Godmother: I am an Urhobo lady so I knw the pride that flows strongly in the veins of urhobo men. I just wonder if the modern day( educated and enlightened ) urhobo men still have that annoying prideAre you suggesting that there is a relationship between refinement (“education” and “enlightenment”) and pride? Or maybe the way pride is exhibited? From my own observation...the minority ethnic groups in Naija (well at least in the south) have a higher volume of pride (I’m not saying that’s good nor am I saying it’s bad...well it’s largely dependent on how its exhibited) but they fiercely echo their identity; I believe it may be because of their relatively small population or at least partly. Well this is purely from my own observation another’s may differ or mine may have just been coincidental. |
Hi Ptolomeus I really appreciate your response and well wishes ![]() Ptolomeus: When logic and rationality fails, aim for the faith.Exactly Ptolomeus. With respect to spiritism.Yes you are right. Once I went to an orthodox church and they were paying obeisance to saints. Now if an animist was to pay their respects in their own traditional way to their own blood ancestors that would somehow qualify as "devilish", "primitive" etc you name it. |
ifyalways: Ah,no names?I've got some liver so here goes :Drogba used some Ivorian jazz on F. Torres legs.lolLol Ifyalways honestly I had no names in mind...all the details in my head were slightly sketchy but this is the first time I’m hearing that Drogba went to consult traditional gods...and here I was thinking that all he had was down to skill and hardwork @Topic,I think it becomes sensational and "news" because the footballers themseleves claim to be or are known as Christians/muslims and therefore should not consult 'black gods' for favors. You can't be white by dawn and black by dusk.If they are known all over as faithful devouts of ATR's or Animism, this wont raise no dust. You have a valid point and I never considered that being a reason as to why there was such a ripple of sensation when these stories surface but that does make sense. Growing up in the Diaspora the views on African traditional religion has rarely been positive and often stereotyped but then again how much would an average foreigner know?. But a few times I’ve read some columns exposing and subtlety mocking African footballers/fans etc that consult traditional gods as if to highlight their “primitiveness” or even “cheating” in some ways because African traditional religion is often attached to black magic etc – so I guess to some people magic = cheating. Yet other footballers and fans pray to Allah or Jehovah for a "miracle" and there’s no controversy over that. At first I used to wonder is it because these traditional gods are alien to outsiders but then I doubt that's the main reason because even some Africans sef are guilty of sneering ....so I guess it’s most likely the reputation these traditional gods carry. On second thoughts maybe these people were scared lol. It’s not only Africa though because I once read that one native doctor in Ecuador was trying to aid the success of his national team but dem lose sha lol. |
lol d'accord ![]() |
I have the right to assert the undeniable fact that I have more legitimacy over you as to what activities occurs in my own dream and that your fabricated tales about my being based on bruised emotions and impersonal anecdotes is not the truth of my reality. Makes one wonder how you arrived to the so called “truth” of your faith since you seem to invent your own truths desperately seeking for evidence to counter others. I can safely surmise that the "spirit of truth" seems not to be dwelling in you. |

Initially when I read the first part of the story I found it sad and it even reminded me of the 1959 movie "Imitation of Life". However when I read the second part I couldn’t help thinking if this story is possibly fake because I’ve heard a similar story but it was between a married couple ![]() Well to answer your question I wouldn’t do that to my mother even though she’s won’t take that crappy behaviour from me. |
Occasionally I’ve come across stories revealing some African footballers and fans apparently consulting their native gods to intercede for them in their matches. The reactions to these stories at times is nothing short of incredible and sensational considering that some footballers and fans adhering to an Abrahamic faith also submit their own supplication to their god in their time of need – including asking for favour for upcoming matches. I thus wonder what is essentially the difference between an animist seeking favour from their god(s) and that of a Christian/Muslim praying to their own god? Why is it that somehow one is acceptable but the other a taboo? Why is one seen as faithful and the other cheating? |
I'm fine Nayah...I'm even planning on purchasing some traditional wear for the summer ...Et toi? How are you? |
mazaje: ...muslims seeking validation for their religion through christianity...I've noticed this as well but I guess this thread also serves to highlight...how much do believers actually know about their faith? |
Jenwitemi: No. Science shouldn't be the only legitimate guide because it is and still remains not the only means but one of many guiding forces. The second reason is that it is just as corruptible as the other means like religion and can mislead just like religion. All available doors should and must be opened to man to explore through.Best answer yet. |
Image123: eyah, your conscience pricked you. your dreams are hapless, confirmed. You can't and shouldn't compare the real and historical Jesus birth to castle in the air fantasies about been pregnant. wake upIn this same manner is this how you deceive yourself about the authenticity of your faith? |
@Buzugee Hmmm interesting but I’m gonna have to research all that for myself. there is no such thing as immaculate conceptionTo me it's also a contradiction but I believe the term “immaculate conception” was used to highlight that an alleged virgin was with child - which kinda reveals how sex is regarded by some because the term "immaculate conception" kinda makes it seem that conceiving through the natural way is actually considered unclean. In addition, we all apparently inherited our "sinful nature" due to Adam’s fall but Jesus wasn’t born in sin...is it because he wasn’t conceived via “sex”? Is sex thus how this supposed "sin nature" is translated into our being? If so what of IVF children etc?....the difference between Jesus and “test tube babies” is that according to the bible no man was responsible for his birth...thus is this alleged "sin nature" passed on through the male marker? *just thinking out loud and there may be plenty holes in my statement* |
Hola Ptolomeus Hope all is well. ![]() Ptolomeus, according to Christians and the Bible the Holy Spirit apparently didn’t have sex with “Virgin” Mary. The story of the “virgin birth” is often hailed as the “immaculate conception” because miraculously (without the use of sex allegedly) the Holy Spirit managed to get a "virgin" pregnant. Christians despise spiritist religions ... but forget that they too areYou have a point there but I think the supernatural in all belief systems is clipped to spirits/immateriality but it's somehow demonic when those spirits appear in other belief systems. |
Yeah I figured. I particularly like the traditional attire of the Bamiléké and Bamenda . |

Are you trying to be funny or combative? Have I ever discussed details of my dreams with you? Bearing false witness eh? No I am not comparing the “reality of Jesus” with my alleged “hapless dream”. I was comparing the nature of the alleged “immaculate conception” to the resultant of the conception caused by the coupling of what some Christians term as a “spiritual husband/wives” which may occur in the dream which is considered as part of the spiritual realm by some Christians. |

I suppose there was always that danger of concentrating on a specific group of a particular demographic thereby making them appear bigger than they're actually are because they’re under focus. I wouldn’t even call it doctrine but a viewpoint regarding certain spiritual matters and I actually think it stems from their traditional backgrounds moreso than the bible. They just happened to be Christians so their views concerning the spiritual world may be combined with certain elements of their faith. |
Some nice garments on display, a couple reminded me of Nigerian ones. |
I'm actually not much a fan of jollof rice, you? |
Oh you're Polynesian? Cool...I'm kinda intrigued by the culture and I love the native tatts too - sorry to derail slightly but do Samoans also have their own style of "haka"? ...I was just under the impression that all Polynesians kinda do.... As to your question I'm not Ijaw so unfortunately I'm not entirely sure about the existence of tattoos in their culture - but if it turned out they had other means of body art instead ...take for instance scarification...would you consider it?... Sorry one more question....how do Polynesians create their tatts?...(I'm assuming it's not as other tattoos are done in popular culture) |
