http://www.oaucampus.com/forum/showtopic.php?id=1807 https://www.jamb.org.ng/images/banner.png Senior Administrative Officer, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Lagos, Hajia Amina Haruna, has dismissed allegations of deliberately marking down scripts of students.seeking admission into tertiary institutions in the country. She said JAMB does not.deliberately fail candidates that wrote the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) or withhold their marks to rob them of admission. Haruna gave the clarification at this year’s Students Academic Success Summit (SASS) organized by an education consultancy firm, Standard Mandate International (SMI). The event held at the Main Auditorium of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, had in.attendance over 500 students from 35 secondary schools in Lagos and Ogun states. The clarification came in the wake of students’ outcry over repeated low grades recorded in the UTME in recent time, such that candidates that scored less than 200 were considered for admission. Hajia Haruna explained to the students that the exam body chose the Computer Based Test (CBT) instead of the former pencil and paper mode to guarantee credible results. She maintained that the CBT has come to stay in the system, explaining that all candidates for this year’s UTME would write computer-based test. She said the CBT would help to maintain the credibility of the exam process and help reduce incidence of cancellation of results. She also explained the entry requirement to the university, pegging it at five o’ level credits in relevant subjects. She further said that the Computer Base Test (CBT) exam is bill to commence on 4th March. |

http://www.oaucampus.com/forum/oau-students-nysc-members-fight-over-inec-jobs_1798.html https://www.vanguardngr.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/election-violence.jpg It was almost a bloody affair at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, last Saturday, when some students of the institution and serving members of election-violence the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) fought over the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ad-hoc staff jobs. According to an executive member of the OAU Student Representative Council, Akhigbe Excel, trouble started when the students were barred from joining the corps members in the training, despite the fact that they were shortlisted for same. “INEC officials refused to allow OAU students to participate on the training after they were shortlisted for the ad-hock jobs. Even when the students asked they be allowed to join the youth corpers for the training, INEC officials insisted they were working with quota given to them. “The students insisted that until they are allowed the training would not hold and before we knew what was happening, mobile policemen were drafted to the scene to douse the tension.” “Trouble started when the students discovered that the corp members were writing their names to start the training. Though the policemen shot into the air but the students refused to be scared.” Akhigbe said the students were betrayed by INEC, especially having gone through a rigorous process to get shortlisted for the job which they are now being denied of. Explaining further, the student leader said “students from Nigerian tertiary institution were asked to register online, which OAU students did. Some of the students have spent a lot of money as they were asked to submit their original JAMB and had to travel to Osogbo to submit the other forms.” It took the intervention of the DPO and the Area Commander of lfe to calm the students down. |

https://punch.cdn.ng/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Soldiers-360x225.jpg The military has commenced an operation in Sambisa Forest in Borno State to flush out Boko Haram insurgents. The forest is widely believed to host some of the.training camps and facilities of Boko Haram in the North-East. It was learnt that the military high command decided to invade the vast forest in order to make the North-West safe for the general elections. A reliable source in the Army told one of our correspondents in Abuja that Air Force jets started the raid on Monday. He added that surveillance activities and raids were also ongoing as of the time he spoke on Wednesday. The source, who did not want his name in print.because he was not authorised to speak on the development, said that massive ground operation would follow the aerial operations. He said, “The military started an operation in the Sambisa Forest on Monday. For now, there are no specific cases of arrest; we don’t have that information now. The Air Force has been operating in the area since Monday. It is after that that the ground troops who are on red alert would be moved in.” Also, a source close to an office strategic to the operations said that a lot of activities were going on simultaneously in the forest and other parts of the North-East believed to host Boko Haram camps. He explained that the military was combing the forest because of intelligence reports that some of the insurgents who were dislodged from some communities in the North- East were moving back to the forest. The Director, Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris.Olukolade, could not be reached for comments on the raids as calls to his mobile did not connect. Meanwhile, 800 children from areas affected by insurgency in Adamawa State are currently undergoing psychotherapy in the state. Executive Chairman of the state Universal Basic Education, Bello Furo, who made this known explained that the psychotherapy was to minimise the trauma faced by the children whose parents were either gunned down or slaughtered by Boko Haram insurgents. He said, “The process will take some time because most of the parents were slaughtered before their children. “Right now, they do not have anybody to cater for them; they lost their parents as a result of the