The International Monetary Fund says Nigeria and other West African countries will lose a combined sum of $40bn in their Gross Domestic Products if governments fail to curtail the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease on time. According to IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook released on Tuesday, sub-Saharan Africa’s economic growth remains strong and should accelerate to 5.8 per cent in 2015 but if the Ebola outbreak in its western corner is protracted or spreads it will have “dramatic consequences” for the zone. The Fund said Africa should repeat 2013’s growth rate of 5.1 per cent this year and then accelerate in 2015 as infrastructure investments boost efficiency and the service sectors and agriculture flourish. The 2015 forecast was an improvement on the 5.5 per cent growth for the overall region projected by the IMF in April. “This overall positive outlook is, however, overshadowed by the dire situation in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, where the current Ebola outbreak is exacting a heavy human and economic toll,” the report’s Sub-Saharan Africa section said. “Should the Ebola outbreak become more protracted or spread to more countries, it would have dramatic consequences for economic activity in the west African region,” the IMF added. In a separate report, the World Bank said that without a scaled-up response, transportation, cross-border trade, supply chains and tourism in West Africa could be “severely disrupted”, costing the region as a whole tens of billions of dollars. “With our estimates of the impact of West Africa alone, even in a less tragic case, the lost GDP is likely to run into the billions,” David Evans, Senior Economist of the World Bank’s Africa Division, said. “And in a worse case, we have even higher numbers (more than $40bn),” he told the Reuters Global Markets Forum. The security situation in several parts of Sub-Saharan Africa remained fragile, the IMF said, noting rumbling internal conflicts in South Sudan and Central African Republic. Growth in South Africa, the continent’s most advanced economy, had been lacklustre, hit by protracted strikes, low business confidence and tight electricity supply, the IMF said. But it saw “muted recovery” taking hold in 2015 through improving labor relations and gradually stronger exports that would push South African growth to 2.3 per cent from a forecast 1.4 per cent this year. By contrast, Nigeria – the continent’s top oil producer which overtook South Africa as its biggest economy this year after a dramatic GDP rebasing – is forecast to expand seven per cent this year and 7.3 per cent in 2015, the Fund said. Some African economies had been able to increasingly tap capital markets, with recent sovereign bond issuances in the Eurodollar market largely oversubscribed, the report said, citing maiden issues by Kenya and Ivory Coast. African currencies had also generally stabilized after weakening in 2013, with some exceptions. The IMF report singled out Ghana’s cedi, whose continued downward pressure reflected “domestic policy slippages”, and Zambia’s kwacha, which fell heavily in the first half of the year before recovering some lost ground. http://www.punchng.com/business/money/nigeria-others-may-lose-40bn-to-ebola-imf/ |
Nigeria’s active internet users currently stands at over 48 million, Dr Peter Jack, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has said. A statement issued by NITDA’s Head of Public Affairs, Mrs Hadiza Umar in Abuja on Tuesday, stated that Jack made the assertion in a speech at the global media meet in Dubai. The meeting was preparatory to the Global Information Technology Exhibition Week 2014. Jack said, “In Nigeria, with over 48 million regular internet users, various activities are being carried out online. “We are currently measuring the impact of the plan and implementation level in preparation for review next year. “ICT contributes over 8 per cent to the Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product and is now growing at 7 per cent annually. “Our target is to grow the ICT industry to a point where it contributes up to 15 per cent to the GDP within the next three to five years.” The director-general explained that NITDA had developed a national Information and Communication Technology Strategic Plan with a timeline of 2010-2015. According to him, the implementation of the plan is ongoing in sectors, such as education, agriculture, health, governance and the judiciary. Other areas are human capital development and national security, among others, which have propelled the level of development in the ICT sector, he said. Jack said, “Specifically, we have embarked on some smart initiatives which include national e-government master plan and strategy. “The others are the Tinapa Knowledge City, with a full-fledged IT Park and Software Development Centre and we also plan to site a Reverse Engineering Centre in the facility. “The Lekki Smart City Initiative, Lagos Innovation City and the Lekki Software Development Academy, which is planned to house a software incubator and accelerator, are among the initiatives. “There is the iDEA Hub, which is our pilot programme in software incubation and innovation and Software Development and Testing Centre.” (NAN) |

