TravelSaudi Arabia To Let Women Enter Sports Stadiums In 2018 by emma321(op): 9:19am On Oct 30, 2017
Saudi Arabia will for the first time allow women to attend sports events in three selected stadiums from early next year, the General Sports Authority said in a statement.

The stadiums in Jeddah, Dammam and Riyadh are being prepared to accommodate families in early 2018, said the statement, carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency late on Sunday.

Last month Saudi Arabia announced that, from June, women would be allowed to drive cars, ending the world's only ban on female driving.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 reform program aims to open up Saudis’ cloistered lifestyles, shaped in part by a strict, conservative version of Sunni Islam that limits the role of women, and diversify the economy away from oil.

CultureCelebrating Alaafin At 79 by emma321(op): 7:21am On Oct 26, 2017
The Alaafin of Oyo, is 79. He has spent 46 years on the throne.

Since his enthronement, Oyo has improved tremendously. It has become a Mecca for foreigners who are conducting studies on African culture. This has elevated Nigeria above some other nations around the world.

I admonish all Oyo indigenes in the diaspora to come home and establish industries, just like the late Alhaji Adekunle Haruna and Prince Jibola Afonja did. Once again, I wish his majesty long life and prosperity.

PoliticsSalami Rejects Appointment To Monitor Graft Cases by emma321(op): 7:14am On Oct 26, 2017
The search for an head for the National Judicial Council (NJC) committee to monitor graft cases continues as Justice Isa Ayo Salami turns down the offer, exclusively reports Yusuf Alli.

Former President of the Court of Appeal (PCA) Justice Ayo Salami (retd) has rejected his appointment as the Chairman of the Corruption and Financial Crime Cases Trial Monitoring Committee (COTRIMCO) based on principle and conscience.

He is believed to have been convinced that the committee may not work as “efficiently expected” because of the businesses of some members.

Justice Salami was named the chair of COTRIMCO, which was set up by the National Judicial Council (NJC,) on September 27 by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

The appointment was based on the decision of the NJC at its 82nd meeting in Abuja.

Justice Salami is said to be uncomfortable with the composition of the 15-man committee.

The panel is said to include some members who had been implicated in some conflicting challenges between the bench and the bar.

Although, Salami was out of the country when he was appointed, he sought audience with the CJN upon his return.

It was learnt that after discussing his reservations with the CJN, he wrote to reject the appointment.

A Supreme Court sources confirmed that Justice Salami had “thrown in the towel”.

The source, who spoke in confidence, said the CJN might have to brief members of the NJC to search for another credible chairman.

Justice Salami is said to have consulted widely with leaders on the Bench and in the Bar before resolving with his family to reject the offer.

A source said: “I think Salami felt that a few members of the committee had been entrenched in the intrigues in the nation’s Judiciary.

“He believes that as the chairman of the committee, he will not have the authority to keep those members in check.

“So, instead of creating unnecessary problem for himself without any place to run to, he opted to stay away from the committee.

“In fact, while he was still being asked by colleagues to give the appointment a chance, there was controversy over the reinstatement of a former chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms Task Team, Mr. Abdulrasheed Abdullahi Maina. Salami just said he won’t accept this offer.

“He, however, took time to meet with the CJN personally to thank him for the honour and why he cannot accept the job. He made it known that he had no grudges against the CJN.”

But another source said: “None of the 15 members of the committee has been indicted in any way. The CJN was meticulous in composing the committee. Even where there were imputations, some members of the committee came out clearly to clarify a few things.

“Being a committee of the NJC, there is no way the CJN will allow any member of the committee to either undermine Justice Salami or the mandate of the panel.

“If His Lordship, Justice Salami, has chosen to reject the appointment, the CJN will certainly look for a meritorious legal giant like him.”

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) on October 3 wrote the CJN seeking the removal of members of the bar from the panel.

In the letter signed by SERAP Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, the organisation said the composition of the committee was not in consonance with the advisory of the UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers.

The letter said: “SERAP urges your Lordship to urgently revisit, review, and reconsider the membership of the Salami committee to ensure that members currently handling high-profile corruption cases involving PEPs are removed.

“This proposal aims solely to remove the risk of apparent and potential conflicts between the work of the committee and the private practice of some of its members who are handling high-profile cases of corruption involving PEPs and to ensure the independence, impartiality, integrity and accountability of the judiciary.

“SERAP believes that judicial accountability should be secured in a way that is harmonious with, and not damaging to, the essential character and functions of the judicial office. A system of fair, effective and trustworthy judicial performance evaluation promotes public confidence in the judiciary, which, in turn, is essential to judicial independence.

