The rules are simple

Uber, like most online pay-for-hire transport system, is SUPPOSED to be Safe!

I said "supposed to" because in Nigeria, nothing is "supposed to be as it ought to be".

In brief, to be an Uber Driver, Uber is supposed to "vet" you, your documents and hold enough data on you such that you are traceable and have no criminal background. Uber should also have access to your bank Account which is where the money (Taxi fare) is paid into.
Uber debits the customer account, takes its own share and then credit the Uber-driver's account with the remainder

How much, how deep and how religiously Uber in Nigeria does this, is another kettle of fish.


In like vein, an Uber passengers are supposed to be also vetted.
Uber is supposed to have the details of the customer account and other Bio-data of such Customer.

With the above scenario, both the Uber Driver and Uber customer are SUPPOSED to be known entities such that if a crime happens, either of them can be traced and arrested.

But this is Nigeria where things are done shoddily, where Senators can forge certificates and get away with it, where forensic analysis by the Police is like the second coming of Cheesux, where Police will take bribes to look the other way and Court Justice will take "gift" to pervert justice. Not to mention Law-makers blackmailing the populace to have their way and continue to fester corruption.
Or do you want me to add "where the registration details of a vehicle suddenly disappears on LMVD Registration Server, just because the vehicle owner is well-connected and a Man of gawd"

So, if you ask me: How safe is Uber or any other taxi service?
I would say "Thread with caution, as you would with any other Taxi service you pick up along the road side.
Dont "chat yourself into trouble" as they try to get information from you along the journey.

If anyone thinks the fuel in the vehicle of that Uber taxi (in this story) suddenly finished at the same location where "boyz were waiting to pounce", that person needs to carry a sign on him/her saying l have One Million Naira in my bag ..... while standing in the middle of orile Bridge at 9pm.

BTW: I think Uber has (must have) an insurance policy in place which reimburses the passenger, in situations like this otherwise, as happened in foreign countries, you can sue Uber for providing an "unsafe service" to you.

Well, that doesn't affect riders. I'm more interested in riders' safety.

One of the main selling points of uber is safety/credibility. If this is eroded, then the usual Nigerian factor would creep in, and that would be the beginning of the end.
