Geniuses are born and not made.
Good day Mr. Chairman, erudite judges, the coordinators of this debate,
accurate time keeper, distinguished audience.


I am very happy that you all
have set a time aside to read this e-debate.
I am Emmanuel, representing Kogi State University, Anyigba. I will be
taking a stance on the motion which says, “Geniuses are born and not made.”
To begin with, what does the word “genius” even mean?


According to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, a genius is
someone who has an unusually high level of intelligence, mental, skill, or
ability.


Oxford Dictionary defines genius as someone who has exceptional
intellectual power or creativity power or other natural ability or tendency.


From the above definitions, we can say geniuses are exceptionally
intelligent people who make a measurable and unique contribution to their
field of expertise or the world at large. A genius has high IQ. We should
know that IQ is inherited. So, it proves that geniuses are born. A genius
does not study. He researches life to make sure it can sustain his own
existence.


In our various institutions we can notice that there are some students who
study 15 hours out of the 24 hours in a day still, they cannot secure a C’
in their exams while some students would just study for an hour or two and
they are topping the class then what would we call that? Yes! It is called
born genius because a genius does not struggle while others are struggling.
He is being
endowed with a supernatural gift; he knows his left from the right.


Plenty of people are smart and even intelligent, but they are not quite
geniuses because they lack creative abilities required. Other people are
creative to some extent, but they do not have the intellectual capability
to harness their creativity.


Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge, and
this imaginative power is what a genius possesses”. They reason far better
than normal people do. This quotation goes to say education is not the
necessity to being a genius. Knowledge is just static awareness while
imagination is dynamic creation.


Let also take the birth of our lord Jesus into consideration. God Himself
did not raise a man already in the world to save the world from sin. He
been the creator of the Universe knows that geniuses are born not made. That
is why Jesus Christ was given birth to and endowed with supernatural
qualities to save the world from trespasses.


I have been an advocate against the act of parents forcing their children
to school, just because Mr. A’s son is a medical doctor, they also want
theirs to become a medical doctor. They have forgotten the proverb: You can
only take a Donkey to the river but you can never force it to drink water.
When their ward starts doing bad academically they would start blaming
people from their village(s) who does not want such child to thrive or most
times, the child for his failure just because they forcefully want to make
him a fairy tale genius which they do not know that a genius is being born
not made.



Thomas Edison said he was born a genius but did not know until he finally
invented a bulb which he tried inventing for more than 1,000 times. And it
is worthy to note that our great philosophers, the likes of Socrates,
Aristotle and Thales who serve as the pillar of wisdom were not a “made
geniuses” but “born geniuses” because during this era there was not a wide
spread of formal education in short no education then to broaden their mind
but due to fact there were born geniuses they were able to think beyond
human reasoning.



I will re-iterate that a very smart person could be said to be made, but a
genius is not. The production of very smart people may be impressive, but
it probably would not be groundbreaking -- building on existing ideas
rather than forging new territory. These new ideas are definitely what they
learnt. A genius develops on new path for others to follow. The motivation
of a very smart person is also likely to be different from a genius’. It
could be money, status, genuine interest in a subject.



Finally, I will be leaving you with this question, if you think that anyone
can become a “made genius” through hard work, practice, etc. why the
majority of people are not genius then?