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has commended the General Overseer (GO) of the Redeem Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, for dissociating himself and the church from the offensive and divisive audio CD that is being circulated by certain political Pastors. In a statement issued in Lagos on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said by his action, the GO has again exhibited his characteristic exceptional leadership and shown what religion should be about, which is love, rather than hate and incendiary statements. It particularly expressed satisfaction that the GO specifically asked the RCCG Pastors to ignore the contents of the audio CD, especially all the references to political parties, including the APC. ”The GO’s statement, in his response to the APC which had written to protest the divisive and corrosive statements contained in the audio CD, which has been smuggled into some RCCG parishes, made it clear that the RCCG is neutral and apolitical, and that it prays for all irrespective of political persuasion or creed. ”We in the APC are delighted at the GO’s prompt action and statement that the RCCG did not endorse divisive comments in any form or shape, that it has sons and daughters in all political parties, and that the allegations contained in the audio CD are wickedly false, unsubstantiated, ill-conceived and mischievous. ”Equally satisfying is the GO’s directive asking everyone in possession of the audio CDs to return them, and the directive to the Church’s Pastors to communicate such to their respective congregations immediately,” APC said. On the obviously-sponsored audio CD, produced by one Pastor Bosun Emmanuel, the party wondered why a man of God will engage in outright lies to propagate hatred, incite Christians against Muslims so brazenly, as if the adherents of both religions are not children of the same God, and then use the platform of the church to campaign for the PDP while seeking to destroy the APC. ”In a country where the citizenry, whether Christians or Muslims, have been shortchanged by greedy, selfish and clueless political leadership, a Pastor went on record as saying President Goodluck Jonathan has performed 100%, while at the same time demonizing and denigrating the APC as an ‘Islamic Party’ without a scintilla of proof. Much as he struggled to couch his inflammatory and discordant message in flowery lies, it is clear that he was sponsored to inseminate lies to shore up the dwindling fortunes of the ruling party ”Where in the world has an Islamic Party been led by a Christian? Where in the world has the membership of an Islamic Party been populated by Christians and Muslims? Why would a Pastor whose primary purpose is to preach the Gospel (good news) now make himself available, for whatever reason, as a tool to disseminate lies and bad news? ”Had this Pastor any sense of history, he would have realized how the propagation of hatred, as he is currently doing, led to the killing of over 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutu in Rwanda in 1994. This Pastor made it seem as if the terrorists called Boko Haram are fighting the cause of Nigerian Muslims, when he knows deep down that this evil group has not spared Muslims either. ”We have said it repeatedly: Boko Haram is a clear and present danger to Christians as it is to Muslims. Boko Haram is as dangerous to the rich as it is to the poor, it is as dangerous to the North as it is to the South. Simply put, Boko Haram is an enemy of Nigeria and all Nigerians, irrespective of their religion or ethnicity, must unite to defeat the terrorists,” it said. APC appealed to Nigerians of all creed and ethnicity to repudiate politicians or politicians in religious garb who may be seeking to divide them on primordial basis, especially as the general elections are fast approaching. |

While Ms. Whitman, who became chief executive in 2011, depicted the historic decision as a natural part of her five-year turnaround plan, she had previously resisted the idea of breaking up the company. HP was one of the world’s top buyers of semiconductors and other computer parts, she had argued, giving it pricing power superior to its rivals. Dividing in two, she said on Monday, “will provide each new company with the independence, focus, financial resources, and flexibility they need to adapt quickly to market and customer dynamics.” This will make HP more competitive, she said. Ms. Whitman will retain much power at both companies. She will be chief executive of Hewlett-Packard Enterprise and will serve as non-executive chairman of HP Inc. Patricia F. Russo, currently a director of HP, will be chairwoman of Hewlett-Packard Enterprise. Dion Weisler, now head of HP’s printing business, will be president and chief executive of HP Inc. The company also said its financial analysts’ meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, had been postponed. “HP’s board and management have made a brilliant value-enhancing move at the perfect time in the turnaround,” Ralph V. Whitworth, founder of Relational Investors and a former chairman of HP’s board, said in a statement on Monday. http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/10/07/business/hewlett-packard-announces-breakup-plan.html?referrer= |
Hewlett-Packard confirmed on Monday that it planned to break into two companies. The company, considered a foundational institution of Silicon Valley, said in a news releasethat it intended to divide itself into a company aimed at business technology, including computer servers and data storage equipment, software and services, and a company that sells personal computers and printers. Both companies will be publicly traded. The business-oriented company will be called Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, while the PC company will be called HP Inc. and will retain the company’s current logo. The transaction is expected to be completed by October 2015, the end of HP’s fiscal year, the company said. In a statement, Meg Whitman, HP’s chief executive, said the company was splitting up to “more aggressively go after the opportunities created by a rapidly changing market.”

