NYSC LAGOS STATE MANAGEMENT SPEAKS ON THE TRAIN ACCIDENT THAT LED TO CORPS MEMBER, ODILI NNEKA’S DEATH The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Lagos State Management’s attention has been drawn to news making the rounds on the train accident that led to corps member, Odili Nneka Deborah’s (LA/17B/1169) death on 8th March, 2018 The State Co-ordinator of NYSC Lagos State, Prince Mohammed Momoh and management therefore wish to correct the news in the public domain which stated that Odili Nneka (LA/17B/1169) committed suicide by walking into a moving train, while another dimension to the story had it that the earphones or earpiece she had on prevented her from hearing the sound of the train that was in motion. We wish to inform the general public that the deceased corps member’s phone was found intact, without any earphone or earpiece in the handbag that was with her when the accident happened, Secondly, her facebook page indicated that at 1:42am on 8th March 2018, same day accident happened, Inneka had uploaded 36 pictures and 2 videos of herself which she tagged “Happy Mood”. It is therefore mischievous and misleading to say that she committed suicide by deliberately walking into a moving train and that she could have avoided the accident if she had no earphones on. It is worth mentioning thE corps member was a very active volley ball player, whose prowess and dexterity in the game of volley ball stood her out amongst her teammates during the inter platoon volley ball competitions at the 2017 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 Orientation Course. Nneka’s leadership qualities, warmth and humility also endeared her to those who came across her. While on her hospital bed, and stable but with severe pains, Nneka was still able to acknowledge NYSC Ikeja Local Government Officials for their promptness to the accident scene and for immediately conveying her to LASUTH, the NYSC State Co-ordinator for quickly providing funds for blood transfusion, and other medical needs, the Chairman Ikeja Local Government, Hon. Balogun for sending the local government nurse with some money for her medicare and the CMD LASUTH Prof. Oke and his medical team for giving her the best medical treatment. She summed it all up in her words to Mrs. Esan Modupe, NYSC LGI Ikeja 2 shortly before she died “Help me thank everybody that saved me and did not allow me die”. She was buried at Ndoni, Rivers State on Saturday 10th March, 2018 Her death left the NYSC Lagos State in deep shock. On behalf of the NYSC Director General, Brig. Gen, S.Z. Kazuare, the State Co-ordinator, Management and Staff and the entire corps members of NYSC Lagos State , we commiserate with the family of our fallen Hero, Odili Inneka Deborah. We pray that God Almighty rest her in perfect peace and grant the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. SIGNED Management

The main truth and of course the only truth is that it's vice versa. The same way a lady can turn unappreciative is the same way a man can. My opinion about this is simple! While investing on the love of your life, invest on yourself too to be loveable. Investment on oneself in this case might even connect one to other ladies or guys hence, expanding your choices of man or woman. OK bye. |
MhizzAJ:Please, can someone tell this lady that there's joy and fulfillment in spontaneity and surprises? |
mamachildren:Look no further! This is the best advice. It will work, have always worked excepting if she's been used as a thorn in the flesh, an agent of torture. That, too, I believe can be surmounted given the prevailing and efficacious powers of prayers. Show her more love. Moreso, women are generally assumed and believed to be effeminate and soft-hearted. Any act of love and care towards her can't be quickly forgotten. You have been advised. |

Pathetic! Am an acute pessimist about this country. Saddening! |
It's difficult to love this stinking hell called Nigeria. How can you explain waking up early, getting two little children ready, beating fuel-queue-induced-traffic, getting to the airport one hour before take off time and being rudely told you can't be on the Arik air flight you paid for a week earlier. No explanations offered. No apologies rendered. No alternatives recommended. Absolutely nothing. Like you're some beggar begging for alms. You create a scene and then they engage their lazy brains to find alternatives which aren't suitable. They spend hours making senseless calls and when they get off the phone they tell you they will put you on a flight to Port Harcourt, then get you to Calabar by road. Port Hartcourt to calabar is at least 4 hours by road. Then factor in the bad road and attendant risks. You reject the offer because if you had wanted to travel by road, you know exactly where AKTC terminal is located. You spot a passenger holding an Arikair ticket for a calabar bound flight taking off at 1:30pm; one hour after your scheduled time. Then you realize you have been played. The flight was overbooked! You create more scene. Then they take your flight details and tell you to come back tomorrow with no guarantee that you would be on tomorrow's flight. Then it finally dawns on you that no amount of screaming will get you on that flight. You're hopeless and helpless. Then you burst into tears and cry like a baby. You report your predicament to FAAN officials and all they can offer is a feeble apology. You insist you want your complaint documented. After a few minutes search, they tell you complaints forms are exhausted.. at that moment you finally give up on this country. This country that stifles all your attempts at personal greatness. This is one of the reasons why in 2017 Nigerian youths would rather die in the deserts and the high seas or choose to become slaves in Libya than come back to this crappy country. |
