Internal party discrepancies in Nigeria's political history is not a new occurrence. In the 1950's just before independence, a regional political party of the Western Assembly was engulfed in serious party conflict that saw the Action Group breaking into components of factions. Most of the time, intra party conflicts are hinges on lack of internal democracy in political parties and a decline in efficiency of governance cohesion. In this situation, certain organs of political parties are been compromised by money bags who in turn hijack the party and it ideals; thereby making ir difficult to adopt an open system which allow party members to participate in decision-making and unhindered opportunity to contest in elections within and outside the party using the party’s platform. Such restraint has increasingly resulted into crisis, party wrangling, political apathy, decamping, war of attrition, hostility, accusation, grievances and anti-party activities. It is against this background that i wish to state in this article that the Peoples Democratic Party is not in any way free from party conflict especially the one currently rocking the soul of the party. Since inception, certain party Cabals who contributed resources to the formation of the PDP feels they owned the party, hence their endless rascality and gangsterism in the system. The cabals commands so much respects and powers and always wanted their whims and caprices to be the order of the party. Because of their tight grips on the party, their was palpable frustration, disorderliness, blackmail, indiscipline, dis-unity and acrimony. The implication of the PDP past misdeed is the reason the party is still in turmoil till this day. Although it can be stated in clear terms that the real war of attrition in the party emerged immediately after the cabals imposed Umaru Yaruadua as it presidential candidate. Things begin to go sour when the cabals sees the clear handwriting in the walls that its not going to be business as usual. It is on record that immediately the duo of Yaruadua and Goodluck came on board, they ensures that these cabals are silenced and placed in the best position they belong. They were strip of the enormous power they wield in the party. In the milieu of these face-off, the cabals fired a deadly salvo from their enclave all their bids to still remain relevant in party affairs. After the sudden demise of Yaruadua, certain microcosm of same cabals within the Yaruaduas', kept vice president Jonathan at abeyance. Again the party cabals arose to the occasion to ensure the doctrine of necessity was followed. In my thoughts, they cabals are pursuing an agenda not a patriotism course. But as usual, the man GEJ kept them at arms-lenght and became even more merciless to the cabals. There was a total relegation of the cabals to the background and this to my mind was the last straw that breaks the camel's back. In fighting back, thesame cabals begins a destructive criticism and hate speech that now incite party faithfuls against GEJ. This led to massive cross-carpeting and some of the cabals, publicly tearing their membership cards. At the end, the cabals achieved it aims and today, the rest is history. THE WAY FORWARD The PDP as a matter of urgency must unite quickly and purge itself of the present wrangling. The unity of the PDP is highly need especially at this critical point of our national life otherwise, democratic institutions built for over sixteen years stands the risk of been destroyed completely by the rudderless APC. There is need for urgent reforms in the following areas: ZONING AND INTERNAL DEMOCRACY The zoning arrangement in the party should be modified. There should be a shift from the old older of recognizing only major ethnic groups as against the minority. The minority ethnic group should and must be put into full consideration in the zoning arrangement. In fact, the status of zoning should reflect all the six geo_political zones of the country where the minority zones are allowed to vie and contest for elections into any political position. The party cannot be talking of reform and still be indulged in rascality or imposing candidates. All party members should be given considerations in decision-making proces of the party. The party should internalize democracy into it fold so as to checkmate cross-carpeting and political normadism. It is apparent that some decampees may not be anything more than political flirts, the belief is that a majority of cross-carpeting is rooted firmly in reaction to how party faithfuls were been treated. Cases abound of questionable substitution, disqualification and reversal of nomination of previously screened and cleared candidates by an interplay of party intrigues, power display, culture of impunity and disregard for fair play and internal democracy. Therefore, the PDP must work assiduously to enthrone internal democracy into all organs of the party. RECONCILIATION At this juncture, the warring factions of the party must unite as a force and shield their swords. Alhaji Alimodu Sherif and Mr. Makarfi should return to the negotiation table. Sherif camp should not be perceived as enemy, rather be viewed from the perspectives of the collective challenges that has lived with the PDP which they failed to address over the years. Imposing candidates which incidentally Sherif became it beneficiary. Is it the crass impunity and indicipilpline to mention but a few. It will be right to state here that the PDP is paying dearly for it past sins of imposing candidates. The reconciliation process should be continues and the Sherif's camp be persuaded and schooled on the need to mapping out a workable resolutions that will return the party to the path of peace and prosperity. I will also advised that that the Sherif's camp be accommodated into the highest decision-making organ of the party. This must be only if the Sherif's camp have not been hijacked by the APC as been speculated by political watchers. By so doing, the Sherif's camp will feel some sense of belongings under the umbrella again. SANITY AND PARTY DISCIPLINE To ensure the smoothness of party affairs, sanity must return to the party. Sitting govnors should let go of their grips on party structure and allow the party to guide their programmes and ideologies for the electorate. If need be for amendment of party constitution, it should be altered as soon as possible and in line with party ideals. The constitution of the party must be respected by all members whilst party constitution is placed above individual's interests. Party faithfuls must and should be law-abiding. Long live the PDP! A Muslim sheikh jailed in Egypt for 18 months has declared from his prison cell that he is under arrest for “insulting Islam” by becoming a