Singer Davido and comedian Emmanuella have been nominated in the Favourite African Star category of the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Award.


Davido shared news of his nomination on his Twitter, writing:

“Just been nominated for the Nickelodeon Kids choice Awards category #FavAfricanStar !! Fans come alive!! VOTE NOW! @nickelodeon_africa”

Others on the list include South African sprinter Caster Semanya and rapper Cassper Nyovest.

There’s also Tanzanian singer Diamond Platnumz on the list, and Ugandan Eddy Kenzo.

Fans are allowed to vote for their winner on the Nickelodeon website.

A 500-level Computer Engineering Student of the University of Benin, identified only as Adam, on Thursday evening, hanged himself inside his room.

According to reports from his close friend, Adam attended classes as usual that very day, returned home, charged his phone, washed his clothes, then went inside his room where he hanged himself within 20 minutes of locking the door.

His lifeless body was only discovered when his sister, who came from Ekenwa campus, forced the door open. The deceased is said to be a sufferer of Bipolar disorder (once known as manic depression or manic-depressive disorder).

The reason behind this action could be as a result of so many things but as we heard, he’s a first-class student, so academic backwardness isn’t really the reason.

Senator Shehu Sani has made his thoughts about the ‘hate speech’ bill known to the public, the passage of the widely criticized Hate speech bill was sponsored by Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi of Niger State. According to Sani, should the hate speech law be passed, prisons across the country will be filled with bloggers and critics of the government.

Operatives from the Homicide Unit of the Edo State Police Command are battling hard to unravel how three boys who are first children of their respective parents died after attending a birthday party in Benin, Edo State.



The names of the dead cousins were given as Micheal Osula, Igie Edosomwan and Kelvin Idemudia. Already, there is confusion in the area over the mysterious and questionable manner of the deaths.



According to a report by NewTelegraph, the three brothers were said to have died on Sunday last week after the birthday ceremony held at Ogida quarters in Egor Local Government Area. Sources close to them said after they were confirmed dead moments they were rushed to a nearby hospital after complaining of not feeling well. Mother of one the deceased, Mrs. Comfort Edosomwan, had wailed profusely over the Sussen’s demise of her son.



Edosomwan, who disclosed that her son was about to eat in the house when unidentified friend of his called him to join him to the birthday party, alleged money ritual in the ugly and dramatic incident. She also appealed to the police to thoroughly investigate the matter, adding that one of the suspects arrested in connection to the deaths had recently returned from Ghana. The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, when contacted, said some suspects were being interrogated over the deaths.

CNN undercover reporter, Nima Elbagir has described the Nigerian government as no match to human trafficking cartel in the country, adding that a government which cannot curtail an organised human trafficking cartel could not fight an insurgent group like Boko Haram.

Elbagir made the remarks while giving a blow by blow accounts of her findings during her recent undercover expedition to Nigeria to unravel the scope and pattern of much talked-about illegal migration from Nigeria to Europe en route Libya.

The programme, which was anchored by Amanpour, highlighted the socio-economic nexus of illegal migration and laxity on the part of government of Nigeria to contain the ugly trend.

According to Elbagir, human trafficking in Nigeria is an organized cartel and well coordinated business which makes it practically difficult, if not impossible to be tackled by the Nigerian government.

She explained that her undercover discovery revealed that human trafficking is a multi-billion naira business in Nigeria, ran by powerful individuals with strong connections.

“Human trafficking is a big cartel in Nigeria, with returns of over 10 billion naira annually, it is a very organised and well coordinated cartel which made it difficult for Nigerian government to curb.

“It is revealing to know that use of rape by these smugglers is very rampant, and almost becoming a norm, it is really shocking and inhumane.

“We have reached out to Nigerian government on these findings and they agreed that the government is aware of this and working assiduously to put an end to it.

“One continue to wonder how a government that find it difficult to check human trafficking could curtail Boko Haram insurgency.

“Nigerian government must know that the major factor that make young people to be desperate of living the country for greener pasture is poverty and uncertain future, the government, in finding lasting solution to the problem must first and foremost tackle poverty and go after the trafficking cartel,” she said.

