EducationSettle Your Matter Out Of Court -- Court Of Appeal Tells ASUU, FG by Emeritus1200(op): 5:11pm On Oct 05, 2022
Court Orders FG And ASUU To Make Out Of Court Settlement

The court of appeal in Abuja on Wednesday has ordered the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities to bury their hatchets by setting their tussle amicably. The verdict was made earlier today in an ongoing legal tussle between the FG and ASUU. The judge made the verdict that both parties should settle for the out of court settlement for the interest of Nigerian students.

The legal tussle began when the Federal Government through the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige filed a suit against the ASUU in the industrial court against the protracted ASUU strike. The industrial court verdict came out against the ASUU and ordered the recalcitrant union to resume academic activities on campuses which has been halted for more than seven months.

However, instead for the ASUU to obey the court order, they filed an appeal to the federal court of appeal in Abuja, and obviously stated that they were not content with the verdict of the industrial court.

It is no news that the ASUU has been on strike since February 14. The federal government has shown a deafening ear to the plight of ASUU and is not ready to bargain for anything against its decision. Likewise, the ASUU are becoming more adamant to press home their demands and are blindfoldedly insensitive to the pains undergone by an average Nigerian student.

In the wake of the brouhaha, the federal government has registered two academic unions to resume academic activities on campuses. The two unions are the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA) and Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA).

EducationIs "Transport Fare" Correct English? by Emeritus1200(op): 7:51pm On Oct 02, 2022
The phrase, “Transport fare” is common among many English users. However, it is not correct. One of the commonest examples of bad expressions is: Give me Transport Fare.

As simple as the statement “Give me transport fare” is, it is bad English. Why? It is tautological. Tautology is the saying of the same thing twice over in different words, generally considered to be a fault of style.

The word, fare, is the money paid for a journey on public transport. The word, “Transport” appears in the definition of fare. So, it is incorrect to use the two words together.

It is right to say, give me the fare/a fare. Also, bus fare, air fare, taxi fare, etc., are all correct.

EducationRe: Is A Course Greater Than Others? by Emeritus1200(op): 8:49pm On Sep 30, 2022

EducationIs A Course Greater Than Others? by Emeritus1200(op): 1:31pm On Sep 30, 2022
Is A Course Greater Than Others?

“The duration of a course or the rigor in studying a course doesn’t necessitate any superiority. Everyone studies the courses that pleases them.”

No course is greater than others. People only have preference for some courses. All courses are equal. There is no logical parameter that a course is superior, though the durations of studying courses differ. The duration of a course or the rigor in studying a course doesn’t necessitate any superiority. Everyone studies the courses that pleases them.

Also, no department guarantees its students wealth or employment after graduation. There are successful graduates in all departments and there are others struggling to make ends meet. Being successful demands hard work and intellectual acuity to make the transition of knowledge to wealth. So, you can study any course that you have passion for.

However, there are professional courses and nonprofessional courses.

Many of our parents want us to become doctors, lawyers, engineers, lawyers etc. But some of us don’t want what our parents want. We desire to study Music, Theater Arts, English etc. Both of us —- parents and children —– are right. Nonetheless, we need to know the reasons why our parents want us to study some courses.

A professional discipline is a discipline that a person who is not in the field cannot practise. So, it is for the people who study it as a course. Conversely, nonprofessional disciplines are meant for anyone that is interested in them.

For instance, it isn’t necessary for someone to study English before s/he becomes a writer, nor is it necessary for someone to study Mass Communication before becoming a journalist. This means that people don’t just dabble in professional disciplines.

Another advantage of studying professional courses is that it gives the opportunity to secure lucrative jobs. Notwithstanding, studying a course doesn’t ascertain your success. What secures someone’s future is the much value s/he creates for people. There are people who studied nonprofessional courses doing better than their counterparts and vice versa. Professional courses take 5 to 6 years.

Professional courses can be found under the following faculties:

Faculty of Basic Medical Science

Faculty of Law

Faculty of Pharmacy

Faculty of Education

Faculty of Engineering

And courses like Accounting, Public Relation, Advertising etc.