Christian. Egypt’s secret police transferred Bahaa el-Din Ahmed Hussein el-Akkad, 57, to the Wadi el-Natroun Prison last month. He was told he would remain there indefinitely unless he agreed to work as a government informer against other converts to Christianity. According to the prisoner’s Cairo attorney, Athanasius William, his client remains incarcerated in this desert prison “only because he has chosen a different belief, to be a Christian.” El-Akkad was imprisoned without charges for more than a year after officials of the State Security Investigation (SSI) arrested him in Cairo on April 6, 2005. Although subjected to repeated interrogations, the former Muslim was never told the specific accusations against him. But several of his cellmates spread rumors that he was converting and baptizing people into Christianity, sparking verbal abuse and at least one severe beating from a fellow prisoner. When the courts finally ordered El- Akkad’s release from provisional detention 10 weeks ago, SSI authorities deliberately ignored the ruling. Instead, they held him in their Gaber Ibn Hayyan office in Giza and then transferred him to the Wadi el-Natroun Prison, located 60 miles north of Cairo along the highway to Alexandria. William told Compass it was strictly illegal for the SSI to have re-arrested El- Akkad and jailed him indefinitely “without the orders of a legally authorized official,” as required under Article 280 of the Egyptian penalty laws. Disillusioned with Islam In a series of handwritten notes smuggled out of prison in recent months and obtained by Compass, El- Akkad declared that he had “chosen the Christian faith” after years of research on Islam. For more than 20 years, the former sheikh was a member of the fundamentalist Islamic group Tabligh and Da’wa, which actively proselytized non-Muslims but strictly opposed violence. He also led a mosque community in Al-Haram, in the Giza area adjacent to Cairo. In 1994 he had published, Islam: the Religion, a 500- page book reviewing the traditional beliefs of the Islamic faith. But he became disillusioned, and five years ago the sheikh said he began to pray that he could somehow know God personally. It was not until January 2005 that he talked for the first time with someone who explained the tenets of the Christian faith to him. He began intensive study of Christian Scripture, and within weeks he became a follower of “This is a proof to all Muslims,” El-Akkad wrote, “that the person who studies the two religions from an objective and serious perspective will choose the Christian approach.” But within two months, word of El- Akkad’s conversion to Christianity had reached the SSI, and secret police picked him up without warning from his private trade office. Family Waits in Vain After six weeks in SSI detention, El-Akkad was sent to Cairo’s Tora Mazraa Prison. When his lawyer, William, finally obtained power of attorney to visit the convert, he was told he was incarcerated under emergency law provisions on suspicion of “committing blasphemy against Islam.” For the following year, El-Akkad’s detention was renewed every 45 days under emergency law provisions, even though he still had not been formally charged. But this past July, authorities instituted a new law restricting provisional detention regulations, specifying that the length of provisional detention for a misdemeanor should not, “whatever the circumstances,” exceed six months. El-Akkad was accused of “insulting a heavenly religion,” a misdemeanor under Article 98-F of the Egyptian penal code. So a Cairo court ordered him released on July 30. After learning of the court-ordered release, El-Akkad’s wife and three children waited in vain for him to return home. Ten days later, William finally confirmed that although the convert had been released from prison, he remained in SSI custody in Giza. Desert Prison By mid-September, authorities transferred El-Akkad to the maximum security Wadi el-Natroun Prison, where the majority of Egyptian Islamists sentenced for anti-government activities are incarcerated. Notorious for its Spartan conditions in the desert, the prison facility houses its prisoners in small cells measuring one by two meters. According to William, his client is in weak health from prison, suffering from high blood pressure as well as skin diseases caused by extreme temperatures, unsanitary cell conditions and bites from insects and small reptiles “He is locked in a place where he may die because his age, body and mind cannot tolerate this cruelty and stubbornness of the state security authorities,” William said. The attorney has received no response from a petition he filed to Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud on September 4 citing serious legal violations in El-Akkad’s case. Although Egypt’s Christian citizens are free to embrace Islam and obtain legal Muslim identities, Muslim citizens are not allowed to change their religious identity. Those who become Christians are subjected to severe harassment by the SSI, which often arrests converts for either insulting Islam or “threatening national security.” Source : http://africanfreepress.com/imam-jailed-for-18-months-for-declaring-jesus-is-lord-and-rejecting-islam/#.WBR-_hzTXFk Lalasticlala, Mynd44

The real reasons why the former Plateau state governor, Senator Joshua Chibi Dariye recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress, (APC), was to avoid jail term as a result of graft proceedings against him by the government. Close sources to the ex-governor in Abuja, said that the Senator representing Plateau Central at the Senate has been put under intense pressure by top echelons of the ruling APC to defect his party of over seventeen years and get a ‘waiver’ and reprieve from the numerous cases against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC). Aljazirahnews reports that Senator Dariye is facing trial over alleged misappropriation of over N12 billion state funds while he was the chief executive of Plateau state between 1999 and 2007. His case has refused to go off the public space since his debatable let-off under the ex President Olusegun Obasanjo administration when he escaped impeachment for same allegations. Aljazirahnews learnt that the leadership of the ruling APC having realized that the incumbent governor, Simon Bako Lalong was Dariye’s political stooge as speaker for the same eight years Dariye served as governor, decided to explore the political strategy to court him back to Lalong’s side to beef up the hold of the party in the state. It was not clear as at press time to ascertain which of the APC faction (El-Rufai or Tinubu) led the political deal that eventual brought Dariye on board but an highly placed source confirmed that the EFCC trial was used as bait.