Contd its for these reasons and many others that, government should make sure the issue of social security for beggars and the less-privileged be taken seriously - this, undoubtedly, will curtail the activities of those hiding under the cover of beggary to perpetrate terror - subsequently, making sure that any threat emanating from the angle is periodically checked and the harbingers evacuated. Those who are due for punishment should not be spared and parents who sit out at home waiting for alms their children bring should be made to face the stern face of the law( ‘E rójú olè e ò mu, omo yin ò se àgbàfò, ó ń kaso wálé.’ Simply interpreted as ‘who else is a thief, your ward brings home cloth without being a washerman’).Religious organizations should be sensitized on the need to discourage worshipers on being beggars when they can work. The public should be served with the fact that the safety and sanity of any society transcend the survival of any individual. This issue must be addressed now, before it becomes untamed, because these beggars are already striking. |
aid in garnering intelligence during the day before they launch an onslaught in the dark. Apart from these mind-wriggling revelations, apparently, people who engage in beggary in order to survive have continued to constitute despicable nuisances to the sanity of the society. Children of school-age or who should be in school are loosed under the watch of their parents to engage in petty stealing and beggary activities in motor parks or various places where they can ride roughshod on people's emotional incapability. It’s annoying that these days, beggars are no longer gentle on people when begging for alms, they either stifle peace out of them by deliberately goading them with plea to part with what they don’t want to part with or forcefully taking it away from them. These beggars also lurk around ATM points, Bank entrances to play their commiserative ruse on unsuspecting persons. We all should be alerted that this will become a menace soonest, when these piteous stories are no longer salable to the public that small scale robberies will become the trend and translate into what might not be easily contained. An allusion on point was a boy who was burnt alive sometime ago in Lagos, whose picture went viral on the internet, rousing people’s curiosity in the process on why a punitive measure like death could be meted on a child on an offence bordering on Garri-theft. The popular voices were already instigating vehement emotional actions before the truth about the issue slipped out and the case died a natural death. This boy, age twelve at most, and his gang, had already become terror to their community, perpetrating criminal activities like picking pockets, maiming their victims and carting away their valuables. A case of a person, who was stabbed and left hanging between life and death, was instantly stated. Although, employing jungle justice is not excusable under the law, not even on a boy who only needs corrective measures to becoming a better person, it paints the horrible picture of how criminal, beggary could go. It all started simply as innocently begging, before it became a lucrative avenue to raking in money and when beggary is no longer reaping satisfactorily, it graduated to stealing and maiming, putting a community into a jeopardy that is suppose to be preventable. Its pertinent to point out that Most times, laziness plus hunger, breeds beggary, and beggary, desperation, and desperation, crime in the long run. Though sarcastic, but factual that many who are into begging are much richer than those they seek alms from. They live affluently, holding tenaciously to religious tenets and societal weaknesses to cheating people who could barely have their daily bread. Although, Some of these beggars are as handicapped financially as they are physically, living on what is thrown at them as alms, and also trapped in a system fraught with discrimination and neglect, without any social security to rely on, it's not enough to endanger a lot of people, whose fundamental human rights should not be tampered with. its for these reasons and many others that, government should make sure the issue of social security for beggars and the less-privileged be taken seriously - this, undoubtedly, will curtail the activities of those hiding under the cover of beggary to perpetrate terror - subsequently, making sure that any threat emanating from the angle is periodically checked and the harbingers evacuated. THESE BEGGARS ARE ALREADY STRIKING! - By Henry Osinimu Tawose ‘. . . Their presence is harmful to the prestige of our country; they are a running sore which should be kept hidden, at any rate in the Capital. This year the number of tourists has fallen considerably, in comparison with last year’s figures, and it’s almost certain that these beggars are to some extent responsible. We really can’t let them invade our cities and form a threat to public hygiene and the national economy.’ The above is an excerpt from Aminata Sow Fall’s ‘Beggars’ Strike’, credited to a not too bright Mon Ndiaye, a government Inspector, whose instruction to his very intelligent subordinate, Keba Dabo was to get rid of beggars in the country. The instruction came as a result of the unsightly scenes beggars in the city of Senegal had carved out to ply their daily beggaries which culminated in to delivering a retrogressive blow to the country’s economic good fortune. It was a loathsome activity the Inspector was ready to rid off the cities which he invariably achieved, in order to save the country’s fast dwindling economy. Although, he later paid for the repercussion with his personal ambition, this discourse will not be hemmed on that. In a sharp contrast from the situation as painted by Aminata Sow Fall in Senegal, beggary activities littering the cities of Nigeria have not in any way plunged Nigeria’s economy into a stinging misfortune - at least, not in any way that would rouse the government’s attention - neither has it dubiously plagued the Nation’s treasury, instead, at a point, the government tried to legalize the activity by proposing a taxing system on it (That is a discussion for another day). While the government have continued with their activities unhindered given its well-oiled and crime-suppressing security apparatuses, the common man have not found it easy scavenging for his daily bread in the presence of some of these beggars. Beggars whose looks exude pity, hunger and haggardness during the day, but by night, living above darkness, yanking off arms, carving out sexual organs and, ripping heads off human flesh and shredding such for consumption, nefarious rituals and mercantile activities – all, for ‘spiritual fortification’ and sudden wealth. A pauper during the day, a Night-King, beggars! While the less-privileged and beggars are part of our existence and should at least be shown a modicum of pity, it's disheartening that people are deprived of their precious acquisitions, sanity, and even life by these beggars in the same society where they are supposed to be helpless or presumed to be so. People going by their daily activities are jolted to unpleasantness in the morning by nauseating injuries, gory sights by beggars exhibiting their disabilities to attract people’s mercy – while this might not be their making, these are making life uncomfortable for people who owe them at least nothing – and people making a return in the night after the day’s work are waylaid, coerced and maimed into losing ‘all.’ Most recently, security personnel smoked out and arrested some people perpetrating heinous activities underground somewhere in Ijaye, in Lagos State. Not too long ago when a similar swoop was carried out in Sooka in Ibadan where scores of people were discovered to be under chains and hundreds whose carcasses littered the godforsaken and dingy underground. The excavations in Sooka and the revelations therein have left too many questions still begging for answers. Many whose relatives have been declared missing for long immediately had their minds turned there if there could be an eruption of a sudden miracle. These were all kidnapped by people who were thought to be frail, abnormal or even stricken by poverty by day but who weren’t anything near that by night. Without vain thoughts, it could only be applicatory to think that these people are not only armed with life-denying weapons but also sophisticated technologies too, which a |

peeps4u:Recently, Kaduna State Governor was quoted saying about 21,780 out of 33,000 Kaduna State teachers failed primary four test conducted by the state government to know the ability of the teachers. Questions were drawn from different areas with only that of religious knowledge teachers set focusing ontheir subjects. To be fair to both the governor and primary school teachers, I decided to keep mute until I lay my hands on the scoresheet of the competency test, which I was privileged to get last week. While going through the scoresheet, I discovered that, unlike 33,000 teachers mentioned by the governor, 34,197 (4,940 Arabic/IRK, 1,638 CRK and 27,629 other subjects) teachers actually wrote the competency test (Table 2). As howled by many, the cut-off mark set by the Governor as pass mark did not comply with West African Standard Grading System where acceptable Credit mark starts from 50% not 75% as used by the governor (Table 1). If we take this standard grading system as the ideal situation, from the scoresheet, it