“SERAP also urges your Lordship to ensure that the Salami committee can manage its own budget and has enough human and financial resources to properly function with independence. The Salami committee should also be accountable for its activities, to avoid the possible public perception of bias and conflict of interest.”

Besides Justice Salami, other members of the committee are: the Chief Judge, Borno State, Justice Kashim Zannah; the Chief Judge of Imo State, Justice P.O. Nnadi; Chief Judge Delta State, Justice Marsahal Umukoro, Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice M. L. Abimbola. Others are the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. A.B Mahmoud(SAN); former NBA Presidents, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN); Mr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN); Mr. J.B Daudu (SAN); and Mr. Augustine Alegeh (SAN); Dr. Garba Tetengi (SAN); Mrs. R.I Inga, Representative of Non-Governmental Organisations, Representative from the Ministry of Justice, Representative from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, ICAN, as well as the Secretary of the NJC, Mr. Gambo Saleh.

The Committee’s primary functions are:

regular monitoring and evaluation of proceedings at designated courts for financial and economic crimes nationwide;
advising the Chief Justice of Nigeria on how to eliminate delay in the trial of alleged corruption cases;
giving feedback to the Council on progress of cases in the designated courts, conduct background checks on judges selected for the designated courts; and
evaluating the performance of the designated courts.

PoliticsJudge Orders Jonathan To Appear As A Witness In Metuh’s Corruption Trial by emma321(op): 7:04am On Oct 25, 2017
ABUJA—Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja, insisted, yesterday, that former President Goodluck Jonathan must appear before him today, saying his summon was in line with a ruling of the Court of Appeal in Abuja that faulted his earlier refusal to grant Metuh’s request for subpoena to be issued against Dasuki.

This came as detained former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd), yesterday, gave reasons he would not testify in the ongoing trial of erstwhile National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh.

Metuh had asked the court on Monday to summon the former President as a witness to testify in the case filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over alleged N400 million fraud.

Justice Abang said: “Indeed, at the close of business, yesterday (Monday) being October 23, 2017, precisely at about 3.59 pm, the registrar forwarded to the court in chamber a subpoena to compel former President Goodluck Jonathan to appear in court to testify at the instance of the first defendant (Metuh).

“Therefore, in line with section 241(1) of Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 and having regard to the subsisting judgment of the Court of Appeal in the appeal CA/A/159C/2017, between Olisa Metuh and Federal Republic of Nigeria dated September 29, 2017 to the effect that it will be tantamount to violating the right of the first defendant to fair hearing not to sign the subpoena.

“I have no option other than to sign a subpoena to compel former President Goodluck Jonathan to appear in court on September 25, 2017 (Wednesday) to give evidence at the instance of the first defendant.”

A registrar of the court, however, confirmed to the judge, yesterday, that the court’s bailiff could not serve the subpoena on Jonathan.

Metuh had in his application, requested that the summon be served on Jonathan in his Abuja home.

Breaking! Charley boy leads okada riders to declare full support for Obiano.

The love is all over… Keke and Okada riders today endorsed the re-election bid of His. Excellency. Chief Willie Obiano for a second term in office.

This might not be unconnected to the security enjoyed by ndi Anambra. Before now, petty thieves do snatch motorbikes and keke from their owners and drivers, until Gov. Willie came and chased them out of Anambra state.

Also, while other States increased tariffs to adapt to the economic recession, Gov Obiano reduced the levies being paid by the Okada and Keke Operators.

SportsEverton Want Carlo Ancelotti To Replace Ronald Koeman by emma321(op): 5:06am On Oct 24, 2017
EVERTON want Carlo Ancelotti to come back to the Premier League and be their new boss.

And in a shock twist Ancelotti is keen to have his old sidekick Paul Clement - manager of Swansea City - as his right hand man.

Everton want Carlo Ancelotti - but the Italian wants trusted former assistant Paul Clement to join him

Ancelotti and Clement won the Champions League at Real Madrid
The Italian coach is seen as the man to replace Ronald Koeman, who was sacked after a 5-2 thrashing at Arsenal, with his ability and personality ideal to turn round the Toffees who are stuck in the bottom three.

Ancelotti's name was the one being discussed by Everton's heirarchy BEFORE Koeman was officially sacked less than 24 hours after a horrible home defeat by Arsenal.

Everton owner Farhan Moshiri is still ambitious and Ancelotti has the kind of name and background that he fancies.

He has been in charge at AC Milan, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain and was most recently at Bayern Munich until he was axed.