EducationHow To Change Active Voice Into Passive Voice by Emeritus1200(op): 7:48pm On Sep 25, 2022
VOICES
Voice is the property of a verb that shows the doer or receiver of the actions. The subject (doer of the action) can stand in the position of the object (receiver of an action) through the use of voice. Voice makes the verb to be transitive and the sentence will be transformed in which the doer of the action (subject) can be put in the position of the receiver of the action (object) and vice versa.
1a. My mother beats him
b. He is beaten by my mother
2a. I took the book.
b. The book was taken by me.
In sentence 1a and b as well as 2a and b, you should notice that the meaning of sentences 1a and b are the same and sentences 2a and b. However, there is transformation between 1a and 1b as well as 2a and 2b. There are two categories of voice, which are; active voice and passive voice.
1. Active Voice: This is used to show that the doer of the action (subject) is the performer of the action. His/her name/gender must be mentioned. In an active voice, the receiver of the action (object) must receive the action that is demonstrated. Active voice is simply known with the grammatical structures.
Subject Verb Object
I saw him
My Olu hates his son
Biodun swept the floor
The active voice attracts the main verb, either in present tense (singular/plural) or past tense. The active voice can be divided into two namely, present active voice and past active voice.
i. Present active voice: This makes use of present tenses which can be singular or plural. Examples:
Samad plays the guitar.
The woman loves the man.
Their mothers teach them.
Our parents help us.
ii. Past active voice: This makes use of past tenses. Examples:
Samad played the guitar.
The woman loved the man.
Their mothers taught them.
Our parents helped us.
2. Passive voice: This is used when the receiver of the action (object) and the action (verb) are more important than the doer of the action (subject). In a passive voice, it is not necessary to mention the name of the subject. The object of the verb must be at the subject level in passive voice.
Biodun swept the floor (active)
The floor was swept by Biodun (passive)
Passive voice makes use of auxiliary verbs, especially primary auxiliary verbs, which are: is, am are, was and were. It is essential for you to know that past participles must come after the primary auxiliary verbs in passive voice.
Present tense Past tense Past participle
Write wrote written
Sing sang sung
Feed fed fed
a. I write the letter (active).
The letter is written by me (passive).
b. He sang the song (active).
The song was sung by him (passive).
c. The mother feeds the baby (active).
The baby is fed by the mother (passive).
d. He is washing the clothes (active).
The clothes are being washed by him (passive).
Passive voice can be divided into two, namely present passive voice and past passive voice.
a. Present passive voice: It makes use of auxiliary verbs which are present tenses.
The guitar is played by Samad.
The man is loved by the woman.
They are taught by their mothers.
We are helped.
b. Past passive voice: This makes use of auxiliary verbs that are past tenses:
The guitar was played by Samad.
The man was loved by the woman.
They were taught.
We were helped by our parents.

Notes.
1. Do not choose wrong pronouns at the subject and the object level of a sentence.
Our parents help us (active)
In the passive speech, the object ‘us’ will change to ‘we’ at the subject level.
We are helped by our parents (passive).
Do not forget the table below:
Subjective Objective case
I me
He him
She her
They them
We us
You you
It it.
My mother loves me.
I am loved by my mother.

The teacher beats them.
They are beaten by the teacher.

2. Be conscious with the choice of verb when you are given questions.
My mother praises them (active)
They are praised by my mother (passive)
You will notice that the subject in the first statement is ‘my mother’ and it attracts singular verb ‘praises’, while the subject in the second sentence is plural and it attracts plural verb (are). Hence, take note of your choice of verb.
3. Past participles can come after the verbs with “ING”
i. A woman is beating the girl (active).
The girl is being beaten by a woman (passive)
ii. He was washing the plate (active)
The plates were being washed by him (passive).
iii. My mother is feeding me.
I am being fed by my mother.
iv. The teacher has been beating him (active).
He has been being beaten by the teacher.
v. They have been doing the work.
The work has been being done by them.
4. Modal auxiliary verbs (can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, ought to, had to, must etc.) attract be in passive voice and are followed by the past participles of the main verbs.