can be deduced that; of the 34,197 teachers, 31,102 (91%) passed while only 3,095 (9%) failed the competency test. However, if we decide to stick to the governors cut-off mark, going by the categorization in the summary from the attached scoresheet, it can be deduced that 17,473 (51%) of the 34,197 teachers scored 70 – 100% while 16,724 (49%) failed according to him. In addition, to arrive at the number El-Rufa’i was quoted saying they failed his test, there are 5,056 teachers who scored 70 – 74% and are also categorized as failed by him. In every sane system, we expect that whenever a test of this nature was conducted, there will be those who will pass overwhelmingly, those who will be within average and those who will fail completely. In this case, what I expected the Governor to do, while still going by his cut-off mark (75%), is to take these categories and acted thus: 1. The 12,417 teachers who scored at least 75% should be retained. 2. The 18,685 teachers who scored 50 – 74% should be subjected to extensive training and re-tested after which if they failed to improve, should be redeployed to other available places to work. 3. The 3,095 teachers who scored 0 – 49% should be redeployed or sacked as the Governor deem fit. WRONGLY TOTALLED SCORES After obtaining the scoresheet of Kaduna State’s controversial Competency Test, I decided to verify marks obtained by each participant starting with that of Arabic/IRK Teachers in Zaria Local Government. There are five questions whose marks are distributed thus; Question 1 carries 40 marks while Questions 2, 3, 4 and 5 carries 15 marks each. These, if totaled, will give you 100 marks. While verifying the scoresheet, on the very first record, I discovered that the Total did not speak to the individual marks obtained for each question. That is, the person scored 38/40, 09/15, 13/15, 12/15 and 14/15 in questions 1, 2,3, 4 and 5 respectively. Applying simple arithmetic of 38+9+13+12+14 will give you total of 86% marks obtained not 72% as recorded for same person. Following this, I decided to focus on those with low marks and to my surprise, 99.9% of their marks were wrongly computed. I then stopped at the fifth page after discovering that 45 (See table 3) out of the 161 records had this same problem and almost all of them turned out score at least 75% but were wrongly recorded to have scored less than 75% which puts them at ‘Failed” category. With this, I will like to call on NUT officials of all the 23 LGAs to sit down and follow their scoresheet diligently and painstakingly verify the summation. This will drastically bring down the failure rate. To Governor El-Rufai, I will like to draw your attention to this and recommend that you punish the consulting company you hired to conduct this test for making you portray our dear state bad in the eyes of the world using wrong statistics. In addition, it will be nice if you ask another firm to verify simple summation of the marks obtained in order to get correct proportions. Finally, I wish to categorically state that you owe good people of Kaduna State undiluted apology for painting us black where we are not. Pictures of the first 5-pages of Zaria LGA Arabic/IRK Teachers scoresheet are attached for public consumption. All the 45 records I verified are indicated therein. Anybody who wishes to, can do the totals to further confirm my claim.Kaduna State still remains “Center of Learning”! https://www.thecable.ng/kaduna-teachers-competency-test-untold-story?_e_pi_=7%2CPAGE_ID10% TRASH! |

DYSMENORRHEA: UNMASKING THE ABNORMALITY BEHIND THE BEAUTY OF A WOMAN by Henry Osinimu Tawose(Nov. 2017) She dragged herself left to take a gaze at the clock atop the shelf, opening her eyes slowly like a child stealing on time. It's 2 'O' Clock in the morning. The longest hand has finally slouched to hit the hour. The time now has refused to travel fast. It was the slowest experience of time she has ever had. It was just fifteen minutes ago when she last stole that faint gaze, before she succumbed gently to sleep. Now she's awake not by chance but by the pinching pain of her abdomen - a raw and rough pain mowing her tummy with no small spikes. She has been stooling and vomiting all night, writhing in excruciating pains which threatens not to abate at least for the night. Iya Dudu grudgingly placed her hand which has been beaten by life itself to wrinkles to support her cheek in pittance of what her granddaughter has been experiencing all night. ‘When will this stop?’ she asked, looking up as if the answer to her question belongs there. She muttered some incoherent words which were only clear to herself before she made an instant walk towards the black bottle beside the small bed. She picked it up, shook it and immediately made a hand to rummage through her waist purse where she found her spoon lying shiningly clean inside a transparent cellophane nylon. She fetched a spoon full of the liquid, tasted it with the tip of her tongue before giving it to her again but this time, Labake is stone-calm, irresponsive. ‘Has the pains subsided?’ She asked doubtingly, shaking her hand for a response but she was still. Iya Dudu rubbed uncertainty off her face, shook her head resolutely in what will never be, before grooping her way towards the door despite the flicking candle light providing illumination for the small room. She ran straight to small Doctor's room to call for help, the third time the night. Before she could get her to check Labake again, she wasn't seen on her bed, she was seen beside Baba's toilet sitting and leaning on the door, as if the door would relieve her of her pains. Aunty Gunji had told me that fainting and passing out for some minutes is not new to Labake during her monthly ritual. She said she is not normal and that she belongs to Egbé. I grew up knowing Labake enduring this pain every month and each month, she is abandoned and stigmatized for being an Elegbé. At times she vomits, in another time, faints, most times she stools and doesn't eat until she's relieved. She had missed countless exams owing to this. Baami had paid for her last WAEC only to be absent during the day slated for mathematics, a subject she needed so much and prepared industriously. That night, I worried for her, thinking without an answer on how one would inflict those terrible pains on oneself just to be a ranking member of witchcraft. The following day wasn't the same, I approached her after she was said to be well and asked what has been wrong with her, looking at my eyes, to measure for prejudice, she simply said ‘menstrual pain’. Since then, though I do not know what exactly she meant as I was never bright upon growing up, but I became knowledgeable about it years later when I dated Oluwafeyisademi , my first Girl-friend. Feyi was just like Aunty Labake. At times, I regret ever having to befriend such a lady, who masks her harrowing abnormalty with ravishing and seraphic beauty. The first time I met Feyi, for a moment, my heart stopped, dumbfolded by her physical delicateness and curves which were all molded with perfection. Her whitish teeth were not made for any other task than to peek out of her luscious lips whenever she smiles. She had strode pass my Uncle’s shop donning a fitting maroon satin which left no curvy parts of her body unpronounced. Who could have predicted my affection for such an enchanting beauty would fade into a breakup? Our relationship tailed when our love for each other peaked. It was at the turn of her twenty-fourth birthday when I could no longer continue with the heart-breaks her monthly pain causes me – a condition that torments not only the victim but all who care to share a burden of affection for the young lady. She was the most beautiful and nicest person I have ever met. Each time I remember her, I remember grace on two legs, a beauty perfectly woven beyond non-human. An imagination and expression of an artist on a sheet of paper. A fiction. A woman God molded the day he ‘rested.’ And to think she fell in love with me broke my heart when I left her. She could only dream that I left because I couldn't bear to watch her suffer pain, I left in grave silence. In the world over, women, old and young have continued to suffer painful menstruation. While menstruation and it's attendant mild discomfitures is not abnormal, dysmenorrhea or painful menstruation and what it stands for, is antithetical to normalcy. Its an abnormality that has ravaged the women world to a state of resignment. Some of the women battling this condition have been confined to the belief that their condition defies all known medical solutions or a condition they have to keep enduring. It lays the mind bare to think if the female folks are especially made to bear pains their entire life given the kind of pains they inadvertently and knowingly undergo. Childbirth has been measured to be the second most painful moment a human can ever experience – the first is being burn alive. A human body is said to be enabled to bear only 45 del unit of pain but a mother, at the point of child-birth can manage 57 del unit of pain which is similar to 20 bones getting fractured at a time and still be strong enough to examine the newborn . This is aside the psychological trauma left to be managed to a permanent healing after childbirth or the emotional trauma which leaves a painful and enduring scar at the loss of a child. Its not suprising, that a woman fated with a painful life can endure all these pains and still end up being burnt alive ( apologies to readers’ emotional sense). Its on this ground that medical solutions be improved upon to reducing this painful condition on the woman without having to worry about under-laying side effects lying patiently for the time to strike. pain-killers are known to kill the pain and also kill the brain cells in the long run! It does a huge damage to the body too, at the passage of time. Therefore, what manner of damage would be wrecked on the body and brain cells that have consistently taken commands from pain-killers for ten years without fail? Dysmenorrhea, though improves following the birth of a child, its germane to know that countless women have been ignorantly driven into unhealthy marriages so as to be relieved of