Actually musaabaqatul Quran is included in the hadith as explained by ibnul Qoyyim in Al-furoosiyyah.

And also, take note that nowhere in the story was it said the the elephants were on there way to the river the way it was said for the rabbit and the monkey. Also, one has to note that, that every elephant saw two monkeys doesn't necessarily mean each of the elephants saw 2 different monkeys, and so the assumption that the total number of the monkeys are 12 is not possible. In my own view, I suppose the 6 elephants saw 2 monkeys.

So 1 rabbit + 2 monkeys + 2 parrots = 5 animals

About their age mates entering into unholy relationships and having children, I simply think it's bcoz they are wayward and unfortunate.