Examples:

I can eat the food (active)
The food can be eaten by me (passive)

You will notice that the modal auxiliary verb (can) in sentence two is followed by BE and the past participle of EAT.

She will fry the egg (active)
The egg will be fried by her (passive)

They must visit us (active)
We must be visited by them (passive)

5. Anomalous Verbs (has, have, had) attract BEEN first in passive voice and will be followed by the past participles of the main verbs.

He has given Shola the book (active)
The book has been given to Shola by him (passive)

6. In passive voice, the objects and verbs are more important in the information given than the subjects. Therefore, it is at the speaker's convenience to mention the doer of an action in passive voice.

Example:

Frank kicked the ball very well (active)
The ball was kicked very well (passive)

The subject 'Frank' is not mentioned in the passive voice because what is done (action) and what or who receives the action (object) are all what is needed to disseminate the information.

Stanza

A stanza is a group of lines in poetry that have a particular length, meter, rhythm and rhyme. It is used for the division of the poem. An indentation, a line or a space can be used to separate a stanza from another. The ideas of a group of lines which form a stanza must have a point or subject matter.

Canto
Canto is used in a long narrative poem, such as an epic. It is the sub division of thoughts in a long poem, though longer and more expressive than stanza. It is very good to use in oral epics because it originated from the word, cantus, which means ‘song’.

Rhythm
Rhythm is derived from the Greek word ‘rhythmos’ which means measured motion. It is a poetic device that resonates with the flow of sound in a line of poetry. It emanates from the flow of words (stressed and unstressed syllables), pause in a line, phrase and clause that constitute lines of poetry.

Meter

Example: Hope is the Thing With Feathers (By Emily Dickinson)

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all

The bolded words in the poem are the stressed syllables.

Metrical Foot
Metrical foot is a combination of stressed and unstressed syllables.

Examples of Metrical Foot

Iamb consists of a metrical foot that has an unstressed (unaccented) syllable followed by the accented syllable. Examples: concern, award etc.

Trochee is the opposite of iamb. It first has a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed syllable. Examples: normal, John and, teacher etc.

Anapest refers to two unstressed syllables that are followed by a stressed syllable. Examples: comprehend, understand etc.

Dactyl is a stressed syllable followed by two unstressed syllables. Examples: obsolete, intimate, quarantine etc.

Spondee is a foot that has two stressed syllables.

Pyrrhic is a foot that has two unstressed syllables.

How Degree Certificate Can Be Revoked

The higher institutions of learning have the right and power to revoke the certificate of graduates. But, it should be on the ground of one or more academic misconducts and bad behaviors. Every tertiary institution awards graduates degree certificates based on the students' academic performances and integrity tests. No school will award a graduate whose integrity test is questionable.

Tertiary institutions frown at academic misconducts, such as, examination malpractice, falsification, plagiarism, abuse of credentials, admission fraud etc. And the school authorities cannot overlook the unacceptable acts or take them with a jaundiced vice. All the despicable acts dictate the revocation of certificates, even after many years of graduation.

A lot of prominent people have experienced the revocation of certificates in times past. Universitat Bayreuth revoked the German defence Minister, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg's certificate for plagiarizing parts of his legal doctorate. Also among numerous others, the University of Edinburgh revoked the Honorary Degree certificate given to the former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe. They accused him of deserving the education sector in his country and his tyrannical regime.

Reasons For Degree Revocation

Cheating
Cheating is a fraud. It happens when a student wants to pass by being dubious. It can occur ranging from copying from others or an attempt to copy in a given assignment, test or examination, to using unauthorized materials, written notes tucked somewhere, to having the examination questions prior to the exam date, to engaging in group sittings or collaboration in the exam hall, to programming the calculator for answers, using electronic devices for cheating, to impersonation etc.