monthly pains only to be encountered by a more prevailing pain which unhealthy marriage births. This disorder keeps dwindling the academic performances of young women yearly as some are being pushed out of school holding on to the myth that having sex will rememdy the abnormality. Edema, stomach ache, fatigue, diarrhea, headache, nausea, mood changes and stress are just few of the varying symptoms of dysmenorrhea. Shockingly, our society doesn't accommodate the complaints of women under the sufferance of this pain, tapping the mouth of the woman to either endure the pains in silence or speak up and end up being disdained and yet not getting the due attention. Most times, this condition is being glossed over as normal, and women whose threshold for pain is flexible are made to dance a dance of shame after a seeming respite. Parents, who are supposed to be understanding, make their wards go through some rigorous tasks even when the burden of the disorder is too heavy for them to bear and parents who are deemed ‘considerate’ leave their children to face the pain under the web of parental silence which gives no other meaning than neglect. They are either criticized as not forbearing or lazy. Some even make a narration of how victorious they emerged after being submerged by the disorder in the past. Surreptitiously, painfully and pitifully, the vicious circle continues! The vicious circle of neglect and uncaring attitude, Creeping from one generation to another non-stop, leaving the woman to breast it all alone and yet no hope insight except the one pain-killer offers. It is worst off that the male folks are non-challant about this, ignoring the woman and in adverse cases, seeing the woman as one who has just returned from where the doctor has just forked her uterus where an unwanted foetus laid. Its abnormal that our society is unknowingly masking itself in denial and meting an unfair treatment to itself by not treating this abnormality humanely. In an ironic wave of thought, it's laughable that condoms are distributed freely while sanitary pads are exorbitantly sold! These women are supposed to be cared for as its known that love and care are salubrious, hence, viable propellers and good stimulants for healing than drugs - healing starts from the mind. These, are aside the preferential treatments that should be handed down the line whenever the need arises. Endometriosis. Childbirth. Dysmenorrhea are medical conditions most women are likely to encounter in their life time. While women experiencing dysmenorrhea might not be having endometriosis, women experiencing endometriosis apparently must experience painful menstruation until a medical attention is saught to either perform a surgical procedure or managed by other means. Therefore, primary dysmenorrhea, that is, painful menstruation not caused by endometriosis or other factors should be beaten to a mild and affordable solution by medical studies. This is 21st century, a condition like this shouldn't have defied all centuries to continue to Mar academic performances or even affect productivity at work. Non Governmental Organizations should sensitize parents and employers on this while awaiting a permanent medical improvement. Instead of hankering for Gender Equality that might not be realizable now, this could be incorporated into Gender Mainstreaming which might achieve the much desired Equality in the long run. Meanwhile, on my desk, I had just flipped open the 150th page of Chinanza's manuscript before a roaming wind fell the trophy atop the cabinet to distract me in a windy Saturday evening full of intense ruminations and thorough editing. The whole afternoon had been exhausted for other tasks except for lunch and idle thoughts. Its 7pm! The longest hand of the clock has just announced itself to my hearing. The day is no longer bright, it's cloudy, Home is calling, I worked late again. Am jaded and hungry, I must rise the rise of man from my work table, staggering to my abode, and on my way, visit Chinanza whose monthly ritual has made her lie on hospital bed for two days now before it rains. |
Good evening N'LANDERS, Please, kindly avail me of a good advice on what to do and how to go about it. Truth is, I mistakenly faxed my first degree certificate along with my MSc to WES . Now, WES is holding me hostage, telling me my evaluation has been pended until I take action by sending my transcript of my first degree to them. Needless to say, my MSc transcript has already been confirmed received by them. Though, I have sent messages to them confirming that my first degree was sent to them in error and that, they should only proceed with my MSc but profile hasn't changed still . I have sent them messages three times , the second message was attended to and a status change reflected on my profile before it changed again before 24hrs. and again, after some days, a mail dropped, telling me to state if my first degree be removed but I ignored thinking since my status has changed, it will be inappropriate to send in another message so as not to hamper the progress made and also not to stoke confusion since WES stated on the dashboard that one is not expected to take any action while evaluation is in progress. Last week , I received a message that they are awaiting verification from UNILAG for my MSc but it changed again after some time insisting I send in my first degree transcript. I have thought of calling them but I don't just want to complicate the issue beyond what it is... Please I need your advise. Thanks |

