proper analysis of literary work. Not many books are embellished with the sauces (literary devices). There are many that really lack the elements of literature. So, literary appreciation will help people to make critical judgement about the work if it is literary or non literary. Elements of Literary Appreciation The elements of literary appreciation. I have discussed drama, prose and poetry with their types and elements and also figures of speech. All of them are essential in literary appreciation. First off, in any work of art, there are six important elements that I will first discuss here; they are; subject matter, background, setting, style, theme, literary devices. Subject Matter Subject matter is also known as summary. It is a detailed account, though brief, of the work of art. It is the issues or points that the writer discusses in the book. Each work of art has topics that are discussed or shown: the topics are the subject matter. It is the summary of the plot of a story. The difference between the plot and subject matter is longevity. However, the subject matter tries not to go into all details but the important ones in the work of art. Background No one just takes a pen to write a story, drama or poem. However, something propel him or her to put pen on paper in order to write. The background gives the issues that propel the writer to write the story. It gives the reader cursor to see things beyond what is written in the book. The background revolves around the setting, the issues that make the writer write the work of art, the reasons why s/he writes it and the points s/he is trying to make. For instance: Richard Wright’s writings center on the racial segregation that the black in America passed through in his lifetime. He wrote about their plights – marginalization, imposition, racial segregation, and other unpalatable experiences experienced by Africans living in American in the early 1900s. Setting Setting refers to the time and place of a literary work. Every literary work, either prose, drama, or poetry has a setting. It is noteworthy for any literatus to understand the time and place of a work of art. The place may be physical, spatial, temporal or psychological. The reader has to study the environment of which the plot takes place. It can be on a tree, in the house, in a palace, at the river bank, in a hotel, just to mention a few. In a bigger sense, it can be a state or a country or a continent. The reader must take cognizance of the place in a work of art. Also, to study the time is essential. A work of art can be BC or AD; it can be the time of monarchy, or the time of civilization. It can also be in any century. What makes the reader to know the time of a work of art is their dressing, the words that the characters or poetic persona use, the place that they live and everything that they do. Figure of speech is a phrase, clause or sentence that has an implied (deep) meaning. Unlike parts of speech which have a surface meaning that anyone who understands the language can understand, the meaning of the figure of speech is not easily known. The figure of speech makes someone a critical thinker and allows the person to know much about the aesthetics of language. Figure of speech is also known as rhetorical figure, trope, and figurative device. The List of Figures of Speech Simile Simile is a method of comparison that allows the similarity of two entities (objects) to be used for a vivid description. Simile highlights two different things that have the same similarity to create effect. Simile is derived from the Latin word, similis, which means similar, like. Simile uses some comparison words, such as; as, like, as…as. Examples: i. As cunning as a fox ii. The boy behaves like a goat. iii. It is as true as the gospel. iv. He talks as parrot talks. Metaphor Metaphor is a method of comparison based on the insistence that one thing is another. Just like a simile, metaphor also creates the effect of comparison by using the similar feature of two different things. Metaphor is from the Greek word, metapherein, which means to transfer. So, metaphor is the transfer of the attribute of the tenor (what is being compared) to the vehicle (what it is being compared to). Examples: i. Life is a stage ii. The boy, the lion of the field, is here. iii. You are the goddess of beauty. iv. The young woman is a pig. Personification Personification is the figure of speech that allows the attributions of human qualities to abstractions, objects and natural phenomena. In a simpler term, personification gives the qualities of human beings to the inanimate objects. It represents the human features in objects, and abstract ideas. Examples: i. The balloon is pregnant (only women get pregnant). ii. The trees wave their hands at us (human beings have hands, not trees). iii. Death lays its icy hand on the king (death does not have a hand). iv. The moon smiles at us today (the moon does not have a mouth to smile). Apostrophe An apostrophe is a figure of speech that addresses an entity that is not present in a work of art. The entity may be a person, object, abstraction or even natural phenomena, such as; death, love, hatred, rain. Examples: i. Rain, rain// go away// come again another day// little children want to play (the poetic persona addresses rain in this poem). ii. Twinkle, twinkle, little star// how I wonder what you are!