Crime / Two Kids Burnt To Death In Mysterious Fire Outbreak In Ondo State by emmalezy(m): 8:56am On Jun 28, 2018

24 hours after fire outbreak ravaged 100 lock-up shops in Akure, the Ondo State capital, two siblings were roasted to death by another mysterious fire that gutted their home located at Edo Lodge in the metropolis.

The siblings, two-year-old ltunu and four-year-old Damilare Omolere, were left in the care of their 11-year-old elder sister, while their parents went out. While their father, Bode, travelled out of the state, their mother, Blessing, was equally not at home on the sad day.

The eldest child equally left the toddlers alone in the house only to return later to find the house engulfed in flames. Sources said the fire may have been caused by a candle that was left on the table by their sister before she left the house.

Similarly, the President of the Association of Office Documents and Computers, Elizabeth Aina, 52, whose shop was among the 100 lock-up shops gutted by fire last week has died of heart attack four days after the incident. The husband, Jacob Aina who confirmed the death of the mother of his five, adding that she owned two of the shops razed by the fire.

Celebrities / 'mamuzee Twins Killed Our Mother' - Younger Sister Makes Shocking Revelation by emmalezy(m): 9:44am On Jun 23, 2018
Augusta, the younger sister to the gospel music duo, Mamuzee Twins, has affirmed that they should be blamed for their mother’s death. The duo had earlier been called out by veteran musician, Daddy Showkey, over how they abandoned their mother for 17 years until her death, after a pastor told them she was a witch.

Augusta, while speaking at their mother’s burial said; “about six years ago, our mother was so unhappy with the fact that she had not seen her sons for a very long time. So she took two pastors and went to their house and according to the pastors that went with her, immediately they saw our mother, they went inside the room and came out with a bible".

She continued to say, 'then they stood on the Bible and placed a curse on our mother. They said that if she had come with any evil intention, she would die in a week. The pastors said that our mother could not cry; she just began to sweat. That was the final straw that broke the camel’s back because after that day, we began to visit several hospitals over her health. About two months ago, I noticed that our mother could neither eat nor drink anything. I later rushed her to Igando General Hospital and she later went into coma. My father-in-law advised me to take her picture and send it to all my siblings via Whatsapp".

"Every one of them responded, except Mamuzee, despite seeing it. All my siblings rushed to the hospital to see her, except Mamuzee. While she was alive and ill, she was always calling Mamuzee. There was a time I stumbled on her Bible and prayer books and the only thing she asked from God was for her twins to return to her. Our mother died of heartbreak and depression. The amazing thing is that our mother never laid a curse on them. Our mother gave birth to ten children. If our mother was a witch, she could have killed us but we are all healthy and doing very fine in life. Tony and Andrew killed our mother. I saw what they posted on Instagram about our mother’s death. They do not even have her recent picture. They can’t be forgiven and they won’t find peace. My mother’s spirit will take vengeance. They won’t go unpunished” she said.

Politics / Suspected Cultists Name Ogun State House Of Assembly Member As Their Sponsor by emmalezy(m): 3:34pm On Jun 07, 2018
Days after Offa bank robbery suspects implicated Senate President Bukola Saraki, two suspected cultists arrested in Ogun state have alleged that their activities were being sponsored by a member of the state House of Assembly, Yinka Mafe.

According to Punch, the cultists namely Olushola Adedeji; Olusegun Olalekan, aka Musket;Azeez aka Anene; and Abolore, aka A.B, were arrested by the operatives of the Zonal Intervention Squad, Obada, Abeokuta for allegedly shooting and killing one person, identified as Arsenal-Nice in Sagamu, Ogun State.

However, in a swift reaction, Mafe, who is also the majority leader in the state House of Assembly, denied the allegation saying he would like the cultists to be charged to court where he would defend himself.

“I don’t react to beer parlour gists. I’ll rather they are charged to a court of competent jurisdiction so I have my day in court as a lawyer to defend myself. Thanks.” he told Punch via text message

Confirming the arrest of the suspects, the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmus, said “The case is under investigation. They (suspects) said they were working for one politician, but we are investigating.

Politics / How Oshiomhole Made Oyegun APC Chairman – Idahosa by emmalezy(m): 12:02pm On May 03, 2018

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Chief Charles Idahosa, has said former Edo governor, Adams Oshiomole made Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, APC national chairman in 2014.