The anchor, Amanpour in her remarks, linked the scourge of human trafficking among young Nigerian youths to the general insecurity of girl-child in Nigeria, as she cited the abduction of over 200 girls from Government Girls’ Secondary School at Chibok, Borno state, and the recent kidnap of 110 school girls at a school in Dapchi, Yobe State.

Amanpour, in her remarks, however described Boko Haram as “Nigeria version of ISIS”.

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has temporarily relocated to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base at Maiduguri, from where the air search operations for the missing Dapchi girls are being coordinated. This is in order to have first hand information on the progress of the air search efforts and also give additional directives as might be necessary. The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mohammed Monguno was equally at the NAF Base Maiduguri, where he spoke to and encouraged the NAF personnel involved in the day and night air search operations. Furthermore, both the NSA and the CAS visited Damaturu, where they paid a courtesy call on His Excellency, Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe State, during which they held useful discussions regarding the missing girls. Later in the day, the NSA, accompanied by the CAS and other top military officers, travelled to Monguno to commission new projects at 171 NAF Detachment Monguno. The newly commissioned projects include the Unit’s Headquarters Complex, a block of 4 Single Officers’ Quarters, a block of 10 flats for airmen/airwomen and 2 helipads, all of which have just been constructed.

According to the Commander of the Air Task Force, Air Vice Marshal Idi Lubo, air power projection has limitations, one of which is reach. He therefore expressed his delight, noting that with the commissioning of the projects at 171 NAF Detachment Monguno, the NAF had just extended the reach of its helicopters. In his remarks at the commissioning ceremony, the CAS stated that the projects were undertaken in pursuit of the NAF’s commitment to ensuring security in the Northeast. He added that the NAF would continue to deploy air assets in all parts of the country towards ensuring that Nigerians are able to prosecute their businesses in a safe and secured environment. On the missing Dapchi girls, Air Marshal Abubakar declared that no efforts would be spared by the NAF in locating the girls, in conjunction with other security forces. He disclosed that NAF pilots on different NAF platforms were operating day and night to locate the girls, adding that he had decided to temporarily relocate to Maiduguri, given the import of the unfortunate incident.

While commissioning the projects, the Special Guest of Honour, Mohammed Monguno, lauded the monumental achievements of the NAF under its current leadership. He recalled that 171 NAF Detachment Monguno was only established in 2017; he was therefore surprised to see all that had been accomplished within the short period. He described the feats as a testimony to the zeal and commitment of the CAS to repositioning the NAF into a highly professional force in line with his clearly stated vision. The NSA also described the establishment of NAF presence in Monguno as being long overdue, as it would add the much needed value to the efforts of the other security agencies in ensuring peace in the Northeast. Speaking further, the NSA commended the NAF for its immense contributions to the overall efforts at degrading the capability of the Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) while urging NAF personnel to remain steadfast. He equally seized the opportunity to appreciate President Buhari for his support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria in ensuring the sustenance of operations.

Also commissioned yesterday, by the NSA, were a newly constructed Fire Fighting and an Aircraft Arming Bay at NAF Base Maiduguri. It is recalled that the Dapchi girls were declared missing on 19 February 2018 after reported attacks by BHTs following which the NAF immediately commenced an air search for them. The NAF has had to deploy additional air assets, including Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms, to the Northeast, on 25 February 208, in a renewed effort at locating the missing girls. The CAS was still in the Northeast as at the time of writing this report.

The national caucus of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) meets today at the presidential villa, Abuja ahead of tomorrow’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

Daily Trust learnt that today’s meeting would receive interim report from Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led committee on “consultation, reconciliation and confidence – building” that was recently constituted by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Besides, today’s meeting would also ratify a comprehensive programme with dates on Continuous Nationwide Membership Registration Exercise, Ward Congresses, Local Government Area Congresses, State Congresses and National Convention which was brought to the attention of the National Caucus at the October 31, 2017 meeting.

The APC secretariat had told the caucus last year that the tenure of all officers elected into the Ward, Local Government, State and National organs of the party would be expiring in the second quarter of 2018 in line with the provisions of Article 17 (1) of the party’s constitution.

In a memo, the party secretariat told the caucus that it had begun preparations for the conduct of Congresses and National Convention in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution.

