Students of Obafemi Awolowo University trooped out in their numbers to donate clothes and other items to children and disadvantaged people during the "Project Let Go" event that was held at Students' Union Building (SUB) car park of the varsity on Friday. Project Let Go which has been the major gist around the university campus for some days now was borne out of frown at the habit of wastage and as such the convener had encouraged youths to be benevolent by imbibing the habit of giving, empowering the society by uplifting the faces of the needy via material things like clothes, books, and even with knowledge and experiences among many other things. Not deterred by the hectic academic schedules, hundreds of Great Ife students were at the venue of the event lined up as they donated more than 700 items, majorly clothes. In less than an hour, the convener Janicuts; a trailblazing fashion brand gave out more than a hundred items including t-shirts,hats, books, and shoes to the donors. Apart from the refreshment packages given to various participants and donors at the event by Jo's Indulge, Vertile Couture also complemented Janicuts to give out female gowns to participants. The event which was anchored by Mc Sleekie and Ore Ajewole had interesting moments up as participants were given freebies including Data Bundles as they participate in event lightening contests. Present at the event were the Students' Union officers; SU Public Relations Officer, Bamidele Oludare who declared the event opened and SU Assistant Secretary General, Louis Awode among many other student leaders and celebrities. Speaking with our correspondent at the end of the event, the CEO of Janicuts and Project Let Go convener, Ajani Oluseyi feels good about the event and was glad it lived up to its expectation. "I feel good. The turn up by students is quite massive. In less than one hour, we have given out more than a hundred shirts and foods to the participants. Considering our frown at wastage and encouragement of people to give, I will say the event has surely lived up to its expectation" Source- www.oaucampus.com |
In its efforts to ensure free and fair elections and one that is violence free even after the exercise, the federal government will today decide whether schools, both private and public should be in session or go on break. This has come as a result of several outcries from students, parents and other stakeholders in the sector who have been calling on the federal government to see the need to shut down schools, at least for two weeks as recent developments within the country have clearly shown that schools are targets for the aggrieved. The minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau who disclosed this at the weekend during a dinner with media executives and the Education Correspondents of Nigeria (ECAN) said “As far as the federal government and the Ministry of Education are concerned, nobody has made a statement concerning the closure of schools.” “However, we are aware that there are agitations and conflicting views with some stating that schools should be closed and there will be no need to go to school. “To address this issue, the ministry has summoned all commissioners of education and other stakeholders for a meeting by Monday (today) 2pm so that the issue can be discussed. “It is not just a matter of the ministry sitting in the office and dishing out directives. There is a need to meet with stakeholders so that the benefits or otherwise of the closure of schools can be discussed but with the interest of the nation first.” Source: www.oaucampus.com http://leadership.ng/news/408567/elections-fg-decides-schools-closure-today |

This was at the Matriculation Ceremony which held at the Oduduwa Hall of the OAU Main Campus. The OAUCDL Online Distance Learning programme is accredited by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) and allows students to receive their lectures online using a customized study tablet (Vigitab). The Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Bamitale Omole, whilst addressing the students, said: “you have the singular honor of being the first set of students in our eLearning programme, the first of its type in Nigeria. I congratulate you on being pioneers of the e-Learning revolution in the country. I want to assure you that your distant learning mode of admission does not in any way imply inferiority in status, compared to our conventional students, either in terms of lecture delivery or the certificates you receive at the end of your programmes. Our university guards jealously the integrity of its degrees and diplomas whether obtained in the conventional or distance learning mode. Hence your various curricula have gone through the usual high standards of excellence of the University Senate for which Obafemi Awolowo University is well known.” The Center for Distance Learning Director, Professor Bode Asubiojo, speaking also at the ceremony said: “This development is the first of its kind in Nigeria and we are pleased with it. We have replicated the classroom experience on a tablet device for students. For the first time, students can receive lectures, submit assignments, participate in forums, take quizzes, and even rewind their lecturers, all from the comfort of their homes, offices or wherever they may be in Nigeria or abroad.” The eLearning solution is powered by a Learning Management System (VigiLearn) that allows students to receive lectures, submit assignments, relate with peers, participate in group discussions and get graded without being physically within the four walls of a lecture room. The Vigitab is specifically built for Nigeria and allow for users to continue to study and receive lectures with limited internet connection. “Our primary charge at the Center for Distance Learning of Obafemi Awolowo University is to provide quality education to the teeming number of Nigerian.youths who possess the prerequisite qualifications for entry to Nigerian Universities but are denied admission owing to inadequate facilities on campus and the working class who are desirous of pursuing undergraduate and post graduate programmes whilst still retaining their jobs; the Online Distance Learning programme allows us to deliver on this objective.” Professor Asubiojo highlighted. Courses on offer for the Online Distance Learning Programme are B.Sc. Accounting and Bachelor of Nursing Science. The Center plans to include more courses in the future. Source : www.oaucampus.com |