Idahosa said this while describing accusations that former governor Adams Oshiomhole was keen on taking Oyegun’s job as National Chairman as being ‘unfair’

He added that Oyegun had failed and had no experience like Oshiomole.

He said performance, not ethnicity or tribe should be the requirement for party leadership.

According to him, Oshiomhole dashed the chairmanship aspiration of former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Tom Ikimi and ensured the emergence of Chief Oyegun as National Chairman.

Idahosa told Sun “While I was abroad, I was reading people saying Oshiomhole wants to forcefully take the job of a Benin man. Those people are ignorant, because they don’t even know how Oyegun became chairman. What has ethnicity got to do with the national chairmanship of the APC? Oshiomhole is an Edo man just like Oyegun. Long before now, I was one of the party leaders who opposed Odigie-Oyegun – I am a Benin man like Oyegun – because the party was not growing well under him.

“I felt Oyegun did not do what he is supposed to do to keep the party together. So this has nothing to do with tribe. If it is ethnicity, I will be the first to support Oyegun.

“In 2014, myself and Oshiomhole played a very serious role to ensure the emergence of Oyegun; but a lot of people do not know that. Chief Tom Ikimi was already coasting to victory as the unopposed candidate from Edo State.

“But I made the State Working Committee to reopen the agenda when we all agreed on Tom Ikimi and it was Oshiomhole that called me to say ‘please, move the motion at the State Working Committee level, we want Oyegun. Please, Charles, do it for me, we want Oyegun, do it for me.’ And I moved the motion which changed the state’s earlier support for Chief Ikimi in favour of Oyegun.

“Oshiomhole is from Edo North, but why did he not say because Oyegun is from Benin so he will not support him?

Politics / Five Things President Trump Said About Nigeria During Buhari’s Visit by emmalezy(m): 9:14am On May 01, 2018

Immigration: No reason to apologize

“There’s no reason to apologize. Our immigration laws in this country are a total disaster. They’re laughed at all over the world. They’re laughed at for their stupidity, and we have to have strong immigration laws. I think if I apologize, it wouldn’t make ten cents’ worth of difference to them. We have nothing to apologize for. We have to have strong immigration laws to protect our country.”

Vulgar Africa remarks: We didn’t discuss it

“And you do have some countries that are in very bad shape and very tough places to live in. We didn’t discuss it, because the president knows me, and he knows where I’m coming from and I appreciate that. We did not discuss it,”

Lifting ban on sales of helicopters to Nigeria

“We’re getting it approved,” Trump said, saying the aircraft would be delivered “very soon.”

“I worked that out so now you can buy the helicopters that you want,”

“Now they get them and they get them very quickly,”

Killings of christians unacceptable

“Also we have had very serious problems with Christians who are being murdered in Nigeria, we are going to be working on that problem very, very hard because we cannot allow that to happen,”

Great Relationship with Buhari

President Trump touted his “great relationship” with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and vowed to work with him on the economy, trade, security, and “very serious problems” with Christians murdered in Nigeria.

Politics / Buhari’s Impeachment: Mission Impossible, By Reuben Abati by emmalezy(m): 9:01am On May 01, 2018

The Chairmen of the Committees on Public Accounts in the National Assembly – Kingsley Chinda (House of Representatives, PDP Rivers, Obio/Akpor Constituency) and Mathew Urhoghide (Senate, PDP Edo South) – have both had cause to ask the respective Chambers of the National Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against President Muhammadu Buhari for allowing the withdrawal of $496 million from the Excess Crude Account, without prior approval of the National Assembly and/or appropriation.

This has caused much partisan rowdiness in the National Assembly and an aborted clash between PDP supporters of Mathew Urhoghide and pro-Buhari APC stalwarts at the Benin Airport in Edo State. Impeachment is a serious and sensitive political process that could lead to the removal of the affected political leader from office. The primary issue is whether or not President Buhari has indeed committed any offence, any violation of the Constitution that should warrant his impeachment?