The APC national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, had said on January 6 this year that the meetings of National Caucus and NEC would hold to endorse the timetable for congresses and national convention.

The APC national chairman added that the congresses and convention would hold between January and June this year.

The report of Governor Nasir El-Rufai Committee on True Federalism was also expected to be considered at today’s meeting.

For the second year running, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike was honoured as the Sun Newspaper Governor of the Year.

He emerged as the Sun Newspaper Governor of the Year 2017 on Saturday at an award ceremony held at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Presenting the Sun Newspaper Governor of the Year award to Governor Wike, Publisher of Sun Newspaper and Former Abia State Governor, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu said the Rivers State Governor deserves the award in view of his performance.

He said that Governor Wike made history by becoming the first governor to win the award back to back. He urged the Rivers State Governor to maintain the tempo of development in the state.

He said that the Sun Newspaper is a platform that represents all interest groups in Nigeria, noting that it basically works for the growth and development of the country.

Receiving the award, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike assured that his administration will continue to deliver quality projects and programmes for the benefit of the Rivers people.

He stated that he is determined to always make Rivers people happy by sustaining his performance.

The governor said: “We will continue to deliver quality projects and programmes for the good people of Rivers State . We will not lower our performance.

“All local government areas of Rivers State have been touched by the administration. It is either a school or hospital or road. Every Local Government Area has one project or the other”.

He said the only way that the state will continue to defeat the Federal Government and the security agencies is the sustenance of the delivery of projects.

The governor added that the only state that can never be defeated is Rivers State. He said that the APC Federal Government only agenda is to rig, pointing out that they will be resisted.

He said that Rivers State is developing very fast because all the people are working in unity.

After the award ceremony, a reception was held by Rivers people in honour of the Rivers State Governor.

Speaking at the reception, Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio said that Governor Wike will be re-elected on the basis of his outstanding performance and not on the basis of party consideration.

He said Former Governor Odili took Rivers State to Nigeria, while Governor Wike has taken the state to the world.

He said: “We came here to celebrate a son of the Niger Delta and a humanist who believes in development”.

National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus described the Rivers State Governor as a genuine development expert who has touched all areas in Rivers State.

He said one of the miracles of the Wike administration is the fact that road has reached Opobo and communities .

Chairman of House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education, Mr Zakari Mohammed said Governor Wike is a shinning star that delivers on critical areas that improve the living condition of the people.

Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Chibodum Nwuche said the award to the Rivers State Governor is for the entire people of the state.

He said that in all the decisions that leaders take, they must always factor in the interest of the people.

Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Ikuinyi Ibani and the Head of Service of Rivers State, Rufus Godwins praised the governor for providing the right leadership that has improved the fortunes of the state.

The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-corruption (PACAC), Itse Sagay, has revealed what government ought to do to stop herdsmen/farmers’ clash.

According to him, the Federal Government should first brand killer-herdsmen a terrorist group then increase its fire-power in Benue State as a way of stalling further attack on innocent citizens by armed herdsmen.

In an interview with Vanguard, Prof. Sagay said: “My take on the herdsmen-farmer clash is that the Federal Government should now increase its fire power in Benue state and other trouble spots, because these armed terrorists are people who have no fear of any form of government, government’s reaction or position; they have no respect for the sanctity of life. These are just animals, wild animals. They are not better than jackals and animals in the forest. They don’t have any human emotion at all.

“The only thing they fear is if you come with fire power, you kill a few of them and the rest will run away.

“I think, with the military being brought into it and their moving into those forests, we are going to see a very sharp drop in their criminal actions.

Housemates in the ongoing Big Brother Naija reality show, Nina and Miracle have engaged in sort of heated verbal exchange.

Nina, who was Miracle’s strategic partner, is accusing him of sharing their sexual encounter with the other housemates.

This angered Miracle who demanded what exactly he had done wrong. In response, Nina said, “I never know you talk too much. Why did you tell them that we had sex on camera.

“Our relationship has depreciated and you no longer care about me. I longer enjoy the relationship the way I used to.”

Miracle, however, showed no remorse as he gave reasons they were no longer as close as before. He even told Nina not to jump to the conclusion that she knew him, asking, “For how long did you know me? How can you even say you know me before?”