// up above the world so high// like a diamond in the sky (star is addressed in this poem) iii. Death, be not proud, though some have called thee __ By John Donne in his poem, Death, Be Not Proud. iv. Dear dead father, I believe you have been asleep for centuries; wake up now, your children are suffering on earth. Hyperbole Hyperbole is the rhetorical device that creates humour. It can also be called exaggeration or overstatement, and sometimes, auxesis. Hyperbole creates strong feelings and great emphases. It intends to portray a statement comically without seeming to be literally true. Examples: i. I killed a lion with my hands when I was four. ii. Her sorrow is bigger than the world. iii. Bimpe’s teeth are sharper than a razor. iv. All the world’s dignitaries will attend my wedding ceremony. v. The whole universe will be excited when I graduate from college. Litote Litote, the opposite of hyperbole which means exaggeration, is a clever use of language that makes use of sentiment to show an understatement by using negative words to express positive meanings. Litote thrives in the use of understatement. It presents occurrences or wordings that seem insignificant, less important and not too good, but are essential. Examples: The writer uses his pen to fight a dictator. He can’t win. (Here pen is used as something not important, but it is a tool that can be used to project the evil of the dictator to the world) ii. You are not doing badly. (Affirming that the person is doing well) Litote embraces the use of irony and understatement to say something positive in a negative way without affirming it directly. Irony Irony is the intentional use of words that denote the opposite of what someone means. In other words, it is the statements or situations that give the direct opposite of what should be the reality. In irony, what happens comes on top of what should happen. Emphasis is on the contradiction of expectation and reality in which the latter takes the ultimate priority of the writer/author. One notable fact about irony is that it reveals the realities that are far to be true. Types of Irony Verbal Irony: This is the process of saying the opposite of what one means. Verbal means spoken. Imagine that someone who always gets the lowest scores in class asks you whether s/he is brilliant. And you say “Yes, you are.” That is verbal irony. Dramatic Irony: It occurs in drama. It is a situation where the audience in a play knows what a character or characters are not aware of. The audience has foreground knowledge of happenings in the events of the plot while a character is not living in the present happenings of events. For instance: someone pays assassins to eliminate another person in a play. The audience has known about the development. However, the person to be killed does not know. He is still going around, engaging in his daily routine. Situational Irony: it is the reversal of expectation in a situation or circumstance. It makes the occurrence of the opposite of one’s expectation. For instance: A child stole someone’s money while his parents were away. He expected his parents to beat him when they came back home. However, they did not beat him. They hugged him and advised him not to steal again. What happened is the opposite of what he expected. That is a situational irony. Rhetorical Question Rhetorical question as a figurative expression creates effect in a work of art. It lays emphasis on a subject rather than asking questions. It is used to persuade the audience in order to drive home the points of the author or speaker. A rhetorical question is a known fact to both the author/speaker and the readers/audience. Ipso facto, no one expects anyone to give an answer. Examples: i. Can we be in sin and say grace should abound? ii. Are you stupid? iii. Is Mohammad not a prophet? iv. If we tell, gently, gently All that we shall one day have to tell, Who then will hear our voices without laughter, Sad complaining voices of beggars Who indeed will hear them without laughter? Vanity by Birago Diop. Hypophora There are similarities and differences between rhetorical questions and hypophoria. First, they are both literary devices. Second, they both ask questions to lay emphasis. However, hypophora provides an answer to the question asked, that is, the author or speaker will provide an answer to the question. Conversely, rhetorical questions do not provide any answer to the questions. The other names of hypophora are: antipophora and anthypophora. Example: “What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.” (Palm Sunday: An Autobiographical Collage, by Kurt Vonnegut. Pathos Pathos is the experience or suffering of a character in a work of art which appeals to the emotion of the audience. It evokes the feeling of the audience concerning a character who may be passing through a tragic situation in a story. Catharsis Catharsis simply refers to the purgation of the audience’s emotion. It is a Greek word that means cleansing. Catharsis can only be found in tragedy, which often attracts pity, fear and sadness. It involves an emotional release in which the audience will experience renewal in certain aspects of their lives. For instance, in Othello, Othello trusts Iago that he believes everything that Iago says. This makes him kill his wife, and later kill himself. At first, you will PITY Othello. At a point, you have FEAR that he will do the unthinkable. He later kills his wife. Then, you will be sad about the tragic end of the play. However, the catharsis is that the play has cleansed you from acting on someone’s words without having any concrete evidence. So after watching a tragedy, its application to your life is catharsis. It brings the necessary renewal. It gives a state of liberation from stress, anxiety, loss, fear etc. Pathos is the experience or suffering of a character in a work of art which appeals to the emotion of the audience, while catharsis refers to the purgation of audience’s emotion. Many people often confuse pathos and catharsis with each other. However, they have different meanings and serve different roles in the elements of tragedy. In short, while pathos revolves around the suffering of a character that appeals to the audience, catharsis is all about the audience’s release of emotion. https://www.emeritushub.com/difference-between-pathos-and-catharsis/ |