What constitutes the ground for impeachment is defined in Section 143 (2) (b) of the 1999 Constitution as “gross misconduct” and further in Section 143 (11) as (a) “a grave violation or breach of this Constitution”, or “a misconduct of such nature as amounts in the opinion of the National Assembly to gross misconduct.” The first ground for impeachment is literal and unambiguous and it would only need to be proven. The main allegation for now is that the President caused to be spent a sum of $496 million without the National Assembly or appropriation. Section 80 of the Constitution dealing with “power and control” over public funds refers. Section 80(1) establishes a Consolidated Revenue Fund into which “all revenues or other moneys raised or received by the Federation (not being revenues or other moneys payable under this Constitution or any Act of the National Assembly into any other public fund of the Federation established for a specific purpose) shall be paid into, but the more relevant reference is Section 80(2) which states that:

“No moneys shall be withdrawn from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation except to meet expenditure that is charged upon the fund by the Constitution or where the issue of those moneys has been authorized by an Appropriation Act, Supplementary Appropriation Act or an Act passed in pursuance of Section 81 of this Constitution.”

In other words, the government is not allowed by the Constitution to spend any money that has not been duly appropriated for, or without due authorization. The inherent and oversight role of the National Assembly is clarified in Sections 80(3), 80(4) and Section 83 (1 -2). Section 80(3) is clear enough: “No moneys shall be withdrawn from any public fund of the Federation, other than the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation unless the issue of those moneys has been authorised by an Act of the National Assembly.“ Section 80(4), for sheer emphasis it seems, reiterates the same point.

The operational word in all these Sections of the Constitution is “shall” – legally, this means “a mandatory order”. In a letter written to the National Assembly informing it of the expenditure of $496 million, without Appropriation, without a Supplementary Budget and without authorization, or even consultation, the President states that he granted “anticipatory approval.” He has no such powers under this Constitution. Nor can he seek protection under Section 82, which talks about authorization of expenditure in the absence of an Appropriation Act as is currently the case to wit:

“If the Appropriation Bill in respect of any financial year has not been passed into law by the beginning of the financial year, the President may authorize the withdrawal of moneys from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation for the purpose of meeting expenditure necessary to carry on the services of the Government of the Federation for a period not exceeding six months or until the coming into operation of the Appropriation Act, whichever is the earlier…”

Note this: “to carry on the services of the Government of the Federation…” Is the purchase of 12 aircraft part of the “services of government?”. We can argue over this but given a literal interpretation, the President is clearly in violation of the Constitution. Such authorization should be in respect of services already before the National Assembly. In the absence of this, the President should have consulted the National assembly and sought their understanding, and buy-in, before spending the money. Writing a letter after ignoring them and the Constitution is an afterthought that beggars the question.

The President is also in violation of the proviso to Section 82 in the sense that the purchase of the aircraft is not contained in the 2018 Appropriation Bill. Since it is not there and the Appropriation Bill has not been passed, the President has no basis to say that he has spent money. Can the President spend money in the event of an emergency? Section 83 of the 1999 Constitution addresses this – he can but only with the authorization of the National Assembly as in s. (83(1) and through the vehicle of a “Supplementary Estimate and a Supplementary Appropriation Bill as in s. (83(2).”

I have argued previously that the 1999 Constitution grants the President of Nigeria, enormous, if not excessive powers, but the framers of our Constitution did not extend such powers to cover indiscriminate spending of public funds, hence the combined effect of Sections 80 – 85 and S. 162 is to provide checks and balances against the possibility of anyone no matter how highly placed spending public funds, in a manner other than has been provided by the Constitution, no matter how well-intentioned he or she may be. So, President Buhari is prima facie indictable in the light of the first ground for impeachment as in Section 143(11).

The second ground is a bit nebulous, for it speaks of whatever amounts to “gross misconduct” – “in the opinion of the National Assembly.” Virtually every Nigerian has an opinion, and where the opposition dominates the National Assembly, such an Assembly can form any opinion and remove a sitting President. My own opinion in this instance however, is that there are strong grounds even on this second score for commencing impeachment proceedings against President Buhari. These include and are not limited to: his government’s routine violation and complete disregard for court order and the rule of law, human rights abuses, and his regular de-marketing of the country and Nigerians in the international community, and his apparent lack of ability to provide strategic leadership.

But the reality is that the National Assembly as presently constituted is dominated by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Nigeria’s democracy has not yet reached a level where the legislature will choose to act on a non-partisan basis. The APC may be four, five parties in one, and may be imploding but I do not see the possibility of a ruling party in Nigeria impeaching its own President.

To return to the first ground of impeachment, which stands more on terra firma, and not “opinion”, I also do not see the possibility of impeachment of either the incumbent President or any other President under the 1999 Constitution. The National Assembly has set up a Committee to consider the possibility of the commencement of impeachment proceedings – it submits its report tomorrow, Wednesday, May 2 – and there may well be some persons losing sleep over that in Buhari’s quarters, but there is actually no cause for alarm.