Plagiarism
This is an act against the copyright law. It is the use of another person's intellectual work with referencing the owner or author. It is a serious crime under the law. Any graduate who plagiarizes another person's work is liable to see his/her certificate withdrawn without any justification. What qualifies a person as a graduate is his/her intellectual soundness. Ipso facto, anyone who copies the work of another person without giving reference to its source is lazy, fake and unworthy of the degree.

Course Materials
Alternating course materials is bad. Some lecturers put their course materials in book formats. However, some students and postgraduate students change the materials to soft copies. They tend to use the materials without buying them. This can lead to expulsion of degree revocation, if caught. Some engage in selling of lecturers course materials, releasing handouts et al.

Theft and Damaging Of The School Property.
Stealing of the school's and someone's properties is a big crime. If the mystery of a stolen property or a property damaged by a former student is revealed after many years, the management will investigate the matter. And they have the power to revoke the property of anyone that is culpable.

Abuse of Credentials
This, at first, can happen when someone uses an honorary degree to secure employment. The university authority can rescind the degree. Another one occurs when someone uses a doctorate degree to secure employment as a medical doctor. This may warrant a revocation from the tertiary institution.

Lack of Integrity or Humanity
The school authority can revoke the degree of someone that is brutal, such like a dictator or totalitarian. Also, the school can revoke the certificate of someone who is popular for being bad.

The Consequence Of Certificate Revocation On Graduates

Loss of Job
These often affect graduates who use their certificate to secure employment. Recruitment into positions in organizations comes with the quality of degree of the graduates. The certificate is a proven testament of the graduates' skills, knowledge, capacity and integrity test. So, any time a higher institution revokes someone's certificate, such a person will lose his/her job because the credibility of his competence has been revoked.

Lack Of Trust
In fact, the noise that encompasses the proceeding of the revocation of certificate births disrespect one's integrity. When found guilty, the graduate will lose the trust that people have for him/her. They will see that person as fraudulent. This may have much psychological effect on the graduate, and it may lead to stigmatization from people. Above all, no organization will like to associate with the person again.

Legal Prosecution
In a case when someone uses a doctorate of English and Literature to be employed as a medical doctor, that is an abuse of credentials. Such a person can face the full wrath of the law, if the employer charges him/her to court.

The Way To Avoid Revocation Of Degree

The school authority always lets the alleged person know about the impending revocation of certificates. They will tell him or her his offence and even question him. No one wakes up to see his academic degree rescinded unless s/he has prior knowledge of it. So, immediately the affected person hears of it. S/he should seek legal counsel from his lawyer. The lawyer should be proactive before the matter comes to the hearing of the public. By doing this, if the affected person is not guilty, it will save his/her image. Nonetheless, there is not much that can be done if the person is guilty. This means that the best way to avoid revocation of a certificate is by being honest and law-abiding in everything in life, not just on campus alone.

EducationIndustrial Court Orders ASUU To Call Off Strike by Emeritus1200(op): 1:34pm On Sep 21, 2022
The National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) has ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU to call off its ongoing industrial action.

It is recalled that the Federal Government through the Minister Of Labour, Chris Ngige, has sued the ASUU to the industrial court after every sort of negotiations and promises proved abortive.

The ASUU has been on strike since February 14, this year, to press home their demands for revitalization fund, salary augmentation, amidst others. However, the FG has not been able to meet any of their demands fully.

The government through its counsel, James Igwe asked the court for an interlocutory injunction restraining ASUU from taking further steps as regards the strike, pending the determination of the substantive suit.

Nonetheless, there is still an argument whether ASUU will call off the over 7-month-old strike, since the body is hellbent to achieve its aim. Many observers have asserted that ASUU will soon file a suit in a higher court to counter the judgement of the industrial court. Some have also said that the ASUU is notorious for flaunting court orders.

Candidates who have been offered admission can accept or reject it. Accepting it means that you want to study in the school, while rejecting it means that you don’t want to study in the school.