It is now viral on social media that men should suck their wives’ breasts in a bid to avoid breast cancer. Thanks to the video interview of an oncologist that went viral early this month. Nonetheless, over the years, it has been speculated that the sucking of women’s breasts by men can help prevent or reduce breast cancer. The saying or speculation is unscientific. There is no scientific proof that women whose breasts are sucked by men have lower risks of breast cancer. This postulation are made by sexually preverted men who use the statement to lure women do their sexual biddings and some chalartans in the medical profession. First off, what is breast cancer? Breast cancer is the cancer that starts from the breast. Men and women can contract it. Nevertheless, men only have 1% possibility of having breast cancer. It can start in a breast or the two breasts. Actually, breast cancer occurs when the cells in the breasts grow out of control. The cause of breast cancer is not known. Nonetheless, it is believed that there are risk factors, such as;nulliparity (not giving birth), having first childbirth after age 30, hormonal replacement therapy, obesity, physical inactivity and alcohol consumption, that can increase the chance of someone to have it. Can Sucking Of Women’s Breasts Reduce The Risk Of Having Breast Cancer? Scientifically proven, women that breastfeed have a lower chance of having breast cancer. Breastfeeding, not sucking of breast by the men, helps reduce the risk of having it. More so, women that begin to mother children have a lower risk of having breast cancer compared to women who start giving birth at 35 and above and nulliparous women (Women who do no have their biological children). However, the idea of sucking breasts is highly welcoming and detective. When men suck women’s breasts, it helps the women to detect lumps in their breasts. When women discover lumps in their breast early, it fosters the aid to receive treatment which will make the disease benign (not posing any serious threat to health). Without the sucking of breasts, women may not detect lumps, and these will lead to having breast cancers, which is malign (posing a serious threat to health). So, it is advisable that women should allow men suck their breasts so that they can detect whether they have lumps or not. The Scientific Solutions To Breast Cancer Inspect Your Breasts Men and women should inspect their breasts whether there are any changes in them. The nipples of the breasts can change in colour, size or shape. They should do the inspection with a mirror. Any time that you observe changes in your nipples, or have breast swelling, yiy have better visit an oncologist. Visit The Physicians Whenever you feel any lump in your breast, visit the physician in no time. It is cancerous, very deadly, to underestimate a lump. It will lead to breast cancer. Early diagnosis will present any threat to health. However, late diagnosis is risky, and poses a big threat to one’s health. Whenever you feel that you have a pain in your breast, kindly summon courage to visit a specialist. Avoid The Don’t Though the cause of breast cancer is unknown, there are many risk factors that can make someone have great cancer. Taking alcohol, or worse still, alcoholism, obesity, eating too much fat and oil, lack of exercise always increase the risk of having breast cancer. Prevention is better than cure. Avoid any of the above listed risk factors, if you desire to have a lower risk of having breast cancer. https://www.emeritushub.com/does-sucking-of-womans-breasts-really-prevent-breast-cancer/ |

Chiasmus also known as chiasm simply means crisscross. It is the rhetorical device that gives balance to two clauses against each other. The second clause will be a reversal of the structure of the first clause. The words in the first clause will be inverted, not repeated. Examples: i. Never allow a fool to kiss you and you kiss a fool. ii. We live to communicate and communicate to live. iii. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. iv. A hell of heaven or a heaven of hell. v. Pleasure is a sin and sometimes sin is a pleasure. Antimetabole Antimetabole is a subtype of chiasmus. Anti means against while metabole means change. Antimetabole is the reversal of words in two successive clauses in the same way. There is an exactness in the reversal of wordings of the first clause in the second clause. The difference between antimetabole and chiasmus is; antimetabole uses the same wordings but chiasmus can use different words. A chiasmus can express the same idea by using other words. The Vice Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Akwa, Prof. Charles Esimone, has blamed the recent industrial strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as the sole reason why the institution found itself in 10th position. Unizik among all Nigerian universities took the tenth position with the recent ranking of the Times Higher Education World Academic Summit, New York, with University of Ibadan, University of Lagos and Covenant University taking the first, second and third positions respectively. Prof. Esimone said that UNIZIK had what it takes to rank higher if the school could present all the necessary parameters for the global ranking of all universities. He lamented that the recent industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities played an ignoble role in the school's low rating because four basic parameters of the ranking were not completed. Esimone said, “We did not reach the optimum. We would have been about sixth or seventh because I was doing what is required strategically with the supply of information. “What we achieved was just a work of faith. The basic parameters, about four of them, were not completed, including data about students distribution.” “The strike action did not allow the staff to provide the data needed. We thank God all the same. About four parameters we would have put in place to showcase what we have done.” https://www.emeritushub.com/unizik-vc-blames-ASUU-for-poor-ranking/ |