The framers of Section 143 (1-11) of the 1999 Constitution did not really hope that any sitting Nigerian President will ever be impeached. The rules and procedure set out under that relevant Section are so cumbersome and tedious as to make impeachment impossible. The last time anyone tried to invoke Section 143 was under President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2002 – notice of allegations were served on the then President by the House of Representatives to which he responded – but in the end nothing happened. Nothing will again happen to Buhari this time around. He will not be impeached because the relevant Constitutional provisions in Section 143 are too windy.

One, an impeachment process is initiated when “a notice of allegation” is presented to the President of the Senate by “not less than one-third of the members of the National Assembly” accusing the office of the President or Vice President of “gross misconduct (s. 80 (2).” As at the time of this writing, no such notice has been presented. One-third of the entire Assembly (!) – that’s like wishful thinking. Section 143 (4) again presents this dilemma of numbers when it says, if the National Assembly decides to investigate the allegations, it can only do so if it is supported by “not less than two-thirds majority of all the members of each House of the National Assembly.”

By the time we get to this stage, 21 days would have passed, and that is part of the problem with the rules of procedure on impeachment in Section 143. It would take at least six months or more for any Nigerian President to be impeached. The giver of the law created a problem here with numbers and also with time, and a bigger problem with the introduction of the judiciary into what should be purely a political process. In Section 140 (5), the judiciary is brought into the conflict, ensuring a possible clash among all three arms of government in the impeachment process.

The Chief of Justice of Nigeria (CJN) is given additional seven days (28 days now in total) to “at the request of the President of the Senate appoint a Panel of seven persons who in his opinion are of unquestionable integrity, not being members of any public service, legislative house or political party, to investigate the allegation as provided in this section.” Section 143 is thus loaded, from 1-11, with so many make or kill, elimination tests, and this is perhaps the most critical. Can we really rely on the opinion of the CJN to select seven apolitical, non-partisan persons of “unquestionable integrity?” Where are those seven persons coming from? Heaven?, because no such persons exist in Nigeria. And should such seven persons be identified, there is nothing in this section barring interested parties or the Executive, and its agents from discrediting such persons. How many “unquestionable” Nigerians would even agree to serve on such a panel, if at all they exist?

Assuming a panel of seven emerges, the person to be impeached still has the right to be defended by legal practitioners of his choice. Thus Section 143 (6) is in pari materia with Section 36 of the Constitution which guarantees the right to fair hearing, but it is another bottle-neck which can go on for three months – (section 143(7) – or much longer by the time the lawyers exploit technicalities to prolong the proceedings. Section 143(7) (b) further presents a serious bottle-neck: the constituted panel must report its findings to each House of the National Assembly within three months of its appointment.

Section 143(cool says if the allegations are not proven, then the process stands aborted, but in the event of either this or the opposite addressed in Section 143(9), the Constitution only asks for two-thirds majority to determine the fate of the affected political office holder, it says nothing about the procedure for removal, now mentioned for the first time as a consequential effect. To the best of our knowledge, the National Assembly does not even have such a procedure in place, except it will create an emergency one, because the full import of Section 143 has not yet been tested. Being a political process, stricto senso, the Courts are further estopped under Section 143(11) from inquiring into an impeachment process.

Section 143 of the 1999 is in our view, therefore, a jurisprudential nightmare. If we really want to prevent our Presidents from hiding under the Constitution to become tyrants, this particular section of the Constitution needs to be reviewed. The National Assembly should put in place standard rules and procedures to give live to the process in the need of activation of Section 143. The judiciary should also be removed from the process, as is the case in the United States. A compromised CJN would readily frustrate the process since his “opinion” is so important!

Section 143 makes it difficult as it is, to remove a President, especially given our situation where there is so much emphasis on money-politics, political affiliation, ethnicity, religion and loyalty to the President and primordial sentiments. Some characters called elder statesmen and traditional rulers may even intervene to derail the impeachment process. The quality of legislators is also important: to protect and uphold the Constitution, we need people who understand that loyalty to the nation is more important than loyalty to the President or religious and ethnic sentiments. The present set of dancing, sleeping, singing, fibbing, cradle-snatching, compromised persons who end up in the National Assembly cannot do it.