After fighting Baba Spirit a year ago, boxer, Michael Ayittey Okine, widely known as Ayittey Powers has once again failed to adhere to the rules of the boxing federation as he has replicated the act, this time around, on live TV.

In a video sighted by abrantepa.com, Ayittey Powers who appeared on ATV as a guest expressed dissatisfaction about having Baba Spirit as a co-guest.

“If I knew you were going to invite this boy here, I wouldn’t have come in the first place,” he said.

As Baba Spirit begun to retort, Ayittey Powers pounced on him and gave the comedian some wild punches.

“Ey, ey, I beg you. Help, help, help!” a very alarmed and frightened host of the show, Sokoohemaa screamed.

But for the swift intervention of some three men, the fight would have been an eyesore.


This is about the third time the two have engaged in a brawl.

The fight, according to sources, stems from long held feud between Powers and Baba Spirit. Baba Spirit has allegedly been throwing tantrums at the boxer amidst mockery after the latter lost to Bukom Banku.

Baba Spirit was reported to have said that as slim as he is, he could beat Ayittey Powers. He is also said to have stated that Ayittey is so weak that even his wife beats him.

Ayittey Powers’ last boxing bout was a sixth-round knockout defeat at the hand’s of Bukom Banku.

The Mother of late Ghanaian dance-hall artiste, Ebony Reigns has said her daughter has assured her she will return – Madam Beatrice Oppong says the late musician told her this when she visited her recently to console her.

In an interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, Madam Oppong revealed that the ‘Mame Hw3’ hit singer visited her in her dream and urged her to take heart and stop crying because she will be coming back to her.

She said the singer told her: “Maa m?san aba” to mean ‘Mum I shall return’.

Ebony, together with two others, died in a gory accident on the Sunyani-Accra Highway on the 8th of February when she was returning to Accra after visiting her mother.

Born Pricilla Opoku-Kwarteng, she would have turn 21 years on Friday, February 16, 2018. Even though she is gone, Beatrice Oppong wished her late daughter a happy birthday “wherever she may be” and said she really loves her.

She disclosed that she had visited the scene of the accident and expressed the pain she is currently experiencing.

When Madam Oppong was asked if she was not worried that her daughter had decided to travel late that day, the singer’s mum noted that she was concerned and several attempts to get Ebony to leave the following day proved futile.

The singer, she said, explained to her that she had to return to Accra to embark on her first international tour. Ebony left around 9 pm on Thursday, February 8 to go pick her things from the hotel, she added.

Madam Oppong said her daughter arrived the morning of that fateful day – February 8 – and decided to lodge at a hotel.

“I love you, I will miss you, mum. Sweet mum,” Madam Oppong revealed were Ebony’s last words to her before she left.

A one-week memorial service has been scheduled for Sunday, February 18, 2018, in Accra for the late singer.

Ondo state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has arrested a woman who claimed to be blind for her to get alms from members of the public.

According to OrangeFM, 30 year old Chinyere Onuara, who said she is a widow and mother of five, was arrested at the front of a commercial bank in Akure where she had been begging for alms for months.


She was apprehended alongside her 4 year old son, Chidibere, whose plight actually got the attention of the officials of the ministry and they made an attempt to rescue the woman and the son, unknown to them that she wasn’t blind.

During interrogation, Chinyere claimed to have left Ebonyi for Akure, few weeks ago, to assist one of her friend who is said to be blind, to collect alms, but everything didn’t go as planned when she got to Akure, in Ondo State.

She said the instead of using her as guide for her alms collection, her blind friend decided to go for another person and so she made the decision to disguise as a bling beggar to make ends meet. She eventually confessed that she makes at least N1,000 daily.

Chinyere expressed regret over her action and said it was to raise money to start a trade, upon the recent demise of her husband after he was allegedly poisoned. She appealed to the state government to empower her, rather than punish her. And he promised that she would never go back into such means of extorting money from the public anymore.

The Director of Social Welfare in the Ministry, Sola Aladesuyi, revealed that the ministry will contact her Ebonyi counterpart to verify Chinyere’s claims to be sure she is not a security risk to the state, before she is sent back.

She is currently being detained at the State Ministry of Woman Affairs.
