Business / Huawei Now Into Pig Farming Over Low Smartphone Sales by EndyEdesonNews(m): 2:34am On Feb 21, 2021
Huawei is turning to technology for pig farmers as it deals with tough sanctions on its smartphones. The Chinese telecoms giant was stopped from accessing vital components after the Trump administration labelled it a threat to US national security.
In response to struggling smartphone sales, Huawei is looking at other sources of revenue for its technology.

Along with Artificial Intelligence (AI) tech for pig farmers, Huawei is also working with the coal mining industry.

Former US President Donald Trump claimed Huawei can share customer data with the Chinese government, allegations it has repeatedly denied.

As a result, the world's largest telecoms equipment maker has been limited to making 4G models as it lacks US government permission to import components for 5G models.

Huawei's smartphone sales plunged 42% in the last quarter of 2020 as it struggled with a limited supply of microchips due to the sanctions.

Huawei has also been locked out of the development of 5G in a number of countries, including the UK, amid fears over national security.

Business / Uber Drivers Are Now Workers Rather Than Self-Employed by EndyEdesonNews(m): 2:11am On Feb 21, 2021
The decision could mean thousands of Uber drivers are entitled to minimum wage and holiday pay. The ruling could leave the ride-hailing app facing a hefty compensation bill, and have wider consequences for the gig economy.
Uber said the ruling centred on a small number of drivers and it had since made changes to its business.

In a long-running legal battle, Uber had finally appealed to the Supreme Court after losing three earlier rounds.

Uber's share price dipped as US trading began on Friday as investors grappled with what impact the London ruling could have on the firm's business model.

It is being challenged by its drivers in multiple countries over whether they should be classed as workers or self-employed.

What's the background to the ruling?

Former Uber drivers James Farrar and Yaseen Aslam took Uber to an employment tribunal in 2016, arguing they worked for Uber. Uber said its drivers were self employed and it therefore was not responsible for paying any minimum wage nor holiday pay.

Science/Technology / 30% Of Cars In Nigeria Will Be Electric Cars By The Year 2025 by EndyEdesonNews(m): 6:01pm On Feb 06, 2021
The Federal Government is targeting that at least 30 percent of passenger vehicles in Nigeria will be electric cars by 2025.
Speaking at the unveiling of Nigeria’s first locally assembled electric car, Hyundai Kona, in Abuja on Friday, the Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Jelani Aliyu, said the electric cars have come to stay.

Aliyu said Nigeria would not be left out in the transition from fuel-powered vehicles to electric cars.

Aliyu said the Federal Government has invested about $1 billion in the auto industry in Nigeria as at 2019.

The NADDC boss said the Stallion Group, which led the innovation in electric cars in Nigeria, has invested about $300 million in Nigeria.

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo, said electric cars would lead to reduction in fuel consumption and environmental degradation.

He said the Trade Ministry has been working with NADDC to review the automotive policy to further strengthen the automotive industry in Nigeria.

He encouraged automotive plants to invest in developing electric vehicles in Nigeria.

Science/Technology / Jeff Bezos To Resign As CEO Of Amazon by EndyEdesonNews(m): 10:53am On Feb 06, 2021
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is to step down as chief executive of the e-commerce giant that he founded in his garage nearly 30 years ago.

He will become executive chairman, a move he said would give him "time and energy" to focus on his other ventures.

Mr Bezos, the world's richest man, will be replaced by Andy Jassy, who currently leads Amazon's cloud computing business.

The change will take place in the second half of 2021, the company said.

"As Exec Chair I will stay engaged in important Amazon initiatives but also have the time and energy I need to focus on the Day 1 Fund, the Bezos Earth Fund, Blue Origin, The Washington Post, and my other passions," he said in an letter to Amazon staff on Tuesday,

"I've never had more energy, and this isn't about retiring. I'm super passionate about the impact I think these organizations can have."