insurgency.” Also in the state on Wednesday, the wife of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Aisha Buhari donated drugs worth N135m to Internally Displaced Persons in Damare. Aisha, who said that it was unfortunate that the IDPs were refugees in their own country, showed sympathy and asked them to be steadfast in their prayers for peace to return to the country, especially the North-East. Meanwhile, Boko Haram fighters attacked Chadian army positions in Gamboru, Borno State on Wednesday but were beaten back. The Chadian troops are in Gamboru as part of a regional offensive against the islamist sect, which had staged several cross-border attacks over the past week. “We knew they were going to attack us. We were waiting. The battle didn’t last long. They fled,” a Chadian soldier said. He said that eight of his colleaques were wounded while three Boko Haram vehicles were destroyed and one seized. The Chadian Army later said in a statement that 13 Boko Haram fighters and a soldier lost their lives during the attack. Two female suicide bombers blew themselves up on Wednesday in Diffa, Niger Republic, a day after mortars and machine-gun shots were heard in N’Guigmi on the country’s border with Nigeria. The town lies near Lake Chad, around 100 kilometres east of Diffa. Source- http://www.punchng.com/news/soldiers-invade-sambisa-forest/ |
https://punch.cdn.ng/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Gen-Muhammadu-Buhari-retd-360x225.jpg The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has told Christian clerics that he will not Islamise the nation. According to a statement issued on Wednesday, Buhari said this during a meeting with Catholic bishops at the Pope John Paul Centre in Abuja. Buhari said he would always put Nigeria first if elected into office, adding that when he ruled Nigeria between December 1983 and August 1985, he did not impose Islam on any individual. He said having served in the military, he had been posted to several parts of the country and served alongside people of different religions and tribes. He said the Peoples Democratic Party had succeeded in misrepresenting him to the Christian community because they could not sell their candidate. He said, “I would like to solemnly declare that in spite of what our detractors say, I am not a religious fanatic of any sort and I have never been. In all my life, I have never supported extremism of any kind, and nowhere in my record of service to this nation can this false toga political opponents have tried so hard to put on me, be substantiated. Indeed, it is very unfortunate and I feel extremely sad that I have to give this type of assurance. “My background is in the army, and there is no doubt that the military is the most integrated pan-Nigerian institution. And even today, the military is one of the.institutions that represents the pride of our nation’s possibilities in unity. “Compatriots from every corner of this country come together, work and live together, entrust their lives to each other and integrate their families. It is a military where many of my dearest friends from all faith and.parts of the country, lost their lives defending the unity of our nation. That was the military I served in, and in that military it was impossible to be a bigot.” He said in governance, competence should always come before religion and that was why as head of state, he appointed 11 Christians as governors out of the 19 states. He said religion comes from personal conviction and should never be used to gain political advantage. He noted that his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, was not only a lawyer but a senior pastor. He said, “For me, the issue of religion is, and should always, be a matter of personal conviction. This personal conviction approach to religion has defined my work and interactions all my life, including my tenure in office as military Head of State. “The religion of all those I worked with was never a factor in their progress or in what happened to them. All that mattered then, and should still matter today, are competence, integrity and readiness to be fair to all. “I was recently informed that we had a balanced cabinet with key positions such as Finance, Energy and Defence occupied by Christians. In addition, 11 of.the 19 governors I appointed were Christians. My most memorable recollections of subordinate service was under Christian bosses, the finest our country had then, and among the most respected today. Indeed one of the best appraisals I received in the course of my military career was from General T.Y Danjuma" Source- http://www.punchng.com/news/i-wont-islamise-nigeria-buhari-tells-christian-leaders/ |
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, on tuesday, Importune Nigerians to counter the plan by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party to send the Independent National Electoral.Commission (INEC), Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, on terminal leave. ASUU in a resolution reached at the end of a National Symposium on the 2015 elections and signed by Chairman of the union at the University of Ibadan chapter, Prof. Segun Ajiboye, asked Nigerians to rise and say no to the grand plan of the Peoples Democratic Party to rig the 2015 general election. ASUU warned the cabals to tread with caution as the Nigerians are too sensitive to be forced to succumb to tyrannical ploy. “Having succeeded in using military chiefs to influence the shifting of the polls, the next plan on their agenda is to ask Prof. Attahiru Jega to proceed on terminal leave, while they bring a willing tool who will do their bidding to rig the.elections in their favour,” the union said. While urging Nigerians to stand up and resist elements of retrogression, ASUU noted that.anyone who emerges from a credible, free and fair election must be ready to implement fully.the 2009 agreement reached with the union. ASUU which lamented the haphazard implementation of the agreement, said a purpose and focused attention on education will engender development in Nigeria. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied reports that its chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, will proceed on terminal leave on March 1, 2015. National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the Nov/Dec 2014 SSCE results with remarkable departure from the past results recorded in the past years. Registrar/ Chief Executive of the Council, Professor Promise Okpala who announced the result in Minna yesterday said 52.94% of the candidates had Credit in English and 55.37% in Mathematics which is a tremendous improvement from the past years. The Registrar said, out of 63,445 that registered for the examinations, 61,386 eventually sat for the examinations with 30.57% recording Credits and above. A breakdown of results recorded in the core subjects shows that out of 53, 848 who sat for Biology 26,947 obtained pass with Credit which represents 50.04%. Also, out of 28,250 Candidates who sat for Chemistry,14,858 passed with Credit representing 51.62%, while 28,222 sat for Physics with 57 pass at Credit level which represents 0.20%. Similarly, 1,753 sat for Further Mathematics while 395 passed at Credit level representing22.53%, Agricultural Science had 41,080 Candidates and had 12,006 pass at Credit level representing 29,22%. Professor Okpala however decried the continuous involvement of Candidates in Examination malpractices despite the stringent measures taken to stop the ugly trend pointing out that 620 cases of malpractices were recorded which is still an increase in the ugly incidence. “It is important to note that there have been improvements in NECO SSCE results over the past four years. A comparative analysis of the results in English language and Mathematics examinations and those who had five Credits and above including English language and Mathematics from 2011 to 2014 depicts this trend.” Source- http://www.news247.com.ng/news/neco-releases-novdec-2014-ssce-result |
The home branch of the Great Ife Alumni Association of Obafemi Awolowo University on Wednesday held a symposium titled ‘STUDENT UNIONISM AND EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA’. The Chairman of the Home Branch Association, Prof. Akinloye Farinde explained that the need for the theme came up as a result of the conviction that the students must be involved in the affairs and administration of educational system and because it is believed that this is the only platform on which the students can be integrated into the system. The symposium had different discussants like the Dean, Division of Students Affairs, Dr Lateefah Durosinmi, the Director, CDL OAU, Prof. Bode Asubiojo, SSANU OAU Chairman, Comrade Demola Oketunde, Representative of ASUU OAU, Dr Ibiyemi, Representative of NAAT OAU, Mr T.A Adesiyan, President, Students Union OAU, Ibikunle Isaac M. and Former President OAU cum activist, Adeola Soetan make submissions on the topic of discourse. Dr (Mrs) Durosinmi explained that there must be cooperation between the management and the Students’ Union to ensure peaceful coexistence on campus. She posited that the main problem facing the development of tertiary institutions is the fact that Student Unionism has lost its intellectual nerve thus submitted to raw physical energy. She explained further that there can be no meaningful educational development until the Students’ Leaders start seeing the School’s Management as partners in progress and not the enemies they have termed them to be. Some of the speakers were of the opinion that Student Unionism needs surgical operations so that they can stop fighting for selfish interests and also contribute to National development as Unionism exists both for solving internal and National problems that may arise. An advice was given to Students Leaders to avoid violence in their articulation of problems and that they should foster a good relationship between themselves and Sister Unions like ASUU, SSANU, NASU and such other bodies as this would greatly help in lending credence to whatever the Students are clamoring for. In his submission, the President, SU, OAU explained that the Students Union can never help in fostering peaceful coexistence if students are not part of the decision making body of the school. He explained further that the course of things would not change if the management continues to be autocratic and if they still have the rights to instill measures they feel are good for maintaining law and order. He ended his part on a note of appeal to the Sister Unions to help in clamoring for the reinstatement of the suspended OAU6. The President, Students Union, OAU during the 1990/1991 Administration, Comrade Adeola Soetan explained no Student Leader can be successful without ideological colorations and that any Students’ Union must be theoretically grounded to understand the yearnings of the students. He ended with a position that radical unionism pays the University Management better as their positions will be made known through the students leaders without causing problems. The honourable Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau after his meeting with commissioners for education nationwide on Monday decided to dump the idea of giving students election break so as not to further disrupt academic calendar. The minister cited the impromptu Ebola break whose effect is still been felt in the sector. Students of Obafemi Awolowo University have however chided the minister and those who sat with him to take such decision as not weighing arguments properly before making their pronouncements. Even as the Students' Union leaders of Obafemi Awolowo University continue to dance to the gallery on their own opinion about the much talked about election break whenever they are asked, the Union President, Ibikunle Isaac Motunrayo confirmed to the media yesterday that students of OAU do not need to be given any election break.