To shock and choke you of your wits, am not practising and I don't intend to. My aim was to amputate your tendency to misleading people and to save you from your deep ignorance. Carry your jàgàjágá post commot here |
TheMainMan: I read the comments trailing this post and I discovered, you are in all places defending your territory. If your building is built on a solid foundation, no need to defend it this fiercely. I mentioned that in the US and UK , newspapers are very much in vogue. Why not do a little research? Washington post, New York times, the enquirer are newspapers doing fantastically well. Have I mentioned Herald? I studied mass communication to a post graduate level, am offering you an explanation from a well informed angle and you have stuck to your sentimental lens choosing to see things myopically, holding tenaciously to the infantile view of your daddy who now prefers his phone to hard copies. I make bold to say that the economic situation of Nigeria has dwindled the sale of newspapers. People no longer want to buy not because they don't but because their monthly stipend no longer afford them that luxury. The archival advantage of hard copy dwarfs any archival one hold by the internet. The Internet is commonly used by young people who in time memorial never buy newspaper. The advent of the internet only gave this a claim. Interestingly, fewer young people read news/long text on the internet. They do all other things including gaming. That's why news platforms are already planning to include gaming in their contents so as to attract young people followership. These are all based on research. Go online, do fact finding before giving people trash to devour. |
TheMainMan:I want to believe you didn't do your research very well before putting up this stuff about journalism. I was going to quickly take you through McLuhan's assertions but it will only compound your confusion and your shallow knowledge on the subject matter. Now, here are some few reasons I have for you. 1. Before the advent of newspaper, information were written and posted for public consumption and when newspaper came, it has remained unsuppressible. Radio came, and people fell in love with the new technology postulating that the invention would announce the end of newspaper , instead, it only emboldened it. Newspaper didn't die. Television came, and what was said of newspaper was said of radio, but radio and newspaper still remain very relevant. Now, the advent of the internet, television has refused to phase out likewise radio and newspaper. Truth is, the advent of internet has increased unprofessionalism and have lowered the ethics of the profession. Today, almost everybody is a publisher online(citizen journalism) which has given rise to plethora of litigations in the law courts owing to publication of falsehood. In the US, Trump is still having his election probed after an allegation of Russia interference. So, you are very wrong. Be informed that in the US, and UK, newspaper business have continued to thrive enormously, they subscribe and almost all communities have their local newspaper. know this that in Nigeria, it's compulsory for government organizations to publish their adverts on newspaper. The paper-surface lovers will never trade their eyes for the eye-disturbing graphics of the phones or computers. They simply subscribe. Therefore it can't phase out, instead, the arrival of a new technology will only enhance the work of these organizations. Virtually all newspapers have an online platforms these days where they dole out information to online subscribers and it's the reporters doing the job. What you can say is, journalists must be digital, too. Paper and pen is very relevant . 2. The press is the fourth estate of the realm, watching the other three Estates and retaining the confidence of the electorate. Government is not trusted but the press is trusted. Therefore, journalism will continue to be pivotal towards the stability of the society. Donald Trump has continued to rely on his Twitter account and hasn't had a day off of trouble. His greatest undoing will be his social media account. He has been calling the media 'fake' and he has been finding things difficult. He doesn't want to accept the fact that he needs the media so he will fail as the media will not stop reporting him bizarrely. Journalists and their media houses endorse any presidential candidate of the US, a tradition which has overrided time. If journalism must phase out, then it will come from the west. Recently, when hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico and The Dominican, there wasn't internet service but it was reported. Who reported it? It was flesh and blood! |