The worst that they can do is to further damage President Muhammadu Buhari’s reputation. Mere talk about or the commencement of impeachment proceedings on its own, has negative political consequences, especially in an election season – even US President Bill Clinton did not fully recover from it although he was impeached but was not removed from office.

The view has been expressed that the National Assembly should not bother to test Section 143 because this may have implications for the stability of the country in an election season, or that, well, President Buhari is almost completing his first term. I disagree. The responsibility to protect and uphold the Constitution must not be sacrificed on the altar of political expediency, even if all things considered, President Buhari needs not lose any sleep.

Celebrities / Bbnaija: Ebuka Reveals How Housemates Were Picked by emmalezy(m): 4:02pm On Apr 29, 2018

Big Brother Naija 2018 host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu has finally satisfied the viewers queries on the selection criteria for the most popular reality TV show in the county. According to him the housemates were selected based on their different characters.

Ebuka mentioned this while on a radio interview with BeatFM.

He said contrary to rumours that Tobi was picked because he worked with Heritage bank, the sponsors of the reality show were not part of the auditions and they could not have chosen housemates.

Ebuka said:

“Housemates were picked for different reasons. Khloe for example was picked for drama, Vandora was a happy girl. It is not all about talent, you never know what they are looking for in the audition.

There will be a drama person, a happy person, housemates’ characters are mixed. So, if for example 2 dramatic persons have been picked already, they will move to the next character.

They have a template of what they want from housemates, it depends on them.

The auditioners also realized that some housemates try so hard to be someone else in the house; maybe they got intimated by other characters or they tried so hard to be what they are not in the audition.”

He was then asked on how the prospective contestants for the 2019 edition of the show, should prepare.

“Well, all I will simply say is that everyone that wants to be on the show, should just be themselves. You might quite lucky it is your character they are just looking for at the moment of auditioning”

Remember there is a on-going controversy on Ebuka, the show host and a contestant of the show, Cee-C. Photos of them before the reality TV show surfaced on the internet some few days ago and this was contrary to Ebuka’s statement about him never meeting Cee-C before the show kicked off.

Politics / Herdsmen: Be Prepared, Benue On Fire – Ortom Tells Citizens by emmalezy(m): 11:31am On Apr 28, 2018

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has declared that the state is currently on fire.

Ortom said he had to cut short his vacation because of the senseless killing of his people by herdsmen.

Speaking shortly after arriving the country from his holiday abroad, the emotion-laden governor asserted that the climax of the whole attacks was the recent killing of two clerics and 17 others in the state.

The governor, who fought back tears while addressing newsmen at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, called on his people to get prepared.

He said, “There is no way my state would be on fire with the magnitude of what we are seeing today and I’ll still be on vacation. I cannot be on vacation when the entire state is on fire to this magnitude. I never expected what is happening to have taken place. I know my Deputy, the Acting Governor is doing his best.

“I’ve been in touch with him on daily basis but at this particular time he needs me and other stakeholders of the state to come together, and of course the Presidency, to stop this pogrom that is going on. This is unwarranted. There is no basis for this whatsoever.

“The fact that we have chosen to be law abiding should not be seen as weakness on our side but we’ve chosen that we’ll support government and ensure that at all times we follow due process, we respect the laws of the land and that is why we’ve not taken laws into our hands.

“I’ll continue to appeal to our people to be law abiding but this thing has to stop. Like I keep saying after Benue it’ll be another state. So it’s not just about Benue. You can see the killings going on all over the place. But the climax of this is the killing of clergymen worshiping in the house of God.

“That is what has led me not to even think about sleeping but to come back. I believe that the Presidency would definitely act on this. We appreciate Mr. President for coming out to condemn this act and I believe he will also direct that these people must be arrested because they are known. The security operatives know where they are and there is every need for us to support the security agencies because I’ve also appreciated the fact that they’re really overwhelmed with the situation.

“The communities must come together and do everything that is law abiding to defend themselves. I’ve always said that self preservation is the first law of nature. There’s no point running away. I’m aware that people who ran away to IDP camps were also killed so why are you running? Those who did not run were killed, those who ran were killed.

“So, it is better, if you make some attempts and support the security agencies, you may have some way of helping so there is no point running away. The Federal Government is aware of this, the state Government is aware of this, and the security agencies are aware of this but they are completely overwhelmed.

“Nigerians, Benue State people must rise up so that together we can work with security agencies and see where we can come in whether by way of logistics, by way of physical support to the security agencies to ensure that they overcome this. It’ll be better for all of us. There is no point running away.