By this time in the next two years or so, you would have been rounding off your undergraduate programme. If you want to be sure you had prepared for life after campus, you’ve got to start these right from now! This is actually based on the notion that you’ve already taken a decision on what you want to be in future. As you get ready for that priced time regarded as ‘final year’, here are the top ten things you should consider doing ahead of then. Participate in Career Advancement Events: They are many around. From conferences to seminars, workshops to symposia and from competitions to contests, from grants to scholarships, the list is endless. It only takes discerning minds to identify one. In line with your future aspiration most especially, it is important you attend such career advancement events. Use career advancement websites or google, ask a professional in the field to keep a tab on upcoming career advancement events ahead. Earn the trust of others: Are you the cunning type? Do you possess some character that could portray you as a dishonest person? It’s high time you started getting rid of such characters. People around you are watching you. News of your good character or otherwise would spread to a place you never imagined in the nearest future. You’d better turn a new leaf today before it’s too late! Volunteer: Volunteering involves you providing services to people based on your skills or expertise at little or no cost at all. The world is in need of helpful people and such people should be sure that their effort is not in vain. It is important to note that volunteering could even increase your chances of getting a job. In an age when work experience is one of the pre-requisite to get a job, your volunteering experience would be helpful. For example, consider using your leadership and organisational skills, editing, writing, publicity, ICT, social media, medical and child caring skills. Give to the society voluntarily and you would succeed! Mop up your social media: Watch what you post on the social media. Your first job might be lost as a result of one status update in the same way another could get you a job right before you graduate. Remove that gangster picture of yours. Be equally careful of those who tag you in their status updates, especially if such wouldn’t present you in a good light. If it requires you ‘unfriending’ or ‘blocking’ such people, please do! Be as modest as possible in your posts. There is no crime talking about religion, politics, ethnicity, gender or other topics of diverse views. But if you must, you should thread the path with high level of intellectuality based on facts and avoid maligning other people indiscriminately. Study Smartly: Studentship isn’t all aboutworking hard to get the highest of grades but studying smartly. Smart studying emphasises you understanding the course content beyond examination situations. More often than not, most students read just to pass exams. Yours should be an exception! Irrespective of what the course is, it important you can apply its contents beyond examination situations. You don’t want to open your over five hundred page engineering textbook when asked to determine solution to a mechanical fault! Learn some skills: A skill-based personality is the ideal professionally-prepared personality. Go beyond the lectures to learn new skills applicable in the industry generally. It is possible that that step could place you above your peers in future. Skills learnt should be however relevant to contemporary times. Your skills are your selling points! Engage in fruitful journeys: Before you decide on embarking on any sojourn as a student, weigh the benefits. Ask yourself what you stand to lose by not participating as much as you consider what you stand to gain. You don’t want to found in the midst of street urchins nor would you want to be caught in the web of some controversy betraying your sparkling good character. Get yourself a mentor: Career mapping comes to play here. Your career should be plan-based. You would need a trustworthy professional in the field to be your mentor. He is more likely aware of current trends relating to achieving career success. He can easily help you in material and technical support where necessary. Your mentor should be your adviser in making professionally- inclined decisions. There is no need for an aspiring lawyer having a physician as his mentor. Choose your mentor wisely! Start practicing before graduating: Do you want to be a teacher? Start acting as one directly or indirectly. Clinch with a professional in your field of choice and request being his assistant/intern. Don’t expect to be paid since you are not yet a graduate. They could consider paying you if they have the resources to cater for that. You know what? Practice makes perfect! Be prayerful: God is the one who makes our plans materialise. Whatever we have in stock can only be successful combining dedication with prayer. There are stories of dedicated people who yet failed. That’s as a result of lack of God’s blessings in their acts. Think God first! People generally see tertiary institution life as being full of freedom. Yes, it is! Everybody is free to do whatever they wish. Why not do something personally worthy of reverence and reference against the future? Choose to do something beneficial for yourself. Your future starts now! Source: www.oaucampus.com |
Academic activities were halted at the faculty of agriculture on the 29th of January, due to a lecture boycott that was embarked on by the students of the faculty. Reasons for the boycott were stated as the bad state of; the lecture rooms (particularly the agricultural lecture thearters) at the faculty and the laboratories at the faculty. The boycott was the resolution of the congress that held on Tuesday the 27th when students of the faculty, presented the issue to be discussed. Necessary steps were then taken so as to ensure the effective and appropriate execution of the boycott. This they did by consulting and dropping letters with the Dean of the faculty, HODs, Dean Students Affairs (DSA) and ASUU representatives. The faculty management pointed out that there should have been a 72hour notice rather that than the 24hour notice they’ve gotten but the congress stakeholders presented their grounds for not rescinding by saying that they would hold a peaceful protest whilst the boycott was on. One of the stakeholders stated “the school’s astronomical increase of the school fee hasn’t translated to notable development of the faculty’s facilities, the faculty of Agriculture has been relegated whilst other faculties have seen the construction of new structures. Even if they don’t build us new structures, the old ones should be renovated”. We got verified information that as a result of emergency meetings that took place the evening of the 28th and 8am-9am, 29th between the stakeholders, the Chairman Security Committee, the Chief Security Officer ,the protest wasn’t embarked on but postponed for 72hours and the management promised to work on the students’ requests.