Science/Technology / World's First Airport For Flying Cars To Start Operation This Year by EndyEdesonNews(m): 2:09pm On Jan 31, 2021
The world's first fully-operational airport for flying taxis is due to launch in Coventry later this year, as companies gear up for tests of the vehicles

Urban Air Port has received government funding to build the hub for air taxis and autonomous delivery drones in the city, which passengers will be able to use in a similar way to airports for planes and which will also charge and maintain the electric vehicles.

Urban-Air Port was selected by a government programme aimed at developing zero-emission flying and new air vehicles, winning a 1.2-million-pound ($1.65-million) grant to help fund the installation of the airport in Coventry city centre.

It said it chose Coventry for the first site given its location in the heart of the UK, meaning there is easy access to most parts of the country within four hours.

The airport will be able to support any electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, and will also be built so it is easy to move to alternative sites.

Education / Ebonyi University Lecturer Dies While Doing Taxify Services by EndyEdesonNews(m): 11:04am On Jan 15, 2021
It was a very sad day for the Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ebonyi State as the news of the death of a lecturer engulfed the university community. Mr. Kyrian Nwoke was a lecturer in the department of Physiology of the institution. As a devoted family man whose wife gave birth few months ago, Mr. Kyrian, whose salaries and allowances have been withheld by the federal government of Nigeria for over four months had to enlist his vehicle on Taxified Services. This was as a coping strategy for him to fend for his family in the face of the avoidable punishment from the government to the federal university lecturers. On Sunday, 10th January, 2020, he got a call to pick some people (passengers) from Udemezue Street and drop at Native Delicacies, one of the most popular eateries in Abakaliki located at Ogoja Road of the same town. Kyrian hurriedly and joyfully left for the services which he believed would provide the day's meal for his young family.

From then, the family could not hear from him until the following day when his dead body was discovered along the same Ogoja Road.

We pray that God grant him eternal rest and give the family the grace to bear this great loss. We plead the necessary bodies to bring the perpetrators to book.
We also pray the federal government to at least pay his family his withheld salaries and allowances to plan his funeral.

Sports / Super Eagles Player, Paul Onuachu Gifts Electricity To His Community In Imo by EndyEdesonNews(m): 11:01am On Jan 03, 2021
“Bro, guess what… I have lived to see the first time electric light showed in our village…as I am talking to you now, the joy and celebration is massive in the entire village as NEPA brought light few seconds ago… football has given us light through Onuachu”

This was an excerpt from a telephone conversation between two excited brothers whose community got electrified for the first time in history by Mr. Paul Onuachu. Onuachu is a 26 years old Imo State-born football player. He hails from Umuota Agbaghara Nsu, a village in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of the state. Currently, Onuachu plays for both the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Genk FC of Belgium. As at the time of writing this article, he holds the record of scoring the top fastest goal in Nigeria’s international football history and the fourth fastest goal in the history of international football in the world, when he scored within 9 seconds of Nigeria’s clash with Egypt on the 26th of March, 2019. This sole goal of his that gave the Super Eagles of Nigeria victory over Muhammed Salah’s Pharaohs of Egypt broke the record of Nigeria’s inability to win Egypt for a long time of about thirty years. Furthermore, as at the time of writing this article, he tops Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and other footballers as the highest goal scorers in the 2020/21 football season in the Europe’s top leagues.

Onuachu, in August, 2019 decided to make an epochal move that changed the face and fortunes of his community. Like Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal, Sadio Mane of Senegal, Marcus Rashford of England, Ahmed Musa of Nigeria, Didier Drogba of Cote d’Ivoire, George Weah of Liberia, Nwankwo Kanu of Nigeria, and other professional footballers who are involved in community and social works in different parts of the world, Onuachu directed the community leaders of Umuota Agbaghara Nsu to forward him the cost of electrifying the community. Within days of this call, crop of electrical engineers were shipped in as work commenced earnestly until the Covid-19 pandemic cause a total lockdown. With the relaxation of the Lockdown, work was completed such that by Tuesday, December 22, 2020, the village was agog when electric light was seen for the first time in the history of the community. Thanks to the young philanthropic footballer, Paul Onuachu.