The candidates who do not see their names in the provisional admission list should not be worried. They should all be checking their caps regularly.

May God help we the Southerners in our betraying attributes.
Education shall be great again in Nigeria even more than that of South Africa and Botswana by God's grace. Not the mushroom university education that we having presently. You're complaining of unemployment, which company would employ quack and half bake graduate when they can access grounded South African or Botswanan graduates to work in their companies at Europe, Australia , New Zealand and across all the regions of the world.
Poor educational quality with zero international competitiveness must stop in Nigeria for the sake of our unborn generation.
The ruling class put their children in best universities across the globe, yet Nigerian fail to hold them for account on, why can't the children of president, governors, senator school in Nigeria? But rather they are contend with over growing unemployment rate of halfbake graduate without value addition.

EducationIMSU Pulls Out Of The ASUU Strike by Emeritus1200(op): 6:11am On Sep 20, 2022
The management of Imo State University (IMSU) disclosed that the university has pulled out of the over seven-month industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU).

It was announced that academic activities will resume fully in the school and all the students should make themselves available as soon as possible. The announcement was made known through the school’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Ralph Njoku to the press.

According to the PRO, the school management deemed it fit to resume academic activities so that it will not be at risk of losing students, especially fresh students and aspirants. Nonetheless, he stated that the university has no problem with the ASUU. He then said that the decision taken was meant to prevent academic disruption and nemesis for the students and the generations of students to be admitted.

“The management has decided to open the university for academic activities. We don’t have any issue with ASSU we just open the school for academic activities. Lecturers who are willing will now come to start lecturing.

“We decided that we don’t want to shortchange our next generation. Just like the 2022 applicants, we have not even matriculated them and we are coming up with 2022/2023 if we keep delaying we will lose so many people who are desirous of University education. So, we felt it is time to hold the bull by the horn.

The ASUU has been on strike since February 14 this year to press home their demands about the increment of salary, revitalization funds, among others. However, the federal government has failed to meet none of their demands fully. All consultations and negotiations have failed. Hence, the federal government has sued the ASUU to the industrial court in order to compel the ASUU to resume academic activities in the country’s universities.

Anambra Bans Wearing Of Miniskirts Among Female Students

Anambra has banned the wearing of miniskirts as school uniform among female students in the state. The ban was made known by the Commissioner For Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh in Awka on Sunday. The announcement of the ban became effective as the new academic session starts on Monday, 19th September, 2022.

She noted that the announcement has been made known to all stakeholders in the education sector in the state, including both public and private education secretaries.

However, the commissioner berates the frivolity behind the wearing of miniskirts in the state, stating that it is morally wrong and unacceptable according to the societal standard. She opined that morals should be communicated into the lives of the students.

“A student should look smart, well groomed, project positive vibes and not be indecently dressed for school.

“The acceptable length for uniforms in the state remains knee length and not above the knee, which is fast becoming the fashion trend in schools,’’ she noted.

The trend of putting on miniskirts is rampant among secondary school girls nowadays. Therefore, many see the latest ban of the wearing of miniskirts by the Anambra State government as a timely help for the much indecent dressings by the students and a discipline for the morally ill ones. However, some people have raked the government over the coal for taking a piece of parental responsibility which is not part of the function of a government.

EducationThe Difference Between "Let Us Eat, Children And Let Us Eat Children" by Emeritus1200(op): 10:07am On Sep 19, 2022
PUNCTUATION MARKS

Let us eat children.

Let us eat, children.

The two sentences have the same words, but their meanings are different. The meanings of the two sentences are differentiated by one of the punctuation marks called comma. The first sentence means that they want to eat the children, while the second sentence means that the children are called to eat food. It is noteworthy that the speaker or writer may not intend to eat the children, but his/her poor knowledge on punctuation marks makes him/her construct such an implicating expression. However, knowledge on punctuation marks will evade such errors.

Punctuation marks are symbols that are used in writing for clarity. They are the signs which enable write ups to be well understood. They give meaning, intensity, precision and clarity to sentences.