If the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God Pastor, Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has his way, he will not want to live up to hundred years. The 72 year old preacher doesn’t mind living up to 90, but being hundred for him, ” is not necessary.” Pastor Adeboye gave his opinion on longevity last Sunday, while delivering the sermon at the 60thbirthday of the founder and president of Living Faith Church worldwide, a.k.a Winners Chapel, Bishop Oyedepo. ‘’When I marked 70 and people prayed that I would be up to 80, I said amen. When they said I would be up 90, I said well, amen. But when they said 100, I didn’t say amen. “I didn’t because I don’t know what offence I would have committed for God to keep me up to 100 in this sinful world when a crown of glory is awaiting me in heaven. ‘’I wouldn’t mind to be 92 though, so that I will be alive to preach when Bishop Oyedepo is 80. But to live up to 100, I don’t know about that,’’ Pastor Adeboye said, noting that every birthday is a reminder that ‘’our days are numbered.” http://endougs..com/2014/10/adeboye-i-dont-want-to-live-up-to-100.html |
This is surely good tidings for Chinedu Okoli, aka Flavour N'abania, and his girlfriend, Sandra Okagbue, are now proud parents as they were blessed with a bouncing baby girl on the 27th of September, 2014, in far away Houston, United States of America. The Ada Ada crooner and Sandra, a former Delta Soap Queen who once dated Super Eagles midfielder, Mikel Obi, are said to be over the moon with the arrival of the tiny pair of feet and have taken to the social media to tell all their friends of the coming of the baby. But what no one can say is if they are planning to tie the nuptial knots with the coming of the baby. We congratulate them by the way!

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, ( CAN) Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor has said he knew nothing about the controversial $9.3m smuggled into South Africa by two Nigerians and an Israeli, using his private jet. Oritsejafor broke his silence during the National Executive Council meeting of CAN on Monday at the National Christian Centre, Abuja. The CAN leader said there had been attempts in the media to link him with the incident by mischievous elements, adding that he had kept quiet all the while, because he needed to explain his position to the church which is his primary constituency. Oritsekafor, in his address declared that he was never a party to the movement of the $9.3m from Nigeria to South Africa to purchase arms and ammunition. “I want to assure you that I will not do anything to tarnish the image of Jesus Christ or compromise the divine standard of the church. “As you are all aware, the media has been awashed in the past few days about an unfortunate incident involving the movement of funds from Nigeria to South Africa. In the unfortunate news reports, attempts have been made to link me directly with the transaction. “So far I have refrained from making any direct public response pending the time that I would have brief the leaders if the church and explain my position on the issues to them. “I believe that the primary institution that I owe any explanation to is the church.” Oritsejafor added: “At the risk of being seen to be defending myself, I wish to confirm to the distinguished leaders of the church that the Bombardier Challenger 601 aircraft in question is mine. The aircraft was presented to me as a gift by members of our congregation and ministry partners worldwide at my 40th anniversary of my call into the ministry. “May I be permitted to stress that the aircraft was not given to me by the President of Nigeria, neither was it a settlement for any political favour or patronage. “With the benefit of hindsight, the President of the country was a guest in our church during the anniversary celebration when the jet was presented to me.” The CAN leader who explained that President Jonathan has nothing to do with the gift of the aircraft challenged those making the allegation t come out to show proof so that the matter can be put to rest once and for all. Oritsejafor who also explained the circumstances that led to the involvement of his aircraft, said “in order to ameliorate the cost of maintenance of the aircraft, I sought and got permit to allow the aircraft fly in and out of Nigeria.” “Based on this, I leased the aircraft on August 2, 2014 to a company to run it. It was the leasee that