“Every Benue State man and woman must be prepared because Benue State is under siege and we have no other place to go. We can’t go to any other state and take over the land of another state. It’s a land we have and we must stand to defend it but we must be law abiding in all that we’re going to do. I believe that based on the statement from the Presidency action would be followed and these killings would stop.

“I want to condole Benue people especially the Catholic Church. This is unwarranted, people who have made sacrifice of their lives to preach peace and bring love for mankind to pass through this kind of thing I think it’s unwarranted and this will not be accepted.”

Politics / Nigeria’s Unity Is My Paramount Objective – Buhari by emmalezy(m): 8:33pm On Apr 27, 2018

President Muhammadu Buhari has reassured Nigerians that the unity of the country will remain his paramount objective and that of his administration.

The President gave the assurance on Friday when he received a delegation of the Tijjaniya Movement led by Sheikh Muhammadu Inyass at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Politics / Herdsmen Killings: Resign Now – House Of Reps Aspirant Tells Buhari by emmalezy(m): 3:07pm On Apr 26, 2018

Following the incessant killings of Nigerians by suspected killer herdsmen with no solution at hand, a House of Representatives hopeful for Ughelli and Udu Federal Constituency, Comrade Akpokona Omafuaire, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign, stressing that,”He is incompetent.”

In a statement signed and sent to DAILY POST, Omafuaire said With the daily killings, it is obvious the President has failed in his primary duty.

Omafuaire noted that President Buhari swore to the Nigerian constitution which prescribed one of the key functions of the President as securing lives and property.

Omafuaire stated that, “Since his emergency, Buhari has shown enough course for every reasonable Nigerian to believe that his intent was to foster an ethnic agenda of whipping out other ethnic groups.

“The questionable manner he withdrew monies without recourse to the National Assembly and the use of state security apparatus to hound opposition is a great threat to our democracy.

“The President is enmeshed in his second term agenda bid and does not care what happens to the people he is leading, so it is time for him to resign and go home. ”

Politics / APC Snubs Modu-sheriff, Tells Him To Join At Ward Level by emmalezy(m): 2:45pm On Apr 26, 2018

The national leadership of the All Progressives Congress has asked a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff, who has expressed his desire to join the ruling party in Abuja, to do so at his ward.

Sheriff was scheduled to storm the national headquarters of the party in Abuja by noon on Thursday with his supporters, where he would have declared for the party.

He was billed to be received by the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and other members of the party’s National Working Committee.

However, our correspondent observed that none of the national officers of the party was on ground to receive the former governor of Borno State.

This action, it was gathered, was an indication to Modu-Sheriff and his supporters that the party was not favourably disposed to his joining the party.

A three-paragraph statement was nevertheless issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the ruling party, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, in which he directed Modu-Sheriff to join the party in his ward.

The statement read, “Our attention has been drawn to reports in some sections of the media that the former factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress today at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja.

“While we are aware of such intentions, we wish to restate our earlier position that anyone who wants to join the Party should do so at the ward level.

“We are happy to welcome new members to our party, but membership cards are not issued at the Party National Secretariat.”

Politics / 2019: Obasanjo Reveals Why Igbos Should Vote Out Buhari, Speaks On Killlings by emmalezy(m): 9:51am On Apr 26, 2018
Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday told the Igbos to vote out President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 general elections in their own interest.

Obasanjo, speaking at a meeting of the Coalition of Nigerian Moment in Awka, Anambra State said the Igbos would be the most beneficiary in Buhari’s ouster, advising them not to believe the promise that the Igbo would produce the President in 2023.

He described the reports as “a grand deceit and evil machination.”

Speaking through the South East convener of CNM, Dr. Okey Nwosu, the ex-president asked the people of the zone to “collectively work with the CNM towards ousting Buhari from office in the 2019 general elections.”

He said, “The meeting is a wake-up call for Nd’Igbo to dump APC and collaborate with CNM, which is the best alternative for their rescue from poverty, hunger, recklessness and ethnic cleansing in the hands of the Hausa/Fulani marauders.

“Every Nigerian leader is very much embarrassed with the state of the nation where people are attacked, killed, raped and made refuges in their own homes.

“Political leaders must advocate action against these senseless killings and seek how to design a new democratic action plan to ensure we take care of this conundrum democratically, and say, ‘Enough is enough.’

