Politics › [full Text] Jonathan’s Broadcast Message On The General Elections by Emmafe(op): 9:12am On Mar 27, 2015 |
Dear Compatriots,
1. As we prepare to go to the polls tomorrow, I have come before you this morning to express my immense appreciation for the opportunity you gave me to lead this great nation of ours in the past four years.
2. I also wish to place on record, once again, my sincere gratitude for the support you have given my administration without which the significant progress we have made in recent years would not have been possible.
3. In spite of the many challenges we have had to contend with since 1999, our present democratic dispensation continues to endure and grow stronger in keeping with the yearnings and aspirations of our people.
4. We have all worked very hard to nurture and strengthen our democratic institutions and promote the good governance practices which they were designed to deliver for the better well-being of our people.
5. I believe I can say without fear of contradiction that we all clearly cherish the democracy we now have and will never willingly give it up for any other form of governance.
6. This much-cherished democracy of ours is about to be put to the test once again.
7. I urge you all to troop out en-masse to peacefully perform your civic duty of voting for leaders of your choice tomorrow.
8. As we do so, let us all – political party leaders, contestants, party members, party agents, supporters and ordinary voters alike, be very conscious of the fact that the eyes of the entire world are on us.
9. We must therefore comport ourselves in a manner that will further strengthen our democracy and consolidate our place in the comity of truly democratic nations.
10. I made a commitment on assumption of office to progressively deliver freer, fairer and more credible elections in our country. In keeping with that commitment, the Federal Government has given the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) all necessary support to ensure that it conducts very successful elections tomorrow and on April 11.
11. We have all been assured that INEC is fully ready for the elections. I believe that we can all trust that they are certainly more ready now than they may have been before security issues and other concerns necessitated a re-scheduling of the dates for the 2015 general elections.
12. As an administration, we welcome the fact that millions of Nigerians who were yet to receive their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) as at February 14, and would therefore have been unfairly disenfranchised if the polls had gone ahead on that date, have seized the opportunity of the re-scheduling to collect their cards and can now exercise their right to vote tomorrow.
13. We are also glad that our gallant Armed Forces have successfully stemmed the seizure of Nigerian territories in the North-East by the terrorist group, Boko Haram.
14. They have recaptured most of the communities and territories formerly occupied by the insurgents, making it possible for thousands of internally-displaced Nigerians to begin returning to their homes and communities.
15. I heartily commend the very courageous men and women of our Armed Forces for the immense sacrifices which they continue to make in defending the nation and protecting its citizens.
16. I also thank all Nigerians for keeping faith with us over the past six weeks.
17. I call on all political parties and politicians in the country to allow the free, unfettered will of our people to be expressed without any hindrance in the coming elections in keeping with the hallowed principles and tenets of democratic governance which we all profess.
18. The will of the people freely expressed through the ballot is the bedrock of all democracies and ours cannot be an exception.
19. Let us all therefore be prepared, as true democrats, to graciously accept the outcome of the elections as the rightful choice of our people from whom all political powers in our democracy must emanate.
20. My administration has done its utmost best in the past four years to deliver on our promise to positively transform our country.
21. Tomorrow’s election is another very important milestone as we continue our march towards the fulfillment of our God-given potential for greatness.
22. The election offers us another opportunity to empower leaders of our choice once again, and to show the world that genuine democracy is alive and well in our beloved nation.
23. I will like to restate my belief that no political ambition can justify violence or the shedding of the blood of our people.
24. I reaffirm once again, my personal preparedness to ensure fair play during the elections and to deploy the resources and institutions of state only in the manner prescribed by our laws.
25. Let me warn, however, that as President, Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, I am under oath to protect the lives of all Nigerians and the security of our country at all times. I will never abdicate my responsibilities in that regard.
26. Democracy allows dissent. It encourages differences and even fervent disagreements. But elections must never be mistaken for war or an opportunity to set fellow citizens against each other and tear our beloved nation apart.
27. Those who may harbor any intentions of testing our will by unleashing violence during the elections in order to advance their political ambitions should think again as all necessary measures have been put in place to ensure that any persons who breach the peace or cause public disorder during or after the elections are speedily apprehended and summarily dealt with according to our laws.