SportsArsenal Shareholders To Tell Board To Resolve Arsene Wenger's Future by emma321(op): 4:53am On Oct 24, 2017
Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal board will be asked at Thursday’s annual general meeting to make a final decision on the club’s managerial future well before the end of next season so as to avoid a repeat of this year’s uncertainty.

Wenger did eventually agree a new two-year deal until May 2019 but, for the second contract in succession, final confirmation did not come until the previous season had ended. The 68-year-old has since acknowledged himself that the team were affected amid a collapse in form between January and March that effectively cost the club a place in the Champions League. Arsenal did also rally to win a record-breaking 13th FA Cup – and seventh under Wenger – but shareholders will make it clear that a repeat of this uncertainty should be avoided next season.

TravelNigerian Union In South Africa Cautions Over Spread Of False Information by emma321(op): 5:00pm On Oct 14, 2017
The leadership of Nigerian Communities in South Africa has urged Nigerians living in the country to stop spreading false information capable of hurting relations between Nigeria and South Africa.

The President, Nigeria Union, South Africa, Adetola Olubajo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the telephone from Pretoria, South Africa on Saturday that some information used in the social media were false.

“The union investigated some information posted by some Nigerians in the social media and found them to be false.

“We caution Nigerians not to spread any kind of information which may turn out to be false. We urge them to wait for confirmation before using such news.

“It may affect relations between Nigeria and South Africa,” he said.

Mr Olubajo said that the South African police was cooperating with the union on the recent killing of Nigerians in that country.

“If our people send false information, it can jeopardise the on-going investigation by the police and collaboration between the union and authorities to ensure that justice is done in the case,” he said.

The President also advised Nigerians to avoid hate speech because the union was on top of the situation.

“The union investigates any information before sending out to Nigerians. We expect our people to be very cautious in this regard by ensuring that false information is not spread.

“We have branches in the nine provinces of South Africa and on the ground,” Adetola said.

TravelWorld’s “most Useless Airport” Opened(photos) by emma321(op):
St Helena international airport dubbed the “most useless airport” in the world by the British media is to receive its first commercial airline flight today.

The remote British island of St Helena is a volcanic tropical island in the South Atlantic Ocean, 4,000 kilometres (2,500 mi) east of Rio de Janeiro and 1,950 kilometres (1,210 mi) west of the Cunene River, which marks the border between Namibia and Angola in southwestern Africa.

A plane from South Africa is expected to touch down in the new airport, ending the island’s reliance on a ship once every three weeks.

It is hoped the service, funded by the UK, will boost tourism and help make St Helena more self-sufficient.

Built with £285m ($380m) of funding from the UK Department for International Development (Dfid), it should have opened last year but dangerous wind conditions delayed the launch.

After further trials this summer the weekly service between Johannesburg and St Helena was passed as safe.

Up until now, the British territory has been one of the world’s most inaccessible locations, only served by the ship from South Africa.

It is chiefly known as the island where French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled and died after his defeat in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

An Embraer E190-100IGW aircraft operated by SA Airlink is due to land at 13:15 GMT on Saturday, carrying 78 passengers.

The flight is scheduled to take six hours and 15 minutes including a stop in the Namibian capital, Windhoek.

Ohonbamu, said the commissioner for budget and planning had presented a memo requesting for the approval of the draft 2017 budget estimate because of the sub-optimal performance in the national macroeconomic environment.

PoliticsBREAKING: Kachikwu VS Baru: VP Osinbajo Admits He Approved Contracts by emma321(op): 1:21pm On Oct 12, 2017
The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has admitted to approving contracts for the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), a situation that has been generating all forms of controversies between the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu and the NNPC Group Managing Director (GMD), Maikanti Baru.

The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, in a series of tweets on his twitter handle @akandeoj, on Thursday, confirmed that the contracts were approved after due diligence by the Vice President when he acted as President, recently.

Akande said Osinbajo approved the recommendations for the contracts as part of necessary actions to deal with backlog of unpaid cash calls and incentivise investments.

He also said Osinbajo made the clarification in view of media enquiries that followed NNPC’s claim that the contracts were indeed approved by Osinbajo.

The tweets stated, “In response to media inquiries on NNPC joint venture financing, VP Osinbajo, as Ag President approved recommendations after due diligence & adherence to established procedure. Action necessary to deal with huge backlog of unpaid cash calls which Buhari adm. inherited and also to incentivise much needed fresh investments in the oil & gas sector.”

Kachikwu’s letter to the President in which he alleged gross insubordination by the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation(NNPC) Maikanti Baru, was leaked to the media last week.

He had alleged that Baru awarded $25 billion contracts without following due process.

He had also alleged that the $25 billion contracts were struck without consulting the office of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources or the board of the corporation.