entered into an agreement with the people who carried out the transfer of funds. Having leased the aircraft to the Green Coast Produce Company Limited, any transaction undertaken with the aircraft can no longer be attached to me. “Inasmuch as I am shocked and distressed by the incident, I wish to appeal to Christians in Nigeria to remember that a war has been waged against the Nigerian church. This war is being fought on many fronts and this unfortunate incident is another dimension in the assault against the church. “It is clear that those who manipulated this conspiracy desire to create a schism in the church.” According to him, “the media hype and the deliberate distortion of information that followed it confirmed that forces that desperately desire to cause division and disunity in the church are at work. Even the devil knows that a house that is divided cannot stand. “As Christians, we need unity in the church now more than ever. We are witnessing inhuman attacks by religious extremists against Christians in the northern part of the country, while christian infrastructure is being destroyed in hundreds. “If we permit the enemy divide us, our chances of corporate survival shall be severely threatened. “Distinguished leaders of the church, please permit me to state clearly before God and before all of you here present today, that I am not a party to the movement of $9.3m from Nigeria to South Africa to purchase arms and ammunition. I am not part of the deal. I know nothing about it.” The CAN President commended the Catholic Church for its support, particularly in refuting a distorted news item by mischievous elements in the media. He appealed to heads of blocks that constitute CAN and head of denominations and Christian leaders at different levels and spheres of influence to use their good offices to caution and control their subordinates and followers from making public statements that will further polarise the church and strengthen the arms of the enemies of the church. Quoting Matthew Chapter 18 verses 15 to 20, Oritsejafor said, “If I offend you or you offend me, instead of talking to media, let us talk to each other within the house of God.” http://thenationonlineng.net/new/i-am-not-party-to-9-3m-deal-oritsejafor/ |
The founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), T.B. Joshua, has refuted allegations made by a South African journalist, Jacques Pauw, who said he performs fake miracles. Recently, T.B. Joshua’s Synagogue Church collapsed killing at least 115 people. Thus the prophet has come under severe criticisms. According to Mr. Pauw’s report, he challenged the pilgrims to provide him with medical proof that the people had been actually healed. He further stated that nobody was cured. In a statement released through the church’s official Facebook page, Joshua claimed that all his miracles were performed before the church audience and were broadcast live through the SCOAN’s Emmanuel TV. “Please note, all of The SCOAN services are public and broadcast live on Emmanuel TV,”the statement read in part. The popular televangelist was reacting to a media report concerning the authenticity of miracles performed by the pastor. However, Joshua claimed that the media report was false. According to him, the names of the people who alleged that the pastor performed fake miraclesare fabricated. “The writer(s) fabricated names of people who do not exist and remained nameless and faceless in order to hide their evil intentions. They need to be investigated. “It is our belief that these stories were intended to divert people’s attention from the evil that has been done,”Joshua said. Expressing his displeasure over the report, he urged security operatives to investigate those behind the report. “Those involved in these stories need to be investigated concerning the building collapse. If they are not directly involved, they will help the investigation. “If they are not the ones who did it, they know those who did. Perhaps, they were involved in the building collapse because they claim what is happening in The SCOAN is fake. They are suspect,”the SCOAN founder said. The statement also urged the Synagogue church adherents and supporters not to be misled by the said report. “Do not be misled and diverted from the truth. No matter how long a lie is sustained, the truth will someday prevail. Jesus is the Truth,”the statement urged. http://endougs..com/2014/09/scoans-miracles-arent-fake-tb-joshua.html |