28. The nation’s security agencies are also fully prepared and ready to deal decisively with any group or persons who attempt to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the elections or cause any form of public disorder.
29. Our dear country, Nigeria is the largest democracy amongst black nations of the world. We are a nation of great accomplishments, with a proud history of evolving affinities.
30. Let us go out tomorrow to vote peacefully and set a fitting example of political maturity for other emerging democracies to follow.
31. I wish you all and our dear nation, very peaceful and successful elections.
32. May God Almighty continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
33. I thank you all.

Education › Post UTME Would Soon Be Scrapped- JAMB Registrar by Emmafe(op): 3:23pm On Mar 22, 2015 |
http://www.oaucampus.com/forum/showtopic.php?id=1969
The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of JAMB, Professor ‘Dibu Ojerinde, on Saturday said that the Post-UTME would soon be scrapped.
Ojerinde said, “with time, post UTME will be a thing of the past. It (post UTME) is there because people doubt the scores. But there is no need to doubt the scores now because we know it is genuine. From last year’s exercise, 617, 000 candidates took the CBT and there was no single exam malpractice, a lot of them are in the university now and they even performed better than the paper pencil people. I know at the end of the day, it will be minimum examination malpractice and that may come as a result of lateness, which is regarded as malpractice because if you come late, we cancel your result. We will not allow you to do the exams and if you do the exams, we will cancel it.
Parents to teach their child the ways of the Lord and when he grows, he will not depart from it. Teach them how to be punctual, teach them how to take their studies seriously, teach them how to obey laws and order and they will key into it for the rest of their lives. That is the beginning of the discipline that we’re talking about.
Punctuality is a path of discipline that we want to impose on the lives of our children”. Ojerinde also says that Computer-Based Test has reduce examination malpractice and other forms of irregularities.
“The introduction of the Computer-Based Test has reduced the level of leakages of exam papers. Anybody who goes out and says these are the questions they will ask me and that person believes that he is going in to meet the same kind of questions in the exam hall will be disappointed.
He is not going to meet the same questions, so it is zero per cent leakage. I can prove that to you that examination malpractice has been completely reduced.
As the candidates sit by their systems, you can see them and their pictures on their screens. If a male is sitting down and you see a female picture, wouldn’t you know he’s not the right candidate? The system of biometrics will even expose them.
The process of examination attendance list will expose them, so most of these problems that we encountered are gone.” |

Nairaland General › Oau Students Play Jonathan And Buhari At Debate by Emmafe(op): 10:50am On Mar 16, 2015 |
http://www.oaucampus.com/forum/oau-students-play-jonathan-and-buhari-at-debate_1940.html
“We have several challenges facing the nation and these are caused by years of PDP misrule. We must vote in Gen. Buhari to move this country forward.” “We must never allow a dictator to steer the affairs of this nation in a democratic period.
He would infringe on the fundamental rights of the people and prosecute people he perceives as personal enemies. President Jonathan is an unrepentant democrat and he is the best man to lead the country.”
Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State have held a mock presidential debate ahead of the March 28 election. The debaters, who stood on the platform of either the All Progressives Congress (APC) or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marshalled points on why their parties should win the election. The parking lot of the students’ Union Building was aglow for the event.
AFEES LASISI (300-Level Political Science) reports. Call it a mock presidential debate and you won’t be wrong. But the discussants had a common purpose – the progress of the country. They made their presentation without rancour. They explained how their adopted parties – All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – would achieve their goals – if elected.
These were no candidates contesting elections; they are students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State. Last Friday, they participated in a debate organised by the leadership of the Students’ Union Government (SUG). The car park of the Students’ Union Building (SUB) was filled by students who came to listen to the programmes of both parties. The debate, which was part of the union’s leadership conference, was put together by Akorede Awode, its Assistant General Secretary.
Akorede said the debate was to enlighten students on the party with the best programmes and candidate in the March 28 presidential election.
President Goodluck Jonathan is PDP’s candidate; Gen. Muhammadu Buhari is for APC. Both parties were represented by students at the debate.