“If unchecked, these unethical activities will lead to the destruction of the country. It does not augur well for Nigeria’s development.

“The objective of CNM was mostly on how to sack Buhari from Aso Rock in 2019 and ensure that a visionary government is elected.

“Nigeria’s eminent personalities, including Generals Yakubu Gowon, Ibrahim Babangida and T.Y. Danjuma have all spoken and condemned the killings and destruction in the country.

“If these people can say that the nation needs to be saved from these calamities, the South-East geo-political zone must add their voice to the clarion call.

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has passionately appealed to Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo to reverse recent increase in the tuition fees in state-owned institutions in the state.

He said the recent increase in the tuition fees was alarming and beyond normal situation, adding that the development would be inimical to educational development of the state, if not reversed.

Okereafor said that students had been paying between N25, 000 and N30, 000 but noted that the fees had been increased to N120,000 and N180,000 respectively in state-owned institutions.

He stressed that otherwise; the national secretariat of NANS would be moved to Akure the state capital.

“Unarguably, many female students may be lured into prostitution while the male students may be lured into cultism and armed robbery due to the inability of their parents to pay the proposed tuition fee,’’ he said.

He said that NANS had been uncomfortable with the increase in the tuition fees without due consultations and consideration of the present economic realities in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Ondo, the state capital, witnessed uneasy calm four days ago as students of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, Akoko protested over 500 per cent hike in their tuition fees.

They marched through the streets of the town, joined by market women and caused gridlock as well as lull in commercial and social activities in the area.

Politics / Why Youths Below 35 Years May Not Dominate Nigeria’s Political Space – Jonathan by emmalezy(m): 10:34am On Apr 12, 2018
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said he does not envision a situation where youths below 35 years would dominate political space in Nigeria.

He spoke while receiving the New Nigeria 2019, NN-2019 group and the Young Professionals of Nigeria, YPN, led by Chima Nwafor and Moses Siasia, in Yenogoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

He lamented that youths were being used for social vices like “cultism, kidnapping, hired killers.”

Jonathan, however, encouraged youths to play key roles in governance.

According to Jonathan, “I am not envisioning a government that every actor will be below thirty-five years old, but I share the aspiration of those who want young people to be fully involved in governance.

“I remember when Alfred Diette Spiff was the military governor of the then old Rivers State, most of the members of his cabinet were older than him and even referred to him as ‘my son,’ but together they achieved much in infrastructure and human development.”

“Before I leave, let me charge the young people in two areas: the young must reform the old for us to grow positively. At the same time most of the challenges we are having in the society; it is not that the young people created them, but they are being used negatively. We talk about cultism, hired killers, terror, kidnapping, the elderly cannot enter the bush to go and stay for days.

“A group like yours constituting of CEOs, how do you create platforms to re-orientate the thinking of our young peopl?. I am glad that you mentioned setting up similar bodies, across the country.

“At least, even if you start from the universities and secondary schools, to change the mindset of the youths. Youth movements like Boys Scout, Boys Brigade and Girls Guide, developed from this kind of thinking.

“The growth of society should not be marked by flashy cars, sky scrapers and beautiful roads but by the people, the way they think and the way they do things

Politics / Buhari Extends VAIDS Deadline To June 30 by emmalezy(m): 4:50pm On Apr 11, 2018

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the extension of the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) to June 30, 2018.

His spokesman, Femi Adesina, in a statement on Wednesday, said the extension after the original March 31 date followed the appeals of professional bodies and individual taxpayers.

“However, no further extension of time will be approved after June 30”, the statement said.

The President added that a new date was also given, based on the conviction of the Ministry of Finance that the overall objective to increase compliance will be attained, and additional revenue will accrue.

A fresh Executive Order will be made to give legal backing to the new timeline.

According to President Buhari, “For a nation of people who are competitive and driven, it is not a pride that we are the lowest performer in tax to GDP, not just in Africa, but in the world.

“Nigeria’s growth needs are such that every Nigerian must do his duty to his nation, to his neighbour, and to himself.

“Hiding monies overseas, evading taxes by manipulation, and other unwholesome practices, have never developed a country, and for Nigeria to attain her true potential, these must stop.”

The President urged Nigerian companies and individuals to join government in the rebuilding mission, “and do the right thing by taking this window of extension to regularize.”

He added that the right thing may not be convenient or comfortable, “but in the long run, we will all have a nation we can be proud of.”

