Education › Re: Man Laments As Engineering Professors Fail To Fix Faulty Generator In His Dept by ENGINER(m): 10:54pm On Jul 02, 2025 |
I’ve experienced both sides—I was trained as a technician, with hands-on experience repairing mechanical machines: replacing parts, troubleshooting, and fixing faults. I also hold a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) degree, which means I understand the theory, design, and simulations behind machines like generators.
But even with that, I can confidently say: Repairing a generator is a skill that comes from real, practical training—not academic theory.
🔧 Technician
Works directly on machines: repairs, replaces parts, and tests functionality
Trained practically, often through apprenticeships or workshops
Gains skill from working on real machines over time
🛠️ I’ve done this myself—fixing machines on the field. And the truth is: you don’t need to study engineering to repair a generator. You need practical training and consistent exposure.
🧰 Technologist
Combines engineering theory with practical work
Interprets designs, supervises installation, ensures implementation is accurate
Acts as a bridge between engineers and technicians
🧠 Engineer
Designs machines using calculations, software, and theory
Specializes in areas like mechanical, electrical, thermal, or production
May understand how a generator works, but may not know how to physically repair one unless trained practically
🎓 Even Engineers Need Real-World Training
After graduating with a B.Eng, engineers still need graduate trainee programs to be trained in a specific industry. Why? Because university teaches how to design, not necessarily how to build or repair.
🧑⚖️💉 Think About Other Professions
You don’t expect a medical professor to perform surgery just because they teach anatomy. You don’t expect a law professor to walk into a courtroom and win a case unless they’ve practiced law.
It’s the same here. An engineering professor can teach how a generator works, simulate its performance, and explain its design— But repairing it? That’s the job of a trained technician.
✅ Final Word
To repair a generator, you don’t need an engineering degree. You need:
Hands-on training
Experience with real machines
The ability to diagnose faults practically
As someone who is both a technician and an engineering graduate, I understand the difference clearly. Designing, supervising, and repairing are three separate skillsets—and each deserves respect. |

nkay2020: Good morning fellow NL, I have been an active member but this is my first post. Please I crave your indulgence, I saw how you helped the other man get his money. Please I humbly need same help too. The subject matter refers. This young man with so many alias was meant to be a friend from May 2018 to exactly March 2019. Aug/Sep 2018 I entrusted Paolo with the sum of N50,000 to get me a used laptop from Lagos. He refused giving me back my money and had blocked me everywhere. Please nairaland family call Paolo on 08144297867 to return my money. I have tried and exhausted all avenues to reach to him amicably. if you send it through bank, tell your bank, they will block his account |