PDP’s representatives were Goodluck Osaretin and Samuel Fakiyesi. Ismaheel Bayewunmi represented APC. The session was moderated by Olatayo Shittu, the General Secretary and Seun Fakorede, a student.
Samuel, one of the PDP discussants, argued that President Jonathan should be given another chance to bring his Transformation Agenda to fruition, noting that the president’s programmes had brought meaningful development in the last six years. He said another four years of Jonathan would be to the country’s good.
He said: “President Jonathan has allowed other arms of government to function freely without meddling in their affairs. The entrepreneurship programmes introduced by the president have created millions of jobs for youths. We have also enjoyed freedom of speech unlike what we used to have under the military.
“The signing of Freedom of Information (FoI) Bill into law has brought about free press and people can criticise the government without fear of arrest. The president has boosted education with the establishment of more federal universities across regions. The increase in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has made our economy to grow faster, thereby making the nation largest economy in Africa.”
But APC’s Ismaheel said there was a difference between economic growth and economic development. Economic growth, he said, is the number of sustained businesses and investment in the country. He defined economic development as the impact of the growth on the masses. He punctured PDP’s debaters’ claim of economic development, saying the condition of living of the masses has worsened.
Ismaheel challenged his opponents to explain why the value of naira is falling against the dollar if truly the economy is growing. He asked them to provide statistics of jobs created yearly by the Jonathan administration in the last five years. Insurgency in the Northeast, Ismaheel argued, attests to the failure of the PDP-led Federal Government. Courageous leadership, he added, is needed to combat the Boko Haram menace, saying Gen. Buhari remained the best man for the top job.
He said: “Under the PDP administration, the rate of corruption has increased and the nation has gone down further in corruption rating. To redeem the image of Nigeria in the comity of nations, we need an incorruptible and a tested leader, who will lead by example. It must be someone whose antecedent speaks volume in effective leadership and ability to fight corruption.
“All these attributes are found in Gen Buhari. I am convinced that he has what it takes to lead this nation and pave the way for real growth and development in all sectors. If our economy is stabilised, the widening gap between the dollar and naira would close and the economy would grow. APC would proffer solutions to the insecurity challenge claiming innocent lives daily.
Also, education is one of the priorities in the APC manifesto; we should expect re-structuring of the education system for better and quality education.”
In his counter-argument, the second PDP discussant, Goodluck, said corruption had been in the system before the incumbent came to power. He said the president had fought corruption than any of his predecessors, stressing that Jonathan would do more to stop graft if re-elected.
Goodluck said: “We must never allow a dictator to steer the affairs of this nation in a democratic period. He would infringe on the fundamental rights of the people and prosecute people he perceives as personal enemies. President Jonathan is an unrepentant democrat and he is the best man to lead the country.” In his closing remarks, Ismaheel said: “We have several challenges facing the nation and these are caused by years of PDP misrule. We must vote in Gen. Buhari to move this country forward.”
There were questions and contributions from members of the audience. Many were convinced beyond doubts who to vote in the presidential election.
A guest, Pastor Peter Alabi of Rhema Word Church, said the presidential election would re-define the country’s destiny, adding: “This is an election that has generated more than a passing interest on the people in the history of this country. No one knows who would win or lose.”
He advised the students not be induced by material property before voting for a party, urging them to vote according to their conscience. Olawale Kessington, a graduate of the university, said a leader who could not tackle the nation’s challenges has no right to be in office.
Akorede said the debate was to make students decide which party to vote for in the general elections. He promised to organise a post-election debate that would feature Edo State Chief of Staff Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon. |

Education › Pass Degree Is Now Irrelevant – NUC Scribe by Emmafe(op): 8:13pm On Mar 14, 2015 |
http://www.oaucampus.com/forum/pass-degree-is-now-irrelevant-nuc-scribe_1931.html
https://campusportalng.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Professor-Julius-Okojie-NUC.jpg
The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) , Prof. Julius Okojie, has disclosed that the “Pass Degree” had become irrelevant in the Nigerian Universities System (NUS).