President Buhari further urged tax authorities to use the extension window to perfect plans to prosecute those who fail to regularize their tax status.

Politics / Governor Yahaya Bello Assures Buhari Of Support For His Re-election Bid by emmalezy(m): 6:11pm On Apr 09, 2018

Kogi State Governor, Alh. Yahaya Bello has pledged the support of the people of Kogi State to the re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Governor gave the assurance in a statement signed by his Director General of Media and Publicity, Mr Kingsley Fanwo.

President Buhari, at a NEC Meeting of his ruling APC, Monday, declared his intention to vie for a second term in office.

Governor Bello is viewed by many as a die-hard supporter of Mr President.

He didn’t agree less: “I am a staunch supporter of Mr President and I am proud to be associated with such a great leader and personality”, he said.

The Governor reminded President Buhari that the people of Kogi State were the first to call on him to see re-election in next year’s Presidential poll at rallies organized in Anyigba, Kabba, Isanlu, Olamaboro and Okene which attracted hundreds of thousands of attendants.

“We thank Mr President for listening to the voices of Nigerians who are satisfied with his performance. Kogi people were the first to organize rallies in different towns and cities to call on Mr President to seek re-election.

“As the leader of the state, I wish to assure Mr. President that my people are solidly behind his policies of economic recovery, security and the fight against corruption. Kogi will deliver to Mr President, more votes than the state gave in 2015.

“We are going to focus on the economic recovery of our state and ensure more people are empowered to become productive. That has been the mainstay of our economic policies as a government.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has not lost his magic touch. He is a trusted leader who the masses want as their President beyond 2019. But it is also instructive for us to know that corruption will begin to fight back with renewed vigor to stop the march of the masses. We shall triumph”.

Governor Bello urged leaders of the All Progressives Congress to remain united behind the interest of the nation rather than “trigger divisive explosions within the ranks of the party”, warning that some politicians who have lost relevance among their people are out to “damage the good atmosphere in the ruling party”.

“The position of Mr President Party congresses is a welcome development. When a trusted leader speaks, followers believe him and toe the line of wisdom. We must be united against people who know they have come to their political dead ends.

“Today’s declaration of Mr President for second term has further reinvigorated our belief that he will continue to make sacrifices for the greatness of our nation”.

Founder and C.E.O of Payporte, the official sponsor of Big Brother Naija 2018, Eyo Bassey, has reacted to the eviction of housemates, Teddy A and Bambam from the on-going reality show.

Teddy A was on Sunday night evicted, few hours after his romantic partner, Bambam also got evicted.

Reacting, Eyo stated that housemates were warned that sex or nudity didn’t guarantee support from viewers.

DAILY POST recalls that Bambam and Teddy A were caught having sex in the toilet.

Eyo wrote on Twitter: ”I hope everyone will understand and see clearly that ‘sex and nudity does not sell on #BBnaija. @payporte has maintained this position. Compared to last season when neither sex or nudity was televised we all can judge. I hope my fellow colleagues can get the message. #Bamteddy.

”I warned and they refused to listen. Sex doesn’t sell this @bigbrothernaija. we insisted on this last season and the show was clean and shattered all records. This weekend eviction is another pointer.”

Politics / Nigerians Should Be Ashamed For Slandering Our Name – Luther King Speaks by emmalezy(m): 4:58pm On Apr 01, 2018

A family member of Martin Luther King, Isaac has cleared the air on controversies surrounding the award given to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking to TVC, Isaac Luther King said his family’s visit to Nigeria was humanitarian refuting reports that they were paid to embark on the move.

He expressed disappointment in Nigerians for the criticisms trailing his family’s visit to Buhari.

According to him, he came to establish a bond with Nigeria based on his family’s love for the country.

He told the TV station, “I am the nephew of Martin Luther King Jnr, I served for a period of five years as president of King’s centre. You cannot buy me or anyone else in my family

“So the fake news, slander on my good character is a lie.

“Anything that I have done or said about your president came from my heart or brain not based on any compensation, money or in exchange for anything.

“We don’t deal like that, we don’t do things based on money, we do based on principles.

“None of three branches of Martin Luther Kings family are bribe-able or buy-able.

“We don’t do things for money, I’m insulted, anyone in Nigeria should be ashamed for slandering our good name.

“We came here to honour your country, your people and to establish a new bond between Americans and Africans.”

The Presidency had earlier confirmed that Buhari received a ‘commemorative plaque’ not an award as reported in the media.