He said this during the monthly press luncheon, held on Thursday, 5th March, 2015, at the Rockview Hotel, Abuja. Prof. Okojie stated that the decision to abolish the “Pass Degree”, which was not a Honours degree, was not a unilateral decision by the NUC, rather it was reached at a Stakeholders’ Consultative Workshop in 2003, which was convened to discuss the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) and implementation of the course credit system.
As a result of the consultation, the minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) was set as 1.5, consistent with the course credit system.
The NUC Scribe noted that the Consultative Workshop also reached a decision to abolish the semester system where a student who failed to meet up the CGPA requirement was given an opportunity to carry the courses he/she failed over to the next academic year, rather than reseat the examinations in same academic year.
He said that the new system placed the students on probation to serve as a warning and give them room to improve on their performances, adding that any student who still could not meet up was allowed to transfer to another department where he/she could perform better and graduate with better grades, rather than a pass.
The Executive Secretary said that the stakeholders’ decision was not a recent one, only that it had not been implemented by some universities. He said that in today’s competitive world, “a Pass Degree” would not get a graduate a job and it was to help these students that some universities had removed the “E” letter grade and stopped issuing “Pass Degrees” all in a bid to improve the level of Nigerian education and in turn make our graduates and certificates compete elsewhere in the world, the idea being that there was no point issuing a graduate an irrelevant certificate.
Okojie added that the decision was not retroactive and that those with a “Pass Degree” before now could continue with it in any area they wanted to venture into. |
Education › OAU Management Considers 2 Weeks Election Break, Exams To Start April 13 by Emmafe(op): 6:34pm On Mar 14, 2015 |

There are reports that the management of Obafemi Awolowo University is considering giving her students two weeks break to be able to exercise their franchise in the forthcoming general elections thereby extending the calendar of the session.
Various strong indications have continued to emerge from both the lecturers and students corners that the earlier scheduled 31st of March for the commencement of the Rain semester examinations for this session is most likely not to stand as the university management is considering an adjustment to the calendar because of the forthcoming general elections. From what can be possibly inferred from the expected adjusted calendar, the school will officially go on break in a fortnight and academic activities will resume on April 13, two days after the elections must have been over.
With this possible provision, a week out of the two weeks for the break will serve as the lecture-free week and examinations commence immediately on resumption. Reactions from most students' quarters about this development have shown acceptance as they believe the management now see reasons with them on the need to allow them participate in the forthcoming elections. In what seems to be an opposite reaction by Gbenga, a finalist in the Faculty of Education, he said he does not want any break until he writes his final paper. "We don't need any break, let me write my exams and leave this school." |

Delay, network mar the commencement of this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The 2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME which commence yesterday (Tuesday), nationwide, was again stalled across several examination centres over failure of internet server.
Tthe examination did not start at the official time of 8am, even as many candidates converged on the centres before the scheduled time.
No fewer than 1.4 million candidates are sitting for the examination, which commenced in more than 400 centres and in seven overseas countries. The examination is to last for 10 days.
In Jos, Plateau State, one of our correspondents gathered that JAMB officials had hectic time setting up the computers for the examination.
For instance, at the ICT Centre of the University of Jos, the examination did not start on time as the first batch of candidates began the test two hours later.
The delay affected the second batch of candidates, as they also did not start of their examination on time.
It was also gathered that some of the candidates did not know how to use the computers, a development that caused another round of delay.
One of the candidates, who craved anonymity, said, “Look it is past 11am and we are supposed to start by 8am.” He expressed frustration at what he described as a shoddy arrangement by officials of JAMB.
Another candidate, Elizabeth Pam, said the confusion started from the issuance of examination slips. She said, “They told us to come for the slips penultimate Monday but I didn’t get mine till Wednesday. Remember some students even protested that Wednesday because they couldn’t get their slips.”
Another candidate, who called himself, Indi, said, “We were admitted into the hall at 6am, but the exam did not start till sometime after 10am.”
Also gathered that the failure of the bio-data capturing machine to capture candidates’ thumb-prints during accreditation at the centres threw some centres into disarray. |
